Summary

  • Adds .claude/skills/verify/SKILL.md: the recipe for booting server.main:app in a cloud session with no Docker daemon (local PostgreSQL 16 + Redis, the role layout from scripts/init-postgres.sh, the get_tenant_context() seed Alembic needs, the secrets the lifespan requires, the dev bypass key, and how to drive tenant-bound routes).
  • Un-ignores .claude/skills/verify/ in .gitignore so the recipe ships with the repo, alongside jev-sidecar and typesafe-ai.
  • Written while runtime-verifying the advisory CSV/XLSX diagnostic preview from regengine/RegEngine#3752; the verification report is in the session, not in this PR.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix
  • New feature
  • Enhancement to existing feature
  • Refactor (no behavior change)
  • Documentation
  • CI/CD or infrastructure
  • Security fix

Test Plan

  • Unit tests added/updated
  • Integration tests pass
  • Manual testing performed
  • N/A (docs, config, etc.)

The documented commands were the ones actually used in this session: migrations applied (107 revisions), the monolith booted at /health, and POST /api/v1/ingest/csv/diagnostic was driven with CSV and XLSX uploads plus tenant, size, encoding and method probes.

Checklist

  • My code follows the existing patterns in the codebase
  • I have not introduced hardcoded secrets or credentials
  • If this PR adds a test that uses sys.modules[X] = stub, I justified it in the PR description
  • I have updated relevant documentation (if applicable)
  • My changes generate no new warnings or lint errors

Relates to regengine/RegEngine#3752

Note

Low Risk
Documentation and gitignore-only changes; no application or CI behavior changes.

Overview
Adds a new verify Claude agent skill (.claude/skills/verify/SKILL.md) that documents how to exercise RegEngine at the HTTP layer in a Docker-less cloud session: start local PostgreSQL 16 and Redis, create DB roles aligned with scripts/init-postgres.sh, seed get_tenant_context() before Alembic, generate a scratch verify.env (instead of sourcing .env), run migrations, boot uvicorn server.main:app, and probe tenant routes with the dev API-key bypass and ingestion fixtures.

Updates .gitignore so .claude/skills/verify/ is tracked like the existing typesafe-ai and jev-sidecar skills.

Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 8093d3c. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.

Record how to boot server.main:app in a cloud session without a Docker
daemon: local PostgreSQL 16 and Redis, the role layout from
scripts/init-postgres.sh, the get_tenant_context() seed that Alembic needs,
the secrets the lifespan requires, the dev bypass key, and how to drive
tenant-bound routes. Un-ignore .claude/skills/verify/ so the recipe ships.

Walkthrough

Adds a verify skill guide for running the RegEngine monolith locally without Docker. The guide covers PostgreSQL and Redis setup, environment configuration, migrations, Uvicorn startup, HTTP and tenant checks, Jev troubleshooting, and service shutdown. An exception in .gitignore includes the new skill directory.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "docs(agents): add verify skill with local monolith run recipe" matches the main change. The PR adds a new .claude/skills/verify/SKILL.md guide for running the monolith locally without Docker, and it un-ignores that directory in .gitignore. The title follows a conventional-commit style, is specific, and a teammate scanning history would understand the primary change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has a Summary with bullet points that state what the PR adds and why. The Type of Change section marks Documentation. The Test Plan marks Manual testing performed and explains the commands used. The Checklist is filled in. The Related Issues section links #3752. The description is detailed and specific. Minor gaps: the Checklist marks 'I have not introduced hardcoded secrets' and 'no new warnings or lint errors' without evidence, and the SKILL.md content itself is not in the diff summary. These are non-critical.

CI status on a92778a

  • Engine Review Pass: failing, not fixable by a push. The job requires a REVIEW: PASS <engine> <head-sha> marker from a non-author engine, and this branch's author engine is claude. Its log: "Total reviews retrieved: 0 … No passing review from a non-author engine for current head SHA". CodeRabbit skipped because the PR is a draft. This clears when a reviewer other than Claude posts a pass marker for this head SHA, or when the PR leaves draft and CodeRabbit (or another engine) reviews it.
  • PR Blocker Checklist and Head SHA Check Guard: cancelled, not this PR's. CodeRabbit's draft notice fired an issue_comment run of PR Guards on main's SHA. Both jobs use cancel-in-progress: true keyed only by PR number, so that run cancelled the in-flight jobs on this head. The replacement run is attached to main, not to this head, so the cancelled result stays on the PR. Cause is in .github/workflows/pr-guards.yml concurrency groups, outside this docs-only diff. No fix exists yet; a /rerun of the pull_request run would re-attach them. I have no means to re-run from here.
  • All other checks on this head are queued or passed (CodeQL success). I will keep the PR watched.

The PR changes only .claude/skills/verify/SKILL.md and one .gitignore line.

Address CodeRabbit review on the local run recipe: chain initdb, pg_ctl,
pg_isready and redis-server with && so a leftover data dir or occupied
port stops the recipe instead of falling through to another store; make
the health probe fail on HTTP errors with curl --fail; name the database
in the persistence-check psql command; capture the uvicorn PID and a
Redis pidfile so shutdown only stops what the recipe started.

… the health probe

If port 8000 is busy, uvicorn exits on bind and curl would probe someone
else's server. Check kill -0 on the captured PID before and after the
health probe and fail the boot block otherwise. Addresses CodeRabbit's
follow-up on the verify skill.

kill -0 passes while uvicorn is still importing, so a leftover server on
port 8000 could answer the health probe first. Refuse to start when the
port is busy, and after the probe require ss to show UVICORN_PID as the

ss is not installed in the cloud session image, so the previous guard
passed silently when the port was busy and always failed afterwards.
fuser is present: refuse to start when 8000/tcp has a holder, and after
the health probe require that holder to be UVICORN_PID. Checked against

Port check does not halt recipe

Medium Severity

The new port-8000 guard runs false but is not chained to the following nohup and curl steps, so a busy port still starts uvicorn and health-probes whatever is already listening. The later PID comparison fails only after the recipe has already talked to that other server.

Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Guard the Redis shutdown kill so it cannot signal an unrelated process.

The recipe never removes /var/lib/postgresql/verify-redis.pid before it starts Redis. The shutdown step then runs kill "$(cat /var/lib/postgresql/verify-redis.pid)" without checking what that PID is. If the file is left over from an earlier run whose Redis died without cleanup, the PID can belong to a different live process. The shutdown step sends it SIGTERM. The stale file can survive a failed setup: the initdb or pg_ctl step fails, the || { ...; false; } branch stops the setup, and the stop commands still run.

Suggested fix
 ```bash
+rm -f /var/lib/postgresql/verify-redis.pid
 PGBIN=/usr/lib/postgresql/16/bin; D=/var/lib/postgresql/verify-data
-  `kill "$(cat /var/lib/postgresql/verify-redis.pid)"`,
+  stop Redis only when the recorded PID is a `redis-server` process:
+  `R=$(cat /var/lib/postgresql/verify-redis.pid 2>/dev/null); [ "$(ps -o comm= -p "$R" 2>/dev/null)" = redis-server ] && kill "$R"`,
Bound the health probe duration.
curl has retry controls but no per-transfer or retry-duration limit. If the server accepts the connection and /health does not complete, this command can hang indefinitely. Add --connect-timeout, --max-time, and a bounded --retry-max-time. Curl documents that --max-time limits each transfer and that retry timing does not stop an already-running transfer. (curl.se)
