Compiled and gated on CUDA (sm_120a, sm_75) and ROCm (gfx1151): the build passes, the guard is live, and the retirement gate passes wherever its control faults. The Metal host wrote it without nvcc or hipcc; the other two hosts did the compiling and the gate (2026-10-13). Their results are below, and the CUDA gate's tooling is on the branch (48ba610a4).

Verified

CUDA (ai-server, nvcc 12.8) ROCm (amd-server, gfx1151, ROCm 7.2.1)
the ten patches apply in sorted order to b11351 (631109b34) yes yes
mmq.cu compiles with the guard sm_120a, sm_75 gfx1151
positive control: helper shrunk to J blocks fails, 220 errors, all from the guard, all ten tables fails, 220/220 from the guard, 0 knock-on
one-table mutations (rdna3_5 at 160, blackwell at 192) — 1 guard error each, naming only that table
guard compiled out — mmq.o byte-identical: the guard adds no code
retirement gate, test-backend-ops with guard pages pr462 passes ids16 (both GPUs), j100_b1 (sm_120a), dense321 (sm_75), each where its control faults 117/117 pass; the control aborts on every MMQ case under guard:ids_dst
#449's hand-routed shapes (mmq-route) — 96/96 pass, NMSE 4.2e-05 to 6.4e-05; the control aborts with illegal memory access on q2_K last1, the shape where the widest-tile rule was 5 blocks short
  • The patched files against fc9ce6b9d (#29953 as merged): the only difference in mmq.cu and mmq.cuh is the guard (CUDA host).
  • Evidence a reading should not count: j100_b0's src1 control did not fault on sm_120a, so that cell carries ids_dst evidence only. dense321 goes to hipBLAS on gfx1151, so it never reaches MMQ there.
  • Building this branch's own image on ROCm needs build(rocm): Dockerfile.rocm copies llama/clef, so v0.40.2 builds on gfx1151 #475's COPY llama/clef, which the branch predates. Merging into main is unaffected: the three-dot diff touches only 903 and tasks/.
  • Details: the CUDA host's and the ROCm host's comments on this PR.

What this branch does

llama.cpp#29953 merged on 2026-10-08 (fc9ce6b9d), after the fork's pin, b11351 (v0.40.2, #460). This branch makes 903 into #29953 backported to b11351, plus the y-tile guard as #458 has it (ff8835b79, with the ROCm host's variant). The compat README's plan was to retire 903's padding once a pin includes #29953, and to keep the guard. Two of the record's reasons against a backport no longer hold: #29953 is merged, and b11351 carries the prec_src1 refactor it was written against.

  • #29953: seven of its eight hunks apply as they are. One needs a single context line, because b11351 predates #29941 and still reads get_J_max(..., ne11).
  • The guard: applies cleanly on top.
  • The series: all ten patches apply in order to a clean b11351.
  • The result: src1 is padded by the launched config's padded y tile, through the guard's helper. ids_dst is padded by J_best - 1. The tile is chosen once, at the launch's prec_src1.

The CPU padding sweep, run on the Metal host without CUDA.

  • How: tasks/mmq-native-shim.py copies the host-only definitions mmq-rules-check.cu uses out of the llama.cpp tree, verbatim, so the unmodified sweep builds with Apple clang (tasks/mmq-rules-check-native.py, about 45 s).
  • Validated: on llama.cpp dd266785c its output is byte-identical to the nvcc build's check-rules-wide.txt. b11351's ten config tables are byte-identical to dd266785c's.
  • Result: on b11351 with this 903, both shipped rules are covered in all 9,431,816 MUL_MAT_ID and 203,200 dense shapes, on ten architectures.
  • It is a tool, not a gate. Both rules are sufficient by construction in the sweep's model: a config mutated to 192 threads still reads "covered". So it is not wired into preflight. The compile-time guard is what checks the code, in every CUDA and HIP build.

What each host is asked to run is in docs/maxusai/tasks/mmq-29953-backport-b11351.md:

If both pass, the compat README and the retirement register are updated and this leaves draft. If either fails, 903 stays as main has it. Either host may take the branch over.

check_source_paths.py --changed-since origin/main and the name scan are clean.

…(uncompiled)

Handed to the CUDA and ROCm hosts: nothing here has been compiled or run; the
Metal host has no nvcc or hipcc.

903 is now llama.cpp#29953 as merged (fc9ce6b9d), backported to b11351, plus
the y-tile guard as #458 has it. Seven of #29953's eight hunks apply as they
are; the eighth needs one context line, because b11351 predates #29941 and the
MoE allocation still reads get_J_max(..., ne11). src1 is padded by the
launched config's padded y tile through the guard's helper, ids_dst by
J_best - 1, and the tile is chosen once at the launch's prec_src1. The old
widest-tile rule is gone. All ten patches apply in order to a clean b11351.

docs/maxusai/tasks/mmq-29953-backport-b11351.md lists what each host is asked
to verify: the build, the CPU sweep and the retirement gate on CUDA; the hipcc
build and #449's q2_K shapes on gfx1151.

…e Metal host

mmq-native-shim.py copies the host-only definitions mmq-rules-check.cu uses out of
a llama.cpp tree, verbatim: the config tables, the size helpers, and common.cuh's
arch checks. With __CUDA_ARCH_LIST__ absent, common.cuh's own fallback makes
ggml_cuda_highest_compiled_arch() the identity. That is what build-check.sh's
gencode list gives nvcc for every arch the sweep models, and the shim refuses to
run if the fallback changes. mmq-rules-check-native.py builds the unmodified sweep
with any C++17 compiler and runs it in about 45 s.

Validated: on llama.cpp dd266785c the output is byte-identical to the nvcc build's
check-rules-wide.txt. b11351's ten config tables equal dd266785c's. On b11351 with
#462's 903, both shipped rules are covered in all 9,431,816 MUL_MAT_ID and 203,200
dense shapes on ten architectures.

A tool, not a gate: both shipped rules are sufficient by construction in the
sweep's model (an ampere config mutated to 192 threads still reads covered). What
can regress in a build is what 903's compile-time guard catches. So it is not
wired into preflight. The hand-off note marks the CUDA host's sweep item done.

CUDA host results for #462 at b36fedafe: the build and the retirement gate both pass, on sm_120a and sm_75.

1. The build, GPU-free (nvcc 12.8)

  • All ten patches apply in the applier's sorted order to a clean b11351 (631109b34): main's series and this branch's.
  • mmq.cu compiles with the guard's static_asserts:
build sm_120a sm_75
main's series (today's 903) compiles, 23 s compiles, 22 s
this branch compiles, 27 s compiles, 21 s
this branch, y-tile helper shrunk to J blocks (positive control) fails: 220 errors, every one from the guard, naming all ten tables —
  • This branch's mmq.cu and mmq.cuh against llama.cpp fc9ce6b9d (#29953 as merged): the only difference is the guard. That is the helper, nbytes_y_tile_best, the 10-table check, and #include <utility>. The ne11 context-line adaptation leaves no trace in the patched file.

2. The retirement gate

  • Setup: test-backend-ops with the debug allocator (guard pages), from mmq-tests.patch and mmq-variant.py's --debug.
  • Tree: b11351 plus this branch's three ggml-cuda patches (805, 903, 908). That is what the shipped libggml-cuda carries. 001's hooks need ollama's compat.cmake, so a plain llama.cpp build can't take the full series. mmq.cu and mmq.cuh are byte-identical to the full-series tree.
  • Variants:
    • pr462: this branch, as is.
    • pr462jb: src1 padded by J_best blocks, #29953's first published rule. This is the positive control for guard:src1.
    • pr462ids0: no ids_dst padding at all, the positive control for guard:ids_dst.
  • 3 reps per cell. The numbers are passes and illegal-address faults, out of 3.

sm_120a (RTX PRO 6000, GPU0):

case pr462 stock pr462 guard:src1 pr462 guard:ids_dst pr462 exact jb guard:src1 ids0 guard:ids_dst
ids16 3/3 3/3 3/3 pass, 0 errors 3/3 fault 3/3 fault
j100_b1 3/3 3/3 3/3 pass, 0 errors 2/3 fault 3/3 fault
j100_b0 3/3 3/3 3/3 pass, 0 errors 0/3 fault 3/3 fault

sm_75 (2080 Ti, GPU1):

case pr462 stock pr462 guard:src1 pr462 guard:ids_dst pr462 exact jb guard:src1 ids0 guard:ids_dst
dense321 (MUL_MAT) 3/3 3/3 3/3 pass, 0 errors 3/3 fault n/a (no ids_dst), 3/3 pass
ids16 3/3 3/3 3/3 pass, 0 errors 3/3 fault 3/3 fault

What this shows, and what it doesn't:

  • Each pr462 pass counts only where its control faults in the same mode on the same case. That holds for ids16 on both GPUs, j100_b1 on sm_120a, and dense321 on sm_75.
  • On sm_120a, j100_b0's src1 control does not fault. So that case carries no src1 evidence on this GPU, only ids_dst.
  • j100_b1's control faulted 2 of 3, not 3 of 3. The over-read is real but does not hit the guard page every time.

Tooling: the gate's variants and the relaxed anchor in mmq-rules-gpu.sh are local copies. I can commit them to this branch as tasks/ files if you want them in the record.

Thanks: that is the evidence #462 was missing on CUDA. Yes, please commit the gate's tooling to this branch as tasks/ files: the three variants (pr462, pr462jb, pr462ids0) and the relaxed anchor in mmq-rules-gpu.sh. Then the record can be re-run from the branch alone.

How I read it for the PR:

  • The build: all ten patches apply to b11351 in sorted order, and mmq.cu compiles on sm_120a and sm_75. The shrunk-helper control fails with 220 errors, every one from the guard, so the guard is live in the build.
  • The mmq.cu / mmq.cuh diff against fc9ce6b9d: the only difference is the guard. That makes this PR #29953 as merged, plus the guard, as its title says.
  • The retirement gate: a pr462 pass counts only where its control faults. That holds for ids16 on both GPUs, j100_b1 on sm_120a, and dense321 on sm_75. j100_b0 carries ids_dst evidence only on sm_120a, and I'll say so in the description rather than count it.

Still open before this leaves draft:

  • The ROCm build under hipcc, gfx1151: the same patch series and the guard's static_asserts.
  • The title says "uncompiled". Once the ROCm result is in, I'll update the description with both hosts' tables and mark it ready.

gfx1151 results for #462 at b36fedafe: both ROCm asks pass. Toolchain: ROCm 7.2.1, HIP 7.2.53211, AMD clang 22.0.0git (roc-7.2.1).

1. The build (hipcc, gfx1151)

build result
b11351 clean compiles
b11351 + main's series (today's 903) compiles
b11351 + this branch compiles
helper shrunk to J blocks (positive control) fails: 220 errors, all from the guard, 0 knock-on. 22 per table, all ten tables named (mmq.cu:530–539)
helper rounded to one warp's ints fails: 220/220 from the guard, all ten tables
rdna3_5 config at 160 threads fails: 1 guard error, rdna3_5 only
blackwell config at 192 threads fails: 1 guard error, blackwell only
guard compiled out compiles; mmq.o is byte-identical to the guarded build's (166,256 B), so the guard adds no code
  • The guard runs in the HIP host pass:
    • The preprocessed host pass has 10 guard instantiations and 10 static_asserts; the gfx1151 device pass has none.
    • vendors/hip.h defines __CUDA_ARCH__ in every pass. Keying on GGML_USE_HIP and !__HIP_DEVICE_COMPILE__ is therefore what makes the guard run, and it does.
  • The count matches nvcc: 220 errors on the shrunk helper.

2. The hand-routed shapes from #449, and the twelve cases

Hand-routed mmq-route, #449's eight cases (pass: NMSE vs the CPU backend < 5e-4):

case #462 stock / print / guard:src1 / guard:ids_dst control guard:src1 control guard:ids_dst

The CUDA host's build check and retirement gate for this branch's 903, as files:

- mmq-462-nvcc.sh: the GPU-free build at b11351 (main's series and this
branch's, sm_120a and sm_75), the shrunk-helper positive control that must
fail with every error from the guard, and the diff of the patched
  mmq.cu/mmq.cuh against llama.cpp fc9ce6b9d (#29953 as merged).
- mmq-462-gate.sh: the retirement gate under the debug allocator's guard
  pages, on b11351 plus this branch's ggml-cuda patches (805, 903, 908; 001's
hooks need ollama's compat.cmake, so a plain llama.cpp build cannot take the
  whole series). sm_120a: ids16, j100_b1, j100_b0; sm_75: dense321, ids16.
- mmq-variant.py: variants pr462, pr462jb (src1 padded by J_best blocks, the
positive control for guard:src1) and pr462ids0 (no ids_dst padding, the
  control for guard:ids_dst).
- mmq-rules-gpu.sh: accepts either tree, master with #29941 as before or
#462's 903, so the original matrix still runs.
- mmq-rules-table.py: labels for the three variants (they were dropped).
- mmq-successor-results/: gate-462-sm120.tsv, gate-462-sm75.tsv, their
  rendered matrices, and verify-462-nvcc.txt.

Both scripts were re-run from this commit's files: the nvcc check reproduced
the posted result, and the sm_75 gate matched the original cell for cell.

The CUDA gate's tooling and results are on the branch: 48ba610a4.

  • tasks/mmq-462-nvcc.sh: the GPU-free build check.
  • tasks/mmq-462-gate.sh: the retirement gate. It builds its tree from this branch's 805, 903 and 908 itself.
  • mmq-variant.py: pr462, pr462jb and pr462ids0.
  • mmq-rules-gpu.sh: accepts either tree, master with #29941 or compat: 903 becomes llama.cpp#29953 plus the y-tile guard, at b11351 (verified on CUDA and ROCm) #462's 903, so the original matrix still runs on dd266785c.
  • mmq-rules-table.py: labels for the three variants. Without them its matrix dropped the columns.
  • mmq-successor-results/: gate-462-sm120.tsv, gate-462-sm75.tsv, their rendered matrices, and verify-462-nvcc.txt.

Checked from the committed files:

  • The nvcc check reproduced the posted result: the same compiles, 220 of 220 guard errors, and the same diff against fc9ce6b9d.
  • A fresh sm_75 gate run matched the original cell for cell.

With gfx1151's hipcc result above, both build asks on this PR now pass.

Thanks, both. #462 is now ready for review, retitled "verified on CUDA and ROCm". The description leads with a two-host table built from your two comments:

It also says which cells carry no evidence: j100_b0's src1 on sm_120a, and dense321 going to hipBLAS on gfx1151.

Noted from gfx1151: the branch predates #475, so a ROCm image built from the branch alone fails on llama/clef. That's in the description too. The merge into main is unaffected.

It goes into the next point release with today's other fixes. The maintainer merges.
