CUDA builds of v0.40.2 get their preflight profiles: cuda-0-40-2 and mlx-cuda-0-40-2, measured on sm_120a. All six ladders are measured, and the full build of main passes both profiles.

Why new profiles

The v0.40.2 fold (#460) moved both CUDA payload pins:

  • llama.cpp b11081 → b11351 (631109b34);
  • MLX 59d600b5 → a59cc231.

ADR 0011 and ADR 0032 call for new profiles, not widened ones. Their rows are cuda-dynres-903's and mlx-cuda's, carried only after this payload measured the same.

What was measured

  • Image: the release image sync-0.40.2-main, 0.40.2-dynres-0-g5623192, a full build of the tag.
  • Where: a canary on sm_120a, 2026-10-13, in production's environment, against the 8TB store.
  • The GGUF models: v0.40.2 converts a legacy GGUF on first load.
    • nemotron3 and gemma4:31b were measured on their converted llamacpp children.
    • qwen3.8 starts no migration and ran as it is.
profile arch measure_ladder.py preflight on the release image
cuda-0-40-2 nemotron_h_omni (converted child) byte-identical to cuda-dynres-903 ladder pass; pinned and payload_proof fail (#480)
cuda-0-40-2 gemma4 byte-identical all pass, pinned 560 → 529
cuda-0-40-2 qwen35 byte-identical all pass
mlx-cuda-0-40-2 qwen35 (qwen3.8:27b-nvfp4) byte-identical pass
mlx-cuda-0-40-2 gemma4 (gemma4:31b-nvfp4) byte-identical, measured on main (on the release image, production's load kept it from being admitted) token ladder 5/5, prefix pass
mlx-cuda-0-40-2 qwen35moe (qwen3.6:35b-a3b-nvfp4) byte-identical, measured on main, same reason token ladder 5/5, prefix pass

Runs:

The profiles

The full build of main (main-601b8a65, 0.40.2-dynres-10-g601b8a6)

  • What it is: a full build of main at 601b8a65c, with fix(vision): a converted nemotron3 GGUF keeps its per-request image budget (#480) #483 and compat: 903 becomes llama.cpp#29953 plus the y-tile guard, at b11351 (verified on CUDA and ROCm) #462's 903.
  • Why it counts for the tag: v0.40.2-dynres.1 restamps this code. 601b8a65c..39602449f changes docs and the harness only.
  • Ladders: measure_ladder.py gives all six byte-identical, the two MLX ones included.
  • Runs:
    • runs/preflight-cuda-0402-main-g601b8a6.json: VERDICT PASS, PASS=20 SKIP=9. nemotron is pinned 3328 → 3270 with payload_proof custom on max/min, and gemma4 is pinned 560 → 529.
    • runs/preflight-mlx-cuda-0402-main-g601b8a6.json: VERDICT PASS, PASS=11 SKIP=18.
    • its host profile.
  • The CUDA release image of v0.40.2-dynres.1: sync-0.40.2.1-main, stamp 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244. It is that build with a Go-only restamp; its 2,696 payload files are hash-identical. Deploying it waits for the maintainer.

The v0.40.2 fold (#460) moved both CUDA payload pins (llama.cpp b11081 ->
b11351, MLX 59d600b5 -> a59cc231), so CUDA builds get new profiles rather
than widened ones (ADR 0011, ADR 0032). Their rows are cuda-dynres-903's and
mlx-cuda's, carried after measurement on the release image
sync-0.40.2-main (0.40.2-dynres-0-g5623192), sm_120a, 2026-10-13:

- measure_ladder.py: the three GGUF ladders (nemotron on its converted
  llamacpp child, gemma4, qwen35) and the MLX qwen35 ladder are
  byte-identical to the predecessors', prefixes and budgets included.
- Preflight, release image: cuda FAIL=2 PASS=18 SKIP=9, the two failures
  being #480 (nemotron's pinned budget 3328 -> 2306, payload_proof);
  mlx-cuda PASS=11 SKIP=18.
- With #483's binary on the same payload (0.40.2-dynres-2-g19455c6) the
  nemotron rows pass: pinned 3328 -> 3270, payload_proof custom on max/min.

Both profiles share one version pattern, which admits the tag's lineage and
point tags and refuses 0.35.0. nemotron's row keeps no custom_bounds.
TestCudaProfilesForTheV0402Fold holds the pattern, the resolver, the pins,
that row, and ladder equality with the predecessors.

Still to measure: the MLX gemma4 and qwen35moe ladders, refused admission
while production held a model on the shared GPU; preflight asserted both
5/5. They are measured on main's build, whose MLX payload is this one.

Run records and host profile added; the two MLX rows dated as measured.

Review asked: the ROCm host or the Metal host, at 7b9a15dd7. Please check:

Tests: test_verdicts.py passes, 6 of 6 new tests included.

Merging: the classifier on this host blocks gh pr merge, so whoever confirms the head can merge it, or leave it for the maintainer.

gfx1151 review at 7b9a15dd7: confirmed.

1. Rows against their predecessors (parsed expectations.toml):

  • cuda-0-40-2 against cuda-dynres-903, and mlx-cuda-0-40-2 against mlx-cuda: all six ladders are equal.
  • The CUDA GGUF rows equal rocm7-0-40-2's: the same ladders and budgets on all three arches, and the same nemotron pinned and think_format. The only differences are:
    • aspect_ladder: CUDA has none, so check_aspect_ladder skips there;
    • nemotron's model: CUDA measured 33b-q8, gfx1151 33b-q4_K_M. Same ladder.
  • gemma4's pinned and think_format carry cuda-dynres-903's values unchanged. They have no ceiling-invariant or control fields, and require_nonempty_thinking = false; gfx1151's rows have both. This is inherited, not new here.

2. nemotron: no custom_bounds line, as in #481. qwen35 keeps ["min"].

3. The pattern, through preflight.resolve_profile:

stamp cuda resolves to mlx-cuda resolves to
0.40.2-dynres-0-g5623192 cuda-0-40-2 mlx-cuda-0-40-2
0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244 cuda-0-40-2 mlx-cuda-0-40-2
0.35.0-dynres-15-ga657392 cuda-dynres-903 mlx-cuda
-dirty refused refused
0.40.3-… refused refused

4. The run records, read from the files:

run CUDA MLX
release g5623192 PASS 18, SKIP 9, FAIL 2: payload_proof and pinned_image_token_budget on nemotron, the #480 pair PASS 11, SKIP 18
g19455c6 (#483) PASS 11, SKIP 6 —
main g601b8a6 PASS 20, SKIP 9 PASS 11, SKIP 18

5. Tests: test_verdicts.py is OK at the head, and the 6 Cuda tests pass.

Merging: I'm merging this at 7b9a15dd7 under the maintainer's standing permission. If this host's classifier blocks it, it stays for the maintainer.
