/claim #63

Closes #63

Summary

Adds rootless Podman (podman compose) as a supported container engine in run-spaceapp on Linux and macOS alongside Docker.

Changes

  • Config & Compose generation (packages/run-spaceapp/src/index.mjs):
    • Adds engine ("docker" | "podman") to config.json validation and prepareInstallation (refusing in-place engine switches on existing installations with backup/reinstall/restore guidance, and rejecting --access host-root with Podman).
    • Writes compose.podman.yml when engine === "podman" to set userns_mode: "keep-id:uid=10001,gid=10001" for spaceapp-core, spaceapp-cli, and spaceapp-browser, and annotates workspace bind mounts in compose.workspaces.yml with bind: { selinux: "z" }.
    • Dispatches composeCommand with podman compose and runs backup/restore under 10001:10001 on Podman so files created in ./backups match the mapped host user.
  • Prerequisites & storage (packages/run-spaceapp/src/prerequisites.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/src/storage.mjs):
    • Adds podmanIsReady, detectAvailableEngines, ensurePodmanAvailable, podmanInstallHelp, and checkPodmanMachineResources (validating podman machine inspect CPU, RAM, and disk on macOS against the selected profile and printing podman machine set commands when undersized).
    • Updates inspectStoragePlan to query the configured engine, handle bare 64-character image IDs from podman image inspect, measure store.graphRoot on Linux, and probe free disk inside the Podman VM on macOS via podman machine ssh df -k.
  • CLI & diagnostics (packages/run-spaceapp/src/cli.mjs):
    • Adds "podman" to trustedCommands and static spawnTrustedCommand dispatch.
    • Supports --engine docker|podman on install and reinstall, --answers engine selection, and interactive fallback to Podman when Docker is not installed on Linux/macOS.
    • Updates doctor and support-bundle to report Podman version, rootless mode, cgroup version, and CPU/memory controller delegation.
  • Tests, CI & Docs:
    • Adds packages/run-spaceapp/tests/podman.test.mjs (182 passing tests across the run-spaceapp test suite).
    • Adds the podman-linux job in .github/workflows/platform-matrix.yml exercising a full rootless Podman small install, /readyz check, doctor, backup, and uninstall --purge-data.
    • Updates README.md, docs/getting-started.md, and packages/run-spaceapp/README.md.

Verification

  • node --test packages/run-spaceapp/tests/*.test.mjs (182 pass, 0 fail)
  • npm run check -w run-spaceapp
  • npm run pack:dry-run -w run-spaceapp

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added rootless Podman as an alternative to Docker on Linux and macOS, with command-line and interactive setup options.
    • Added engine-aware runtime operations, diagnostics, backups, restores, and setup checks.
    • Added Podman-specific resource checks and support for selecting the engine during installation.
    • Existing installations cannot switch engines directly; switching requires backing up, reinstalling, and restoring. Podman does not support host-root access.
  • Documentation
    • Updated installation prerequisites and getting-started guides to cover Podman requirements, limitations, and engine switching.

Podman installs can run workspace, user, backup extras and restore extras commands through Docker without the Podman overlay, which can fail or misconfigure permissions. The new CI job may also fail at its uninstall step. Fix both before merging; the per-user mount gap is narrower.

The changed source, tests, CI workflow, and documentation support issue #63. They cover Podman selection, engine dispatch, storage checks, diagnostics, engine-switch safeguards, host-root rejection, CI validation, and user guidance. No unrelated change is established.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #63 requires the supported Compose provider and minimum versions. The launcher README states Podman 5 or newer with Compose support, but it does not name the provider or state the provider minimum version. The reviewed CI workflow runs only the Linux small profile. The available tests check configuration, command construction, and machine-resource logic, but they do not establish lifecycle coverage for medium and large profiles, SELinux-enforcing workspace mounts, or a macOS Podman installation.

Resolution

Document the supported Compose provider and its minimum version in the launcher documentation. Add reviewable automated or CI coverage for the required medium and large Linux lifecycle paths, SELinux-enforcing workspace mounts, and macOS Podman installation, or provide equivalent reviewable execution evidence.

The test overrides process.platform instead of passing platform: "darwin".

inspectStoragePlan now accepts a platform parameter. Pass platform: "darwin" as an argument. A global override can leak into concurrent tests.

packages/run-spaceapp/src/cli.mjs:1938
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Several composeCommand call sites do not pass engine, so they run docker compose on Podman installations.

composeCommand selects the engine from options.engine ?? options.config?.engine ?? "docker". These call sites pass only profile, companionsEnabled, and sometimes service:

  • Line 1938: workspaceCommand → applyWorkspaces.
  • Line 1994: exportArchive, used by backup through addBackupExtras.
  • Line 2034: restoreUserState.
  • Line 2050: restoreBackupExtras, used by restore.
  • Line 2139: waitForUserCli.
  • Line 2158: userCommand → apply.

On a Podman installation, each of these commands runs docker compose, and compose.podman.yml is not included. Two outcomes follow:

  • No Docker CLI installed: the backup extras and restore extras fail silently. workspace add and user changes print "could not pick it up".
  • Docker CLI installed: the Compose project is recreated without keep-id. Workspace and secret permissions can then break.

The new CI job hides this problem. It exports DOCKER_HOST to the Podman socket, and the runner has a docker binary.

Pass the engine explicitly at every call site. For example:

Proposed fix
-    const code = await execute(composeCommand(userId ? "up" : "syncWorkspaces", root, { profile: updated.profile, companionsEnabled: updated.companionsEnabled }), { stdin, stdout, stderr });
+    const code = await execute(composeCommand(userId ? "up" : "syncWorkspaces", root, { profile: updated.profile, companionsEnabled: updated.companionsEnabled, engine: updated.engine }), { stdin, stdout, stderr });
-    composeCommand(action, root, { profile: config.profile, companionsEnabled: config.companionsEnabled, service }),
+    composeCommand(action, root, { profile: config.profile, companionsEnabled: config.companionsEnabled, engine: config.engine, service }),

Apply the same engine: config.engine (or updated.engine) change at Lines 2034, 2050, 2139, and 2158.

Podman SELinux relabeling is missing for per-user CLI containers.

This block adds selinux: "z" only to the owner mounts. When config.users is defined, the bind helper at Lines 718-723 renders each user's workspace mounts without relabeling. renderPodmanCompose also sets userns_mode only for spaceapp-core, spaceapp-cli, and spaceapp-browser. It sets nothing for the spaceapp-cli-<slug> services.

validateConfig blocks only host-root with Podman. user enable and user add therefore remain reachable on a Podman installation. On an SELinux host, those user containers cannot write to workspace mounts. They also run without keep-id.

Extract one bind-mount builder that takes isPodman. Use it for both the owner mounts and bind. Add the per-user services to renderPodmanCompose, or reject user enable for Podman until they are supported.

Suggested direction
-  const mounts = config.workspaces.flatMap((workspace) => [
-    "      - type: bind",
-    ...
-  ]);
+  const bindMount = (workspace) => [
+    "      - type: bind",

+    `        read_only: ${workspace.readOnly}`,
+    ...(isPodman ? ["        bind:", '          selinux: "z"'] : [])
+  ];
+  const mounts = config.workspaces.flatMap(bindMount);

Then replace the local bind helper at Lines 718-723 with bindMount.
