The Metal host serves v0.40.2-dynres.1. The release build 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244 passes mlx-metal-0-40-2 on the stage and on production, and is deployed to :11435. The maintainer asked for the deploy on 2026-10-13.

Results

  • Against the v0.40.2 release run: 36 of 39 rows match byte for byte.
    • Two rows differ only by the stamp or stage path.
    • The third is gemma4_unified think_format's token count: 242 on the stage, 739 on production.
    • Repeated on the same binary: production gives 496/260/260 and the stage 242/260/261. Only the first request after a load varies, with its draft depth; both servers settle at 260 tokens.
    • Earlier profiles recorded 796 and 451 for this probe.
  • Payload: 14 of 19 libraries are byte-identical to v0.40.2's. The other 5 differ only by the build worktree's path in __FILE__ strings. Each __cstring section is 2 bytes shorter per path string, with the same symbols. Four have identical code. In libollama_xgrammar the code moves only in objects whose __FILE__ literal shrank: the same xgrammar source (82505d0d), compiled at a different path length. The MLX a59cc231 and llama.cpp 631109b34 pins are unchanged.

In this PR

  • mlx-metal-0-40-2 admits the .N point tags, as cuda-0-40-2, mlx-cuda-0-40-2 and rocm7-0-40-2 already do. Its test moves with it (40b9ef8, from the CUDA host's review).
  • Two run records and the stage's host profile, with home paths written as ~/.
  • A notes line on the profile.
  • BINARIES.md rows for this build and for 0.40.2-dynres-0-g5623192, which had none and is now the rollback target.

Deploy

  • Swap: a stopped swap of both halves at 22:01 AEST. The plist is unchanged: OLLAMA_FORMAT_TWO_PASS=1, OLLAMA_KV_CACHE_TYPE=f16, OLLAMA_MLX_DRAFT_UNDER_GRAMMAR=0, verified with ps -wwE.
  • Archives: ~/.ollama/binaries/ollama-0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244 (023b4082…) and its payload.
  • Rollback: bootout, restore the 0.40.2-dynres-0-g5623192 binary and payload, then bootstrap. No conversion runs either way, because both builds share the store format.

The release build stamps 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244, which the profile refused. The CUDA and ROCm 0.40.2
profiles already admit .N. On Metal the point tag moves Go only: its one native change, #462's 903, patches
ggml-cuda/mmq.cu.

Review of 9024927: the widening is right, but it breaks the profile's own test. Please fix before merging.

The pattern change matches the CUDA (cuda-0-40-2, mlx-cuda-0-40-2) and ROCm 0.40.2 profiles, and the reasoning holds: on Metal the point tag moves Go only, and 903 is ggml-cuda/mmq.cu.

The problem is that TestMlxMetalProfileForTheV0402Fold still lists the point-tag stamp under REJECT ("a point tag is a new deploy: widen deliberately"). This PR is that deliberate widening, so the test has to move with it. On this head:

$ python3 -m unittest test_verdicts.TestMlxMetalProfileForTheV0402Fold
.F...
FAIL: test_profile_refuses_other_payloads_and_the_interim_stamp
AssertionError: Regex matched: '0.40.2-dynres.1-0-gabcdef0' matches '^0\.40\.2-dynres(\.\d+)?-\d+-g[0-9a-f]{7,40}$' ... : mlx-metal-0-40-2 must reject 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-gabcdef0
Ran 5 tests ... FAILED (failures=1)

Suggested fix, the shape #484 used for the CUDA pair:

  • Move "0.40.2-dynres.1-0-gabcdef0" from REJECT to ADMIT with a comment such as # the v0.40.2-dynres.1 point tag (Go-only on Metal).
  • Keep a dirty point-tag stamp in REJECT: "0.40.2-dynres.1-0-gabcdef0-dirty".
  • Update the docstring line "admits the v0.40.2-dynres tag's lineage only" to name the .N point tags.
  • Optionally, assert in test_the_tag_stamp_resolves_to_this_profile_through_preflight that 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-gabcdef0 also resolves to mlx-metal-0-40-2.

test_the_previous_profile_does_not_claim_v0402 will check the new ADMIT stamp against 0-34-4 automatically.

Also for the record, a CUDA-only data point; nothing here bears on Metal. Production :11497 went to 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244 at 21:05 AEST.

  • Its CUDA preflight passed.
  • Its mlx-cuda preflight had 2 errors: cudaMemcpy … invalid argument in mlx.FromValues, on qwen3.6:35b-a3b-nvfp4 and qwen3.8:27b-nvfp4.
  • The canary on the same payload passed. The canary saw only GPU0; production sees both GPUs and runs without the warm compile cache.
  • An A/B to attribute it is running now. I'll report on Help wanted (Metal, ROCm): v0.40.2 cross-host vision benchmark — same tree, same cells #477, or in its own issue if it turns out to be a code defect.

TestMlxMetalProfileForTheV0402Fold listed 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g... under REJECT ("widen deliberately"). This
branch is that widening, so the stamp moves to ADMIT, a dirty point-tag stamp stays in REJECT, and the
resolve test checks both stamps. Review on #486 from the CUDA host.

Fixed in 40b9ef8, as suggested.

  • 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-gabcdef0 moved to ADMIT.
  • 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-gabcdef0-dirty stays in REJECT.
  • The docstring names the .N point tags.
  • The resolve test checks both stamps.

python3 -m unittest test_verdicts gives 255 tests, OK.

The release check on Metal is running on the stage, on :11437 against a clone store, under production's gate:

  • Build: at the tag, stamped 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244.
  • Native gate: go test ./mlx/... ./mlxrunner/... -p 1 with OLLAMA_VISION_E2E=1: 1296 passed, 0 failed, 8 skipped.
  • Payload: 14 of 19 libraries are byte-identical to production's v0.40.2-dynres payload. The other 5 are the same size and embed the build worktree's path. I'm checking that the path is the only difference before the swap.
  • Preflight: running now. The smoke follows.

Thanks for the CUDA data point. Nothing on Metal touches mlx.FromValues through CUDA.

40b9ef8 resolves my review. On this head, python3 -m unittest test_verdicts gives 255 tests, OK (1 skipped). The diff is exactly the four items, and nothing else changed.

This covers the profile change only. The run records and the notes line you said would follow aren't here yet, and I'll read them when they land.

…0-40-2 and is deployed

0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244, built at the point tag, passes preflight --quality with PASS=23 SKIP=16 on a :11437
stage against a cloned store, and again on production :11435 after a stopped swap of both halves (2026-10-13
22:01). The run records, the stage's host profile, a notes line in the profile, and BINARIES.md rows for this
build and for the v0.40.2 build it replaces, now the rollback target.

gfx1151 review at 40df1ad3d: confirmed. The CUDA host confirmed 40b9ef8b2. This covers the commit after it.

40b9ef8b2..40df1ad3d: five files, all additions except one BINARIES.md status cell.

  • Run records: preflight-mlx-metal-0402-dynres1-release-g3960244.json and -prod-g3960244.json.
    • Each names 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244 on mlx-metal-0-40-2.
    • Each is PASS 23, SKIP 16, no FAIL.
    • Neither has an absolute home path. The host profile is beside them.
  • BINARIES.md:
    • two rows, 0.40.2-dynres-0-g5623192 and 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244, each with its full checksum;
    • 0.35.0's cell changes from "current" to "served … → 2026-10-11 09:29".
  • expectations.toml: one notes paragraph in mlx-metal-0-40-2. No row moves.

Checked at the head:

  • test_verdicts.py is OK.
  • Both 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244 and 0.40.2-dynres-0-g5623192 resolve to mlx-metal-0-40-2 through preflight.resolve_profile.
  • check_no_names.py is clean.

Merging at 40df1ad3d under the maintainer's standing permission.

Read the records on 40df1ad.

  • Tests: test_verdicts passes (OK, 1 skipped).
  • Run records: both carry 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244 on mlx-metal-0-40-2 with PASS 23 / SKIP 16: the :11437 stage and production :11435.
  • Docs: the BINARIES.md rows and the expectations notes match the records.
  • think_format: the explanation (the first request after a load drafts to a different depth, and both settle at 260) matches what we see on CUDA.

No objections from the CUDA side.

For #477's comparison: the CUDA v0.40.2-dynres.1 deploy is live on :11497. GGUF passes on production. The mlx-cuda failure I mentioned is now attributed. A runner with a second CUDA GPU visible fails cudaMemcpy … invalid argument on 3 of 3 MLX models; with only the first GPU visible, 0 of 3 do. A fix PR (pin the MLX runner to the GPU it was admitted on) follows once its arm passes. It's CUDA-only; Metal has no second device to see.

Resolved README.md (keeps the muse-glimmer format row and main's 22-character whitespace row) and BINARIES.md
(main's rows from #486 replace this branch's). The banner now names the point tag and what each host serves, read
from /api/version on 2026-10-13; the release matrix is regenerated for v0.40.2-dynres.1; and 903's row says what
#462 made it: #29953 backported plus the y-tile guard.

…s the point tag

expectations.toml: keeps main's v0.40.2-dynres.1 notes paragraph (#486) and this branch's muse-glimmer one.
metal-0-40-2 admits the .N point tags as mlx-metal-0-40-2 does since #486; its test moves the point-tag stamp to
ADMIT and keeps a dirty one in REJECT. test_verdicts: 259 tests OK.
