feat(run-spaceapp): support rootless Podman engine (closes #63) - #301
The launcher now supports rootless Podman on Linux and Podman machine on macOS while retaining Docker as the default for existing installations.
Add install --engine docker|podman, persist the selection, accept engine through --answers, and detect native Podman when Docker is absent or provided by the podman-docker shim.
Route lifecycle commands, checkpoints, recovery, backups, credentials, providers and owner commands through the saved engine. Preserve literal executable dispatch and pin podman compose to the docker-compose v2 provider. Strip inherited Docker endpoints/contexts from Podman execution.
Refuse engine switches and Podman --access host-root before installation changes. Legacy configurations continue to use Docker.
Check Podman >=5, Docker Compose v2 >=2.20, API socket availability, rootless mode, cgroup v2 and CPU/memory delegation. Include sanitized engine facts in doctor and support bundles. Check Podman machine capacity, including automatic profile selection and maintenance disk headroom.
Use consistent keep-id mappings for application services and shared SELinux labels for workspace, credential, backup and secret binds. Preserve read-only mounts and host ownership.
Add engine, command, safety and machine regression tests; document setup and limits in all three requested guides; add an Ubuntu CI job for small-profile installation, readiness, backup, purge and cleanup verification.
Validation
Executed with Node 22.23.0:
ELECTRON_SKIP_BINARY_DOWNLOAD=1 npm ci — passed.
npm test -w run-spaceapp — passed, 250 tests.
npm run check -w run-spaceapp — passed.
npm run check — passed.
npm run build — passed.
npm run hygiene:preflight — passed.
Targeted ESLint — no errors; 14 existing warnings in launcher code.
Package dry run, workflow YAML parsing, CI shell syntax and git diff --check — passed.
Official Docker Compose 2.20.0, verified against its release checksum: config --quiet and normalized configuration assertions passed all 12 combinations of Docker/Podman, small/medium/large and single-user/multi-user workspaces.
Most API failures and the worker failure report spawn sqlite3 ENOENT / spawnSync sqlite3 ENOENT. Additional failures concern browser bookmarks, signed-link embedding expectations, LivePane audio settings and MaintenanceHub scheduling. These application files were not changed by this PR.
Neither Docker nor Podman is installed in the implementation environment. Live Linux small/medium/large stack runs, SELinux enforcing ownership checks, macOS Podman machine execution and the new CI job have not been executed here. The Compose parsing checks do not substitute for those runtime proofs.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added support for rootless Podman as an alternative container engine, while keeping Docker as the default.
The installer can detect or accept an engine choice, checks engine-specific requirements, and saves the selection for future operations.
Diagnostics, resource checks, and storage reporting now reflect the selected engine.
Added guidance for Podman setup, platform requirements, workspace access, and engine limitations.
Bug Fixes
Prevented unsupported engine changes for existing installations and disallowed Podman with host-root access.
The launcher now supports Docker and rootless Podman on Linux, and Podman machine on macOS. It saves the selected engine, routes installation and later commands through it, adds engine-specific checks and Compose rendering, and documents the supported setup.
Changes: Rootless Podman engine support
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Engine selection and inspection packages/run-spaceapp/src/engines.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/src/index.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/tests/engines.test.mjs
Engine detection and inspection cover Docker and Podman. Configuration accepts an engine and applies engine-specific resource checks and access-mode validation.
Compose rendering and storage checks packages/run-spaceapp/src/index.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/src/storage.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/tests/podman-compose.test.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/tests/storage.test.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/package.json
Compose generation adds Podman namespace mappings and SELinux labels, and renders file secrets as bind mounts. Storage probes use the selected engine. Tests cover Compose behavior and storage checks; the check script adds a syntax check for engines.mjs.
CLI selection and lifecycle routing packages/run-spaceapp/src/cli.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/tests/podman-cli.test.mjs, packages/run-spaceapp/tests/podman-machine-cli.test.mjs
The CLI accepts and saves the engine choice, checks engine prerequisites, and passes the saved configuration to lifecycle commands. Diagnostics and messages identify the selected engine. Tests cover command routing, engine selection, update recovery, and macOS Podman machine setup.
Podman guidance and CI validation README.md, docs/getting-started.md, packages/run-spaceapp/README.md, .github/workflows/platform-matrix.yml
Documentation describes Podman setup, requirements, workspace behavior, diagnostics, and platform limits. The platform matrix adds Podman installation, readiness, backup, and cleanup checks.

Podman installs would be refused on hosts with a current docker-compose release, and the CI job meant to validate Podman support cannot start as written. Fix the workflow environment definition and the Compose version gate before merging; Docker behavior is unaffected.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #63 is the only active direct target. Its coding requirements are implemented at the reviewed head, based on the PR summary and file-level change summaries:
Engine selection [#63]: install --engine docker|podman is added. The choice persists in the configuration, is accepted through --answers, and is read by later commands. Native Podman is detected when Docker is absent or only the podman-docker shim is present (engines.mjs, cli.mjs). Legacy configurations default to Docker.
Compose [#63]: Podman commands set PODMAN_COMPOSE_PROVIDER=docker-compose. Provider versions are checked (Podman >=5, Compose v2 >=2.20). The template is unchanged for Docker. Compose parsing checks pass for 12 combinations.
Linux rootless checks [#63]: Podman version, socket availability, rootless mode, cgroup v2, and CPU/memory delegation are checked in inspectEngine.
Mounts [#63]: keep-id user-namespace mappings and SELinux labels are added for workspace, credential, backup, and secret binds. Read-only mounts are kept.
macOS [#63]: Podman machine state and profile CPU, memory, and disk requirements are checked. Resize guidance is printed. Automatic profile selection is tested.
Doctor and support bundle [#63]: Sanitized engine facts (engine, version, rootful or rootless, cgroup version, delegation) are included.
Data safety [#63]: Engine switches on existing installations are refused before installation changes. Podman with --access host-root is refused.
Command dispatch [#63]: Lifecycle, checkpoint, backup, restore, credentials, provider, and owner commands receive the saved engine. Podman execution strips inherited DOCKER_HOST and DOCKER_CONTEXT.
Tests [#63]: engines.test.mjs, podman-cli.test.mjs, podman-compose.test.mjs, podman-machine-cli.test.mjs, and storage.test.mjs cover engine detection, command construction, and both engines. The 250 launcher tests pass.
CI [#63]: A podman job is added to platform-matrix.yml. It installs the small profile, checks readiness, runs backup, uninstalls with purge, and runs cleanup checks.
Docs [#63]: The launcher README, main README, and docs/getting-started.md describe Podman support and its limits.
Residual uncertainty: Runtime behavior is not established by this review. The PR reports that no live Linux stack run, SELinux enforcing ownership check, macOS Podman machine run, or CI job run was executed. The summary does not show runtime results for small, medium, or large profiles. The verdict covers coding implementation and automated tests. It does not confirm runtime correctness.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Every changed area maps to an objective in #63 or supports one:
Windows headless Docker configuration applied only to Docker commands (cli.mjs). This follows from engine-specific dispatch [#63].
Workspace access hints skipped for Podman (cli.mjs). This follows from the Podman workspace-label behavior [#63].
package.jsoncheck script adds node --check on src/engines.mjs. This supports the new module [#63].
Tests for engines, CLI, Compose, machine behavior, and storage [#63].
CI job in platform-matrix.yml [#63].
Documentation in three requested guides [#63].
The host-root FAQ and README text are limited to Linux with Docker. This matches the refusal requirement in #63. No change was found that lacks a connection to #63. The application areas named in the broader test failures (bookmarks, signed links, LivePane, MaintenanceHub) are not listed as changed files in the summary.

Remove runner.temp from the job-level env.
GitHub Actions does not permit the runner context in jobs.<job_id>.env. This expression makes the workflow invalid before the Podman job can start. Set SPACEAPP_HOME from an allowed job-level context, or initialize it in a step and account for cleanup if that step does not run. (docs.github.com)

Increase resources in the machine resize example.
The example repeats the initialization values from Lines 94-95. If that machine lacks capacity for a larger profile, this command does not increase its CPU, memory, or disk allocation. Show larger values, such as --cpus 8 --memory 16384 --disk-size 40, or tell readers to choose values above their current allocation. Podman permits disk-size increases, not decreases. (docs.podman.io)

Fix the Compose version gate. It rejects every current Docker Compose release.
The check requires composeMajor === 2. Docker Compose advanced the versioning directly to v5 and the supported Docker Compose CLI versions are Compose v2 and Compose v5. Compose v5, released in 2025, is functionally identical to Compose v2. Releases after 2.40.3 are all 5.x. A host with an up-to-date docker-compose fails the "Podman Compose" check and install, doctor and update exit with code 1.
Accept any major version greater than 2, and keep the 2.20 minimum for v2. NaN from a missing version still fails.
Update the same wording in podmanInstallHelp (Line 64), the Podman Compose detail text, and the launcher help in cli.mjs (Line 2896: "docker-compose v2 >=2.20"). Also update the README and docs strings in this PR that name "v2".
‼️IMPORTANT
Carefully review the code before committing. Ensure that it accurately replaces the highlighted code, contains no missing lines, and has no issues with indentation. Thoroughly test & benchmark the code to ensure it meets the requirements.

Append the delegation advice to each failing check.
checks.at(-1) is always the "Memory limit delegation" check. If only the CPU controller is missing, the memory check passes. The advice is then appended to a PASS line. The failing "CPU limit delegation" entry in errors has no remediation text.
Append the text to every check that failed.
