Fold upstream v0.40.3 into main. It is three commits and Go only; no native input moves. The one that matters for the fork: the local GGUF compatibility migration is paused (upstream ollama#18908). So a v0.40.3 deploy no longer rewrites production's store.

What v0.40.3 brings

Why it matters here

  • Disk: on gfx1151 the v0.40.2-dynres.1 deploy is deferred over exactly this. 0.40.2 would convert each legacy GGUF on its first load, against about 90 GB free and an 830 GB store.
  • Converted children stay served. A host that already ran v0.40.2 keeps its converted children: v0.40.3 still resolves a tag's llamacpp child. Only new conversions stop.
  • fix(vision): a converted nemotron3 GGUF keeps its per-request image budget (#480) #483 is still needed: a registry pull in the llamacpp layout is nemotron_h_moe plus a projector without any conversion.
  • v0.40.4 is not in scope. It is at rc1, with 25 commits and llama.cpp b11521, so it is its own fold once released.

Gates

gate state
1, the merge done: fd14dc60b, no conflicts. go build ./... clean; go vet and go test pass for ./server, ./cmd/launch, ./llm, ./compatmigrate (gfx1151, Go 1.27)
2, docs and paths docs/maxusai/tasks/upstream-sync-0.40.3.md. check_source_paths.py --changed-since origin/main and check_no_names.py pass
3, the patch series unchanged
4, image gfx1151: maxusai-ollama:0.40.2-dynres.1-6-g9f3baaf-rocm7-gfx1151. Its 19 native libraries are byte-identical to the v0.40.2-dynres.1 release's
5, preflight gfx1151: queued, against rocm7-0-40-2, at the #477 campaign's next model boundary. I'll post it here
profiles rocm7-0-40-2 widens to 0\.40\.[23] (ADR 0032, a Go-only fold), and test_verdicts.py is updated. 0.40.4 stays refused

Asked of the other hosts

  • CUDA (cuda-0-40-2, mlx-cuda-0-40-2) and Metal (mlx-metal-0-40-2, metal-0-40-2):
    • a build of this head, which can be a Go-only swap onto your 0.40.2 payloads;
    • your preflight;
    • the same widening of your patterns, in this PR or your own, as you prefer.
  • The interim stamp is 0.40.2-dynres.1-N-g<sha>, so it already resolves to your 0.40.2 profiles. The widening matters only after v0.40.3-dynres is cut.

Upstream v0.40.3 (3 commits, Go only; llama.cpp stays b11351, MLX a59cc231):
- eab97e9 server: skip local model compatibility migration (ollama#18908) -- the first-load GGUF -> llamacpp-child
  conversion is paused (its call in scheduleRunnerForModel is commented out, its integration test skipped)
- 021cda5, c2b7368 launch: Claude Code and Codex warning suppressions

Clean merge; go build ./..., go vet and go test ./server ./cmd/launch ./llm ./compatmigrate pass.

docs/maxusai/tasks/upstream-sync-0.40.3.md: what the fold brings (the local GGUF compatibility migration is
paused, so a v0.40.3 deploy no longer rewrites production's store) and its gates. rocm7-0-40-2's pattern widens to
0.40.3, as ADR 0032 says for a Go-only fold; 0.40.4 (llama.cpp b11521) stays refused.

CUDA gates 4 and 5 at 9f3baafce: both preflights pass. The canary is production-like, as the #487 lesson requires: --gpus all (RTX PRO 6000 + 2080 Ti), production's environment, the 8TB production store.

gate CUDA host
4, image maxusai/ollama:pr488-9f3baaf, stamp 0.40.2-dynres.1-6-g9f3baaf, a Go-only swap onto sync-0.40.2.1-main. No native input changed since 39602449f, and all 2696 payload files are hash-identical to the release image.
5, cuda cuda-0-40-2: PASS=20 SKIP=9
5, mlx-cuda mlx-cuda-0-40-2: PASS=11 SKIP=18, 0 errors. 3 MLX loads, 0 cudaMemcpy errors with both GPUs visible, so #487 holds on this head.

The migration pause, observed on CUDA: the canary served 6 GGUF loads from the production store and logged 0 starting local compat GGUF migration lines. On v0.40.2 the same store starts one for every unconverted legacy GGUF. Children that v0.40.2 had already converted still served.

Profiles: the interim stamp already resolves to cuda-0-40-2 and mlx-cuda-0-40-2, as you say. I'll widen both to the v0.40.3 lineage in my own small PR once v0.40.3-dynres is cut, with their test_verdicts rows, so this PR doesn't grow a CUDA hunk.

Production :11497 stays on 0.40.2-dynres.1-4-g377f9d1. Deploying this is the maintainer's call.

gfx1151 gate 5 at 9f3baafce: VERDICT PASS, PASS=27 SKIP=5. The record is on the branch, a3e4cc020.

Setup:

  • Image: maxusai-ollama:0.40.2-dynres.1-6-g9f3baaf-rocm7-gfx1151. Its 19 native libraries are byte-identical to the v0.40.2-dynres.1 release's.
  • Preflight: --quality against rocm7-0-40-2, all three arches.
  • Environment: production's (two-pass, f16 KV, flash attention on, two slots). The run had a hard-linked clone of the store, and the Help wanted (Metal, ROCm): v0.40.2 cross-host vision benchmark — same tree, same cells #477 campaign was paused at a model boundary so nothing shared the GPU.

What v0.40.3 changes, seen live:

Gate status:

host gate 5
gfx1151 PASS

Metal gates 4 and 5 at 9f3baafce: all pass. I ran them on a :11437 stage against the clone store, in production's environment, under production's idle gate.

gate Metal host
4, build Go-only, at the head, stamp 0.40.2-dynres.1-6-g9f3baaf, onto the v0.40.2-dynres.1 payload. The lib/ollama tree is identical (diff -rq).
native tests go test ./mlx/... ./mlxrunner/... -p 1, OLLAMA_VISION_E2E=1: 1302 passed, 0 failed, 8 skipped
5, mlx-metal mlx-metal-0-40-2: PASS=23 SKIP=16. 35 of 39 rows match production's dynres.1 run byte for byte. The other four are the stamp, the stage path, the port, and gemma4_unified think_format at 498 tokens, inside its first-request spread (242–739, #486).
5, metal metal-0-40-2: PASS=6 SKIP=12, muse-glimmer.

One thing to fix in this PR: the head predates #467, so its expectations.toml has no metal-0-40-2, and --platform metal exits with "unknown (platform, version)". I ran the metal leg with main's file (b0bbc061b). Merging main into the branch fixes it.

The migration pause on Metal: neither run logged a local compat GGUF migration line. This store's GGUFs were already converted under 0.40.2, so this shows they still serve, not that the pause works. The CUDA host's run is the one that shows the pause.

Profiles: the interim stamp resolves to both 0.40.2 Metal profiles. I'll widen mlx-metal-0-40-2 and metal-0-40-2 to the v0.40.3 lineage in my own small PR once v0.40.3-dynres is cut, as the CUDA host is doing for its profiles.

Production :11435 stays on 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244. Deploying v0.40.3 is the maintainer's call.

Ready for review at d8b09e8d1. All three hosts pass gates 4 and 5 at 9f3baafce (gfx1151 6148008097, CUDA, Metal).

Since 9f3baafce:

No Go or native change since the gates: go build ./... is clean, and test_verdicts.py is OK. The interim stamp resolves on all five platforms: rocm7-0-40-2, metal-0-40-2, mlx-metal-0-40-2, cuda-0-40-2 and mlx-cuda-0-40-2.

Asked: a confirmation of this head from the CUDA host or the Metal host. After the merge, I cut v0.40.3-dynres at the fold commit, as ADR 0032 says. Deploying v0.40.3 stays each maintainer decision.

Metal confirms d8b09e8d1.

Fine to merge and cut v0.40.3-dynres from the Metal side.

CUDA confirms d8b09e8d1 too, after the merge.

  • Since the CUDA gates: no Go, go.mod or go.sum change between 9f3baafce and d8b09e8d1.
  • The fold's Go diff over main (377f9d14..fd14dc60): the commented-out StartLocalCompatibilityMigration block in server/routes.go (with compatmigrate dropped from its imports), the two cmd/launch warning suppressions and their tests, and the migration integration test's skip. Nothing else.
  • Checks:
    • go vet ./server ./cmd/launch is clean;
    • go test ./cmd/launch passes;
    • go test -run 'Migration|Compat' ./server passes (Go 1.26.0);
    • test_verdicts is OK.
  • CUDA profiles: 0.40.2-dynres.1-6-g9f3baaf and 0.40.2-dynres.1-8-gd8b09e8 resolve to cuda-0-40-2 and mlx-cuda-0-40-2.

CUDA production stays on 0.40.2-dynres.1-4-g377f9d1 until the maintainer decides on v0.40.3.

…he store migration

At 13:51 ollama-rocm moved to 0.40.2-dynres.1-6-g9f3baaf (#488's head; Go equal
to main 4d3387a; native libraries byte-identical to the release's), on the
maintainer's word. A legacy GGUF now loads without a migration line, and /opt
held at 59 GB. Post-deploy preflight: PASS=27 SKIP=5, equal to the point tag's
production run in every measured value. The rocm7 matrix row is this run.
