feat(pagebroker): publish and restore S3 checkpoint artifacts - #416
Adds S3 checkpoint storage to PageBroker using the uploader from #410 and the Model Streamer restore engine from #258.
Uploads checkpoint files, then publishes an index containing their paths, sizes, and permissions.
Retries uncertain index publication without uploading the files again.
Validates the index and object sizes before restoring files into local staging. Payload contents are not verified by digest.
Supports manifest-only retrieval and uses the shared transaction lifecycle for cancellation, expiry, resource limits, and cleanup.
Direct transfers are unsupported. Filesystem storage continues to use POSIX.
This PR accepts typed S3 settings. Daemon configuration and startup wiring follow in #469; the daemon in this PR still uses filesystem storage. Operator and Helm wiring is supplied separately by #663, stacked on #492.
Unit tests remain in this PR. Python fixtures, real S3 transfers, daemon process tests, and checkpoint lifecycle tests are collected in #715, based on #469.
Validation: the retained native unit suite passed on this PR’s cleaned tree. Repository Go tests/builds and the moved integration suites passed during the separation. Full make check remains blocked by the existing Go/linter compatibility issue. GPU and cloud-cluster tests were not run.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added experimental S3-backed checkpoint publication and restore, with configurable connection, upload, timeout, staging, and transaction settings.
Added artifact metadata retrieval, which provides the artifact manifest.
Checkpoint indexes validate artifact structure, paths, permissions, and file sizes.
Important Notes
Restore checks do not verify checkpoint payload contents or detect same-size corruption.
S3 restore preparation does not support direct transfers.
S3 configuration must match the relevant environment settings.
Documentation
Added guidance on S3 configuration, artifact lifecycle, failure handling, and deployment responsibilities.

Walkthrough
PageBroker adds configurable S3 checkpoint storage and Model Streamer support for artifact operations. Broker requests can retrieve artifact metadata, restore from an artifact, and checkpoint to a target. Checkpoint indexes validate structure and object sizes, but do not verify payload digests.
Adds S3 transfer settings and environment validation, bounded JSON parsing, and checkpoint-index parsing and serialization with path, permission, count, and size limits. Adds a SHA-256 utility, while the checkpoint index stores file sizes and does not verify payload digests. Updates the proposal’s restore and test descriptions to reflect size checks instead of digest checks.
S3 artifact storage and publication agent/pagebroker/transfer/s3/s3_storage_backend.*, agent/pagebroker/transfer/s3/tests/s3_storage_backend_test.cpp, agent/pagebroker/S3.md
Adds artifact identity resolution, inventory checks, payload uploads, index publication and confirmation, and staged restore preparation. Tests and documentation describe configuration, validation, retries, and outcomes when publication cannot be confirmed.
Model Streamer transfer integration agent/pagebroker/transfer/engine/transfer_engine.*, agent/pagebroker/transfer/engine/model_streamer/*, agent/pagebroker/transfer/engine/model_streamer/tests/*
Adds artifact-resolution and validation methods to the transfer-engine interface. Configures Model Streamer from S3Config and delegates artifact, restore, and checkpoint operations to the S3 backend. Restore staging no longer performs the removed inventory validation; S3 inventory validation occurs during backend preparation.
Adds broker routing for artifact metadata, artifact-addressed restores, and target-addressed checkpoints. Startup cleanup handles both POSIX and S3 staging namespaces. Updates comments and tests for request validation, metadata responses, cleanup behavior, and runtime crypto-library packaging.

Resolve target metadata through the configured artifact engine.
When LookupArtifactMetadata sends an ArtifactTarget, Broker::Metadata rejects it before calling the existing ResolveArtifactTarget path. Join reading before provider_reader.Stage(). The test can run two Model Streamer coordinators at the same time.
reader and provider_reader are separate ModelStreamerRestore instances in the same process. reading runs reader.Stage(...) asynchronously. provider_reader.Stage(...) on Line 915 runs after PublishTree. Nothing orders the two calls. If the reader restore is still running, both coordinators hold a native session at once.
model_streamer_restore.hpp Lines 39-43 state the constraint: "Only one coordinator may run a native session per process; independent concurrent coordinators are unsupported." On a slow S3 fixture, this test can fail intermittently or hit undefined native behavior.

Implement ArtifactTarget lookup in Broker::Metadata.
When GetArtifactMetadataRequest contains a target, Broker::Metadata throws std::invalid_argument. The broker converts this error to INVALID_REQUEST, so LookupArtifactMetadata cannot resolve the publication or obtain its manifest directory. Resolve the target in this branch, then pass the resolved artifact through the existing validation and staging flow. This localized broker correction addresses the target-selector failure; it is separate from the later no-S3 engine-lookup failure.

Review comment at @agent/pagebroker/broker.cpp around lines 549 - 558:
Implement target lookup in Broker::Metadata by resolving operation.target() to
its artifact instead of throwing when operation.has_target() is true. Pass the
resolved artifact through the existing ValidateArtifact and StageRestore flow,
preserving the current artifact-based path when no target is provided.

Closing the target-based metadata lookup concern from #416 (review) for this stack: the production agent flow in #694 uses GetArtifactMetadata with a published descriptor. LookupArtifactMetadata has no production caller in that branch. Target-based recovery can be implemented when a production flow needs it. This finding is in a review summary, so GitHub has no resolve-thread control for it.

Adds S3 checkpoint storage to PageBroker using the uploader from #410 and the Model Streamer restore engine from #258.
Stack: #264 → #258 → #410 → #416 → #469.
Refs #267 and #237.
Full
make checkremains blocked by the existing Go/linter compatibility issue. GPU and cloud-cluster tests were not run.Summary by CodeRabbit
