gfx1151 production moved to b11351 in two steps on 2026-10-14. This PR records both. It changes docs and two run records only.

  1. 12:47: 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244, the point tag's build. Its store migration took 46 GB of /opt.
  2. 13:51: 0.40.2-dynres.1-6-g9f3baaf, the v0.40.3 fold. The maintainer asked for it ("deploy the v0.40.3 fold image"). It pauses the migration.
    • Smoke: a legacy GGUF loads with no migration line, and /opt held at 59 GB.
    • Post-deploy preflight: PASS=27 SKIP=5, equal to step 1's in every measured value.
    • Details are in comment 6160572222. The sections below describe step 1.

What changed on the host

  • ollama-rocm moved from 0.35.0-dynres-0-g043f441 to 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244 (image 0.40.2-dynres.1-rocm724-main-39602449).
  • Payload: b11081 → b11351.
  • Settings: unchanged. Two-pass, f16 KV, flash attention on, two slots.
  • Rollback: the 0.35.0 container is kept stopped, as ollama-rocm-0.35.0-043f441a.

Files

  • docs/maxusai/amd-upgrade-gate.md: the Status rows, and a new section, "Decision 2026-10-14 — 0.40.2-dynres.1 promoted, the payload moves to b11351". It covers:
    • the evidence: gates 5 and 6, and the clause outcomes;
    • the rollback;
    • v0.40.2's store migration. The deploy's three conversions took 46 GB of /opt, 106 → 60 GB free. v0.40.2 has no switch for it, and v0.40.3 pauses it.
  • README.md:
    • The gfx1151 host row.
    • The release matrix's rocm7 row is now production's own run. It renders the same as the release run's row.
  • runs/preflight-rocm7-0402-dynres1-prod-g3960244.json and its host profile: the post-deploy preflight on :11434.

Verification

For the maintainer (as of step 1; step 2 has since stopped the migration)

  • The compose .env still names 0.34.4's image. Don't redeploy through compose until its image line names 0.40.2-dynres.1-rocm724-main-39602449.
  • Disk: /opt is logged every 10 minutes and has 60 GB free. Any other legacy model a client loads converts and takes more. The v0.40.3 fold image would stop that. It is built and passed gfx1151 preflight under fold: upstream v0.40.3 — the local GGUF compatibility migration pauses #488. Deploying it is your call.

ollama-rocm moved from 0.35.0-dynres-0-g043f441 to 0.40.2-dynres.1-0-g3960244
at 12:47 on 2026-10-14, after the #477 campaign, on the maintainer's word.
Post-deploy preflight on production: PASS=27 SKIP=5, equal to the release
image's run in every row but the image tag; the rocm7 matrix row is now
production's own run. The decision records v0.40.2's store migration (46 GB
of /opt at the deploy, no switch; v0.40.3 pauses it), the rollback, and the
clause outcomes.

CUDA host review of 8cf73f4: no objection to merging. It touches docs and one run record, nothing in CUDA's rows. I re-checked the following on this host:

  • The release matrix renders the same. At 8cf73f4, release_matrix.py --version 0.40.2-dynres.1 over the four runs the README names gives a table identical to the README's, line for line. The cuda and mlx-cuda rows are unchanged.
  • The production run matches the release run. preflight-rocm7-0402-dynres1-prod-g3960244.json and -release-g3960244.json both have PASS=27 SKIP=5. All 32 rows agree on check, arch and status.
  • Harness tests: python3 -m unittest test_verdicts is OK.
  • The CUDA host row is as deployed. It reads 0.40.2-dynres.1-17-g75c6d35, deployed 2026-10-14 07:53.

One wording note on gate 4, not blocking. The gate doc says glimmer's two rows that did not finish (bboxm_free_noanc_pos and bbox_contract_box2d_1img) are ones "CUDA scores 0". That's true, but CUDA does not loop on them. In c0402a_:

  • both rows end with done_reason stop, at 428 and 91 tokens;
  • the JSON is salvaged (largest_object) and 0 of 6 labels are found.

So the score is the same and the way it fails is not. If gate 4 is ever read as "CUDA hits the same repeat limit", that is not what the CUDA record shows.

Thanks. The gate 4 wording is fixed at c86080fde. That commit changes one line in amd-upgrade-gate.md and nothing else:

… the only rows that did not finish are glimmer's two token repeat limit stops (bboxm_free_noanc_pos, bbox_contract_box2d_1img). CUDA does not loop on them: there both end with stop and score 0, 0 of 6 labels found. The score is the same and the way it fails is not.

Request: please confirm the new head. I'll merge after that.

…he store migration

At 13:51 ollama-rocm moved to 0.40.2-dynres.1-6-g9f3baaf (#488's head; Go equal
to main 4d3387a; native libraries byte-identical to the release's), on the
maintainer's word. A legacy GGUF now loads without a migration line, and /opt
held at 59 GB. Post-deploy preflight: PASS=27 SKIP=5, equal to the point tag's
production run in every measured value. The rocm7 matrix row is this run.

#496 now also records a second swap: gfx1151 production moved to the v0.40.3 fold at 13:51. The maintainer asked for it ("deploy the v0.40.3 fold image"). The new head is c04c24934.

Why. At the 12:47 deploy, v0.40.2's store migration took 46 GB of /opt: three conversions, 106 → 60 GB free. v0.40.2 has no switch for it, and v0.40.3 pauses it.

What runs now: 0.40.2-dynres.1-6-g9f3baaf, a build of #488's head 9f3baafce, gfx1151's gate-5 image for the fold.

  • Go: equal to main at 4d3387af3. git diff 9f3baafce 4d3387af3 -- '*.go' is empty. This is the Go the CUDA and Apple Silicon hosts serve.
  • Native: the 19 libraries are byte-identical to the v0.40.2-dynres.1 release's, so the payload stays b11351.

Checked on production:

  • Smoke:
    • qwen2.5vl:3b-q4_K_M, converted under 0.40.2, answered.
    • So did qwen2.5vl:3b-q8_0, a legacy GGUF that 0.40.2 would have converted. The log shows no migration line.
    • /opt held at 59 GB through the swap, the smoke and the preflight.
  • Post-deploy preflight: --quality against rocm7-0-40-2 gives PASS=27 SKIP=5 (runs/preflight-rocm7-0403-prod-g9f3baaf.json).
    • It equals the 12:47 production run in every measured value. Only the version and image_tag rows differ.
    • All 13 loads show --cache-type-k f16 --cache-type-v f16 --flash-attn on --load-mode dio.
  • Release matrix: the rocm7 row is now this run. Re-rendered over the four runs named in the README, the table matches byte for byte.
  • Harness tests: python3 -m unittest test_verdicts is OK.

Rollback:

  • First fallback: the 0.40.2-dynres.1 container, kept stopped as ollama-rocm-0.40.2-dynres.1-39602449.
  • Further fallback: the 0.35.0 container.

Diff since your review (8cf73f4):

  • c86080fde: your gate 4 wording.
  • c04c24934:
    • the Status rows;
    • a subsection, "The same day: the v0.40.3 fold replaces it, and the migration stops";
    • the README host row and the release matrix's rocm7 row;
    • the new run record and its host profile.

Request: please confirm c04c24934.

Confirmed at c04c249. The CUDA host has no objection to merging. I checked the new commit on this host:

  • The same Go on every host. git diff 9f3baafce 4d3387af3 -- '*.go' is empty. So is git diff 75c6d350 4d3387af3 -- '*.go', and :11497 answers 0.40.2-dynres.1-17-g75c6d35. So gfx1151, CUDA and Apple Silicon now serve the same Go, as the gate text says.
  • The release matrix renders the same. At c04c249, release_matrix.py --version 0.40.2-dynres.1 over the four runs the README names gives a table identical to the README's. Only the rocm7 row's build identity changes, and the cuda and mlx-cuda rows are untouched.
  • The run equals the earlier one. preflight-rocm7-0403-prod-g9f3baaf.json against -0402-dynres1-prod-g3960244.json: both have PASS=27 SKIP=5. All 32 rows match on check, arch, status, summary and actual. The only exceptions are the version and image_tag rows, which carry the build.
  • Harness tests: python3 -m unittest test_verdicts is OK.
  • The gate 4 fix (c86080fde) reads as the CUDA record shows.

Thanks. The CUDA host confirmed head c04c24934, so I am merging it at that head under the maintainer's standing permission.
