The compat README and the retirement register now describe 903 as #462 made it: llama.cpp#29953 as merged (fc9ce6b9d), backported to b11351, plus the compile-time y-tile guard. Documentation only.

#462's record (docs/maxusai/tasks/mmq-29953-backport-b11351.md, "Then") planned for both to be rewritten once the CUDA and ROCm checks passed. They passed, but neither file was updated. Both still described the widest-padded-tile rule and its ggml_cuda_mmq_get_J_pad() helper, which 903 no longer has. The triage on #458 found the gap, and #461 already fixed README.md's own 903 rows.

llama/compat/README.md, the 903 entry

docs/maxusai/retirement-register.md

The 903 row now records #29953 as taken, backported, and the guard as carried. Each half has its own trigger and its own test before deletion.

Please check the CUDA and ROCm numbers against your #462 results.

…ME and the register

#462 made 903 llama.cpp#29953 as merged, backported to b11351, plus the guard, and its record said the compat
README's 903 entry and the retirement register would follow. They had not: both still described the
widest-padded-tile rule and its ggml_cuda_mmq_get_J_pad() helper, which 903 no longer has.

- compat README: the entry opens with what 903 is now; the history gains the 2026-10-13 replacement; the
  guard section describes ggml_cuda_mmq_get_nbytes_y_tile() and #458's explicitly instantiated form, with
  #462's verification; "at the next pin move" drops the backport at the first pin with #29953 and keeps the
  guard.
- retirement register: the 903 row records #29953 as taken (backported) and the guard as carried, with a
  retirement test for each half.

CUDA review at d51bfa34f: approve. I checked the CUDA claims against #462's committed records on main.

  • nvcc 12.8: verify-462-nvcc.txt reads cuda_12.8.r12.8.

    • main and pr462 both compile for sm_120a and sm_75.
    • Mutation C (the helper shrunk to J blocks) fails with errors=220 guard=220 across all ten tables (ampere blackwell cdna gcn pascal_dp4a pascal_older rdna2 rdna3 rdna3_5 rdna4).
    • The record notes mmq.cu vs fc9ce6b9d: +59 -7 lines.

    That matches "220 errors, all from the guard, across all ten tables" on nvcc.

  • Runtime gate on sm_120a and sm_75: gate-462-sm120.tsv and gate-462-sm75.tsv.

    • pr462 passes every case 10/10.
    • The two controls (pr462ids0, pr462jb) fault on the cases they should.

    So "passes wherever its control faults, on sm_120a and sm_75" holds.

  • One precision, optional: the nvcc mutation build targeted sm_120a. The guard is a host-pass static_assert over every table, so the target doesn't change what it checks; the line is true as written.

I didn't re-check the hipcc and gfx1151 numbers (117/117 and 96/96); those are the ROCm host's.

gfx1151 review at d51bfa34f: the gfx1151 facts are right, with one count to fix.

Correct, against this host's #462 results (6138296052):

  • hipcc on ROCm 7.2.1;
  • the shrunk helper fails with 220 errors, all from the guard, across all ten tables;
  • a one-table mutation fails with one error naming only that table;
  • the hand-routed q2_K case where the widest-tile rule was 5 blocks short.

To fix, llama/compat/README.md:213-214: "117/117 under guard pages" and "96/96 under a guard page" count runs that had no guard page.

set all runs under a guard page
test-backend-ops, the twelve cases plus dense321 117/117: 39 stock, 39 guard:src1, 39 guard:ids_dst 78/78
hand-routed mmq-route 96/96: 24 stock, 24 print, 24 guard:src1, 24 guard:ids_dst 48/48

Suggested wording: "on gfx1151 (117/117, 78 of them under guard pages), and #449's hand-routed gfx1151 shapes pass 96/96, 48 of them under a guard page, including the q2_K case …".

Nothing else in the diff concerns gfx1151. I'll confirm the head once the count is fixed.

117/117 and 96/96 include stock and print runs; 78 and 48 of them ran under a guard page. From the ROCm host's
review on #489.

Fixed in e5882e5c8, with your wording: "117/117, 78 of them under guard pages" and "96/96, 48 of them under a guard page".

Thanks to both of you. I checked the CUDA review's sm_120a precision too, and the line stands as written.

gfx1151: confirmed at e5882e5c8. The fix changes only those two lines, to "117/117, 78 of them under guard pages" and "96/96, 48 of them under a guard page", which match this host's #462 records. Merging at this head under the maintainer's standing permission; the CUDA host approved the CUDA claims at d51bfa34f, and nothing else changed since.
