Remove made-up sample files from frontend/public/samples - #3561
Ingest page EPCIS tab: "Download a sample EPCIS file" link (/samples/sample_epcis_2.0.json); test now asserts the link is gone and uses a minimal inline EPCIS body instead of importing the deleted file
qa/fsma-lite-check.js, qa/full-flow.js, qa/export-validate.js: they only validated the synthetic samples. Their steps are removed from qa-pipeline.yml, qa/decision.js, qa/summary.js, qa/README.md. Job names (Fast Gate, System Simulation, Deploy Decision) are unchanged, so the required checks still report.
.secrets.baseline entries for the removed files
docs/engineering/TRACEABILITY_FILE_INTAKE.md sentence about the sample link
Kept
sample_recall_drill.csv: served by /proof/recall-drill (RECALL_CSV_URL) and returned by services/ingestion/app/proof_recall_router.py (OUTPUT_CSV_URL). No file in samples/ is used by the drill simulator.
.gitignore / PRODUCT_DESCRIPTION
No zips remain in samples/, so !frontend/public/samples/*.zip is dropped and the comment now covers only proof bundles (!frontend/public/proof/*.zip stays).
docs/PRODUCT_DESCRIPTION.md: "Public synthetic artifacts, a browser verifier, ..." becomes "A browser verifier, ...".
Not in this PR
frontend/public/proof/{fsma-204-sample.csv,epcis-sample.jsonld,audit-bundle.zip,audit-bundle-tampered.zip} are still on main, but #3554 removes them along with the test skips and script changes they need. I left them to #3554 so this PR doesn't break the proof-verify tests.
Testing
node qa/decision.js, qa/bad-data.js and qa/frontend-security-scan.js pass locally; the workflow YAML parses; pre-commit hooks (detect-secrets, check-yaml) pass.
No frontend node_modules in this worktree, so vitest and tsc weren't run locally. CI (Node 22) covers them.
No remaining references to the removed files outside historical docs/qa and docs/archive snapshots.
Note
Medium Risk
Removes CI gates that enforced Merkle/sample cross-format consistency, so regressions in those areas won't block merge; ingest UX loses downloadable EPCIS samples but core recall drill fixtures remain.
Overview
Removes synthetic public sample artifacts under frontend/public/samples/ (EPCIS JSON, FDA CSV, chain verification, manifest, export zip, sandbox CSV) and stops treating them as product fixtures.
The ingest EPCIS tab no longer offers a sample download; ingest EPCIS tests use minimal inline document shapes and assert validation/ingest failure paths aligned with backend error semantics instead of importing deleted files.
QA pipeline slim-down: deletes qa/fsma-lite-check.js, qa/full-flow.js, and qa/export-validate.js (they only validated those samples) and drops their steps from qa-pipeline.yml, qa/summary.js, qa/decision.js, and qa/README.md. Fast Gate still runs CTE-count copy and frontend security scan; system-sim keeps bad-data.js only.
Housekeeping: .gitignore no longer whitelists samples/*.zip; .secrets.baseline drops baselines for removed files; docs drop references to public synthetic artifacts and sample EPCIS links. sample_recall_drill.csv and proof bundles under frontend/public/proof/ are unchanged in this PR.
Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 82323b8. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
Keep sample_recall_drill.csv (served by /proof/recall-drill and the
ingestion proof_recall_router). Remove the other synthetic samples, the
ingest-page link to the sample EPCIS file, the QA scripts that only
validated those samples, their .secrets.baseline entries, the orphaned
samples zip .gitignore rule, and the 'synthetic artifacts' claim in
PRODUCT_DESCRIPTION.

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Rejected batch uploads do not show users which events failed, the ingestion tests no longer protect successful uploads, and QA guidance overstates the checks that run. Address these gaps before merging.

Formal review at 120f8b3. The branch is up to date with main.
Blocking: ingest-epcis.test.tsx adds invented EPCIS events. The new inline epcisDocument has two hand-written ObjectEvents (shipping and receiving), with made-up eventTime values (2026-01-01 and 2026-01-02) and the GS1 context. They aren't recorded data. They first appear in this commit, and the file's only earlier history is #3405, which imported the deleted synthetic sample. This breaks the rules against GS1 example documents in tests and against mocked values with invented data. The tests only check that the events are passed through and counted, so they don't need realistic content. Use data-free placeholders instead, for example Array.from({ length: 2 }, () => ({})) inside a bare { epcisBody: { eventList } }, drop the GS1 @context, and keep the identity and count assertions.
Checked and fine:
Required checks: the qa-pipeline.yml job IDs and names are unchanged (Fast Gate (unit + FSMA + tenant), System Simulation (flow + bad data + export), AI Content Analysis, Deploy Decision). Only steps were removed. Each job still has steps (Fast Gate keeps the frontend security scan, System Simulation keeps bad-data.js), and decision still needs [fast-gate, system-sim]. No required check is left without a job behind it.
References: outside docs/qa and docs/archive, nothing points to the removed samples or the three removed QA scripts. The ingest link, the TRACEABILITY_FILE_INTAKE sentence and the .gitignore samples/*.zip rule are gone, and sample_recall_drill.csv is kept.
The decision.js and summary.js lists and the PRODUCT_DESCRIPTION:17 wording are consistent.
Follow-up, not blocking: the "7 CTEs, never 6" copy check. Deleting fsma-lite-check.js also removes section 7. That section was a data-free check that frontend/src/app/fsma-204/page.tsx contains "7 Critical Tracking Events" and doesn't contain "6 Critical Tracking Events". The page is currently correct (2 matches, no "6" form anywhere in frontend/src), so nothing regresses now. I recommend bringing it back as a small standalone copy-check script in Fast Gate in a follow-up PR.
Delta from 120f8b3: one commit (dd871b5) touching only frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis.test.tsx (+2/-12). It replaces the invented two-event GS1 document with { epcisBody: { eventList: Array.from({ length: 2 }, () => ({})) } }. The GS1 @context and the made-up event times are gone. Nothing else changed, so my earlier checks still hold: required job names are unchanged, nothing references the removed samples, and sample_recall_drill.csv is kept.
Assertions still work: the batch test still checks eventList.length > 1, ingestEpcisBatch called once with events: eventList, no single, XML or validate calls, and the "N of N events accepted; 0 rejected." text. Run locally, ingest-epcis.test.tsx passes 10 of 10.
Pre-existing follow-up (not part of this diff, not blocking): the SINGLE_EVENT fixture from main (dated 2026-03-01, also spread into a two-event batch case) is still fake data. Replace it with a data-free placeholder in a follow-up.
Earlier follow-up still open: bring back the "7 CTEs, never 6" copy check as a standalone data-free script.
CI was mostly pending at review time (1 pass, 20 pending, 3 skipping, none failing).

Add representative EPCIS traceability fields to the fixture.
The fixture omits a TLC and source/reference metadata. Add EPCIS-native values for these fields. The existing deep-equality toHaveBeenCalledWith assertion will then detect dropped or altered values; separate assertions are not required.

frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis.test.tsx:7,44,46-51: the invented EPCIS events are gone. The document is Array.from({length: 2}, () => ({})), SINGLE_EVENT is {}, and the XML has an empty <EventList />. No eventTime, bizStep, or @context values remain. The batch test derives its counts from eventList.length (:86-87,108).
Main merge resolution in .github/workflows/qa-pipeline.yml:46-47: main's node qa/fsma-cte-count-check.js step is kept. The fsma-lite-check, full-flow, and export-validate steps are dropped.
qa/README.md: only the fsma-cte-count-check row remains. qa/summary.js and qa/decision.js drop the deleted scripts too.
git grep finds no reference to a deleted script or sample file in workflows, qa/*.js, or frontend/src.
Findings (blocking under the real-data rule: no made-up IDs or values)
frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis.test.tsx:119-120,205,135,217: the backend error detail 'Missing bizLocation' and status_code: 400 are invented. The string is not produced anywhere in services/ingestion; git grep "Missing bizLocation" outside tests is empty. Derive the detail from a shared constant or an opaque generated value (e.g. const detail = String(Symbol('detail').description) or crypto.randomUUID()), and assert the rendered Event ${index + 1}: ${detail} from that value.
frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis.test.tsx:116-118,134,216 hardcodes total: 2, created: 1, failed: 1 and '1 of 2 events …'. Derive them from events.length and the failing index, as the batch test at :86-108 already does. The same applies to total: 1, created: 1 at :158-159, which should come from the single XML request.
Nits (non-blocking)
docs/archive/DEPLOY_CHECKLIST_SECURITY_HARDENING.md:273-279 still shows node qa/fsma-lite-check.js, full-flow.js and export-validate.js. The file is archived, but a one-line "removed in #3561" note would avoid confusion.
qa/baseline-summary.json:59 and qa/qa-summary.json:59 still have a full-flow key, which is a stale generated artifact.
CI: most checks are pending (4 pass, 28 pending). Head SHA Check Guard and PR Blocker Checklist show fail; on #3572 and #3577 the same checks failed in about 1s with no steps.
The supplied workflow runs qa/bad-data.js in system-sim. It no longer runs the removed full-flow or export-validation checks. Line 27 still claims both checks run. Update the description so operators do not mistake the job name for FDA export validation.

(3) The archive doc lines are gone. docs/archive/DEPLOY_CHECKLIST_SECURITY_HARDENING.md:270-280 no longer lists fsma-lite-check, full-flow or export-validate.
(1) The status and shape match production. services/ingestion/app/epcis/persistence.py:454 and :588 raise HTTPException(status_code=400, detail={"errors": errors}) from _validate_epcis. "Unsupported EPCIS event type" is a real message: validation.py:267 emits it whenever type is missing or unknown.
Findings
frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis.test.tsx:50,126,225: the error list is cherry-picked. For the {} placeholder, _validate_epcis (validation.py:243-271) returns six errors, in this order:
"Missing required EPCIS field 'type'"
the same for 'eventTime', 'action' and 'bizStep'
"Unsupported EPCIS event type"
"Missing traceability lot code (...)"
The mocks use errors: [BACKEND_EVENT_ERROR], only the 5th message. The page joins the list (ingest/page.tsx:290), so the asserted "Event N: Unsupported EPCIS event type" string is not what the backend would produce for this input. Use the full ordered list for {}, or assert against errors.join(': ') of that list.
frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis.test.tsx:123-124: the batch outcome is impossible for its input. events holds two identical {} placeholders, and both fail the same validation, yet the mock reports created = events.length - 1 (one accepted). The counts are written as derivations, but the split is invented. Make every event fail (created = 0, failed = events.length, one error per index). Or, if the test only checks UI passthrough of a partial response, say so explicitly and don't claim it as real backend output (:46-49).
frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis.test.tsx:173-178 (XML): xmlTotal = [EPCIS_XML].length is a literal 1 dressed up as derived. The file carries an empty <EventList />, so the honest parsed count is 0, and the comment admits the mock "reports one event created so the success path renders". Use total: 0, created: 0, and assert whatever the page renders for an empty document, or that the response passes through unchanged. Alternatively, put one real-shaped event in the XML.
frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis.test.tsx:224 (validate-only batch): the same problem as finding 2. The two identical {} events get valid: true and then valid: false. The first is impossible for {}.
OK: singleTotal and validTotal ([SINGLE_EVENT].length) count a real one-element input. failedIndex and the "Event N" label are derived.
CI: 2 pass, 19 pending, 1 fail (Head SHA Check Guard). This is the same startup failure, with no steps run, seen on the other open PRs.
frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis.test.tsx:51-56: BACKEND_EVENT_ERRORS exactly matches what _validate_epcis({}) returns (services/ingestion/app/epcis/validation.py:243-271). The order is the four required fields (type, eventTime, action, bizStep; action is included because {} is not a TransformationEvent), then "Unsupported EPCIS event type", then "Missing traceability lot code (fsma:traceabilityLotCode or cbvmda:lotNumber)". Each string matches character for character.
:162-166: the single-event 400 has the real shape. POST /events raises HTTPException(400, detail={"errors": errors}) (persistence.py:454/:588). The rejected Error carries response.status 400 and data.detail.errors, which epcis-upload.ts:118-121 reads.
:214,236: validate-only marks every event invalid, which is correct. /validate (router.py:319-339) returns {valid: false, errors: _validate_epcis(event), normalized_cte: null} for {}.
Findings
frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis.test.tsx:186-194 (XML): the 0/0 passthrough is not what the backend does. POST /events/xml calls _parse_epcis_xml and, when no events come back, raises HTTPException(status_code=422, detail="No EPCIS events found in XML document") (router.py:389-394). An empty <EventList /> never yields a 201 response with total: 0. Mock a rejection with response: {status: 422, data: {detail: 'No EPCIS events found in XML document'}} and assert the "Ingestion Failed" state with that message.
frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis.test.tsx:62-72,119,143: rejectedBatchResponse doesn't match the real batch shape or status.
Partial mode (router.py:197-223): results holds only successfully processed events, and a failure is {index, detail} with no status_code. When every event fails, the route returns HTTP 400 (router.py:221-222), so the client call rejects; the mock resolves instead. The real all-invalid partial body is {total: n, created: 0, failed: n, results: [], errors: [{index, detail: {errors: [...]}}...], mode: 'partial'}, carried on a 400 rejection.
Atomic is the default when _batch_transactional() (router.py:165-166), and the client sends no mode. For {} events it raises 400 with detail={error: 'batch_validation_failed', mode: 'atomic', message, errors: [{index, status_code: 400, detail: {errors: [...]}}]} (persistence.py:1027-1046).
Pick the mode the deployment uses (or test both). Use mockRejectedValue with the matching response.status/data and assert what the page renders for that rejection.
Note: dropping success-path coverage is an accepted trade-off under the real-data rule and is not a finding.
CI: 2 pass, 20 pending. Head SHA Check Guard and PR Blocker Checklist show fail; on the other open PRs these were the same startup failure, which I didn't recheck for this run.

Success-path assertions were removed
Medium Severity
Batch, single-event, XML, and validate-only cases now only assert total rejection. Coverage of EPCIS processed, EPCIS partially accepted, All events valid, and notifyDashboardRefresh after accepted events is gone. A regression on those branches would no longer fail this file.

Retain successful EPCIS ingestion and validation tests.
These mocks replace the successful and mixed outcomes with rejection or an empty XML event list. The suite can now pass without checking that a valid event is accepted, displayed, or counted correctly. Keep the invalid-event tests, and restore representative successful and mixed-outcome cases.
As per path instructions, “Flag tests that were weakened, skipped, or loosened (broader asserts, removed tenant checks, xfail) to make a change pass.”

XML (frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis.test.tsx:217-235): the mock rejects with 422 and {detail: 'No EPCIS events found in XML document'}, which matches router.py:389-394 exactly. epcisErrorMessage returns a string detail as-is (epcis-upload.ts:45-46,116-121), so the assertions on "Ingestion Failed" and the detail text are what the page renders (page.tsx:310-311,843).
Atomic batch (:72-90,151,165-170): the 400 detail is {error: 'batch_validation_failed', mode: 'atomic', message, errors: [{index, status_code, detail: {errors}}]}, which matches persistence.py:1027-1046. ATOMIC_BATCH_MESSAGE is character-identical to the concatenated Python string. Rendering: detailToMessage pushes detail.message. The nested errors items are records without msg/message, so they yield null and are dropped. The page therefore shows only the message, and the queryByText(/^Event \d+:/) negative assertion is correct.
Partial batch (:92-104,174-192): the 400 body is {total: n, created: 0, failed: n, results: [], errors: [{index, detail: {errors}}], mode: 'partial'}. That matches router.py:197-223, where only successes go into results, failures are {index, detail} without status_code, and all-failed returns 400 with no detail wrapper. detail is undefined, so the page falls back to error.message. The asserted rejection.message ("Request failed with status code 400") is axios's own message, and the ingestion client has no interceptor that rewrites it (api-client.ts:354).
Single event: the 400 {detail: {errors: BACKEND_EVENT_ERRORS}} still matches persistence.py:454/588 and renders the joined list.
No invented values remain. Every string and status (400, 422, the error and message texts, _validate_epcis({}) output) traces to backend source, and every count derives from the input lists.
Notes (non-blocking)
Known app gap, tracked separately: the page drops per-event errors for atomic and partial batch rejections. The tests pin the current behavior with the negative Event N: assertions, which will need flipping when the follow-up lands.
Success-path coverage is gone, an accepted trade-off under the real-data rule.
CI: 2 pass, 19 pending. Head SHA Check Guard and PR Blocker Checklist show fail and look like the same startup failure as on the other open PRs; I didn't recheck this run. Merge needs the frontend gates green.

Show per-event errors for rejected EPCIS batch uploads.
The page drops the indexed validation errors that the batch endpoint returns. For a partial batch where every event fails, epcisErrorMessage reads only response.data.detail. The backend puts the per-event errors array at the top level of the body, so the page shows only the generic request-status text. For an atomic rejection, detailToMessage reads only msg or message on each nested item. The per-event entries carry index and detail instead, so they are dropped and the user sees only the batch-level message. The same file already formats indexed errors as Event N: … for mixed-result responses through resultItemMessage. Apply that handling to the rejection paths too.

Review comment at @frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis.test.tsx at line
169:
Update epcisErrorMessage and detailToMessage so rejection responses include
top-level indexed errors and format entries containing index and detail through
resultItemMessage. Update the rejection test assertions to expect the resulting
Event N: messages and combined batch text instead of asserting those messages
are absent.

Resolve conflicts with #3543, #3557, #3561, #3572 and #3580:
- keep /case-studies, /proof and /proof/transformation hidden (notFound) and drop case-studies OG image
- CTE help copy keeps 'Upload your {name} data to RegEngine' with the /ingest link; closing CTA uses main's sandboxCta() blurb (sandbox retired), test updated to match
- keep EPCIS (Preview) labels; take main's empty states for trust scheduled exports and walkthrough package details
- drop both proof/samples zip exceptions from .gitignore (files removed)
- routes.json: main's version plus /proof and /proof/transformation moved to expectRedirectOr404

- Resolve conflicts with #3543/#3561/#3566/#3572: take main's 'No data yet' case-studies page, main's walkthrough package details (EPCIS kept as Preview), main's EPCIS rejection tests, drop ARCHIVE_EXPORT_JOBS
- InflowLabClient stays deleted (Inflow Lab retired by this PR)
- Delete frontend/src/app/proof/recall-drill/page.tsx, its page test and frontend/public/samples/sample_recall_drill.csv (recall drill simulation removed per C.Lee, Oct 23)
- routes.json: /proof/recall-drill moves to expectRedirectOr404 (same edit as #3551)
- Drill simulator (Load Sample Data, generateSampleCSV) untouched; #3549 not merged so no baseline.json change

Medium Risk
Removes CI gates that enforced Merkle/sample cross-format consistency, so regressions in those areas won't block merge; ingest UX loses downloadable EPCIS samples but core recall drill fixtures remain.
Overview
Removes synthetic public sample artifacts under
frontend/public/samples/(EPCIS JSON, FDA CSV, chain verification, manifest, export zip, sandbox CSV) and stops treating them as product fixtures. The ingest EPCIS tab no longer offers a sample download; ingest EPCIS tests use minimal inline document shapes and assert validation/ingest failure paths aligned with backend error semantics instead of importing deleted files.
