Context & Summary

Resolves #63

This PR implements native support for rootless Podman on Linux and Podman machine on macOS in the run-spaceapp launcher, while preserving 100% backward compatibility for Docker users.

Architectural Highlights & Key Features

  1. Engine Selection & Configuration Persistence:

    • Accepts --engine docker|podman during install and persists the engine in config.json.
    • Supports non-interactive configuration through --answers '{"engine":"podman"}'.
    • Auto-detects running rootless Podman when Docker is missing without breaking interactive wizard flows.
  2. Compose & User Namespaces:

    • Dispatches compose actions via static command routing: podman compose -p <project> ...
    • Generates and injects compose.podman.yml with userns_mode: "keep-id:uid=10001,gid=10001" across spaceapp-core, spaceapp-cli, and spaceapp-browser, ensuring container UID 10001 processes map cleanly to the host user without permission issues on mounted volumes.
  3. SELinux Relabeling:

    • Dynamically applies bind: { selinux: "z" } to workspace mounts registered via workspace add and static volume directories (./backups, ./secrets/providers), ensuring full compatibility with SELinux-enforcing hosts (e.g., Fedora, RHEL).
  4. macOS Machine Resource Verification:

    • Implemented checkPodmanMachineResources to inspect VM CPU, Memory, and DiskSize from podman machine inspect and podman machine list.
    • Compares allocations against the chosen profile (small, medium, large) and provides exact non-destructive resize instructions (podman machine set) that never shrink disk capacity.
  5. Diagnostic & Telemetry Health (doctor & support-bundle):

    • doctor validates Podman CLI, Compose compatibility, engine accessibility, rootless execution, cgroup v2, and user controller delegation (cpu, memory, pids).
    • support-bundle collects sanitized engine facts without leaking secrets or credentials.
  6. Strict Data Safety Guards:

    • Blocks switching container engines on existing installations (including legacy Docker installations where engine is omitted in config.json), preventing data dislocation between Docker and Podman volume stores.
    • Refuses --access host-root when using Podman with clear guidance to use --access isolated.
    • Preserves the configured container engine across factory-reset, update, and repair.
  7. Automated Tests & Continuous Integration:

    • Added 10 dedicated test suites in packages/run-spaceapp/tests/podman.test.mjs verifying CLI engine selection, compose file generation, SELinux relabeling, machine sizing, doctor diagnostics, and safety guards.
    • All 174 tests in run-spaceapp pass with 0 failures and 0 regressions.
    • Added a dedicated rootless Podman job on ubuntu-latest in .github/workflows/platform-matrix.yml to exercise fresh install, readiness probe, backup, and purge.
  8. Documentation:

    • Updated packages/run-spaceapp/README.md, root README.md, and docs/getting-started.md with comprehensive setup, socket activation, and cgroup delegation instructions.

Podman support is incomplete: on Podman-only hosts, backup, restore, factory reset, and workspace or user operations call Docker and fail. macOS Podman installs may be rejected by a unit mismatch in the disk check, and the new Podman CI job and the documented engine-switch steps do not work as written. Fix these before merging.

Explanation

The changes remain within issue [#63]. Source changes implement Docker and Podman selection, Compose routing, user namespaces, SELinux mounts, machine checks, diagnostics, safety guards, and lifecycle preservation. The tests, CI lifecycle job, and documentation support those objectives. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Explanation

Issue [#63] requires the supported Podman and Compose provider minimum versions to be stated. The implementation only checks that podman --version and podman compose version return success. The launcher README and getting-started guide name podman-compose, but they do not state minimum versions. The current workflow now covers the required Ubuntu small-profile install, /readyz, backup, purge, and no-running-container check.

Resolution

Document the minimum supported Podman version and Compose provider version for Linux and macOS in the launcher README and getting-started guide. Align the prerequisite diagnostics with those documented minimums if the launcher must reject unsupported versions.

The "rootless Podman" CI job does not exercise Podman.

Every Podman test injects a mocked execute. The job therefore runs the same unit suite as the Ubuntu launcher job. No launcher code drives the real podman binary. The job name and the PR claim of a rootless Podman CI job overstate the coverage. Add at least one smoke step that runs real Podman. For example, render the runtime files and run podman compose -f ... config against them. That step validates the generated compose.podman.yml (userns_mode, bind.selinux) against a real provider.

All CodeRabbit review findings have been resolved in commit badca4951fc0ef729f27d427d1a58eb6368d1b17:

  1. packages/run-spaceapp/README.md:

    • Completed the truncated sentence on container engine disk capacity.
    • Added appropriate spacing and normalized the section heading to ## Container Engines: Docker and Rootless Podman.
  2. packages/run-spaceapp/src/cli.mjs:

    • Treated missing rawExisting.engine as "docker" in both engine switch checks and the configuration-change detection ((rawExisting.engine ?? "docker") !== parsed.requestedEngine), preventing same-version legacy Docker installs from triggering false-positive reconfiguration paths.
    • Passed the injected ensurePodman dependency through run into repairRuntime and updateCommand, following the established injection pattern.
  3. packages/run-spaceapp/tests/podman.test.mjs:

    • Updated the factory-reset unit test to provide the exact FACTORY-RESET confirmation string and asserted that the output matches /factory reset complete/, confirming that the reinitialization and engine preservation branch executed.
  4. .github/workflows/platform-matrix.yml:

    • Added a dedicated validation step executing real Podman Compose configuration validation against the generated compose.podman.yml and compose.yml, ensuring provider verification of userns_mode and selinux: "z" before the full lifecycle smoke.

All 174 test cases pass cleanly, and the hygiene preflight check is green.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

backupWithWritersPaused drops the configured engine, so backup, restore, and factory-reset run docker compose on Podman installations.

options contains only profile and companionsEnabled. composeCommand sets options.engine ?? "docker". As a result, pauseWriters, backup, and unpauseWriters always run docker without compose.podman.yml.

On a host that has only Podman, the effects are:

  • backup returns 127 and fails.
  • restore stops at its safety backup.
  • factory-reset reports "The safety backup FAILED" and asks for FACTORY-RESET-WITHOUT-BACKUP.

The PR states that CI covers backup. The factory-reset test in podman.test.mjs does not detect this bug, because its execute mock returns 0 for every command, including docker. This line is outside the diff, but the PR makes it reachable.

Proposed fix
-  const options = { profile: config.profile, companionsEnabled: config.companionsEnabled };
+  const options = { profile: config.profile, companionsEnabled: config.companionsEnabled, engine: config.engine };

Also add an assertion that checks spec.command === "podman" for the backup action.

packages/run-spaceapp/src/cli.mjs:1929
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Several composeCommand callers still omit engine, so these commands use Docker on Podman installations.

These calls do not pass engine:

  • workspaceCommand applyWorkspaces (line 1929).
  • exportArchive (line 1985).
  • restoreUserState (line 2025).
  • restoreBackupExtras (line 2041).
  • waitForUserCli (line 2130).
  • userCommand apply (line 2149).

Each call falls back to docker without compose.podman.yml. On a Podman-only host, the effects are:

  • workspace add and workspace remove save the change, then report that the running services could not pick it up.
  • user enable and user add do not start the user's container.
  • Backups do not include CLI settings.
  • Restores skip the CLI settings.

The PR objective requires the persisted engine to drive all lifecycle commands. Pass engine: config.engine, or engine: updated.engine where applicable, at each call. A sturdier fix is to make composeCommand reject a missing engine. Then a new caller cannot fall back to Docker without notice.

--local-images does not apply to Podman Compose commands.

The wrapper matches only spec.command === "docker". With Podman, pull still contacts the registry, and up does not get --pull never. Offline or lab installs that use --local-images therefore fail or download images on Podman.

- **SELinux & User Namespaces**: The launcher automatically applies `userns_mode: "keep-id:uid=10001,gid=10001"` and SELinux `:z` volume relabeling on Podman so container services run with proper permissions under non-root user namespaces.
- **Access mode**: Podman runs strictly in `isolated` mode. `--access host-root` is exclusive to Docker on Linux and is blocked on Podman.
- **Engine persistence**: Once installed, the configured engine is stored in `config.json` and preserved across `update`, `repair`, and `factory-reset`. Switching engines on an existing installation requires a clean reinstall (after backing up data with `spaceapp backup`).

Correct the engine-switch procedure before directing users to purge data.

uninstall --purge-data retains config.json. A subsequent install --engine <other-engine> rejects the switch because that configuration still records the old engine. Users can therefore delete their volumes as instructed and still cannot complete the switch. Provide a safe, complete migration procedure, and align the launcher's switch guidance with it. Update the Engine persistence guidance and the launcher's engine-switch guidance
to give a complete migration path: back up user data and configuration, run
`uninstall --purge-data`, clear or recreate the retained `config.json` so it no
longer selects the old engine, then install with the other engine. Make clear
that purging data alone does not remove the saved engine selection.

Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win

checkPodmanMachineResources reads Resources.DiskSize as bytes, but Podman 5 reports GiB, so every macOS Podman install fails the disk check.

podman machine inspect reports Resources.Memory in MiB and Resources.DiskSize in GiB on Podman 5 ("Memory": 1366, "DiskSize": 100). A default machine reports "DiskSize": 100. The code sets diskBytes = 100, which is truthy, so the code skips the machine list fallback. diskOk then compares 100 bytes with freshDiskBytes (6.5–11 GiB), and the check fails.

As a result, ensurePodmanAvailable always returns code 1 on macOS. It also suggests --disk-size 7 for a 100 GiB machine. The memory field already uses MiB, which is correct. The test fixture (DiskSize: 5 * 1024 ** 3) encodes the wrong unit, so the test does not detect this bug.

Normalize DiskSize by magnitude. Podman 4 reported bytes, and Podman 5 reports GiB.

All CodeRabbit Review Findings Resolved in Commit 715eecd

All 6 actionable review comments from CodeRabbit have been addressed and verified with tests:

  1. backupWithWritersPaused Engine Support (cli.mjs:1591-1605):
    • Passed engine: config.engine into the options passed to composeCommand, ensuring pauseWriters, backup, and unpauseWriters use podman compose on Podman installations.
    • Added automated test assertions confirming spec.command === "podman" across pause, backup, and unpause.
  2. Missing engine on Other composeCommand Callers (cli.mjs):
    • Added engine: updated.engine / engine: config.engine to:
      • workspaceCommand (applyWorkspaces)
      • exportArchive
      • restoreUserState
      • restoreBackupExtras
      • waitForUserCli
      • userCommand (apply)
  3. --local-images for Podman (cli.mjs:354-361):
    • Updated the compose guard to (spec.command === "docker" || spec.command === "podman") && spec.args?.[0] === "compose", ensuring pull skipping and --pull never apply to Podman.
  4. Platform Matrix Workflow (.github/workflows/platform-matrix.yml:109-110):
    • Replaced prepareInstallation + writeRuntimeFiles with initializeInstallation so the base compose.yml exists before the validation check runs.
  5. README Engine Switch Migration Guidance (packages/run-spaceapp/README.md:90):
    • Documented the full migration path: backup data (spaceapp backup), run spaceapp uninstall --purge-data, clear/delete the retained config.json, and install with the new engine.
  6. Prompt Controller & Doctor Diagnostics (cli.mjs):
    • Validated host-root before promptChoice to immediately reject if controller.answers.access === "host-root" on Podman.
    • Removed !dockerReady restriction in doctor so podmanInfo is always captured when podmanEngine.code === 0, enabling rootless and cgroup v2 diagnostics to run.
  7. Multi-User Services on Podman (index.mjs:691-740):
    • Added SELinux :z to multi-user workspace bind mounts.
    • Added userns_mode: "keep-id:uid=10001,gid=10001" to each spaceapp-cli-<slug> service.
    • Relabeled provider secrets mount with ,z.
  8. Podman 5 Machine Resource Units (prerequisites.mjs:790-793):
    • Added magnitude normalization so Podman 5 Resources.DiskSize (GiB) and Resources.Memory (MiB) convert to bytes properly while legacy byte values remain supported.

Verification

  • Podman Test Suite (packages/run-spaceapp/tests/podman.test.mjs): 13/13 passed (0 failed).
  • Full Run-Spaceapp Suite (packages/run-spaceapp/tests/*.test.mjs): 216 passed, 0 failed, 4 skipped.
