fix(ingestion): give EDI events the shipping KDEs validation requires - #3775
Every EDI 856 was rejected once it reached ingest_events. Shipping validation requires reference_document, tlc_source_reference and ship_date, but neither EDI route set them all:
Missing KDE
Legacy POST /api/v1/ingest/edi
POST /api/v1/ingest/edi/document
reference_document
BOL stored only as reference_document_number
same
tlc_source_reference
no form field at all
form field copied only for 944/945
ship_date / receive_date
set
set only inside the 944/945 branch, so 856/850/810/861 had none
The CSV/EDI import 500 (fixed separately in #3774) was hiding this.
Change
Both routes set reference_document from the extracted BOL. reference_document_number is kept.
The legacy route accepts tlc_source_reference. /document copies it to every transaction set.
/document sets ship_date or receive_date by CTE type for every set.
An 856 sent without tlc_source_reference is still rejected, now for that one field only, because X12 has nowhere to carry it.
Verification
Runtime. Production image built from this branch, with #3774's import fix applied (otherwise the route 500s). Run against Postgres 17 and Redis 7.
Before the fix, with asn_856.edi, both routes returned 201 with 0 accepted and 1 rejected: "Missing required KDE reference_document / tlc_source_reference". /document also reported ship_date missing.
After the fix, with tlc_source_reference sent, both routes accept 1 of 1. fsma.cte_kdes holds reference_document=BOL-9001, ship_date=2026-03-10 and tlc_source_reference. The FDA CSV export shows Reference Document Number: BOL-9001 and Ship Date: 2026-03-10.
After the fix, without tlc_source_reference, the event is rejected with only Missing required KDE 'tlc_source_reference'.
Tests
New test_edi_856_required_kdes.py posts the recorded ASN through both routes and runs the captured events through the real _validate_event_kdes.
test_r3_restored_fixtures_e2e::test_edi_856_fixture_end_to_end asserted the old behavior (ship_date as an open gap). It now expects only tlc_source_reference.
All test_edi_*.py, test_r3_restored_fixtures_e2e.py and test_qa4_remediation_units.py pass (Python 3.11, in the production image).
Not in this PR
An EDI response still says status: "accepted" with HTTP 201 when ingestion_result rejected every event.
861 (receiving) events still lack immediate_previous_source.
Medium Risk
Changes FSMA KDE mapping on the partner EDI ingest path, which directly affects whether events enter the canonical traceability stream and how compliance gaps are reported.
Overview
EDI 856 (and other sets on /document) were building events that failed downstream shipping/receiving KDE validation, so ingest_events rejected them for missing reference_document, tlc_source_reference, and sometimes ship_date/receive_date.
Both routes now map the extracted BOL to reference_document (while keeping reference_document_number). The legacy POST /api/v1/ingest/edi route accepts optional tlc_source_reference and copies it onto each 856 line’s KDEs. POST /api/v1/ingest/edi/document strips and applies that form field to every transaction set, and _build_ingest_event_for_set sets ship_date or receive_date from CTE type for all sets—not only 944/945.
tlc_source_reference still has no X12 field on 856; callers must supply it or validation continues to fail on that KDE alone. New route tests post the ASN fixture through both endpoints and assert real _validate_event_kdes behavior; the restored 856 e2e now expects only tlc_source_reference as an open gap.

Every EDI 856 was rejected in ingest_events. REQUIRED_KDES_BY_CTE[SHIPPING]
requires reference_document, tlc_source_reference and ship_date, but:
- both EDI routes stored the BOL only as reference_document_number;
- tlc_source_reference was only copied for 944/945, and the legacy
/api/v1/ingest/edi route had no way to accept it;
- /document set ship_date/receive_date only inside the 944/945 branch, so
856/850/810/861 events had no CTE date KDE.
Now both routes set reference_document from the extracted BOL (keeping
reference_document_number), the legacy route accepts tlc_source_reference,
/document copies it to every set, and the date KDE is chosen by CTE type
for every set. An 856 without tlc_source_reference is still rejected, but
for that one field only: X12 has no place for it.
test_r3_restored_fixtures_e2e asserted the old behavior (ship_date as an
open gap on the 856 fixture); it now expects only tlc_source_reference.

Walkthrough
The EDI 856 endpoint now accepts an optional tlc_source_reference. Both EDI routes pass the trimmed value into event data, and generated events include reference_document. Date KDE assignment now applies across transaction sets: receiving CTEs use receive_date, and other CTEs use ship_date. New tests cover both routes with and without the source reference. The EDI 856 fixture test now expects only tlc_source_reference to remain missing.
This PR lets EDI 856 events pass shipping KDE validation, but the shipping date can be the ASN creation date rather than the actual shipment date. The reference document can also be stored without its type. Both can put misleading values into traceability records, so they should be fixed or consciously accepted before merge.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 3a517
Access and tenant controls remain intact. However, newly accepted shipment records can use an ASN creation date as the shipment date, allowing inaccurate traceability information to reach regulatory exports.
Retained concerns
Medium · architecture · inferred: The newly complete 856 events can satisfy the shipping-date requirement using BSN03, the ASN creation date, rather than an actual shipment date. The extractor does not consume shipment-qualified DTM dates. Although that extraction predates this PR, completing the reference KDEs and adding the document-route ship_date makes the latent mismatch consequential for newly accepted records. When creation and shipment dates differ, persistence and FDA export can carry an inaccurate shipment date without a completeness error.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified integrity exposure is bounded to EDI events submitted through an authenticated tenant's ingestion authority and their downstream traceability outputs. The changed metadata does not select the tenant or grant additional permissions; no cross-tenant or infrastructure-authority expansion was established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — An otherwise valid 856 with differing ASN-creation and shipment dates can now pass the completed KDE checks while retaining the creation date as ship_date. The resulting value can flow through persistence into regulatory output. This is a traceability-integrity concern, not an established authentication bypass; production execution was not reproduced.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Both EDI routes retain edi.ingest permission checks and principal-derived tenant resolution. The shared ingestion helper independently rejects missing or mismatched payload tenants before tenant-scoped persistence. Partner allowlist enforcement, when configured, remains before interchange reservation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Document-level FSMA validation failures remain outside canonical ingestion in strict and advisory modes. Once ingestion starts, however, persistence uses per-event savepoints: handled failures can produce mixed accepted and rejected results, while an escaping exception rolls back the enclosing database transaction. Redis reservation is separate from that transaction. These failure-containment boundaries are unchanged, so prevalidation must not be described as guaranteeing interchange-wide atomic persistence.

Support a source reference per lot.
An 856 can contain multiple lines with different TLCs and different TLC sources. This assignment copies one form value to every line, and the multi-line override guard does not reject it. The events can therefore pass validation with an incorrect source link. Accept references per line or reject requests that cannot represent the distinct references. The legacy route has the same constraint.
As per path instructions: “TLCs … must stay linked to their source and reference documents.”

Preserve the reference document type.
The 856 extractor accepts BM, SI, CN, PO, and PK qualifiers but retains only the number. The route then writes that number to reference_document, so a non-BOL value can be stored without its document type. Preserve the qualifier or resolved document type alongside the number. The FSMA validation contract only requires the reference_document key and permits additional KDEs.

Use DTM*011 when it is present for the 856 ship_date KDE.
The extractor currently ignores DTM*011 and uses BSN03 as ship_date. When those dates differ, the unified route can persist the ASN creation date as the shipment date. The checked-in fixture has no DTM segment, so it does not detect this case.
Parse the DTM segment with qualifier 011 and let its date and time override the BSN fallback. Add a fixture with different BSN03 and DTM011 values. If a trading-partner contract requires DTM011, reject or record a validation failure when it is absent; the cited guide itself marks DTM as optional.
