feat(operator,chart): resolve S3 store identity and configure PageBroker's S3 backend - #663
The operator computes the S3 store ID from storage.yaml's raw connection fields (storage.S3.StoreID, added by #662 and now carried in #492) and writes it into a ConfigMap PageBroker mounts at --storage-config, matching #416's s3_config.cpp schema exactly: PageBroker trusts storeId as a literal field rather than deriving it, unlike the PVC backend's ComputeStoreID.
The chart drops its pvc-only guard, renders storage.type=s3, and wires S3 credentials via storage.s3.credentialsSecretRef: one Secret, mounted as a shared credentials file into PageBroker and the operator alike. Along the way this fixes several places that unconditionally referenced the PVC checkpoints volume/mount (PageBroker's volumeMounts, the operator Deployment's volumeMounts and volumes) and would otherwise have broken an S3-only install.
This does not touch agent/pagebroker/ (C++): PageBroker's S3 engine lands independently via #264's stack.
Base is #492. #662 (the S3 identity type) was merged into that branch, so this PR's diff is only the operator and chart work.
Does this PR introduce an API change?

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Snapshot storage now supports S3 alongside PVC, with configurable endpoint, region, bucket, and optional prefix.
S3 deployments can provide credentials through a Kubernetes Secret and select the key containing the credentials file. Required S3 settings are validated during setup.
S3 configuration is provided to PageBroker automatically, and S3 deployments do not require a checkpoint PVC.
S3 artifact cleanup supports configured credentials and an optional CA bundle.
Documentation
Storage guidance now covers S3 settings, endpoint formatting, credential requirements, and the expected credentials file format.

Full details: Breaking Api Changes
Explanation
No breaking Kubernetes API change is introduced. The only existing exported field area changed is api/storage.Config, where the existing PVC field and tags remain unchanged; the new S3 pointer is omitempty and belongs to storage.yaml, not a stored CR. api/v1alpha1 has no diff, and the PodSnapshot and PodSnapshotContent immutability markers are unchanged. The new S3 fields are part of a new file-configuration type, so CRD optional/default markers do not apply.

Reviewed against upstream/main with this branch checked out (on top of #662), and with the chart rendered through helm template.
Three of these look blocking for an S3 install: the RBAC rule never grants create, the operator exits at startup before any of the new code runs, and --storage-config is passed twice in a configuration the chart actively requires. The rest are design and robustness points. Details inline.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
No owner reference and no snapshot.labels on an object the chart's DaemonSet hard-depends on: it survives helm uninstall, is invisible to helm diff, and nothing ties it back to the release. Chart labels at minimum.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Partially — added chart-identifying labels. Skipped the ownerReference: it'd need the operator to look up its own Deployment, which is more plumbing than this PR's scope. Left as a known gap.

Do not render the S3 DaemonSet with the current PageBroker image.
For storage.type=s3, the chart passes --storage-config /etc/snapshot-s3/pagebroker-s3-config.json. main.cpp calls ParseDaemonOptions before RunDaemon, and the parser throws std::invalid_argument for this unknown option. PageBroker exits before serving requests.
Add an explicit S3 chart gate until PageBroker implements this option, or ship the required parser and S3 backend support in the same rollout.

Second pass, reviewed against the fixed code at d23f791b (all nine from the first round confirmed fixed — thanks, the RBAC split and the equal-on-full-args test are exactly right).
Five new findings. Being explicit about where they came from, since three of them arrived with the fixes rather than surviving them:
C, D and E were introduced by 815cc637 and 1f917d2a — the commits that fixed my points 7, 6 and 3. They could not have been addressed earlier; they didn't exist yet.
B is half original (ec673493) and half added by the point-2 fix.
A isn't authored by this PR at all (git log -S traces it to fc349012c) — but this PR is what makes it reachable, by lifting the fail guard. That one is a miss from my first pass, not a regression on your side.
One framing note on CI: all 14 checks are green, but nothing in e2e/ or hack/ sets storage.type=s3, so every check ran the PVC path. Green here doesn't exercise any of the below.
A blocks an S3 install outright; B is a silent data-addressing bug; C is a deferred landmine; D/E are consistency cleanups. Details inline.

Update the operator-managed ConfigMap when S3 settings change.
If a Helm upgrade changes only storage.s3.endpoint, region, bucket, or prefix, the operator Deployment pod template stays unchanged. Kubernetes therefore does not restart the manager. The manager calls ensurePageBrokerS3Config only at startup, so the PageBroker ConfigMap and the operator’s store ID retain the old store settings. New work can continue against the old store after the upgrade. Reconcile S3 configuration changes, or roll the operator when these values change; also coordinate the PageBroker rollout. S3 store IDs hash endpoint, region, bucket and prefix, matching the
PVC identity's length-prefixed encoding. PageBroker does not compute
this itself for S3 (unlike PVC's ComputeStoreID): #416 reads storeId
as a literal config field, so there is no cross-language parity
vector to pin here, unlike testdata/identity.json for PVC.

…torage-config arg
Three bugs made the S3 path non-functional as written: the RBAC rule
never actually granted create (resourceNames cannot scope a
top-level create, so get/create/update in one rule silently drops
create), the operator hard-exited at startup because
ArtifactCleanupConfig.S3 was never populated from storage.S3 even
though the chart's own --artifact-cleanup-backend-type=s3 made that
path reachable, and --storage-config was passed twice whenever
artifactAddressing and storage.type=s3 were both set - exactly the
combination binding new S3 content requires.
Also: a shared _helpers.tpl define replaces five independent
spellings of the PageBroker S3 ConfigMap name, the ConfigMap now
carries chart-identifying labels (no ownerReference - the operator
would need a lookup of its own Deployment it does not otherwise
need), the two S3 config flags fall back to POD_NAMESPACE and a
named constant instead of being unconditionally mandatory, and
values.yaml documents that storage.s3.credentialsSecretRef does not
configure the operator's own S3 maintenance backend, which
authenticates separately via a credentials file.

Traced PageBroker's Broker constructor: storage_root is only read in
the legacy (non-S3) construction branch. When the S3 config is
present, that branch never runs, so the placeholder path is
genuinely inert, not an open question.

…nt, PageBroker and operator
Collapses the two credential fields (an env-var Secret for
agent/PageBroker, a separate file-mounted Secret for the operator's
maintenance backend) into one: storage.s3.credentialsSecretRef, a
Secret holding a shared credentials file, mounted at the same path
in all three containers.
The operator already re-reads this file every 5 minutes
(operator/internal/maintenance/backends/s3.go); PageBroker currently
resolves credentials once at startup via the AWS SDK's default
credential chain, which this file satisfies through the standard
AWS_SHARED_CREDENTIALS_FILE env var the chain already honors - no
PageBroker-side change needed for it to read this file today, only
for it to re-read it on rotation.
Signed-off-by: Oleg Kushniriov <okushniriov@nvidia.com>
The agent never reads storage credentials; only PageBroker and the
operator do. Mounting the shared credentials file and setting
AWS_SHARED_CREDENTIALS_FILE in the agent container was dead config.
Also trims two review-flagged comments down to the fact they state,
dropping the restated rationale.

notContains without any:true only fails on an exact full-object match,

…ntity
Pin configmap.yaml's config.yaml storage block to pvc regardless of
storage.type; the agent has no S3 awareness and was crash-looping on
every node under storage.type=s3.
Normalize the S3 prefix in configuredStoreID before hashing so
ensurePageBrokerS3Config and the maintenance backend read the same
key space the store ID was derived from, instead of a raw prefix that
can differ while hashing identically.
Label the operator-written PageBroker S3 config ConfigMap
managed-by=snapshot-operator instead of Helm, since Helm does not
manage this object.
Move the credentialsSecretRef required() check into configmap.yaml
and simplify the now-unreachable truthiness guards in daemonset.yaml
to a plain storage.type check; fix two stale comments claiming the
agent receives the S3 credentials file.
Scope the bindNewContents guard to pvc only so S3 installs can enable
it without pageBroker.artifactAddressing.

validateBucket accepts dotted bucket names. Such names cannot use AWS wildcard certificates for virtual-hosted-style HTTPS addressing. The validator does not select an addressing mode, so this is a misleading guarantee, not an established runtime failure in this PR.

NormalizedEndpoint checked parsed.Host for emptiness, which a URL like
"http://:9000" passes despite having no hostname to contact -- Host
includes a bare port. It also hashed an explicit default port
("https://...:443") differently from its implicit form, so adding a
redundant default port to an already-deployed endpoint silently
changes the store ID an existing deployment's content is bound to.
Decompose the URL via Hostname()/Port() instead of Host, reject an
empty hostname, and drop the scheme's default port before hashing.
