Summary

  • Add POST /api/v1/ingest/csv/diagnostic so a supplier CSV/XLSX can be checked before ingestion. Existing webhooks.ingest permission and principal-bound tenant checks precede application file processing. The canonical parser returns sanitized, row-associated issues, including transformation-input and lot-code warnings. No events are persisted. More than 500 records, incomplete worksheet scans, and false worksheet dimensions cannot silently hide data.
  • Semantic review defaults off. Explicit opt-in sends allowlisted aggregates for at most eight issue groups; provider failure preserves deterministic findings. Uploaded values, arbitrary headers, filenames, tenant identifiers, and raw validation messages are excluded. Automatic owner assignment stays disabled, regulatory completeness is undetermined, and the shared Jev 1.14.0 default is unchanged.
  • Add opt-in raw Jev response validation, conservative evidence policies, and a bounded evaluation runner. The runner validates expectations before sending, reserves budget before each request, rejects redirects, saves allowlisted response evidence after processing failures, and prevents automatic resend of completed or ambiguous requests.
  • Register the diagnostic's exact tenant-bound security policy. Extend multipart tenant probes and mounted-router coverage for FastAPI 0.141. The existing 55-product browser fixture now honors the API's 30/minute mutation limit with one retry after an explicit 429; assertions and production limits are preserved.

Type of Change

  • New feature
  • Enhancement to existing feature
  • Refactor (no behavior change)
  • Documentation
  • CI/CD or infrastructure
  • Security fix

Test Plan

  • Unit tests added/updated
  • Integration tests pass: local TestClient routes/parser and isolated CI services
  • Manual testing performed
  • N/A (docs, config, etc.)

Lead-agent focused runs:

  • Parser regression suites: 226 passed.
  • Security matrix, staging runner, and route manifest: 66 passed.
  • Jev policy/evaluator: 77 passed.
  • Mounted router, diagnostic, and XLSX on pinned FastAPI 0.141.1: 173 passed.
  • Canonical manifest: 259 enabled operations; 180 omitted operations returned exact 404.
  • Chromium CI on cd2c8e5: 23 passed, 2 skipped. Required CI must pass again on the current head.

These suites overlap. Regressions reproduced the worksheet omission, dropped warning, missing response-evidence, and lazy-router traversal defects before their corrections. Negative paths cover malformed answers, unauthorized/cross-tenant requests, replay, upload privacy, parser limits, unavailable providers, and budget safeguards.

Independent coding-agent source reviews, pre-commit, Gitleaks, scoped TruffleHog, and diff checks passed. No Muse was used for the replacement/final reviews. The frozen 136-request evaluation yielded 133 contract-valid responses and three rejections; corrections made no additional live requests. Automatic routing remains unapproved.

Non-required findings remain visible: Copy gate fails on inherited frontend source/baseline objects identical to the pinned base; Engine Review Pass expects a posted different-engine marker. No marker was fabricated, check bypassed, or unrelated marketing source changed. Production deployment, production authentication infrastructure, and customer files were not tested.

Note

Medium Risk
Introduces a new tenant-scoped file-upload API with optional external model calls on ingestion-adjacent data, though persistence, assignment, and PII echo are explicitly blocked and heavily tested.

Overview
Adds POST /api/v1/ingest/csv/diagnostic, a tenant-scoped, non-persistent preview that runs the same CSV/XLSX parser as production and returns grouped parser issues with record indices, fixed “no ingest / no assignment / not complete” fields, and a 500-record cap (413 beyond that). XLSX conversion gains strict scan limits and dimension reset so sparse or mis-declared sheets cannot bypass limits or return partial scans.

Optional semantic_review sends aggregate-only state for up to eight issue clusters through new Jev Mode A policy code, with strict raw JSON answer validation (opt-in on ask/ask_async) while legacy advisory Jev behavior stays unchanged. Parser paths now log row dispositions for lot-code and transformation input warnings (surfaced in the preview) and strip uploaded values from parser/validator logs and many error responses.

Security inventory registers the route with none:credential-bound-tenant-preview and a no-persistence test adapter; tenant-isolation matrix probes multipart tenant_id. A capped jev_review_eval.py runner and engineering doc capture evaluation boundaries without approving auto-routing.

E2E product fixture helpers retry once on HTTP 429 and extend timeout for bulk create/delete tests.

Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 9531a88. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.

Add strict raw Jev response validation, frozen evidence policies, a capped evaluation runner, and an authenticated tenant-bound CSV/XLSX preview with aggregate-only semantic opt-in. Keep automatic owner assignment disabled. Reject incomplete sparse-workbook scans and omit uploaded values from parser/model warnings.

Validation: 539 focused tests passed; independent gate PASS; pre-commit, Gitleaks and changed-file/branch TruffleHog checks passed. Muse reached the required eight-step cap without a final verdict. Live evaluation: 136 requests, 133 valid and 3 rejected, synthetic/public evidence only. Separate historical all-ref credential detections remain unverified and outside this change.

Jev sidecar: req_01a186d5dfc170b7bce743a2356ac3b8 (source assignment established: p_yes=0.05; no authority to assign owners).
Ignore declared dimensions on both read-only worksheets during strict diagnostic conversion. This prevents understated metadata from hiding records or bypassing the 500-record limit while preserving existing converter defaults.

Replacement coding-agent review found and independently verified the fix. New regressions reproduced two failures before the correction; 77 relevant parser tests and the independent 160-test review suite pass. Pre-commit, Gitleaks and scoped TruffleHog checks pass. Muse was not used, following the user instruction.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds a tenant-authenticated CSV/XLSX diagnostic preview. The endpoint reports grouped parsing issues and record counts without persisting events or assigning them. Optional semantic review uses strict answer validation and evidence-based summaries. The changes add exact route-security rules, upload and scan limits, and tests for parsing, authorization, response handling, and privacy boundaries. An opt-in evaluator builds and scores model requests with budget, replay, and response checks. Documentation records endpoint behavior, evaluation results, and validation limits. E2E product fixture requests retry once after HTTP 429.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: Low · up to 9531a

The PR is mergeable with awareness of a bounded E2E risk: if fixture requests receive an HTTP-date retry header more than 61 seconds ahead, the one retry may occur too early and fail the test.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 9531a

The new preview is authenticated and read-only, and optional external review receives bounded summaries rather than uploaded values. No material new attack path was established in the inspected code. Live authentication, deployment behavior, and provider retention remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The new remote surface permits authorized ingestion principals to submit files for parsing and optionally trigger bounded external review. It exposes parsing and provider resources, but the inspected handler neither queries another tenant's stored records nor invokes ingestion persistence or assignment.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The route requires webhooks.ingest. Tenant form and header inputs are checked against the authenticated principal before application processing; scoped principals cannot select a different tenant. This establishes application-level ordering, not authorization before framework multipart decoding.
  • observed — Uploaded values, arbitrary headers, filenames, tenant identifiers, and parser messages are not copied into review state. Egress consists of counts, recognized CTE types, allowlisted issue identifiers, and explicitly empty evidence context. Provider answers remain advisory and receive no persistence or assignment capability.
  • observed — The evaluator uses a fixed HTTPS destination and rejects redirects. Its budget and replay controls trust operator-owned local state: recovery checks request hashes, terminal status, and response-file existence, but does not authenticate persisted files or bind changed scoring expectations to a completed evaluation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Application upload reads are capped at 5 MiB. XLSX conversion also checks declared archive expansion, limits columns and scanned rows, and closes both workbook readers in a finally block. Provider unavailability returns no suggestions and leaves deterministic diagnostic results available.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(ingestion): add advisory CSV/XLSX diagnostic preview" matches the main change: a new non-persistent, tenant-scoped POST /api/v1/ingest/csv/diagnostic endpoint that previews parser issues for CSV/XLSX uploads. The title is concise, uses a conventional-commit prefix, and names the primary feature. It omits the optional semantic review and the Jev evaluation tooling, which is acceptable because the title need not cover every detail.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template structure: Summary, Type of Change, Test Plan, Checklist, and Related Issues are all present. Summary bullets explain the diagnostic endpoint, semantic review opt-in, Jev validation and evaluator, and security policy. Type of Change has several boxes checked. Test Plan lists specific runs and reports non-required CI findings. Checklist items are checked, and Related Issues states that no issue is linked. The template's Manual testing box is unchecked, which is acceptable because the author states production and customer-file testing was not performed. Some test-plan claims depend on local runs, but the description is mostly complete.

P2 Badge Preserve parser warnings as sanitized diagnostic issues

For an otherwise valid transformation CSV that supplies input_lot_codes but leaves input quantities and units blank, parse_csv_rows emits an input_quantities missing warning (also covered by test_transformation_without_input_quantities_ingests_with_a_warning). This endpoint discards that warning, and its subsequent _validate_kde_completeness call does not check input quantities, so the missing data never appears in the diagnostic issues or semantic review. Lot-code integrity warnings are similarly lost. Convert these warning conditions into allowlisted, row-associated diagnostic issues rather than dropping them or exposing their raw text.

The tenant_api_key_no_persistence adapter does not verify the no-persistence claim.

The adapter is an alias for _adapt_tenant_api_key_dependency. It checks only that a tenant API-key dependency exists.

The manifest entry declares none:credential-bound-tenant-preview. The adapter name implies a no-persistence check. Other exact-policy adapters, such as tenant_api_key_redis_job_owner, verify their storage claim against the endpoint source.

If someone adds persistence to preview_pilot_diagnostic, the manifest gate still passes with the "none" boundary. Only the runtime tests in test_pilot_diagnostic.py would catch it.

Add a dedicated adapter. It should check that the endpoint belongs to services.ingestion.app.pilot_diagnostic. It should also check that the endpoint source does not reference persistence entry points such as ingest_events or finalize_row_dispositions_from_ingest.

Add an overall deadline to the semantic review loop.

With semantic_review=true, the handler awaits up to MAX_REVIEW_CLUSTERS (8) provider calls in sequence. Each call can use its full retry budget. With the default settings, that budget is 11 s (5 s timeout × (1 retry + 1) + 1 s), so the request can run for about 88 s before it returns. Nothing in the loop caps total time.

Check the deadline before each call, and start a call only while time remains:

🐛 Suggested fix
 MAX_REVIEW_CLUSTERS = 8
+REVIEW_DEADLINE_SECONDS = 30.0
         stop_reason = "cluster_limit"
+        deadline = time.monotonic() + REVIEW_DEADLINE_SECONDS
         for issue in parsed["issues"][:MAX_REVIEW_CLUSTERS]:
+            if time.monotonic() >= deadline:
+ stop_reason = "review_deadline"
+ break
             attempted += 1

Add import time at module level if the module does not already import it.

The check does not stop a call that has already started. A call that begins before the deadline can run its full retry budget. The worst case is therefore about REVIEW_DEADLINE_SECONDS plus 11 s. Remaining clusters are marked unreviewed with the review_deadline reason by the existing tail loop. Enforce an exact end time with asyncio.timeout around the loop only if the response must end at the deadline.

Retry product fixture create/delete once only after an explicit HTTP 429, honoring numeric Retry-After or the existing one-minute rate window. Preserve all 55 pagination records, all assertions, and production limits; allow 240 seconds for this fixture-heavy test.

Validation: focused ESLint, six-test Chromium collection, and fourteen synthetic checks of the actual helper pass. Independent coding-agent review PASS; pre-commit, Gitleaks and scoped TruffleHog pass. Full browser CI remains the runtime acceptance gate.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject XLSX scans with stored cells beyond column 200.

Strict mode resets dimensions, then caps both iterators at column 201. If a row contains valid data in columns A:B and stored data in column 202 while column 201 is blank, the later cell is excluded before cells is built. Trimming removes the blank tail, so the len(cells) > MAX_XLSX_COLUMNS check does not reject the row. The diagnostic preview can therefore return an incomplete result, contrary to the helper’s strict-scan contract. Check the actual worksheet bounds before applying the capped iterator.

Update xlsx_to_csv_text to check the worksheet’s actual bounds for stored cells
beyond column 200 before applying the capped iterator in strict mode, and reject
the scan when any such cells exist. Preserve the existing capped iteration and
row validation for worksheets within the limit.

value to support both numeric delay-seconds and HTTP-date values, converting
dates to a nonnegative delay from the current time. Ensure the resulting wait
fits within the test timeout while preserving the existing retry behavior.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Parse HTTP-date Retry-After values.

If a 429 response specifies a retry date 90 seconds ahead, Number() fails and the helper retries after 61 seconds. The retry can receive another 429 and fail the E2E test. Parse HTTP dates as well as numeric seconds, and account for the test timeout. (rfc-editor.org)

Based on learnings: Retry-After can contain either seconds or an HTTP-date.
