- Around line 209-215: Update the published artifact handle validation in the
code around `requested` and `normalized` to require exactly the
`artifacts/<uid>/containers/<name>` layout. Validate each component with
`IsSafePathComponent`, then recompute the commit ID with `ComputeCommitID` and
reject the publication if it differs from `publication.commit_id`.
- Around line 95-101: Update WritePublication and the artifact publication flow
to make the rename durable: fsync every copied payload file and
publication.json, then fsync the partial directory before renaming; after the
rename, fsync the parent directory. Apply the same ordering to the other
publication path using fs::copy and rename.
- Around line 168-193: Add recovery for stale paths in the publish flow using
`PartialPath`, `PreviousPath`, and `RestorePreviousOnFailure`: preserve an
existing partial and return `TRANSACTION_CONFLICT` rather than copying over or
deleting it, and restore `previous` to `published` when the published target is
absent. When both exist, safely resolve the stale previous path before starting
the rename shuffle so republishing can proceed without discarding recoverable
data.
Review comments at @agent/pagebroker/artifact_store.hpp:
- Around line 60-66: Update the `PublishCheckpoint` header comment to state that
publication copies the staging directory’s contents and leaves staging-directory
cleanup to the caller; remove the claim that the directory is consumed or absent
after success.
Review comments at @agent/pagebroker/broker.cpp:
- Around line 811-836: Serialize concurrent PublishCheckpoint calls in
PVCArtifactStore with a mutex keyed by the target artifact path, ensuring
attempts for the same (uid, container) cannot overlap while unrelated targets
remain independent. Apply the lock across partial and previous path operations;
keep Broker::PublishArtifactCheckpoint’s transaction handling unchanged.
Review comments at @agent/pagebroker/checkpoint_transaction_descriptor.cpp:
- Around line 17-56: Update PrepareDirectCheckpoint in broker.cpp to check that
an existing descriptor is not artifact-addressed with is_artifact_addressed()
before calling engine_type(). Treat an artifact-addressed descriptor as a
transaction conflict rather than allowing destination_storage() or engine_type()
to throw.
Review comments at @agent/pagebroker/identity_test.cpp:
- Around line 16-27: Update ReadFixtures in identity_test.cpp so it does not
rely on the test process’s current directory, and ensure the fixture used by
this test stays byte-for-byte synchronized with
api/storage/testdata/identity.json, using a symlink or an existing CI comparison
check.
Review comments at @agent/pagebroker/identity.cpp:
- Around line 229-231: Update whitespace validation in NormalizeBasePath to
reject leading and trailing Unicode whitespace using the same rule as Go’s
PVC.NormalizedBasePath, rather than checking only ASCII spaces and tabs. Ensure
this validation occurs before hashing so both implementations produce consistent
acceptance and store IDs.
Review comments at @agent/pagebroker/main.cpp:
- Around line 24-49: Update ResolveStoreID so failures to open or parse an
explicitly supplied storage config, and failures from ComputeStoreID, propagate
as std::invalid_argument for main to handle instead of returning an empty ID.
Preserve the empty-ID fallback for unsupported config types.
Review comments at @agent/pagebroker/storage_config.cpp:
- Around line 22-32: Update Unquote in storage_config.cpp to reject values
containing a backslash after removing matching surrounding quotes, rather than
returning escaped content as a valid scalar. Preserve the existing handling of
quoted and bare values otherwise, and make the rejection explicit.
Review comments at @docs/operations/storage.md:
- Line 127: Update the PageBroker lifetime description to say expired entries
are cleaned up by the periodic two-minute ReapExpiredTransactions sweep,
independently of requests, and note that cleanup may be deferred while a GPU
operation is running or retried after cleanup fails.

Document the request-path expiry response.
Broker::Commit returns TRANSACTION_EXPIRED when it receives a Commit for an expired transaction that remains registered (agent/pagebroker/broker.cpp:775-812). The two-minute reaper is a separate cleanup path. Document the Commit response and its condition for clients.

Implements artifact-addressed checkpoint, restore and metadata retrieval in broker.cpp, replacing the INVALID_REQUEST throws with real dispatch over the existing artifacts/<contentUID>/containers/<name>/ layout — not a new on-disk scheme, so #474's maintenance and legacy restore are unchanged. PVCArtifactStore publishes a checkpoint atomically (copy into a partial path, then the same partial/previous/published rename dance the legacy PosixCopyEngine already uses, since staging on tmpfs and the PVC are different filesystems and cannot be renamed across) and writes a publication.json evidence sidecar recording the store ID, artifact handle and deterministic commitID next to manifest.yaml. Restore and GetArtifactMetadata resolve and verify that evidence, mapping failures to STORE_MISMATCH, ARTIFACT_NOT_FOUND, ARTIFACT_CORRUPT and UNSUPPORTED_ARTIFACT rather than collapsing them into STORAGE_ERROR. identity.cpp computes StoreID/CommitID with a self-contained SHA-256, matching api/storage/identity.go's length-prefixed preimage encoding field for field; identity_test.cpp checks it against the same vectors the Go side uses (api/storage/testdata/identity.json). main.cpp parses the sidecar's existing --storage-config argument (added by #492) and resolves the configured store at startup; storage_config.cpp is a parser for exactly that fixed YAML shape, not a general YAML dependency added for four string fields. … contract A PVC publication is the directory itself, its relative path is the handle, and storeID is the only derived identity. Drop publication.json, the commit ID and the format version: the base already removed artifact_format_version from PublishedArtifact and CommitID from the Go contract, so the C++ no longer compiled against it and the identity test read commit vectors that no longer exist. - Refuse a target whose fixed path is already published or still being published, at Prepare and again at Commit, with TRANSACTION_CONFLICT; never replace a publication. - Keep the PublishedArtifact on the transaction so a retried Commit replays the same descriptor instead of a bare success. - fsync every file and directory of the copied tree before the rename and the parent directory after it. - Report an unreachable or unreadable store as STORAGE_UNAVAILABLE or ACCESS_DENIED, never as a missing publication. - Refuse an explicit I/O engine the store cannot serve on artifact requests. - Mirror the Go ValidateArtifactIdentity rules, including UTF-8, Unicode whitespace and control characters, for targets, handles and the PVC base path. - Exit with INVALID_ARGUMENTS when --storage-config cannot be read, parsed or resolved instead of serving against no store. - Check is_artifact_addressed() before reading engine_type() on a direct-prepare retry. - Describe the two-minute expiry sweep and the no-index layout in the storage doc. Signed-off-by: Oleg Kushniriov <okushniriov@nvidia.com>
…he store by block Create the partial directory exclusively, so two publications of one target cannot share it, and map a rename onto an existing target to TRANSACTION_CONFLICT. Fsync the two directories above containers/ after the rename as well, so a publication path created by this publish survives a crash. Select the storage backend from the block present in storage.yaml. The chart stopped rendering a type key, so PageBroker refused its own configuration at startup; a pvc block now selects the PVC store, and an s3 block or two blocks is a configuration error. Closing: this PR wired PVC's own store-identity resolution into PageBroker (storage_config.hpp, --storage-config, ComputeStoreID). We're taking S3 support in a different direction that doesn't need it — the operator computes and hands PageBroker a pre-resolved store ID instead of PageBroker deriving its own (see #662/#663). Plain PVC checkpoint/restore already works on main without this; only PVC's bound/artifact-addressed capture path needed it, and nothing currently depends on that landing. |
What this PR does / why we need it
Implement the PageBroker PVC artifact-storage backend so artifact-addressed checkpoint, restore and metadata requests resolve real storage instead of returning "not implemented". PageBroker parses the chart's
--storage-configargument, derives the store identity from it at startup, publishes each checkpoint at the fixed pathartifacts/<contentUID>/containers/<name>/, and validates the store binding and the handle on every restore and metadata read.The backend follows SNEP-237 as merged. A PVC publication has no index file: the directory is the publication and its relative path is the handle;
storeIDis the only derived identity. The fixed path holds exactly one publication per content and container, so a target that is already published or still being published is refused at Prepare and again at Commit (TRANSACTION_CONFLICT) and left untouched, and a retriedCommiton the same transaction returns the samePublishedArtifactwithout publishing again.Publication copies the staged image across the tmpfs/PVC boundary into a partial directory, fsyncs it, and renames it into place. An unreachable or unreadable store reports
STORAGE_UNAVAILABLEorACCESS_DENIED, never a missing publication; an explicit I/O engine the store cannot serve is refused. The C++ store-ID computation and artifact identity validation mirror the Go contract, including its UTF-8 and Unicode whitespace rules, and the shared test vectors pin the store-ID encoding. A--storage-configthat cannot be read, parsed or resolved stops the daemon withINVALID_ARGUMENTSinstead of serving against no store.Which issue(s) this PR addresses
Part of #237.
How was this tested?
make testinside the PageBroker image build stage: 76 PageBroker tests across the store, broker, identity, storage-config and wire-contract suites, plus the GPU engine, NIXL transfer and storage manifest tests, all pass. Run locally on linux/arm64; the amd64 CI image build also links the GPU test binaries.Special notes for your reviewer
Based on #492 (
feat/pvc-restore), which provides the chart configuration. The lifecycle tests in #493 follow this backend and, once it is below them, drop the temporary rollout switches so PageBroker always receives the store configuration. The second commit aligns the backend with the merged SNEP and with the base, which had already dropped
artifact_format_versionfromPublishedArtifactandCommitIDfrom the Go contract; the first commit predates both and no longer compiled against the base, which is what made thepagebroker-imagecheck red.Not in this PR, tracked as follow-ups: direct restore and direct GPU output for bound PVC content.
Replaces #496 on the same branch. During the stack reorder, pushing before updating PR bases caused GitHub to mark #496 merged into the lifecycle branch. This replacement keeps the backend independently reviewable against #492; that event did not merge the backend into
main.Does this PR introduce an API change?
