What

Removes the frozen synthetic recall drill from services/ingestion/app/proof_recall_router.py (POST /api/v1/proof/recall-drill):

  • invented lot SV-20240115-001, the farm, GLN, child lots, receiver names, event/facility counts
  • the four hard-coded steps and their made-up durations (the "7.0 s trace time")
  • the output_csv_url pointing at /samples/sample_recall_drill.csv

The endpoint now returns an honest empty result: data_available: false, steps: [], lot_code / time_to_trace_seconds / output_csv_url = null, a plain message, and fda_24h_mandate_seconds: 86400 (the 21 CFR 1.1455(c)(3) 24-hour window, a regulatory constant, not data). Rate limit (5/min/IP) unchanged.

Why empty instead of retiring

The frontend /proof/recall-drill page still calls this endpoint, and the route is registered in server/main.py, services/ingestion/main.py, server/router_policy.py, server/route_security_policy.py and the route-security manifest. Retiring it would break the page and need coordinated policy/manifest changes. The endpoint is tenantless by design and must never read tenant data, so it has no real drill to show; an explicit empty result is the honest answer and keeps the contract stable while Kimi updates the page.

Scope

Tests (data-free)

  • services/ingestion/tests/test_proof_recall_router.py: 10 passed. Asserts the empty shape, null lot/CSV/time, no /samples/ reference, no frozen constants in the module, tenant header ignored (runtime uuid4), 429 on the 6th call, determinism.
  • tests/test_router_policy.py: 10 passed. scripts/check_trust_safety_copy.py: passed.
  • Ingestion collect-only: 5807 collected (with --ignore of test_ingest_error_logging_2868.py, fixed by test(ingestion): make #2868 error-logging tests data-free to fix collection #3528).

VS Code Grok reviews.

Note

Medium Risk
Public API response shape and semantics change for an unauthenticated production endpoint; consumers and the proof UI must handle empty drill data until frontend is updated.

Overview
Removes the synthetic public recall drill from POST /api/v1/proof/recall-drill and replaces it with an explicit empty payload so the tenantless endpoint no longer presents invented lots, steps, trace timings, or a sample CSV URL.

The response now sets data_available: false, empty steps, null lot_code / time_to_trace_seconds / output_csv_url, plus a message and timestamp; only fda_24h_mandate_seconds (86400) remains as a regulatory constant. Rate limiting and the no-tenant-data guarantee are unchanged.

Tests in test_proof_recall_router.py assert the empty contract, forbid frozen dataset module constants, and block /samples/ references. Docs (PRODUCTION_SURFACE.md, PRODUCT_DESCRIPTION.md, TRUST_CLAIMS_MATRIX.md) are updated so production/trust copy no longer describes a reproducible synthetic recall drill on this route.

Note: The route stays mounted for the existing /proof/recall-drill page; frontend handling of empty steps is out of scope for this PR.

Walkthrough

The recall-drill API now returns an empty result instead of synthetic drill data. Its response includes data_available and message, with empty steps and nullable trace time, CSV URL, and lot code. The page renders API-provided results, shows an empty state when data is unavailable, and does not substitute sample results after endpoint failure. Tests and public descriptions reflect these changes.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: Low · up to 09c35

Positive recall-drill results could be misrendered without test detection; the current unavailable-data path remains consistent and the follow-up risk is bounded.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 09c35

The change removes misleading results without adding access to customer data. Remaining uncertainty concerns older clients and deployments that update the page and API at different times.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — On the confirmed path, independently callable public requests affect response generation, rate-limit accounting, and logging, not tenant records or privileged operations. The response-contract change reaches the public page through the existing ingestion proxy; no broader data-store or cross-tenant exposure was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The ingestion proxy classifies proof routes as unauthenticated. Although its general forwarding path can attach authorization, API-key, and tenant headers, the recall-drill handler does not consume them for identity, authority, or data selection. The PR preserves the public tenantless boundary rather than weakening an authenticated tenant boundary.

Explanation

The title names the main change: the synthetic recall drill in the ingestion endpoint is replaced with an empty result. It is specific and matches the changeset, and it uses a conventional commit prefix.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the What, Why, Scope, and Tests sections. It does not follow the template: the Type of Change, Test Plan checkboxes, Checklist, and Related Issues sections are missing. The Summary section is present as a What section but is not labeled as the template expects. The description also includes CURSOR_SUMMARY and Bugbot boilerplate that is not part of the template. The content is substantive and the change is clearly described.

REVIEW: PASS grok e4123dc

Delta re-review of #3551 against my FAIL at aa7fb5e. The commits since then are db3f401, c455b18 and e4123dc.

All earlier blockers are resolved in frontend/src/app/proof/recall-drill/page.tsx:

  • Empty state: when !data_available || steps.length === 0 (:135), the page renders data-testid="recall-drill-empty" with the API message (:222-226). It shows no drill log, stats or CSV.
  • Fake data is gone: RECALL_CSV_URL, DEFAULT_DRILL_STEPS/RESPONSE, TRACE_NODES, the hardcoded lot/farm/GLN, the "from sample data" copy and the idle explainer have all been removed. A fetch error now shows role=alert and doesn't fall back to a canned drill.
  • Trace time: traceSeconds = drill?.time_to_trace_seconds ?? null. The Time-to-trace tile, the "done · Ns total" label and the Margin tile only render when the value is non-null. The step-duration sum (:97) only drives the running animation clock and is never shown as the trace time.
  • Type: RecallDrillResponse now has data_available, message, and nullable time_to_trace_seconds/output_csv_url/lot_code. The CSV card only renders when output_csv_url is present.
  • Tests: there are 3 data-free tests that use randomUUID values. They cover the empty state with the API message (no log/time/CSV/samples link), rendering only the returned steps with no invented trace time, and the error path with no fallback.
  • ruff I001: fixed (db3f401).
  • Docs: the PRODUCTION_SURFACE.md, PRODUCT_DESCRIPTION.md, TRUST_CLAIMS_MATRIX.md and case-studies/page.tsx edits accurately describe the endpoint as currently returning no drill data.
  • e4123dc only deletes frontend/public/samples/sample_recall_drill.csv. Nothing in the repo references it except the dated QA inventory docs/qa/2026-10-02/artifacts/frontend/20261003T003602.752872Z-static-inventory.txt:716, which is acceptable.

Verification: vitest proof-recall-drill.test.tsx passed 3/3. eslint is clean on the changed files, and tsc shows no errors in recall-drill or case-studies. pytest test_proof_recall_router.py passed 10. ruff check is clean. I ran these at c455b18; the delta to e4123dc only deletes an unreferenced public asset.

Non-blocking:

  • docs/PRODUCT_DESCRIPTION.md: "a browser verifier, a downloadable Python bundle verifier let reviewers..." is missing "and".
  • These public assets still carry the same synthetic identifiers but aren't part of this page: frontend/public/proof/fsma-204-sample.csv, frontend/public/proof/epcis-sample.jsonld and frontend/public/samples/sandbox_sample_ftl.csv. They're out of scope here; follow up separately if wanted.

CI at e4123dc: 46 pending, 2 pass, 4 skipping, 1 fail. The failure is PR Blocker Checklist, which is waiting on reviews. Under the freeze, nothing merges until CI is green.

Disclosure: review written by Grok (headless Grok Build) and posted with C.Lee's approval on Oct 23, 2026 ("Yes, post it", 2:40 PM PT).

Branch updated with main

Main was merged into claude/proof-recall-router-real-data at the new head (cf56c8680805df5823179da0222e944cd3404813).

Because merge commits created with GITHUB_TOKEN do not trigger workflows, a push to this branch or a manual CI re-run is needed for checks to run on it.

REVIEW: PASS muse 92c4102

Full review at 92c4102. proof_recall_router now returns an honest empty result (data_available false, steps [], lot_code/time_to_trace/output_csv_url null); frozen lot, steps and sample CSV removed; the only constant is the 24h window from 21 CFR 1.1455(c)(3). Page renders only API-returned steps and never derives a trace time; error path shows no fallback drill. Tests use crypto.randomUUID()/uuid4 and today's date only. No made-up data. Remaining reference to sample_recall_drill.csv is only a historical QA inventory artifact (non-blocking). Other files in the diff come from the main merge (#3552). CI: all required checks green; only visual-report (non-required) fails, outside this diff.

REVIEW: PASS grok cf56c86

Delta review from my previous PASS at 92c4102.

  • 92c4102..cf56c86 is one commit, cf56c86 "ci: trigger required gates" (Christopher, parent 92c4102, signed off). It is an empty commit.
  • Tree hash is the same at both SHAs: fe65132d3e6923d5ebca7047e668b2d3e84c185a. git diff --stat is empty.
  • No merge of main and no conflict edits. Content is byte-identical to what I already passed, so the previous findings carry over unchanged. No new data of any kind.

REVIEW: FAIL muse 5d32b2b
Since cf56c86 the new commits are only merges of main, and the PR diff is byte-identical. Re-checked against C.Lee's rule against removing the recall drill simulations: this PR deletes frontend/public/samples/sample_recall_drill.csv and replaces the /proof/recall-drill simulation with an empty result (proof_recall_router.py and recall-drill/page.tsx). That removes a protected recall drill simulation, so this supersedes my earlier PASS. Keep sample_recall_drill.csv and the /proof/recall-drill simulation.

REVIEW: PASS muse 5d32b2b
Supersedes my FAIL (5637000558) under C.Lee's 10:30 PM PT ruling allowing deletion of sample_recall_drill.csv and the /proof/recall-drill simulation. Head unchanged; PR diff byte-identical to the cf56c86 pass. Does not touch the drill simulator's Load Sample Data or generateSampleCSV (no drill-simulator/record-validator changes). Replaces synthetic drill with an honest empty result; adds no made-up data.

Delta review of ae1aa17 (main merged in).

Content checks pass:

  • The remerge-diff only resolves conflicts with #3543. It takes main's case-studies page and PRODUCT_DESCRIPTION wording, deletes proof/recall-drill/page.tsx and its test, and moves /proof/recall-drill to expectRedirectOr404 in routes.json.
  • sample_recall_drill.csv is deleted.
  • DrillSimulatorClient is untouched.
  • No frontend imports or links reference proof/recall-drill or sample_recall_drill. The remaining recall-drill hits are /dashboard/recall-drills.

Blocking: CI is red. The 'Repo-root security/RLS/isolation suite' fails the schema parity audit: 'EXTRA TABLE: public.data_gap_events', which comes from #3572 on main. The snapshot needs regenerating, and main's same workflow is failing too. As a result, PR Gate: Backend, Backend CI Status Gate, CI Status Gate and Head SHA Check Guard are red, and so is PR Blocker Checklist. Re-review once main's snapshot is fixed and merged in.

REVIEW: PASS muse 41b9daf

Delta review. 41b9daf is a merge of ae1aa17 and main 2eaad75, with no conflicts. Every file in the PR diff has the same blob as at ae1aa17. The extra frontend recall-drill files in the old diff are gone because main already deleted them. All required checks are green; the only red check is the Engine Review Pass gate, which this review satisfies. visual-report is non-required. The earlier FAIL at ae1aa17 was for the stale red that #3585 fixed.

  • ae1aa17 is a merge of main (a9cb1f0) into 5d32b2b; its only resolution edits delete the /proof/recall-drill page and test (allowed by C.Lee's 10:30 PM PT ruling) and take main's versions of case-studies/page.tsx and routes.json (blobs equal main at 41b9daf).
  • PR diff vs main on the 5 PR files is byte-identical to the diff Muse passed at 5d32b2b. No non-merge changes since.
  • tests/test_proof_recall_router.py: 10 passed at 41b9daf.
