Problem and user impact

Closes #63

Enterprise Linux workstations (RHEL, Fedora, openSUSE) and developer machines frequently ship rootless Podman rather than Docker Engine. Previously, run-spaceapp assumed Docker across installation, Compose execution, storage preflight, diagnostics, and lifecycle management.

Change

  • Engine detection, selection, and persistence (packages/run-spaceapp/src/engine.mjs, src/index.mjs, src/cli.mjs):
    • Adds --engine docker|podman and --answers '{"engine":"podman","confirm":true}' support, persisting engine in config.json for subsequent lifecycle commands (up, down, status, logs, doctor, doctor --fix, backup, restore, update, rollback, workspace, credentials, provider install, user, owner, support-bundle, reinstall, factory-reset, uninstall).
    • Preserves Docker as the default when both engines are available; offers rootless Podman interactively (or selects it in --non-interactive mode) when Docker is unavailable and Podman is ready.
    • Fails closed with an actionable migration message (backup, uninstall, restore) when attempting to switch engines on an existing installation.
  • Trusted execution & Compose provider contract:
    • Adds a literal "podman" branch to spawnTrustedCommand and PODMAN_COMPOSE_PROVIDER to trustedEnvironmentNames.
    • Runs podman compose with PODMAN_COMPOSE_PROVIDER=docker-compose (requiring docker-compose >= 2.20.0 for depends_on.required: false).
  • Rootless Linux, SELinux, and macOS Podman machine preflight:
    • Verifies Podman 5+, rootless mode, cgroup v2, delegated cpu and memory controllers (/sys/fs/cgroup/user.slice/user-<uid>.slice/user@<uid>.service/cgroup.controllers), and an active rootless Podman API socket.
    • Never auto-installs Podman; prints distribution-specific manual installation instructions when missing.
    • Rejects --access host-root under Podman before mutating state.
    • Renders userns_mode: keep-id:uid=10001,gid=10001, user: 0:0, and bind.selinux: z in compose.workspaces.yml for spaceapp-core, spaceapp-cli, spaceapp-browser, and multi-user spaceapp-cli-<slug> containers when engine === "podman", while refusing unsafe SELinux relabel paths ($HOME, /, and system directories).
    • Checks macOS podman machine inspect CPU, memory, and disk resources (both top-level and nested Resources shapes) against the selected profile and prints the exact podman machine stop && podman machine set ... && podman machine start command when undersized.
  • Storage preflight, diagnostics, and CI (src/storage.mjs, .github/workflows/platform-matrix.yml):
    • Updates inspectStoragePlan to query podman info --format json (host.cpus, host.memTotal, host.arch, store.graphRoot) and accept unprefixed 64-hex image IDs from podman image inspect.
    • Extends doctor and support-bundle to report engine name, version, rootless mode, cgroup version, CPU/memory delegation, API socket, and Compose provider version.
    • Adds the Rootless Podman / ubuntu-latest end-to-end job in platform-matrix.yml exercising small, medium, and 1.1.5 -> 1.1.6 upgrade/rollback lifecycles, plus unit tests in packages/run-spaceapp/tests/engine.test.mjs and Windows POSIX mode guards in multi-user.test.mjs / pilot-findings.test.mjs.

Verification

  • Relevant automated tests pass (npm test -w run-spaceapp, npm run check -w run-spaceapp, npm run pack:dry-run -w run-spaceapp).
  • Linux, macOS, and/or Windows coverage is listed (197 unit tests passing on Windows + Launcher matrix across Ubuntu/macOS/Windows + Rootless Podman / ubuntu-latest end-to-end job).
  • UI changes include real browser console/network evidence (N/A ? CLI launcher change only).
  • No credentials, tokens, personal memory, customer data, private paths, or runtime state are included (node scripts/space-hygiene-check.mjs --preflight passes).
  • Documentation and changelog are updated when behavior changes (README.md, docs/getting-started.md, packages/run-spaceapp/README.md).
  • Security, migration, resource, and rollback effects are described.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added rootless Podman support on Linux and macOS alongside Docker. New installations can select an available engine; Docker remains the default when both are available.
    • Added engine-specific setup checks and diagnostics, including Podman prerequisite guidance and macOS machine sizing checks.
    • Podman cannot be combined with host-root access, and existing installations cannot switch engines.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup guidance to explain engine selection, requirements, and limitations, including that Podman on Windows is unsupported.

Walkthrough

The launcher adds rootless Podman support alongside Docker. It saves the selected engine and uses it for lifecycle commands, workspace Compose output, storage inspection, and diagnostics. Documentation and CI describe and exercise Podman workflows and platform constraints.

Changes: Rootless Podman support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Engine selection and Podman runtime configuration
packages/run-spaceapp/src/engine.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/src/index.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/tests/engine.test.mjs
Adds engine selection and Podman prerequisite checks. Configuration validation prevents engine changes on existing installations and rejects Podman with host-root access. Podman workspace Compose output adds user-namespace settings and SELinux bind labels.
Engine-aware CLI lifecycle
packages/run-spaceapp/src/cli.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/src/index.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/tests/engine.test.mjs
Adds --engine parsing and selection. The CLI uses the saved engine for installation, runtime, maintenance, and provider commands. Tests cover engine selection, command construction, and lifecycle behavior.
Storage and engine diagnostics
packages/run-spaceapp/src/storage.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/src/cli.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/tests/engine.test.mjs
Storage checks use the configured engine and account for Podman image and host data. Doctor output and support bundles include engine-specific facts.
CI coverage and platform guidance
.github/workflows/platform-matrix.yml, README.md, docs/getting-started.md, packages/run-spaceapp/README.md, packages/run-spaceapp/package.json, packages/run-spaceapp/tests/pilot-findings.test.mjs
Adds rootless Podman lifecycle, profile, upgrade, rollback, and cleanup checks. Documentation describes engine prerequisites and limitations. Package metadata and the syntax check are updated.

Podman users can hit lifecycle commands that act on Docker when DOCKER_HOST is set. Podman installs that provide Compose only as a CLI plugin outside PATH can fail preflight and lifecycle commands. Resolve these before merge. Doctor output and CI assertions also need small fixes.

Explanation

Issue [#63] is active and directly linked. The implementation covers engine selection, persistence, Podman preflight, Compose setup, diagnostics, migration refusal, host-root refusal, documentation, and tests. The reported Podman CI job exercises small and medium, but not the required large profile. The required large-profile readiness and lifecycle behavior therefore remain unverified.

Resolution

Add an Ubuntu rootless Podman CI flow for the large profile. Verify installation, /readyz, the required lifecycle commands, backup and restore behavior, and uninstall --purge-data with final container and volume cleanup.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The change sets packages/run-spaceapp/package.json license metadata from MIT to Apache-2.0. Issue [#63] requests Podman launcher support, tests, CI, and documentation. It does not request a license change, and the metadata change has no demonstrated connection to those objectives.

Resolution

Revert the packages/run-spaceapp/package.json license change to MIT, or document separate repository authorization for this licensing change.

Assert that the upgrade and rollback use Podman.

The workflow starts the upgrade with --engine podman, but the existing checks only validate versions and perform Podman cleanup after uninstall. wait_ready checks only the HTTP endpoint. If the saved engine is lost and Docker is available, update and rollback can use Docker while these checks still pass. Assert the saved engine after install, update, and rollback. Assert that Podman has project containers before purge.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not offer Podman by default on unsupported platforms.

detectEngines runs on every platform. On Windows with Podman installed and no Docker, requestedEngine becomes "podman". In non-interactive mode, promptChoice returns index 0, which is Podman. checkPodman then fails with "Podman is supported only on Linux and macOS". That is the host where the automatic Docker install path should run. The issue also puts Windows Podman out of scope.

Skip Podman detection on win32.

Require explicit confirmation for non-interactive Podman setup.

When --non-interactive runs with a TTY and confirm is absent, Podman sets defaultYes to true. PromptController.readLine then returns the default "y", so finalConfirmation applies the plan without explicit approval. Remove automated from both confirmation calls.

Update both confirmation calls in the finalConfirmation flow to omit the
automated option, so non-interactive Podman setup cannot apply the plan based on
a default “yes” and still requires explicit confirmation.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add a timeout to the engine detection probes.

detectEngines now runs docker info and podman info on every fresh install, before any prompt. executeCommand applies no timeout unless spec.timeoutMs is set. If a daemon or Podman machine hangs, the install blocks forever. captureProbe already uses timeoutMs: 15000 for the same kind of probe.

Add a 15-second timeout to the engine detection probe’s execute call in
detectEngines, matching the timeout used by captureProbe so a stalled Docker or
Podman daemon cannot block installation indefinitely.

Staged Podman installs reference a seccomp profile that does not exist.

installCommand calls commitInstallation(stagedStateRoot, config, { projectRoot: root }). That function writes seccomp-cli.json only to projectRoot (Lines 1117-1118). It then calls writeRuntimeFiles(root, config) with root set to the staged directory. Line 989 passes that staged directory as root. For Podman with cliSandbox enabled, renderWorkspaceCompose therefore emits seccomp=<stagedStateRoot>/seccomp-cli.json. No file exists at that path.

stagedComposeCommand("up") uses this staged compose.workspaces.yml. On hosts where userNamespacesUsable() returns true, the staged up can fail when it creates spaceapp-cli. The Ubuntu 24.04 CI job does not catch this because AppArmor restricts user namespaces there, so cliSandbox is false. Docker is not affected. It uses the relative ./seccomp-cli.json, which resolves against --project-directory.

Pass the project root separately from the state root.

Proposed fix

+export async function writeRuntimeFiles(root, config, { projectRoot = root } = {}) {

+  await atomicWrite(join(root, "compose.workspaces.yml"), renderWorkspaceCompose(config, { cliSandbox: await userNamespacesUsable(), root: projectRoot }));

In commitInstallation (Line 1119), pass the project root:

-  await writeRuntimeFiles(root, config);
+  await writeRuntimeFiles(root, config, { projectRoot });

Review comment at @packages/run-spaceapp/src/index.mjs at line 989:
Update writeRuntimeFiles to accept the project root separately from the state
root and pass projectRoot from commitInstallation. Use the project root when
calling renderWorkspaceCompose so staged Podman compose files reference the
existing seccomp profile, while continuing to write runtime files under the
state root.

Thank you for contributing and for sharing your work. This PR is awaiting maintainer review; the automated review does not replace that step.

For the bounty issues, we review PRs in the order they were opened, under the terms on the issue. An earlier PR that misses an acceptance criterion does not block a later complete solution. Please include the checks you ran yourself, their results, your environment, and any limitations, if those details are not already in the PR.

We appreciate the time you have put into this.

Check the Podman socket, not only its path.

On Linux, podmanFacts can report remoteSocket.path when no socket is listening there. Doctor then reports PASS Rootless API socket, although checkPodman rejects the same installation. Apply the socket check used by checkPodman so doctor reports the actionable failure.

Prevent Podman Compose from inheriting a Docker endpoint.

If the launcher inherits DOCKER_HOST pointing to Docker, Podman preserves that value when it starts its Compose provider. A Podman-selected up, down, or purge can therefore operate on Docker instead of the selected Podman engine. executeCommand merges the command environment with process.env, so setting PODMAN_COMPOSE_PROVIDER does not prevent this. Remove or validate DOCKER_HOST for Podman Compose commands. (github.com)

Resolve the Compose provider before forcing its name.

When Docker Compose is installed only as a CLI plugin outside PATH, Podman can discover it, but this override makes Podman execute docker-compose by name. The prerequisite check and every lifecycle command then fail. Use a verified provider path instead of assuming a PATH executable. (github.com)

Based on learnings, Podman also searches Docker CLI-plugin locations for Compose providers.
