feat(trace): report depth exhaustion and walk transformation links by direction - #3713
S1, records trace.CanonicalEventStore.trace_walk returns a TraceWalk with the existing truncated flag (result cap, canonical_persistence: trace_forward/trace_backward unbounded result size + missing composite index #1282) and a new depth_exhausted flag, set when a lot was reached at max_depth and never expanded. trace_forward / trace_backward keep their (links, truncated) contract by delegating. GET /api/v1/records/trace/forward|backward/{tlc} responses gain depth_exhausted and max_depth, so a depth-capped trace no longer reads as complete.
S2, export lineage._expand_tlcs_via_transformation_links and its batch twin now carry direction as a column inside the single recursive branch: forward rows only join input_tlc, backward rows only output_tlc. both (the default used by /export, /export/all, /export/verify) is the union of a pure forward and a pure backward walk from the seed, which is what 21 CFR 1.1350(c) asks for; the old undirected walk could step back to a parent and forward again, pulling in sibling lots that never touched the seed. New _expand_tlcs_detailed returns a TlcExpansion with depth_exhausted and per-lot reach data; the list-returning functions wrap it.
GET /api/v1/fda/trace/{tlc} accepts direction=forward|backward|both, returns direction and depth_exhausted, labels each node by the walk that reached it (a lot two hops downstream was labelled upstream before because only seed-adjacent edges were checked), and adds a per-node depth.
Stories S1 and S2 from docs/product/FSMA_204_READINESS_GAP_ANALYSIS_2026-10-28.md (#3701, section 9). Both close a silent-truncation path the external readiness PRD excludes. Related Linear: SEL-412 (F7 trace view).
Note on reproducibility: export and /export/verify share the same walk, so they stay consistent with each other. A bundle generated before this change will not reproduce byte-for-byte if sibling lots were present in its graph. No customer bundles exist (pre-production).

tests/shared/test_canonical_trace_cap_1282.py: depth-exhausted cases (chain outruns depth, leaf exactly at the limit, backward walk, cap and depth flags independent, invalid direction, tuple wrappers delegate).
tests/shared/test_cte_persistence_hardening_v2.py: direction seeds and joins in the recursive CTE, batch twin directed, depth-exhausted from result rows, single-column rows tolerated, missing-table fallback returns a detailed result.
tests/shared/test_cte_traversal_live.py: live PostgreSQL case with A→B, A→S, S→T: both from B is {A, B, C}, never S; forward from B never steps back to A; depth=1 from A raises depth_exhausted; batch twin honours direction.
services/ingestion/tests/test_canonical_router_1342.py: response carries depth_exhausted and max_depth; stub speaks trace_walk.
services/ingestion/tests/test_fda_export_queries_1342.py: roles follow walk direction, per-node depth, flags surfaced.
services/ingestion/tests/test_fda_trace_route_direction.py (new): route-level tests for direction pass-through, default both, 422 on an invalid value.
Medium Risk
Changes core FSMA trace/export graph semantics and API response shapes; misread traces could affect regulatory exports, though defaults preserve both walks and extensive tests cover direction and depth flags.
Overview Trace and export lineage now treat transformation-link walks as directed (forward, backward, or union both) instead of undirected hops, so sibling lots that never touch the seed are excluded from graphs and export expansion. Walks also surface depth_exhausted separately from the existing truncated result cap, so depth-limited responses are not mistaken for complete traces.
Records API (/api/v1/records/trace/forward|backward/{tlc}) adds depth_exhausted and max_depth on TraceResponse, backed by shared trace_walk / _trace_response in CanonicalEventStore.
FDA trace API (GET /api/v1/fda/trace/{tlc}) adds optional direction, returns direction, depth_exhausted, per-node depth, and fixes node roles and edges so edges only connect lots in the returned node set. Persistence uses _expand_tlcs_detailed / TlcExpansion with per-direction depth-limit detection in the recursive CTE.
Docs and lint: API reference and Trust Center copy updates; copy-lint baseline trimmed where violations were cleared.

… direction
Stories S1 and S2 of docs/product/FSMA_204_READINESS_GAP_ANALYSIS_2026-10-28
(PR #3701). Both close a silent-truncation path the external readiness PRD
excludes: a trace that stopped at its depth limit read as complete, and the
FDA export lineage walk followed transformation links in either direction,
so a backward step to a parent lot followed by a forward step pulled in
sibling lots that never touched the seed.
S1, records trace (`/api/v1/records/trace/forward|backward/{tlc}`):
- CanonicalEventStore.trace_walk returns a TraceWalk with `truncated`
(result cap, #1282) and a new `depth_exhausted` flag, set when a lot was
reached at max_depth and never expanded. Conservative, no extra query.
- trace_forward / trace_backward keep the (links, truncated) contract by
delegating to trace_walk.
- TraceResponse gains `depth_exhausted` and `max_depth`.
S2, export lineage (`_expand_tlcs_via_transformation_links`, batch twin,
`/api/v1/fda/trace/{tlc}`):
- Direction travels as a column in the single recursive branch: forward
rows only join input_tlc, backward rows only output_tlc. `both` is now
the union of a pure forward and a pure backward walk (21 CFR 1.1350(c)),
not an undirected walk, so sibling lots are excluded.
- New `_expand_tlcs_detailed` returns TlcExpansion with `depth_exhausted`
and per-lot reach data; the list-returning functions wrap it.
- fetch_trace_graph_data labels nodes by the walk that reached them (a lot
two hops downstream was labelled upstream before), adds per-node depth,
and returns `direction` and `depth_exhausted`. The route accepts
`direction=forward|backward|both` (default both).
Export and /export/verify share the same walk, so they stay consistent.
Bundles produced before this change will not reproduce byte-for-byte when
sibling lots were present; no customer bundles exist (pre-production).
Tests: depth flags on the writer walk, router response fields, direction
SQL shape on the recursive CTE, a live PostgreSQL sibling-exclusion case,
and a new route test for /api/v1/fda/trace. Verified locally against a
scratch PostgreSQL 16 at alembic head plus the tenant-scope query gate.

Canonical and transformation-link traversal now supports forward, backward, or bidirectional traversal. It reports depth-limit exhaustion separately from result-cap truncation. The FDA trace API passes the requested direction to TLC expansion and returns direction, depth status, and node reach details. Tests cover traversal, API validation, graph edges, and response fields. The API documentation and trust-page wording are updated, and the copy-lint baseline changes.
The directed trace graph no longer includes edges to excluded lots. No concrete merge-blocking issue remains after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 4cecd
Trace results gain clearer completeness reporting and narrower directional lineage selection. The inspected paths preserve tenant authorization and tenant-filtered database access. No introduced security vulnerability was established, but deployment enforcement and broader dependency coverage remain only partially verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected exposure is tenant traceability data returned through authorized trace requests. Callers control the seed lot and bounded depth, plus direction on FDA trace; the inspected changes do not grant additional tenant authority. Canonical routes allow depth up to 20 and FDA trace up to 10.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Caller-controlled direction is validated and mapped to fixed SQL seed fragments. Tenant and lot values remain bound parameters, and FDA graph event and edge reads retain tenant predicates.
observed — Repository migrations declare FORCE RLS protection and a tenant-context policy for transformation links. This supports the intended database isolation boundary but does not verify that a deployed database has applied those declarations.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Canonical traversal preserves its visited-lot cycle guard and result cap. Detailed CTE expansion preserves rollback-and-reraise handling for non-missing-table programming or operational errors, rather than converting those failures into successful seed-only results. The missing-table seed-only fallback is pre-existing behavior.

PR Gate (run 41013365942, carries CI Status Gate and PR Gate: Backend) is still queued and should resolve on its own now that both CI runs it waits on are green.
Why 6fa0c3a was red. Only Passwordless Auth E2E (Chromium) failed: authenticated-core-journeys.spec.ts hit Rate limit exceeded: 30 per 1 minute creating products (run 40817752110). The limit came in with #3745 on main; main failed the same job at this PR's base 8c977b9 (run 40805970810) and #3752 (fb4e5df) fixed the spec to retry on 429. The merge carries that fix. Nothing in this PR touches the product catalog or the E2E suite.
Vercel Preview Built on 4cecde5 (run 41013366080): not this PR's, re-run spent. The guard polls Vercel for a preview of the head commit and found none in 25 minutes, twice (first attempt and the one re-run at 06:46 UTC). The commit carries no Vercel status at all, whereas 6fa0c3a got "Deployment has completed", and the same guard passed on #3717's heads in the same window. The job never evaluates this PR's code. It is not a required context (the Head SHA Check Guard lists only CI Status Gate and PR Gate: Backend). Clearing it needs a redeploy of this commit on the Vercel side or the next push of this branch; I will not re-run it again. I could not read Vercel's deployment list from this session (API returns 403 for this connector).
Review threads: all addressed and resolved (Codex, Cursor) as of ac544bb. CodeRabbit's re-review of 4cecde5: no actionable comments, merge risk "Minimal", security architecture risk "Low"; one Trivial unverified suggestion (drop the test-fake fallbacks in _expand_tlcs_detailed row parsing) that I will carry into the next code push if one is needed before merge. …gate
Ported from #3736. The Semgrep OWASP hard gate on main has flagged
scripts/create_test_api_key.py:140 (insecure-file-permissions) since
#3625 and the main merge carried the finding into this branch. The
directory mode is unchanged (owner read, write and execute only; the
key file itself stays 0600). This no-ops once main carries the fix.

The edge query still returns sibling and unwalked links, so the response names lots that the directed walk excluded.
The direction change limits nodes to the lots that the directed walk reached. The edge query is unchanged. It selects every link where either endpoint is in linked_tlcs.
Example from the live test graph (A → B, B → C, A → S, S → T):
A trace from B with direction=both returns nodes {A, B, C}.
A is in that set, so the query also returns the edge A → S.
S appears as an edge endpoint but is not a node.
With direction=forward from B, the edge A → B is returned. A is not a node.
Consequences:
The response still names the sibling lot S. This is the case that 21 CFR 1.1350(c) scoping is meant to exclude.
edge_count and edges contain endpoints that have no entry in nodes. A graph renderer can break on these dangling references.
The tests do not catch this. The unit tests use _EmptySession, which returns no edge rows. The live test checks only tlcs.
Restrict edges to links whose two endpoints are both returned nodes. depth_exhausted already reports that the graph may continue past the depth limit.
🐛 Proposed fix
- WHERE tenant_id = :tid- AND (input_tlc = ANY(:tlcs) OR output_tlc = ANY(:tlcs))+ WHERE tenant_id = :tid+ AND input_tlc = ANY(:tlcs)+ AND output_tlc = ANY(:tlcs)
Add a test that returns link rows from the fake session for a sibling graph. It must assert that every edges[*].input_tlc and edges[*].output_tlc appears in nodes.

…inside the returned lots
Two review findings on the S2 walk.
depth_exhausted collapsed both walks to MIN(depth) per lot before
checking the limit, so a lot the backward walk found early hid a forward
frontier: with S -> A -> X -> S and X -> Y, a both-direction trace from S
at depth 2 omits Y (X sits at depth 2 forward, never expanded) yet read
depth_exhausted=false because X is at depth 1 backward. The CTE's final
select now takes MIN(depth) per (lot, direction) first and reports
whether any walk only reached a lot at the limit; the display depth is
still the shallowest reach. Rows without the new column fall back to
the collapsed depth.
fetch_trace_graph_data selected every link touching any returned lot,
so a sibling branch (A -> S when tracing B in A -> B, A -> S) and
opposite-direction neighbours leaked into edges and named lots absent
from nodes. Both ends must now be returned lots, in SQL and again on
the rows for persistence stubs.
Tests: unit cases for the per-direction limit (fake rows carrying the
fifth column, SQL shape) and for edge restriction; a live PostgreSQL
case for the cycle graph at depths 2, 3 and 4. All three failed before
the change. Tenant-scope query gate passes.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Remove the test-fake fallbacks from the production row parsing.
The SQL always returns five columns. The code still defaults missing columns: via_forward and via_backward become False, and depth_exhausted falls back to deepest >= max_depth. These defaults exist only so older test fakes keep working, and test_single_column_rows_still_work locks them in.
The defaults add a second, less accurate definition of depth_exhausted. The fallback uses the collapsed depth. The docstring and the PR both identify that as the source of the earlier bug. If a real query ever returns a different shape, the code silently reports every lot as reached by neither walk, with no error.
Update the fakes to return all five columns. Then read row[0] to row[4] directly, so a shape mismatch fails loudly.
♻️ Proposed simplification
- has_limit_column = False
for row in rows:
- tlc = row[0]- row_depth = int(row[1]) if len(row) > 1 and row[1] is not None else 0- via_forward = bool(row[2]) if len(row) > 2 and row[2] is not None else False- via_backward = bool(row[3]) if len(row) > 3 and row[3] is not None else False- if len(row) > 4 and row[4] is not None:- has_limit_column = True- at_limit_any = at_limit_any or bool(row[4])+ tlc, row_depth, via_forward, via_backward, at_limit = row[:5]+ row_depth = int(row_depth)+ at_limit_any = at_limit_any or bool(at_limit)
Also change line 294 to depth_exhausted=at_limit_any,, and drop the now-unused deepest variable.

main's #3713 already reworded the trust page Preview row and refreshed the copy

the security workflow test.
