fix(ingest): list per-event errors for rejected EPCIS batches - #3578
fix(ingest): list per-event errors for rejected EPCIS batches
Commit Message Check fails only on 120f8b3 ("Remove made-up sample files from frontend/public/samples"), which is not a Conventional Commit. Rewriting it would need a rebase or force push, which we do not do, so squash merge with the title above.
Summary
An all-failed EPCIS batch is a 400 rejection, and the /ingest page showed only a heading message with no per-event errors. This lists Event N: <errors joined> lines under the existing message for both backend shapes:
Atomic (default via _batch_transactional()): detail {error:'batch_validation_failed', mode:'atomic', message, errors:[{index, status_code, detail:{errors}}]} from _ingest_batch_events_db_atomic (persistence.py).
Partial: router.py returns the payload with status 400 and no detail wrapper: {total, created:0, failed, results:[], errors:[{index, detail}], mode:'partial'}.
Adds epcisErrorEventMessages in frontend/src/lib/epcis-upload.ts. The existing heading message (epcisErrorMessage) is unchanged.
Tests
New frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis-batch-errors.test.tsx: data-free {} events, shapes copied from the backend source, counts derived from the input length. It covers atomic, partial, and a failure without per-event errors.
vitest (both ingest-epcis files plus src/lib): 41/41. eslint is clean. tsc reports only the existing instrumentation.ts(26,5) error.
This branch merges origin/hermes/remove-made-up-samples (#3561 at 82323b8). #3561's ingest-epcis.test.tsx assertions for the atomic and partial rejections are flipped here to expect one Event N: line per event. The negative case in ingest-epcis-batch-errors.test.tsx now uses the real single-event 400 {detail:{errors}} and asserts the message renders once with no Event N: lines.
Note
Low Risk
Frontend-only ingest error display and submit-state clearing; no API or persistence behavior changes.
Overview
Rejected EPCIS batch uploads on /ingest now show Event N: … lines under the existing failure heading for both backend shapes (atomic detail.errors and partial-mode bodies without a detail wrapper), via new epcisErrorEventMessages in epcis-upload.ts and epcisErrorEvents state on the ingest page. Single-event failures still show one combined message with no Event N: prefix.
Submit handling clears prior results/errors before attempting to save a changed API key, so a failed key write no longer leaves stale batch error lines. URL tab API-key save failures use dedicated urlError (with Ingestion Failed UI) instead of job status error; tests cover URL, EPCIS clear-on-retry, and the updated batch expectations.

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The ingestion page now displays indexed event errors for failed EPCIS submissions and handles URL API-key save failures in the URL error state. It clears prior errors during file selection, submission preparation, and reset. Tests cover atomic and partial batch failures, single-event failures, and API-key save failures.
A failed key save can hide a running ingestion job from the page. Preserve its status until the save succeeds; the remaining risk is narrow and mergeable with owner awareness.

frontend/src/lib/epcis-upload.ts:114-133epcisErrorEventMessages handles both 400 shapes:
Atomic: it reads detail.errors[{index, status_code, detail}], which matches persistence.py:1027-1046.
Partial: it reads the body's top-level errors[{index, detail}] with no detail wrapper, which matches router.py:197-223.
For both, resultItemMessage produces Event N: <joined errors>.
It degrades safely:
Non-Error input, a non-record body, or missing errors returns [].
A 422 string detail returns [], because the fallback to data finds no errors.
The single-event 400 {detail:{errors:[strings]}} returns [], because the entries aren't records with index. That means no duplicate lines under the joined message.
epcisErrorMessage is unchanged (:135+).
page.tsx:316,860-862: per-event lines are reset in all four places (:177,241,916, plus each submit via the reset helper) and render only on the epcis tab.
In the test file, BACKEND_EVENT_ERRORS, ATOMIC_MESSAGE, both rejection shapes and the counts (derived from EVENTS.length) match the backend source. The {} events are acceptable placeholders.
Findings
FAIL, real-data rule: frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis-batch-errors.test.tsx:121-126 mocks the batch endpoint rejecting with 422 {detail:'No EPCIS events found in XML document'}. Only the XML route raises that (router.py:389-394); /events/batch never returns it. Fix one of two ways:
Drive the XML upload path (ingestEpcisXml with an empty-EventList document).
Use the real single-event 400 {detail:{errors: BACKEND_EVENT_ERRORS}} via ingestEpcisEvent. This also proves the joined message isn't duplicated as Event N: lines.
Merge interaction with #3561 (open at 82323b8): frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis.test.tsx on #3561 asserts queryByText(/^Event \d+:/) is absent for the atomic (:169) and partial (:191) rejections. Once both PRs land, those assertions fail.
Whichever PR merges second must flip them to expect the Event N: lines, or drop them in favor of this file.
Preferably, rebase #3578 on #3561 and update those two assertions here.
Not run: vitest. This review worktree has no frontend/node_modules, and I didn't install anything.
frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis-batch-errors.test.tsx:127-142: the invented batch-422 case is replaced by the real single-event 400 {detail:{errors: BACKEND_EVENT_ERRORS}}, which matches persistence.py:454/588.
It uploads EVENTS[0] ({}) through the single-event path.
It asserts that getAllByText(JOINED) has length 1, that there are 0 /^Event \d+:/ lines, and that ingestEpcisBatch is not called.
That matches epcisErrorEventMessages: string entries carry no index, so it returns [].
Merge 6cb493d (626393c + 82323b8) is a clean merge: git merge-tree --write-tree 626393cf 82323b8f gives a9a85158, identical to the 6cb493d tree. So everything #3561 brings in is byte-identical to 82323b8, the version I already passed.
c48f3e9 changes only ingest-epcis.test.tsx (:165-170, :187-193), plus the new test case above. The atomic and partial queryByText(/^Event \d+:/) absence checks are flipped to expectEveryEventRejected(n) (Event i: <joined backend errors>, :106-110) and getAllByText(/^Event \d+:/) of length n. In both, n comes from the input (eventList.length from the fixture document, events.length).
The PR body has a "Contains #3561" section stating it merges #3561 at 82323b8 and flips those assertions.
No invented values: every string and status traces to backend source, and every count derives from the inputs.
CI: 2 pass, 19 pending, 3 skipping. Head SHA Check Guard and PR Blocker Checklist show fail. On earlier runs these were the same startup failure, but I didn't recheck this run. I didn't run vitest because this worktree has no frontend/node_modules. The frontend jobs are still pending, so merge should wait for them to go green.

Clear prior event errors before API-key storage can fail.
If a rejected batch leaves epcisErrorEvents populated, a retry with a changed API key can fail in storeApiKey. prepareSubmit then returns before this reset. The page shows the old Event N: lines beneath the new API-key error. Clear the event errors before the key-storage attempt, or in its failure branch.

Use a Set to deduplicate event messages.
For a large rejected batch, messages.includes(message) scans the growing array for every error. This makes extraction quadratic before the page can display the errors. Track seen messages in a Set and keep the array to preserve display order.

Success-path EPCIS tests removed
Medium Severity
Success-path assertions for EPCIS ingest were replaced with all-failed mocks. Batch, single-event, XML, partial-accept, validate-only, and dashboard-refresh outcomes are no longer checked. Empty {} file bodies do not require that; mockResolvedValue can still cover accepted and mixed results. This weakens the required tests for the ingest behavior change.
Align the system-sim description with the workflow.
system-sim no longer runs full-flow.js or export-validate.js; the workflow runs only bad-data.js. This line still claims full flow + bad data + export validation. Update the description so the README does not report checks that do not run.
The workflow context confirms this mismatch.

Retain success-path tests with synthetic valid fixtures.
The empty events make the JSON cases rejection-only. The changed mocks also replace the former successful single-event, XML, and validate-only outcomes. Keep the new failure tests, but restore valid synthetic fixtures and success assertions. Otherwise, successful ingestion and dashboard refresh can regress without failing this suite.
As per path instructions: “Flag tests that were weakened, skipped, or loosened (broader asserts, removed tenant checks, xfail) to make a change pass.”

Use distinct errors to test event attribution.
Both rejection builders assign BACKEND_EVENT_ERRORS to every indexed event. expectEveryEventRejected also expects the same joined message for every event. A swapped index-to-error pairing can therefore pass these tests.
Use distinct error lists for each event, pass the list at index in both builders, and assert the matching joined list.
Apply the same change to the partial rejection builder, and derive each assertion from BACKEND_EVENT_ERRORS_BY_INDEX[index] instead of the shared JOINED_EVENT_ERRORS.

Review
The core fix is sound: epcisErrorEventMessages reads both backend 400 shapes — atomic (detail.errors[{index, status_code, detail}]) and partial (top-level errors[{index, detail}]) — and correctly falls back to [] for single-event 400s where errors is a list of strings. The new tests exercise the atomic, partial, and single-event paths with shapes that match the backend source, and no synthetic data or tenant-scoping changes are introduced.
Blocking finding
Stale Event N: lines after an API-key save failure — frontend/src/app/ingest/page.tsx:227 (with the reset at :241)
prepareSubmit sets epcisError and returns from the storeApiKey failure branch at :229, before the setEpcisErrorEvents([]) reset at :241. Repro:
Submit an EPCIS batch that fails with per-event errors; epcisErrorEvents is populated at :316.
Change the API key and submit again.
storeApiKey rejects; :227 sets the API-key error, :229 returns, and the old Event 1: … lines remain in state.
The failure callout then renders the API-key error heading followed by per-event errors from the previous upload (:853), which does not describe the current failure. Clearing epcisErrorEvents before the storeApiKey attempt, or in its catch branch, fixes it.
Non-blocking observations
Test attribution gap — frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis-batch-errors.test.tsx:68,81 and frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis.test.tsx:83-87,101: every index is given the same BACKEND_EVENT_ERRORS, so the tests verify count and labels but cannot detect a wrong index-to-error mapping. Distinct per-index error lists would make the assertions stronger.
Quadratic dedupe — frontend/src/lib/epcis-upload.ts:130: messages.includes(message) scans the growing array for every error. Since each line is prefixed with its unique Event N: label, deduplication is effectively unnecessary; if kept, a Set avoids quadratic work on a large rejected batch.
prepareSubmit returned early on a failed API-key save before resetting
prior results, so stale per-event errors stayed on screen. Reset all
result/error state and mutation state first. Show URL-tab save failures
in the Ingestion Failed callout via urlError instead of statusError,
which only renders while a jobId exists.
Tests: EPCIS stale per-event errors cleared on save failure; URL tab
shows the save error and sends no request.

URL error skips load-error class
Low Severity
The new urlError state is shown in the Ingestion Failed callout, but PageContainer still omits it from the workspace-load-error condition. A URL-tab API-key save failure therefore leaves the healthy workspace status badge visible, unlike the file and EPCIS tabs.

Move the job-state reset until API-key storage succeeds.
prepareSubmit clears jobId before storeApiKey runs. If the save fails, the function returns false, so no new request starts. The running job's polling stops, and its job badge and status are hidden. Keep the job state until the save succeeds, so a failed save leaves the active job visible.

Superseded by #3661: the same net changes as one conventional commit on a clean branch off main. Commit Message Check fails here because of the inherited non-conventional commit 120f8b3. Credit for the work stays with DeepSeek. I'm leaving this PR open for now.
Update: the replacement is now #3665, the same commit 3e200d0 on branch gemini/ingest-3578-clean. #3661 closed when I renamed its branch to the engine prefix that Engine Review Pass requires.
Non-atomic results[].ok=false shape is unsupported — epcis-upload.ts ~125 returns no messages without errors[]. Atomic top-level errors[] works; the alternate shape is unhandled and untested.
ingest-csv.test.tsx still invents event IDs (~63), job ID (~115), and timestamp (~58). These predate the PR but remain in the touched test file; replace with runtime uuid4/randomUUID (or data-free assertions). New EPCIS batch-error tests are compliant.
XSS: error text rendered as escaped React text. API-key save clears prior upload errors. 27/27 focused tests passed.
Note: Commit Message Check is red on this head (old non-conventional commit); squash title in the PR body is fine, but that check is still failing.
Supplier Data Quality & Agreed Sending Hours (Backend & Schema)
Schema & Migrations: Alembic migrations v136 (supplier_facilities.agreed_sending_hours) and v137 (fsma.epcis_document_receipts) are properly sequenced and mirrored with complete downgrade paths, table-level RLS policies, and tenant indexing.
Service Logic (services/shared/supplier_data_quality.py): Correctly implements the four decoupled quality metrics (missing_kde, unlinked_lot, late_cte, epcis_failed). Denominator thresholds (MIN_RECORDS = 20) accurately gate ratios to not_enough_data, and unconfigured agreed sending hours are safely flagged without skewing percentages.
API Scoping (services/admin/app/supplier_compliance_routes.py): New endpoints (/v1/supplier/data-quality, /v1/supplier/data-quality/{facility_id}/records, /v1/supplier/admin/facilities/{facility_id}/agreed-sending-hours) enforce tenant context, UUID validation, and user facility ownership. The PUT route enforces require_tenant_admin role gating.
Removal of Synthetic Demo Data & Honest Empty States
Proof Recall & Mock Audits (proof_recall_router.py, mock_audit.py): Replaced fake simulated drills and synthetic datasets with an honest empty state (data_available: false), returning deterministic responses and 409 status when no real tenant records exist.
Frontend Consistency: Replaced mock fallbacks and fake timelines in RecallReportPage, DrillSimulatorClient, KnowledgeGraph, ExportPage, and UnifiedDashboardClient with genuine empty states (EmptyState, "No data yet"), directing users to record import instead of presenting fabricated compliance proof.
Backend Hardening & Error Handling
Export Protections (epcis_export.py): Replaced silent 5000-event query truncations with an explicit _MAX_EXPORT_EVENTS = 50000 limit, returning 413 Payload Too Large when exceeded and 503 Service Unavailable on storage failures (SEL-506, SEL-508).
Trace Truncation (tracer.py, SEL-515): Added explicit truncated and truncation_limit metadata when graph queries exceed TRACE_ROW_LIMIT = 5000.
Scheduler Integrity (services/scheduler/service.py): Exception swallowing in drain_webhook_outbox was removed so that failures propagate to APScheduler rather than recording false successes.
Facility Deletion Concurrency (supplier_facilities_routes.py): Added row-level locking (with_for_update()) and explicit linked-record counts (_facility_linked_counts) to prevent race conditions during deletion.
Security & Route Manifest Alignment
Added entries for all three new admin/supplier endpoints in docs/security/route-security-manifest.json with updated operation counts (enabled_operation_count: 258, tenant-scoped: 205).
Tenant boundaries in .semgrep/tenant-scope-allowlist.yml and .secrets.baseline line markers were updated accurately for the modified services.
Copy-Linting & Governance Automation
scripts/copy-lint/check-copy.mjs was extended with --gate and --base-baseline comparison algorithms (gateCompare, countsByFileRule) to ensure PRs cannot increase copy rule violations against main.
Public and documentation references to EPCIS features are consistently designated as (Preview), and invalid claims/denylist entities were scrubbed.
Frontend Race Conditions & Test Suite Hardening
StepUpModal (StepUpModal.tsx): Added requestIdRef to invalidate stale asynchronous passkey login callbacks if the modal is cancelled before authentication completes.
Visual Crawler (crawl.spec.ts): Added navigation failure tracking (navigationFailed) to prevent stale DOM from previous pages generating false broken link/dead end reports, along with XML entity decoding for sitemaps.
Comprehensive unit and integration test coverage accompanies every change (test_supplier_data_quality.py, test_supplier_data_quality_live.py, test_supplier_facilities_routes_1342.py, test_epcis_document_receipts.py, test_proof_recall_router.py, step-up-modal.test.tsx, check-copy.test.mjs).
…s before API-key save (#3665)
* fix(ingest): list per-event EPCIS batch errors, clear stale results before API-key save, show URL-tab errors
Supersedes #3578 with the same net changes on a clean branch off main. Original work by DeepSeek.
* fix(ingest): hide success badge on URL-tab key-save failure
* fix(ingest): keep active job on failed API-key save; dedupe EPCIS errors with a Set
* fix(ingest): clear URL-tab error on tab change and file select
* fix(ingest): keep save error and receipt on stale job completion; use runtime job IDs in tests

Squash title
fix(ingest): list per-event errors for rejected EPCIS batchesCommit Message Check fails only on 120f8b3 ("Remove made-up sample files from frontend/public/samples"), which is not a Conventional Commit. Rewriting it would need a rebase or force push, which we do not do, so squash merge with the title above.
Summary
An all-failed EPCIS batch is a 400 rejection, and the /ingest page showed only a heading message with no per-event errors. This lists
Event N: <errors joined>lines under the existing message for both backend shapes:_batch_transactional()):detail {error:'batch_validation_failed', mode:'atomic', message, errors:[{index, status_code, detail:{errors}}]}from_ingest_batch_events_db_atomic(persistence.py).{total, created:0, failed, results:[], errors:[{index, detail}], mode:'partial'}.Adds
epcisErrorEventMessagesinfrontend/src/lib/epcis-upload.ts. The existing heading message (epcisErrorMessage) is unchanged.Tests
New
frontend/src/__tests__/pages/ingest-epcis-batch-errors.test.tsx: data-free{}events, shapes copied from the backend source, counts derived from the input length. It covers atomic, partial, and a failure without per-event errors.vitest (both ingest-epcis files plus src/lib): 41/41. eslint is clean. tsc reports only the existing

This branch merges origin/hermes/remove-made-up-samples (#3561 at 82323b8). #3561's
ingest-epcis.test.tsxassertions for the atomic and partial rejections are flipped here to expect oneEvent N:line per event. The negative case iningest-epcis-batch-errors.test.tsxnow uses the real single-event 400{detail:{errors}}and asserts the message renders once with noEvent N:lines.Note
Low Risk
Frontend-only ingest error display and submit-state clearing; no API or persistence behavior changes.
Overview
Rejected EPCIS batch uploads on
/ingestnow showEvent N: …lines under the existing failure heading for both backend shapes (atomicdetail.errorsand partial-mode bodies without adetailwrapper), via newepcisErrorEventMessagesinepcis-upload.tsandepcisErrorEventsstate on the ingest page. Single-event failures still show one combined message with noEvent N:prefix.Submit handling clears prior results/errors before attempting to save a changed API key, so a failed key write no longer leaves stale batch error lines. URL tab API-key save failures use dedicated
urlError(with Ingestion Failed UI) instead of job status error; tests cover URL, EPCIS clear-on-retry, and the updated batch expectations.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 89ea2b5. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
