Adds PageBroker startup configuration for S3 storage and Model Streamer restores.

  • --storage-config supplies the S3 store identity, connection settings, and upload limits.
  • Optional --model-streamer-config tunes restore concurrency, memory use, retries, and logging. Defaults apply when omitted.
  • Validates configuration before accepting requests and preserves restore settings when replacing a failed session.

Credentials are resolved at startup. Credential and configuration changes require restarting PageBroker. Filesystem transfers continue to use POSIX.

Based on #416. Operator and Helm wiring is supplied separately by #663, stacked on #492; it provides the core S3 configuration and credentials mount, but does not expose every optional setting.

Stack: #264 → #258 → #410 → #416 → #469.
Refs #267 and #237.

Validation: prior runs covered native CPU tests, configuration and recovery tests, local HTTP/HTTPS S3 tests, and checkpoint lifecycle tests. Full make check remains blocked by an existing toolchain issue. GPU and cloud-cluster tests were not run, and the combined deployment with #663 has not been verified.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added startup configuration files for S3 storage and Model Streamer settings, with validation and clear errors for invalid options.
    • Model Streamer settings can be customized through configuration files or environment variables. S3-related defaults are applied when storage is configured.
    • S3 credentials continue to be resolved externally; storage settings include support for TLS and custom CA certificates.
  • Documentation
    • Added configuration guidance, deployment instructions, and details about supported settings and precedence.

Walkthrough

Adds bounded JSON configuration for S3 storage and Model Streamer reader settings. The daemon resolves settings and credentials at startup, applies native environment settings, and passes reader options to the transfer engine. The change also adds configuration validation and checkpoint integration tests, with related documentation.

Misconfigured S3 endpoints such as "https://" are accepted at startup and fail only on the first S3 operation. Replacement-session environment drift is reported as a client error. The restart integration test can be flaky. These issues are narrow and recoverable, so the change is mergeable with these items noted for follow-up.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

ValidateEnvironment rejects replacement sessions when the process environment drifts.

AcquireRestore calls CreateRestore to replace a failed session. If any code calls setenv for a validated name after startup, ValidateEnvironment throws std::invalid_argument. The error is then converted to INVALID_REQUEST by RethrowS3TransferError. A recoverable server-side condition thus reaches clients as a client error. The throw also happens in StageRestore after the failed session has already been detected. Map this failure to INTERNAL_ERROR or STORAGE_ERROR. Convert it before it reaches the std::invalid_argument handler.

agent/pagebroker/daemon.cpp:766-776
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not apply Model Streamer configuration in filesystem mode.

When --storage-config is absent, the daemon still resolves Model Streamer JSON and environment settings, then applies them before constructing the broker. The broker subsequently selects PosixCopyEngine, so no Model Streamer engine consumes these settings. An invalid Model Streamer value can therefore reject a filesystem-only daemon, and valid settings can mutate its process environment. This violates the documented S3-only scope of Model Streamer and the POSIX contract for filesystem transfers.

Gate resolution and environment mutation on the presence of storage configuration.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

S3 configuration errors lose their reason and use the wrong exit code.

ReadS3Config and the active_transactions >= max_concurrent_requests check run outside the try block. That block handles only Model Streamer errors. A bad --storage-config therefore reaches the catch-all in main.cpp (lines 29-31). That handler drops what(), prints a generic "invalid configuration or unavailable local resources" message, and returns ExitCode::FAILURE (1).

A bad --model-streamer-config file behaves differently. It returns INVALID_ARGUMENTS (2) and names the field. Each of the following S3 problems produces the same opaque exit 1 as a missing credential:

  • a non-canonical prefix
  • an HTTP endpoint without allowHttp
  • a relative caFile
  • an out-of-range limit
  • an admission limit that is too large

Operators cannot tell from the logs which S3 setting is wrong. The parser's messages contain only fixed schema text, not values. One exception: nlohmann type_error/out_of_range messages can quote the JSON key names. Print the std::invalid_argument text and return INVALID_ARGUMENTS. Map nlohmann type and key errors to a fixed message.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The restart hook returns before the restarted daemon is listening.

docker restart returns when the container process starts, not when PageBroker is ready. The daemon only creates its listener after several steps:

  • it resolves both configs and credentials
  • it sets up the environment and the file-descriptor limit
  • it constructs the GPU engine

1.sock is on the bind mount, so the old socket file stays on the host until CreateListener removes it. The Go subtest calls other.Commit(ctx, "restart") (line 545 in s3_integration_test.go) right after control(t, "restart", id). That call can hit the stale socket and get ECONNREFUSED. expectCode then fails with an error that is not a FailureError. The test is flaky under load.

Wait for the new listener to accept connections before the control request returns.

Review comment at @agent/pagebroker/tests/checkpoint_integration.py at line 248:
Update the restart hook around service.restart to wait until the restarted
daemon accepts connections before returning: run docker restart, poll the Unix
socket at root / "1.sock" with a short timeout, and raise if readiness is not
reached. Add the required socket import and preserve the existing restart
behavior.

Correct the uploadRequestRetries=0 documentation.

uploadRequestRetries=0 is accepted and supported. The CRT retry setup preserves the initial request and disables only subsequent retry scheduling. The documentation is therefore incorrect because it says that zero disables SDK request retries, while the surrounding text says that the CRT NO_RETRY strategy cannot be used directly.

Document that zero disables subsequent CRT retries while still allowing the initial request, or reject zero during validation if that behavior is not intended.

Report sanitized S3 configuration errors as invalid arguments and reuse the owning timeout defaults. Add a Make target and CI coverage for packaged-daemon HTTP/TLS checkpoint tests. Replace cancellation sleep assumptions with bounded completion checks and valid native-I/O race outcomes.

Validation: 45 focused C++ tests, PageBroker Go unit tests, 12 Python fixture tests, and HTTP/TLS checkpoint integration passed using local fixtures and the unmodified upstream AWS SDK.

Reject S3 endpoints without a host during configuration parsing.

https:// is nonempty and passes the HTTPS-prefix check. S3Connection::Validate() checks only the scheme, so it also accepts this value. The daemon can then start with valid credentials because S3StorageBackend validates settings without creating S3Client. The first remote S3 operation calls Client(), where ClientConfiguration() throws S3 endpoint has no host. Reject the scheme-only endpoint before the daemon accepts requests.
