fix(ingestion): unbreak CSV/EDI ingest and let EDI 856 shipments pass KDE validation - #3778
CSV/XLSX and EDI uploads returned HTTP 500 in the production image, and once that was fixed, three latent bugs on the same path surfaced.
500 on every CSV/XLSX/EDI upload and every logged EDI rejection.webhook_compat.py imported app.tenant_validation and edi_ingestion/routes.py loaded app.edi_ingestion.rejection_log. In server.main the top-level app package is services/graph/app, so both failed. Tests stub app.tenant_validation into sys.modules, which hid it. Both now resolve relative to the ingestion package.
Two fsma.hash_chain rows per CSV/EDI event, one flagged as an orphan by chain verification. The compat path now matches webhook_router_v2: one shared ledger row, canonical row reuses the legacy event id with skip_chain_write=True. Normalization stays best-effort, so enforcement-off behavior is unchanged.
ISA13 burned for 7 days on any failure after reservation (content rejection, server error, or all events rejected), so the partner's resend got 409 "already processed". The claim is now released when nothing was stored.
No EDI 856 could be stored./ingest/edi sent reference_document_number but validation requires reference_document; /ingest/edi/document omitted ship_date and reference_document for 856; tlc_source_reference (not carried by an 856) could not be supplied. Both routes now accept a tlc_source_reference form field (as /document already did for 944/945). Nothing is synthesized: without it the event is still rejected with a clear missing-KDE error.
Test plan
Full ingestion suite in the production image: 6151 passed, 0 failed, 59 skipped, 6 xfailed
ruff 0.15.5 check + format clean on changed files
Live against the production image (Postgres 17, Redis 7, production ENABLED_ROUTERS):
CSV upload → 200, one chain row per event
EDI 856 zero quantity → 422 on both routes, ISA13 not retained
EDI 856 without tlc_source_reference → rejected, ISA13 released; corrected resend with same ISA13 → accepted; replay → 409
Chain length grew by exactly one row per accepted event
Test changes: compat stubs now return UUID event ids (as real store_event does); test_r3_restored_fixtures_e2e asserted ship_date was a gap although the fixture's BSN carries 2026-03-10.
Not in this PR
ISA13 keys already burned in production during the 500 window stay until TTL unless edi:interchange:* keys for that window are deleted.
Same absolute-import class, off the CSV/EDI path: audit_export_log.py:229, labels/gs1_128.py:14, stripe_billing/rate_limiting.py:125.
Medium Risk
Changes touch core ingest persistence (hash chain, canonical ids), EDI dedup semantics, and required shipping KDEs—high impact on partner retries and traceability data, but behavior is covered by expanded tests and aligns with the existing v2 webhook path.
Overview
Fixes production 500s on CSV/XLSX/EDI uploads by switching broken top-level app.* imports in webhook_compat and EDI routes to package-relative modules (the consolidated server’s app is the graph service, not ingestion).
Webhook compat now matches webhook_router_v2: normalize once, pass the canonical projection into legacy store_event, then persist the canonical row with the same event id and skip_chain_write=True so each accepted event adds onefsma.hash_chain row instead of two.
EDI dedup adds release_interchange to delete the Redis ISA13 reservation when nothing was stored—content rejection after reserve, ingest errors, or accepted=0—so partners are not blocked by 409 duplicate for the full TTL. Both /ingest/edi and /document wrap post-reserve work in try/finally and call release on failure.
856 shipping can pass KDE validation: optional tlc_source_reference on the legacy route; KDEs now include reference_document, ship_date, and tlc_source_reference (856 included on /document, not only 944/945). Form docs state shipping CTEs are rejected without TLC source reference when it is missing.
Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 9358fdd. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
CSV/XLSX and EDI uploads returned HTTP 500 in the production image:
webhook_compat imported ``app.tenant_validation`` and the EDI rejection
log was loaded as ``app.edi_ingestion.rejection_log``. In server.main the
top-level ``app`` package is services/graph/app, so both lookups failed.
Tests stub ``app.tenant_validation`` into sys.modules, which hid it.
Both now resolve relative to the ingestion package.
With the import fixed, two latent bugs on the same path surfaced:
- Each CSV/EDI event appended two fsma.hash_chain rows (legacy write plus
canonical write), and chain verification flagged the second as an
orphan. The compat path now matches webhook_router_v2: the legacy write
hashes the canonical projection and the canonical row reuses the legacy
event id with skip_chain_write=True. Normalization stays best-effort,
so enforcement-off behavior is unchanged.
- The ISA13 dedup claim was taken before content validation and ingest
and never released, so any later rejection or server error turned the
partner's resend into a 409 "already processed" for 7 days. The claim
is now released when the request fails after reservation.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
No 856 could be stored through either EDI route: every shipping event
was rejected by KDE validation.
- /ingest/edi sent the BOL as ``reference_document_number`` only; the
validator requires ``reference_document``. Both names are now sent.
- /ingest/edi/document built 856 events without ``ship_date`` or
``reference_document`` even though both are in the document.
- ``tlc_source_reference`` is not carried by an 856 and could not be
supplied. /ingest/edi gains an optional form field, and /document
copies its existing field onto 856 events as it already did for
944/945. Nothing is synthesized: without the field the event is still
rejected with a clear missing-KDE error.
An interchange whose events are all rejected stored nothing, so its
ISA13 claim is now released and the corrected resend is accepted
instead of returning 409.
test_r3_restored_fixtures_e2e asserted ship_date was a gap for the 856
fixture although its BSN carries 2026-03-10; it now asserts the date is
mapped and only tlc_source_reference remains a gap.

Walkthrough
EDI routes add TLC source reference and shipping KDE handling, update unified-route validation and response behavior, and release interchange reservations after specified failures or when no events are accepted. Webhook compatibility processing uses a canonical event projection for legacy persistence, reuses the legacy event ID for canonical persistence, and skips a second chain write. Tests cover reservation retries, EDI event fields, and webhook event identity.
Webhook ingestion can report one event ID while rules are evaluated against another, and a failed normalization can leave an accepted event with no canonical record. Advisory-mode EDI rejections also block a corrected resend until the reservation expires. Fix these or explicitly accept them before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 9358f
The ingestion fixes preserve tenant checks and improve failed-upload retries. However, the new shared-record layout exposes a verification gap: someone with separate database mutation privileges could alter canonical event content and its digest without the canonical verifier detecting disagreement with the original ledger. Ordinary upload access alone does not establish this capability.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: New compatibility-ingested shared-ID records enter an existing verifier branch that omits ledger-to-canonical digest equality. A privileged mutation of canonical covered fields together with sha256_hash can satisfy canonical content recomputation while leaving the original ledger unchanged. The exemption predates the PR, but the changed writer newly places these records behind it; upload access alone is insufficient to exploit this condition.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed exposure concerns canonical event integrity for records newly written through compatibility ingestion. Exploitation requires separate authority to mutate stored canonical content and its digest; its maximum tenant scope depends on that actor's database privileges, which were not established. The upload path's tenant-equality checks do not themselves grant this mutation authority.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The retained finding is supported by a coordinated-mutation path: alter canonical covered fields and recompute sha256_hash, but leave the ledger untouched. A dual-store match skips ledger-to-canonical equality, while content recomputation checks only the altered canonical digest. Chain linkage and mutations that do not also update the digest remain checked. The legacy verifier checks linkage and row existence rather than repairing this canonical-content binding.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The compatibility helper requires principal-derived tenant context, rejects payload tenant mismatches and verifies ingestion authority. EDI envelope mismatch and trading-partner checks run before reservation acquisition. The new source-reference field is event content, not tenant authority.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The unified route's advisory FSMA rejection returns without ingestion or reservation release, so a corrected resend can remain blocked until expiry. This reservation-retention behavior predates the PR; the new cleanup handles other rejection and exception paths but does not resolve this terminal state.
observed — Reservation acquisition uses atomic SET NX with a seven-day expiry, but errors allow processing to continue. Release deletes the tuple key without an acquisition token. This does not establish a practical attack, but ownership is not preserved if cleanup follows failed acquisition or expiry and recreation by another request.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Distinguish historical legacy-digest topology from shared canonical-digest topology, and enforce ledger-to-canonical digest equality for the latter during verification rather than exempting every dual-store match.
proposed — Represent reservation acquisition and ownership explicitly, release with an atomic owner check, and make every no-ingestion terminal state—including advisory rejection—follow the same cleanup policy while preserving claims for committed events.

Do not copy one tlc_source_reference onto lines that have different lot codes.
The caller sends one tlc_source_reference form value. The legacy 856 route copies it onto every SN1 line at Line 716. The unified route copies it onto every line of every 856/944/945 transaction set at Line 1231.
Each line can carry its own lot code (REF*LT), and that lot code becomes that event's TLC. The TLC source reference says where each lot code was assigned. Two lots can come from different packers.
If an ASN carries several distinct lots, every event receives the same source reference. Nothing tells the caller or a reviewer that the value may be wrong for some lots. This attaches a possibly wrong KDE to a CTE, which the path instructions forbid: "Flag any change that could ... silently default ... or corrupt Key Data Elements."
The scalar overrides (product_description, quantity_override, …) are already refused on multi-line input for the same reason. Apply the same rule to tlc_source_reference when the lines resolve to more than one distinct TLC. Another option is to accept a per-lot mapping.

Free the ISA13 before the advisory-mode rejection return.
This branch runs when strict=false or EDI_STRICT_MODE=false and at least one event fails FSMA validation. The function returns status="rejected" with ingestion_result=None, so nothing is written to the canonical stream. The return is normal, so the except BaseException handler at Line 1516 does not run. The ISA13 reservation also stays in place because the not ingestion_result.accepted release at Line 1495 is never reached.
As a result, the partner's corrected resend gets a 409 duplicate_interchange for the full 7-day TTL. This is the case the PR says it fixes: "releases an ISA13 deduplication claim when nothing is stored after reservation." The same reasoning also applies to the strict-mode 422 path at Line 1307, which already frees the key through the exception handler.
Call release_interchange before the return. Add an advisory-mode case to test_edi_date_reject_resend.py.

Do not commit a legacy-only hash after normalization fails.
ingest_events still calls CTEPersistence.store_event with canonical_event=None after normalization fails. In RULES_ENGINE_ENFORCE=off, the error is only logged, the savepoint commits, and the event is reported as accepted without a canonical record.
This initial legacy-only row also existed before the PR because the legacy write preceded normalization. However, this PR adds a retry failure: a later successful normalization reuses the legacy event ID and enables skip_chain_write=True. Because the legacy and canonical hash formats differ, the linked hash can fail comparison. OFF mode then swallows that ValueError, leaving the accepted event without a canonical record. An unchanged oversized payload continues to fail normalization on retry, so it does not by itself reach the later hash-comparison branch.
Reject and record the normalization failure before writing the legacy row, or provide an explicit reconciliation path for existing legacy hashes. Validation failures must be recorded as evidence, not swallowed.

Reconcile the two idempotency results.
The stores use different deduplication keys. For example, two uploads with different source values create separate legacy rows, but normalization uses webhook_api for both canonical keys. The canonical store can therefore return the first event ID for the second legacy row. The response reports the second ID, while rule evaluation uses the first; the second chain row has no matching canonical event or source-file linkage. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Make the two writes use compatible identity rules, and reject or reconcile a canonical result whose ID differs from store_result.event_id.
As per path instructions, “TLCs … must stay linked to their source and reference documents.”

Assert the complete gap set for the 856 fixture.
The fixture has exactly one missing shipping KDE: tlc_source_reference. Equality would detect any additional missing KDE. This is a test-strengthening refactor, not a weakening introduced by this change.

Update the 856 fixture assertions so gap_keys must equal the complete expected
set containing only tlc_source_reference, rather than checking that this key is
present and ship_date is absent.

* fix(edi): stop rejected EDI documents returning 500 in the prod image
_record_edi_rejection looked up the rejection log with an absolute
"app.edi_ingestion.rejection_log". In the consolidated server the
top-level app package is another service, so every EDI rejection raised
ModuleNotFoundError: the caller got a 500 instead of the 4xx with a
rejection_id, and the audit record was lost.
Resolve the module against this package. The lookup stays lazy, as the
tests rely on it.
Remove both PENDING_ELSEWHERE entries so the absolute-import guard has no
exceptions: #3793 landed the webhook_compat fix, and the branch named for
this one was closed in #3778.

* test(edi): clear partner settings in the prod-path rejection test
With EDI_REQUIRE_PARTNER_ID set in the environment, the request failed on
the missing partner header before reaching the date check.

Summary
CSV/XLSX and EDI uploads returned HTTP 500 in the production image, and once that was fixed, three latent bugs on the same path surfaced.
webhook_compat.pyimportedapp.tenant_validationandedi_ingestion/routes.pyloadedapp.edi_ingestion.rejection_log. Inserver.mainthe top-levelapppackage isservices/graph/app, so both failed. Tests stubapp.tenant_validationintosys.modules, which hid it. Both now resolve relative to the ingestion package.fsma.hash_chainrows per CSV/EDI event, one flagged as an orphan by chain verification. The compat path now matcheswebhook_router_v2: one shared ledger row, canonical row reuses the legacy event id withskip_chain_write=True. Normalization stays best-effort, so enforcement-off behavior is unchanged./ingest/edisentreference_document_numberbut validation requiresreference_document;/ingest/edi/documentomittedship_dateandreference_documentfor 856;tlc_source_reference(not carried by an 856) could not be supplied. Both routes now accept atlc_source_referenceform field (as/documentalready did for 944/945). Nothing is synthesized: without it the event is still rejected with a clear missing-KDE error.Test plan

Medium Risk
Changes touch core ingest persistence (hash chain, canonical ids), EDI dedup semantics, and required shipping KDEs—high impact on partner retries and traceability data, but behavior is covered by expanded tests and aligns with the existing v2 webhook path.
Overview
Fixes production 500s on CSV/XLSX/EDI uploads by switching broken top-level
app.*imports inwebhook_compatand EDI routes to package-relative modules (the consolidated server’sappis the graph service, not ingestion).Webhook compat now matches
webhook_router_v2: normalize once, pass the canonical projection into legacystore_event, then persist the canonical row with the same event id andskip_chain_write=Trueso each accepted event adds onefsma.hash_chainrow instead of two.EDI dedup adds
release_interchangeto delete the Redis ISA13 reservation when nothing was stored—content rejection after reserve, ingest errors, oraccepted=0—so partners are not blocked by 409 duplicate for the full TTL. Both/ingest/ediand/documentwrap post-reserve work intry/finallyand call release on failure.856 shipping can pass KDE validation: optional
tlc_source_referenceon the legacy route; KDEs now includereference_document,ship_date, andtlc_source_reference(856 included on/document, not only 944/945). Form docs state shipping CTEs are rejected without TLC source reference when it is missing.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 9358fdd. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo.
