Adds per-file S3 uploads and bounded metadata reads and create-only writes through the rclone CLI. PageBroker uses fork/execve with credentials captured once at startup and passed through each child's environment. The wrapper preserves cancellation, deadlines, resource limits, source-file ownership, and reporting of uncertain writes and multipart cleanup.

The Dockerfile downloads the official prebuilt rclone release, verifies its pinned SHA-256 checksum, and includes its license and dependency notices. PageBroker no longer builds or links the AWS C++ SDK; Model Streamer's prebuilt S3 plugin retains its own AWS implementation. Rclone owns multipart transfers and bounded retries, including its fixed internal retry; operation deadlines bound the whole sequence. There is no separate payload SHA-256 pass.

Based on #258. Artifact indexing and broker integration follow in #416, with configuration in #469. Compatibility was checked in a temporary checkout containing those downstream changes.

Validation: PageBroker component tests, local HTTP/HTTPS S3 tests, subprocess cancellation/cleanup tests, resource probes, Go tests/builds, license checks, and Helm lint pass. Full make check remains blocked by the existing toolchain gate. GPU execution and real AWS tests were not run.

Refs #267 and #237.

Walkthrough

Adds an S3 client that performs uploads and metadata operations through a packaged rclone executable. Adds process lifecycle handling, S3 round-trip and resource tests, and a Moto-based fault-injection fixture.

Changes

S3 transfer client

Layer / File(s) Summary
Package rclone and wire build targets
agent/pagebroker/Dockerfile, agent/pagebroker/compliance/gen-attribution.sh, agent/pagebroker/compliance/README.source.txt, agent/pagebroker/transfer/s3/README.md, agent/pagebroker/Makefile
Downloads and verifies rclone 1.75.2, stages its executable and legal materials, and copies them into the build and runtime images. Compliance materials describe the packaged files and distinguish PageBroker’s rclone-based client from Model Streamer’s separate AWS implementation.
Define S3 client contracts and configuration
agent/pagebroker/transfer/s3/s3_client.hpp, agent/pagebroker/transfer/s3/s3_client.cpp, agent/pagebroker/transfer/s3/tests/s3_client_test.cpp, agent/pagebroker/Makefile
Adds S3 connection, object, limit, error, and client types. Implements credential resolution, input validation, resource limits, and client initialization. Adds unit tests for credentials, validation, and cancellation or deadline outcomes.
Execute and manage rclone processes
agent/pagebroker/transfer/s3/s3_client.cpp, agent/pagebroker/transfer/s3/tests/rclone_process_test.cpp, agent/pagebroker/transfer/s3/tests/rclone_test_child.cpp, agent/pagebroker/Makefile, agent/pagebroker/transfer/s3/README.md
Runs rclone with configured arguments and environment, bounded output, and controlled descriptors. Handles cancellation, deadlines, child cleanup, and process errors. Adds process tests and a test child.
Implement and validate S3 operations
agent/pagebroker/transfer/s3/s3_client.cpp, agent/pagebroker/transfer/s3/tests/s3_round_trip_test.cpp, agent/pagebroker/tests/s3_integration.py, agent/pagebroker/tests/test_s3_integration.py, agent/pagebroker/Makefile, agent/pagebroker/transfer/s3/README.md
Implements uploads and exact-key HEAD, GET, and PUT operations. Adds round-trip tests for retries, cancellation, multipart outcomes, TLS rejection, and memory use. Adds fault-injection checks for request forwarding, response loss, multipart cleanup, and concurrency.

This change moves S3 uploads to rclone. Plaintext HTTP endpoints are still accepted with credentials and with payload signing and checksums disabled. Several earlier build, concurrency and validation concerns also remain open. Resolve or explicitly accept these before merging.

Add a fallback for unavailable close_range.

If syscall(SYS_close_range, 4U, UINT_MAX, 0U) returns ENOSYS or EPERM, the child calls ChildFailure. The parent then throws S3Error with ExecFailed, and every operation using RunRclone fails before execve.

Close inherited descriptors with a child-safe fallback when close_range is unavailable. Preserve exec_errno in the parent error diagnostics so operators can distinguish ENOSYS, EPERM, and ENOENT. Guard any syscall-number definition for the supported target architectures.

Reject hostless HTTP(S) endpoints at construction.

HasSupportedEndpoint accepts https://, http://, and http://:9000 because it checks only the scheme prefix. The old CRT path rejected these values before client construction. The current code forwards them to rclone, where a child failure is reported as generic RcloneFailure.

Keep mixed-case schemes rejected. The old public validation was also case-sensitive, and rclone v1.75.2 does not normalize mixed-case schemes. Do not change line 557 to a case-insensitive check.

Review comment at @agent/pagebroker/transfer/s3/s3_client.cpp at line 225:
Update HasSupportedEndpoint to reject HTTP(S) endpoints with no hostname,
including bare schemes and forms such as “http://:9000”. Preserve empty-endpoint
acceptance and case-sensitive scheme matching; do not change the separate
mixed-case validation.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Lost wakeup: notify_one can leave a free slot unused while another operation waits.

The Operation constructor does not take a slot if its wait ends with a cancellation or deadline. CheckRcloneCancellation throws at Line 394, before ++owner.active_ at Line 395. The constructor throws, so ~Operation does not run and no other wakeup is issued.

Failure case:

  1. Waiters A and B are blocked and active_ == limit.
  2. The slot owner finishes, and ~Operation calls notify_one.
  3. notify_one selects A. A is cancelled or past its deadline at that moment.
  4. A throws and takes no slot. B is not notified.
  5. B waits with a free slot until another operation finishes or B's own deadline expires. The default deadline is 2 hours, and if no other operation is active, nothing else will wake B.

Use notify_all. The waiter count is bounded by caller threads, and active_files is small, so the cost is low.

Consider adding a test with two waiters, where one is cancelled as the slot owner releases.

around `wait_until` and `CheckRcloneCancellation` to pass the wakeup to another
waiter when cancellation occurs while an active-file slot is available. Preserve
the existing cancellation exception and increment `owner.active_` only when the
operation proceeds.
- Around line 586-587: Remove the HTTP-specific kHttpArguments insertion from
the endpoint handling in S3 client argument construction so plaintext HTTP
retains payload signing and checksum protections.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fix the lost wakeup when a cancelled waiter consumes notify_one.

~Operation calls notify_one(). The notification can reach a waiter whose cancellation or deadline fires at the same moment. That waiter throws at Line 538 without taking the slot. It also does not pass the notification on. Its constructor throws, so ~Operation never runs for it. Another waiter can then stay blocked with a slot free until the next release or until its own deadline. The default operation_timeout is two hours.

Pass the wakeup on before throwing, or use notify_all() in the destructor.

Update the waiter logic in the `Operation` constructor around `wait_until` and

Do not disable payload signing and checksums on plaintext HTTP endpoints.

For every http:// endpoint, this code adds --s3-use-unsigned-payload=true and --s3-use-data-integrity-protections=false. Plain HTTP gives no transport integrity. The SigV4 payload hash and the S3 checksums are the only protection on that path. With both disabled, a network attacker can change checkpoint payload bytes, and S3 still accepts the upload. PageBroker computes no application-level digest, so a later restore loads the changed bytes into the workload. In-cluster MinIO or Ceph over HTTP is a realistic production configuration.

If these flags exist only for compatibility with the Moto fixture, keep them out of production code. Pass them through a test-only option, or fix the fixture. Otherwise, keep signed payloads on HTTP and disable signing only for HTTPS if necessary.

Use >= for the multipart flag at the cutoff boundary.

The client sets --s3-upload-cutoff to part_size. rclone switches to multipart when size >= UploadCutoff, so an upload of exactly part_size bytes uses multipart in rclone. Line 707 passes size > limits_.part_size, which sets multipart to false at that size. RethrowWriteError sets cleanup_state to UNCONFIRMED only when remote == UNKNOWN && multipart. If an exact-part_size upload fails with an uncertain remote state, the error can report NOT_NEEDED. Multipart parts may then remain without a cleanup signal.

Run the bounded GET for zero-size HEAD results.

S3Client::Get returns before issuing GET when HEAD reports size zero. If the object becomes nonempty after HEAD, the method can return an empty string instead of rejecting the inconsistent size. Remove the early return so the existing output limit and follow-up size checks detect the change.

Replace the direct AWS C++ CRT client with fork/execve calls to the official checksum-pinned rclone binary. Remove SDK build and link dependencies, and package upstream source and license attribution without compiling or patching rclone.

Keep the implementation in s3_client.hpp/cpp. Retain per-file upload, object-size checks, bounded metadata reads and create-only metadata writes. Return uploaded byte counts and HTTP status for storage errors; propagate CancellationError directly. Require caller deadlines and remove unused remote-outcome bookkeeping and the separate exec-error pipe. Preserve admission limits, source validation, bounded output, and child termination and reaping.

Capture explicit or environment credentials once at startup and pass the snapshot through each child's environment. Deployments resolve other credential providers externally. Document bounded rclone retries and caller confirmation of uncertain publication.

Cover credentials, subprocess isolation and cleanup, conditional writes, fault handling, HTTP/TLS, and aggregate memory with the existing test workflow. Downstream artifact and configuration callers will adopt the narrower API when restacked.

Block credentialed HTTP endpoints in production.

S3Connection::Validate() accepts http:// endpoints. S3Client passes the endpoint and resolved credentials to rclone and enables its HTTP-specific arguments. A production caller can therefore send credentials and object data without TLS protection. Enforce HTTPS in the production configuration path, and allow HTTP only through an explicit test or emulator setting.

Review comment at @agent/pagebroker/transfer/s3/README.md around lines 69 - 70:
Update the production configuration path used by S3Client to reject HTTP
endpoints and require HTTPS; allow HTTP only when an explicit test or emulator
setting is enabled. Keep S3Connection::Validate behavior aligned with that
distinction so production callers cannot pass credentialed HTTP endpoints.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Make the memory probes fail closed when no child process is observed.

ProcessMemory finds rclone only through /proc/self/task/*/children. That file exists only when the kernel has CONFIG_PROC_CHILDREN. If it is missing or empty, the sampler records only the parent RSS. The parent is small, so every EXPECT_LT(memory.Peak(), ...) bound passes without measuring rclone. The probes exist to enforce the resource limits, so they must not pass silently in this case.

Record whether the sampler saw a child. Assert that in the upload probes.

Proposed fix
             auto rss = Rss("/proc/self/statm");
+            if (!children.empty())
+              children_seen_.store(true);
             for (auto pid : children)
               rss += Rss("/proc/" + std::to_string(pid) + "/statm");

Outside the selected range, add the accessor and member:

  bool SawChild() const { return children_seen_.load(); }
  // ...
  std::atomic<bool> children_seen_{false};

Then, in UploadMemoryProbe and ConcurrentUploadMemoryProbe, assert before the RSS bounds:

  EXPECT_TRUE(memory.SawChild()) << "rclone child RSS was not sampled";

around lines 50 - 60:
Update ProcessMemory to record whether its sampling loop finds any child process
and expose that state; add assertions in UploadMemoryProbe and
ConcurrentUploadMemoryProbe before their RSS bounds so both probes fail if no
child RSS was sampled.
