Summary

Every EDI 856 was rejected once it reached ingest_events. Shipping validation requires reference_document, tlc_source_reference and ship_date, but neither EDI route set them all:

Missing KDE Legacy POST /api/v1/ingest/edi POST /api/v1/ingest/edi/document
reference_document BOL stored only as reference_document_number same
tlc_source_reference no form field at all form field copied only for 944/945
ship_date / receive_date set set only inside the 944/945 branch, so 856/850/810/861 had none

The CSV/EDI import 500 (fixed separately in #3774) was hiding this.

Change

  • Both routes set reference_document from the extracted BOL. reference_document_number is kept.
  • The legacy route accepts tlc_source_reference. /document copies it to every transaction set.
  • /document sets ship_date or receive_date by CTE type for every set.
  • An 856 sent without tlc_source_reference is still rejected, now for that one field only, because X12 has nowhere to carry it.
  • 861 events set immediate_previous_source from the ship-from party, name first and GLN second, as 944 does. An N1*SF that names a party wins over SU or SH in either order, and SU or SH fills the field when no usable SF exists. An 861 with no ship-from party stays rejected for that KDE.

Verification

Runtime. Production image built from this branch, with #3774's import fix applied (otherwise the route 500s). Run against Postgres 17 and Redis 7.

  • Before the fix, with asn_856.edi, both routes returned 201 with 0 accepted and 1 rejected: "Missing required KDE reference_document / tlc_source_reference". /document also reported ship_date missing.
  • After the fix, with tlc_source_reference sent, both routes accept 1 of 1. fsma.cte_kdes holds reference_document=BOL-9001, ship_date=2026-03-10 and tlc_source_reference. The FDA CSV export shows Reference Document Number: BOL-9001 and Ship Date: 2026-03-10.
  • After the fix, without tlc_source_reference, the event is rejected with only Missing required KDE 'tlc_source_reference'.
  • 861, on this branch merged with current main: a named ship-from and a GLN-only ship-from each accepted 1 of 1, with immediate_previous_source in fsma.cte_kdes. An 861 with no ship-from accepted 0 and rejected 1 for that KDE alone.

Tests

  • New test_edi_856_required_kdes.py posts the recorded ASN through both routes and runs the captured events through the real _validate_event_kdes.
  • test_r3_restored_fixtures_e2e::test_edi_856_fixture_end_to_end asserted the old behavior (ship_date as an open gap). It now expects only tlc_source_reference.
  • All test_edi_*.py, test_r3_restored_fixtures_e2e.py and test_qa4_remediation_units.py pass (Python 3.11, in the production image).

Not in this PR

  • An EDI response still says status: "accepted" with HTTP 201 when ingestion_result rejected every event.
  • 850 and 810 events still lack ship_from_location and ship_to_location, so they stay rejected. Whether they are CTEs at all is an open product decision.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes FSMA KDE mapping on partner-facing EDI ingest paths and 861 party/GLN parsing, directly affecting whether events are accepted or rejected in the traceability pipeline.

Overview
Fixes systematic rejection of EDI 856 (and related) shipping/receiving events because built KDEs did not match what ingest_events validates (reference_document, tlc_source_reference, and CTE-appropriate dates).

Both POST /api/v1/ingest/edi and /document now populate reference_document from the extracted BOL/reference (alongside reference_document_number). The legacy 856 route gains an optional tlc_source_reference form field; /document copies that value onto every transaction set, not only 944/945. ship_date / receive_date are set from the event date for all CTE types in _build_ingest_event_for_set, fixing missing ship dates on 856/850/810/861 via /document.

861 receiving advice extraction prefers N1*SF over supplier/shipper parties for ship-from, allows a later named SF to refine an identifier-only SF, and only treats qualifier-92 numeric IDs as GLNs via _valid_gln_or_none. Route mapping adds immediate_previous_source from ship-from name or GLN.

New tests in test_edi_856_required_kdes.py exercise both routes against the real KDE validator; the restored 856 e2e fixture now expects only tlc_source_reference as an open gap when that form value is omitted.

Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 308eabc. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.

Every EDI 856 was rejected in ingest_events. REQUIRED_KDES_BY_CTE[SHIPPING]
requires reference_document, tlc_source_reference and ship_date, but:

- both EDI routes stored the BOL only as reference_document_number;
- tlc_source_reference was only copied for 944/945, and the legacy
  /api/v1/ingest/edi route had no way to accept it;
- /document set ship_date/receive_date only inside the 944/945 branch, so
856/850/810/861 events had no CTE date KDE.

Now both routes set reference_document from the extracted BOL (keeping
reference_document_number), the legacy route accepts tlc_source_reference,
/document copies it to every set, and the date KDE is chosen by CTE type
for every set. An 856 without tlc_source_reference is still rejected, but
for that one field only: X12 has no place for it.

test_r3_restored_fixtures_e2e asserted the old behavior (ship_date as an
open gap on the 856 fixture); it now expects only tlc_source_reference.

Walkthrough

The EDI ingestion routes now accept and propagate an optional TLC source reference to event KDEs. Shared event construction adds reference KDEs for transaction sets, assigns receive_date to receiving CTEs and ship_date to other CTEs, and adds immediate_previous_source for 861 events. The 861 extractor gives an explicit ship-from party precedence over other source entities. Tests cover TLC source reference handling on both 856 routes, 861 source extraction, and the expected 856 gap keys.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 1d9d0

The change makes EDI 856 and 861 events satisfy shipping and receiving KDE validation, and 861 events now prefer the explicit ship-from party. Before merge, unqualified identifiers can still be stored as GLNs and used as the previous source, and a duplicate ship-from segment can hide a named source. Purchase-order and invoice dates are also recorded as ship dates for 850/810 events. These affect the accuracy of traceability records, so resolve or explicitly accept them before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 1d9d0

The change restores acceptance of EDI events without changing tenant or permission checks. No introduced security weakness was established. Rejection, interruption, and retry recovery remain incompletely verified for the newly accepted traffic.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The direct changed exposure is authenticated EDI submissions reaching tenant-owned traceability persistence. An existing optional graph-sync path can inherit accepted event KDEs when enabled; it is disabled by default, and its deployed setting was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Both routes retain edi.ingest permission enforcement and principal-derived tenant resolution. Envelope mismatches are rejected, and configured trading-partner allowlists are checked before interchange reservation. The allowlist remains permissive when unset.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Existing recovery constraints remain: ISA13 is reserved before downstream KDE validation, with no rejection-release transition in the inspected dedup helper. When optional graph sync is enabled, publication occurs before the outer database commit. These are pre-existing mechanisms, not established PR-introduced findings; the new tests do not exercise their recovery behavior.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the change: EDI ingestion events now carry the shipping KDEs that validation requires. The raw summary and PR objectives confirm the main change is populating reference_document, tlc_source_reference, ship_date/receive_date, and immediate_previous_source on EDI events. The title uses a conventional fix() prefix, is one sentence, and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history. It omits the 861 ship-from change, which is secondary.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template structure. It has a Summary with a clear problem statement and a table of missing KDEs, a Change section, and a Verification section with runtime and test evidence. It lists what is out of scope. The Type of Change checkboxes and the Checklist are not filled in, and the Related Issues section is missing. The description does not state whether the PR is a bug fix, and it does not link the issue it fixes. The Test Plan checkboxes are not ticked, but the Verification section describes the tests run. The template items for the sys.modules stub rule and the documentation update are not addressed. These are gaps, but the description is mostly complete.

Resolution

Tick the Bug fix and Unit tests added/updated boxes. Complete the Checklist items, including a note on documentation updates. Add a Related Issues entry. The description references #3774 and the review thread, so link them under Related Issues.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 36.36% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 11 functions across 4 files.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Preserve the submitted TLC source reference.

Both routes strip leading and trailing characters from tlc_source_reference before storing the KDE. If those characters are part of a source identifier, the stored value can no longer match the submitted reference. Use .strip() to detect blank input, but retain the original nonblank value. Update the new test that expects the trimmed value. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Do not write purchase-order or invoice dates to ship_date.

The date map supplies po_date_raw for 850 and invoice_date_raw for 810. This branch writes those values to ship_date. An 850 or 810 without a shipment date can therefore produce a shipping CTE with a false shipping KDE, so validation cannot report the missing shipment date. Keep ship_date only for transaction sets with an extracted shipment date. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Select the BOL before assigning reference_document.

reference_document copies reference_document_number, but _extract_856_fields keeps the first qualifying REF value. If REF*PO appears before REF*BM, the later BOL is discarded. Both changed mappings can then link the TLC to a PO or another reference instead of the BOL. Preserve the BM value separately or prioritize it during extraction. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

REVIEW: PASS pi 1532235

Checked: 856 events from both /api/v1/ingest/edi and /document now carry reference_document (from the BSN/BOL reference) and an optional caller-supplied tlc_source_reference. Both are the exact KDE names that REQUIRED_KDES_BY_CTE[SHIPPING] requires. Every set now gets its date KDE (receive_date for RECEIVING, otherwise ship_date). That date comes from _ship_timestamp_and_date, which raises 400 on a missing date and never falls back to the ingest time, so no synthetic dates are added. The 944/945 behaviour is unchanged (the same keys moved into the common dict).

Local (box): EDI + r3 fixture suites 269 passed, 3 skipped (main baseline 265; the 4 new tests are included). CI: all relevant checks green; only Engine Review Pass and PR Blocker Checklist are red, both process checks.

Non-blocking: 850/810 are already classed as SHIPPING on main, so they now also get ship_date set to the PO/invoice date. That predates this PR, but it is worth a follow-up so that date is not presented as a ship date. Without a caller value, tlc_source_reference correctly stays a KDE gap. Merges cleanly with #3782.

Receiving validation requires immediate_previous_source (21 CFR
1.1345(a)(4)), but 861 events never set it, so every one was rejected.
Use the N1*SF party, name first and GLN second, the same mapping 944
uses. A document with no ship-from party stays rejected for that KDE.

The 861 extractor kept the first of SF, SU or SH, so a supplier listed
before the ship-from became immediate_previous_source. An N1*SF that

Follow-up fixes are pushed at 308eabc: invalid 861 location IDs cannot become GLNs, and a named SF wins over an identifier-only SF. The full ingestion suite passes, plus all 19 required-KDE tests; ruff check and format pass. Combined production-image verification with #3810, #3813 and #3817 passed against Postgres 17 and Redis 7, including cross-tenant identical-envelope ingestion, 409 replay detection, rejected/corrected resend, durable tenant-scoped gap open/close, and FDA CSV export.

Codex implemented this follow-up, so I am leaving the independent-engine review gate for another engine to evaluate rather than posting a self-review PASS marker. Both reported findings are fixed and their threads resolved. CI is running on the new head. #3817 should follow this PR.
