SEL-549: harden the CSV ingest path (parse_csv_rows, used by POST /api/v1/ingest/csv and the inbound email route) for an unseen partner file.

Clear error on missing columns. A file with data rows whose header can't supply a traceability lot code, quantity, unit of measure or date (after any applied header mapping) is now rejected with one error that names each missing field and the column names we accept, plus the columns that were present. The 400 body also carries missing_columns. A missing CTE type keeps its existing per-row rejection, so the Jev CTE suggestion still rides the 400. Empty and header-only files keep their existing handling.

Row disposition log. parse_csv_rows takes an optional row_log, and CsvIngestResponse adds row_disposition_log, missing_columns and unrecognized_columns, all defaulting to empty so cached idempotent bodies stay valid. Each entry has row_number (0 for file-level decisions), disposition (accepted, rejected, flagged or skipped), a reason code, and optional field, detail and guessed_as. These are logged:

  • accepted rows, written once after ingest, with any missing-KDE note attached to that single entry
  • every rejection (the same message is in errors)
  • skipped comment rows, blank rows and, on a file whose header is valid, rows past the row limit (reason row_limit_overflow)
  • when the header is missing required columns, every data row, including overflow rows past the buffer that were never fully read, is rejected with reason missing_required_columns (not skipped), because the whole file failed the header check
  • if the unread overflow tail hits a CSV error while being counted, the partial count is kept and one rejected entry with reason unreadable_overflow_tail covers the rest
  • guesses: an applied header mapping, a unit of measure normalised, a location name normalised, and a CTE type taken from the upload instead of the row
  • unrecognised columns (their values still pass through into KDEs)

The log never includes partner cell values; the server log line records only the row, disposition, reason and field.

Never silent. A test asserts that every data row of a mixed file (accepted, comment, blank, bad quantity, missing unit, bad date, extra field) has exactly one accepted, rejected or skipped entry.

Tests. There's a new services/ingestion/tests/test_csv_partner_file_hardening_sel549.py with 25 tests, using only synthetic data: tests/fixtures/01_harvesting.csv and inline CSVs (C.Lee's scoped exception). All 384 tests/test_csv_*.py tests pass locally. test_fsma_readiness_compat_2893.py::test_disabled_routers_removes_the_stubs fails on main as well, so that failure isn't from this change.

No files overlap with open PRs #3665 or #3680.

Red Team acceptance bar (update)

Passing our own fixtures cleanly isn't the bar. A run passes only when every field, event type or format it doesn't recognize is flagged in the disposition log and in the error or warning output, and no row is silently dropped or accepted. The tests check that rows in equal accepted plus rejected plus skipped, with flagged entries on top. The inputs are pytest fixtures derived from services/ingestion/tests/fixtures/01_harvesting.csv, covered by the scoped exception:

  • test_acceptance_unknown_column_is_flagged: an extra partner_pallet_code column is flagged in the log and in kde_warnings, and is kept as a KDE.
  • test_acceptance_unknown_cte_type_is_rejected_not_defaulted: a cte_type of teleporting rejects the row with the value named, and no longer falls back to the upload's CTE. Behavior change. One case is different: a value copied in through a guessed header mapping that isn't a CTE keeps the fallback, but it's flagged (mapped_cte_not_recognized) and warned, which preserves test_free_text_in_an_unrecognised_column_keeps_the_declared_cte_as_fallback.
  • test_acceptance_malformed_date_is_flagged (32/13/2026) and test_acceptance_malformed_quantity_format_is_flagged (5,000 lbs).
  • test_acceptance_missing_required_columns_flagged: drops quantity and unit_of_measure.
  • test_acceptance_garbled_and_empty_rows_flagged: a control-character row is rejected and an empty row is skipped, each with its own log entry.

There are now 14 new tests, and all 390 tests/test_csv_*.py tests pass.

Note

Medium Risk
Touches the shared parse_csv_rows path and CSV API response shape with a behavior change for unknown CTE types, but changes are additive logging/validation with safe defaults rather than auth or persistence logic.

Overview
SEL-549 hardens partner CSV ingest so every physical row is accounted for and bad headers fail with actionable errors instead of opaque per-row noise.

Missing required columns. Files with data rows whose header cannot supply lot code, quantity, UOM, or a date (after Jev header mapping) now fail fast with one error listing each missing field, accepted aliases, and present columns. The 400 body adds missing_columns and row_disposition_log; every data row (including unread overflow past the row buffer) is rejected with missing_required_columns, not skipped.

Row disposition log. CsvRowDispositionEntry and response fields row_disposition_log, missing_columns, and unrecognized_columns (empty defaults for idempotent replay) record accepted / rejected / flagged / skipped outcomes with reason codes. Parse time logs rejections, skips, header guesses, normalizations, and unrecognized columns without cell values; finalize_row_dispositions_from_ingest writes the single final accepted/rejected outcome after ingest_events (including duplicate/rule failures and missing-KDE notes folded into that entry).

Behavior and safety tweaks. Unrecognised cte_type values in a row are rejected instead of silently using the upload fallback (mapped-column unknown CTE still falls back but is flagged). Row-limit overflow assigns the first over-limit row one rejected entry and later unread rows skipped entries; aggregate overflow messages skip synthetic EventResult synthesis via a structural overflow_aggregates list (not substring matching on error text). Partial overflow counts are preserved when csv.Error hits the unread tail.

Tests. New test_csv_partner_file_hardening_sel549.py covers counting balance, 400 payloads, adversarial quantity text, and related edge cases; an existing Jev test asserts disposition on 400.

Walkthrough

CSV parsing now records file-level and per-row accepted, rejected, flagged, and skipped outcomes. The upload route finalizes parsed-event dispositions from ingestion results and returns the disposition log with missing and unrecognized column lists. Tests cover parsing and ingestion outcomes, row accounting, overflow handling, and log details that omit cell values.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 774b6

Partner CSVs with a generic type or cte column holding product categories, for example, can have every row rejected even though the declared CTE is valid. Very large uploads can also produce large disposition logs and log volume, and some disposition details still expose cell-derived values. Fix the CTE column handling before merging; the remaining items are smaller follow-ups.

Security architecture risk: High · up to 774b6

The new reporting can turn a size-limited upload into millions of retained and serialized disposition records, threatening ingestion availability. It also introduces a path that copies otherwise-rejected partner-cell content into operational logs. Existing permission and tenant checks remain in place.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: The 500-row ingestion cap no longer bounds diagnostic allocation. Both valid-header overflow and missing-required-column rejection create a disposition object for every counted tail row; each entry also invokes logging, and the upload handler serializes the entire collection. A permitted 5 MB CSV containing very short records can produce millions of entries without requiring successful ingestion. Compared with the base's aggregate overflow errors, this introduces substantial memory, serialization, response-size, and logging amplification that can affect shared ingestion workers.
  • Medium · security · observed: Unit-normalization metadata is not restricted to canonical units: normalization falls back to arbitrary lowercased input, which is placed in guessed_as and detail. The logging helper emits guessed_as before quantity validation, so cell content from an otherwise-rejected row now crosses the intended cell-free diagnostic boundary into operational logging and the disposition response. Unknown-unit validation logging already existed for rows reaching event construction; the introduced exposure includes rows rejected before that construction. No new cross-tenant read authority is established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — An ingestion-authorized principal can trigger the expanded allocation without obtaining additional data-store privileges. Tenant-scoped writes do not isolate request memory or serialization work. The shared email caller also incurs parser allocations; the extent of cross-request impact depends on deployment worker isolation, which was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A short-record CSV can pass the byte limit, fail required-column validation, and still create a diagnostic entry for every counted record before returning 400. This makes rejection itself an amplification path; successful persistence is unnecessary.
  • observed — An unknown unit value changed by lowercasing is emitted as guessed_as before quantity rejection. The disposition logger omits detail, which limits some error-text exposure, but explicitly includes guessed_as. Returning the same uploader's input is not by itself evidence of unauthorized disclosure; the introduced operational-log path is the privacy boundary concern.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Upload permission enforcement checks tenant context and consumes a tenant rate-limit bucket. Inbound email resolves the tenant using both recipient and allowed sender before the adapter constructs its tenant-bound ingestion principal. These controls constrain who reaches ingestion but do not cap diagnostics within one accepted request.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Persistence retains per-event savepoints and outer transaction rollback. Final accepted dispositions are generated only after ingestion returns. Existing persistence serializes chain growth and idempotency lookup per tenant, while optional request idempotency distinguishes completed replay from active reservations. These controls mitigate false acceptance and repeated writes, not the earlier diagnostic-allocation path.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give disposition records, serialized diagnostic bytes, and emitted log events explicit budgets independent of input size. Preserve overflow accountability through bounded row ranges or aggregate counts rather than one retained object per excess row.
  • proposed — Restrict diagnostic normalization metadata to an allowlisted canonical vocabulary. For unknown values, emit a fixed reason and field identifier without copying the cell into guessed_as, detail, or operational logs.

P2 Badge Reconcile row dispositions with actual ingestion results

When a CSV contains duplicate events or rows rejected by downstream KDE validation, rule enforcement, or persistence, this entry still reports accepted with reason ingested. It is created during parsing, before ingest_csv() calls ingest_events(), and is returned unchanged even though services/ingestion/app/webhook_compat.py explicitly rejects those events. Consequently, the new row-level evidence can tell an uploader that a rejected, unpersisted row was ingested, contradicting the response's event results and accepted/rejected totals. Retain the source-row association and finalize each disposition from the corresponding ingestion result before returning or logging it as ingested.

The parser marks rows as accepted before ingest_events runs. For example, a duplicate row is later rejected, but this response still reports it as accepted in row_disposition_log. Map ingestion results back to their source rows and return their final dispositions. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Guard malformed headers before logging header-derived fields. parse_csv_rows does not call _read_header_row or malformed_header_reason before logging duplicate and unrecognized headers. _append_row_log writes the normalized field value without truncation, so malformed or headerless input can place row data in server logs. Skip these entries or log only a count for malformed headers, and truncate all header-derived log fields, including normalized and source_key.

The date_guessed branch never runs, so fuzzy date parsing is not flagged.

When ts is not None, _parse_date_flexible always returns date_warning=None. It returns a warning only together with ts=None, and that case is rejected at Line 1111. The if date_warning: block is therefore dead code, and no date_guessed entry is ever logged.

The _dateutil_parser.parse(raw, fuzzy=True, dayfirst=False) fallback is the real date guess. For example, 04/05/2026 is read as April 5th and never flagged. The PR says normalization and mapping guesses are logged. A silent date guess in a KDE that feeds the FDA export is the case the disposition log should show.

Flag the row when the value did not parse as an ISO timestamp. Do this from the call site, or return the parse path from _parse_date_flexible.

Update the date logging around `_parse_date_flexible` so successfully parsed
values that did not use the ISO timestamp path are flagged as `date_guessed` via
`_append_row_log`, with a detail describing the flexible interpretation. Keep
the existing rejection behavior for values that fail parsing.

guessed_as and detail carry a value derived from the partner's cell.

_normalize_uom falls back to the lowercased cell text for units it does not know. When that text differs from uom_raw only by case, this entry sets guessed_as=uom. _append_row_log writes guessed_as to the server log and the response returns it. The detail text also embeds uom.

This contradicts the CsvRowDispositionEntry docstring, which says partner cell values must not leave the ingest path via logs or API responses. It also contradicts the PR statement that server log lines carry only row, disposition, reason, and field.

Set guessed_as only when the result is a known canonical unit. Otherwise use a fixed detail text.

The _reject helper at Line 1074 has a related problem. It passes messages such as quantity '{quantity_raw}' is not a number and could not parse date '...' into detail. Those values are already in parse_errors, but the "never includes cell values" docstring is not true for them. Either sanitize them or relax the docstring.

Record the complete overflow range.

The skipped entry uses the first rejected row as its row_number. The API contract requires every physical row to be accounted for, but the remaining skipped rows have no row identifiers. Add a row_count field and pass the overflow range through _append_row_log. This keeps the response bounded while preserving accurate row accounting.

Check later explicit CTE columns for unknown values.

If cte_type is harvesting and event_type is teleporting, this return hides the unknown value. The row is accepted, and event_type is excluded from KDEs without a warning. Check the remaining explicit CTE columns before accepting the row. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Compare row numbers as a sorted sequence in _assert_counts_balance.

The helper stores outcomes in a dictionary keyed by row_number, so duplicate outcomes for one row collapse into a single key. A missing row can also pass the length check if an unexpected row number takes its place. Checking the sorted row numbers against the expected sequence catches both cases.

Assert the unknown CTE row disposition and event exclusion.

The current test does not prove that row 3 is rejected. It can pass if row 3 is logged and reported as an error but accepted under the upload’s harvesting CTE. Assert that row 3 has a rejected disposition and that no event is produced for row 3.

REVIEW: FAIL — SEL-549 partner CSV hardening (#3682)

Head reviewed: 9e7b135d2191ed78734e83c39b2882f6c2bb47f3 (claude/sel-549-ingest-hardening).

The disposition log and new tests do not meet the SEL-549 bar (every bad row flagged, counts balance, synthetic fixtures only). Three blockers:

1. Rows are logged as accepted before ingest_events runs

In services/ingestion/app/csv_templates.py, parse_csv_rows appends disposition="accepted" / reason="ingested" as soon as a row parses into an IngestEvent (lines 1299–1305):

_append_row_log(
    row_log,
    row_number=row_num,
    disposition="accepted",
    reason="ingested",
    detail=f"Row ingested as {row_cte}",
)

ingest_csv then calls await ingest_events(...) later (lines 1872–1879), where dedup, KDE checks, and persistence actually decide the outcome. The row_disposition_log attached to CsvIngestResponse (lines 1934–1936) is the parse-time row_log unchanged — there is no pass that rewrites or corrects those "accepted" / "ingested" entries after ingest_events returns. A row can therefore be reported as accepted/ingested when it was later deduped, KDE-failed, or not saved.

2. The counts do not balance

Missing required columns — file-level only, no per-row accounting. When _missing_required_partner_columns finds gaps, the code logs only row_number=0 entries (missing_required_columns plus one missing_column per absent name) and returns immediately (lines 973–991). Every physical data row in that file is left with no disposition, so accepted + rejected + flagged + skipped cannot equal rows sent.

First over-limit row is both skipped and rejected. In the row loop (lines 1011–1033), when row_num - 1 > MAX_CSV_ROWS:

  • if skipped_overflow is non-zero, the same row_num gets disposition="skipped" / reason="row_limit_overflow" (lines 1017–1023);
  • then that same row_num always gets disposition="rejected" / reason="row_limit_exceeded" (lines 1026–1032).

So the first row past the limit is double-counted (skipped and rejected). Downstream “rows in == accepted + rejected + skipped” checks cannot hold.

3. New tests invent data beyond the allowed fixtures

services/ingestion/tests/test_csv_partner_file_hardening_sel549.py claims fixture-only synthetic data (module docstring / FIXTURE = .../fixtures/01_harvesting.csv), but several tests invent values outside sample_data/ and services/ingestion/tests/fixtures/:

  • LOT-SYN-1 … LOT-SYN-5, Synthetic Kale, Synthetic Farm (e.g. lines 39, 51, 62–68, 87, 97, 107)
  • BIN-7 (lines 87, 90)
  • PAL-SYN-{i} written over fixture rows (line 157)

Use rows from the allowed fixtures, or data-free assertions (structure/disposition/error text only), instead of inventing lot codes, product names, pallet/bin IDs, and farm names.

Verdict

Do not merge. Fix the three items above, keep tests on allowed fixtures / data-free asserts only, then re-request review on the new head.

REVIEW: FAIL codex 9e7b135

Log accepted/rejected only after ingest_events so dedup and KDE
failures are not reported as ingested. Balance counts for missing
columns and row-limit overflow, and keep partner tests on fixture data.

Generic CTE columns reject valid rows

High Severity

_unknown_row_cte_value treats the first non-empty value in any of cte_type, event_type, type, or cte as an event type. A native type or cte column whose values are not CTE aliases now rejects the row and drops the upload fallback, even when that column is ordinary partner data (product type, pack type) and cte_type was supplied on the upload. The mapped-column path keeps the fallback for the same situation, so only unmapped collisions fail closed.

Bound the per-row overflow entries. Their count grows with the upload size.

The overflow loop at services/ingestion/app/csv_templates.py:1109-1117 creates one CsvRowDispositionEntry and one INFO log line for each row after row 500. Before this loop runs, the code counts the remaining rows without storing them. The loop then reverses that design.

The number of overflow rows is limited only by the 5 MiB upload cap. A file of short data rows can contain millions of rows. Each row creates a Pydantic entry and a log line during the synchronous parse_csv_rows call that ingest_csv makes directly.

The cost has two parts:

  • Entry construction and logging happen before the success or error branch. A request that returns the 400 "No valid rows found" error still pays this cost.
  • On the success path, row_disposition_log=row_log returns every entry. The response body grows with the file.

The proposed summary entry changes the disposition contract. The code comment at lines 1100-1103 says the counts must "balance", and the PR states that row-limit overflow counts must balance. A single summary entry cannot represent N skipped rows with the current CsvRowDispositionEntry fields. Settle that contract first. Either add a counted-range representation to the model, or document that overflow rows appear only as a count.

Update the overflow handling in parse_csv_rows to avoid creating and logging one
entry per skipped row; first define how overflow is represented so disposition
counts remain balanced, then implement a bounded counted-range representation in
CsvRowDispositionEntry or document and implement count-only overflow reporting.

REVIEW: FAIL — SEL-549 partner CSV hardening (#3682) delta re-review

Head reviewed: bf0265123dc312959c36a1d525b4f4308bc0e1b9 (claude/sel-549-ingest-hardening).
Prior FAIL: #3682 (review) (9e7b135d).
Delta: merge of main at 36cb64409 (remerge-diff clean; csv_templates.py blob unchanged by the merge) then fix commit bf0265123.

Static preflight only — no production ingest. Substantial progress on the three FAIL items, but Claims A/B are not fully closed.

Finding 1 / Claim A — STILL OPEN (partial fix)

finalize_row_dispositions_from_ingest now records exclusive accepted / rejected after await ingest_events (csv_templates.py ~1969–1970, finalizer ~891–911). Parse no longer appends disposition="accepted" / reason="ingested" before ingest — that part of the original FAIL is fixed.

Remaining gaps vs “logged once, with its final disposition, after ingest_events”:

  • Parse-time still appends disposition="flagged" with detail “Accepted with missing KDEs: …” (csv_templates.py ~1391) before ingest. If KDE / ingest later rejects the row, the finalizer appends a second entry without correcting that earlier “Accepted …” text. Misleading acceptance language can survive in the disposition log beside a later rejection.
  • So a row is not always logged once with only its final exclusive outcome.

Finding 2 / Claim B — STILL OPEN (partial fix)

Ordinary row-limit overflow — fixed. First over-limit row is rejected once; further unread rows are each skipped under their own numbers (csv_templates.py ~1109–1127). No more double-count of the first overflow row as both skipped and rejected.

Missing required columns — incomplete:

  • Within the buffered window, data rows now get per-row rejected / blank-or-comment skipped (~1048–1080).
  • The reader only buffers MAX_CSV_ROWS + 1 records (~985–995). On the missing-column early return, skipped_overflow is ignored, so a file with e.g. 502+ data rows and a missing required column yields only ~501 row outcomes — not every physical row.
  • The missing-column HTTP 400 path (ingest_csv ~1926–1944) builds detail with missing_columns but does not attach row_disposition_log, so callers never see the per-row accounting that was built.
  • Aggregate overflow parse_errors are still turned into extra rejected EventResults (~1998–2008) while receipt record_count uses len(events) + len(parse_errors) (~1966), so response totals can still diverge from exclusive row-bucket math. flagged remains a supplementary annotation, not an exclusive bucket.

Finding 3 / Claim C — FIXED (invented partner IDs)

No matches for LOT-SYN, Synthetic Kale, Synthetic Farm, PAL-SYN, or BIN-7. Sole file source is services/ingestion/tests/fixtures/01_harvesting.csv. Bin/pallet cases reuse fixture field_id. Residual %%LOT?? / ZZZ are corrupt-input literals, not invented partner product data.

Claim D (unknown columns) — OK

Unrecognized columns are still warned and flagged (~1082–1095); nonempty values remain in KDEs (~1340–1342), not silently dropped.

Jev fallback — PASS

Still intentional and gated (enablement / confidence / consistency in services/shared/jev/cte_classification.py ~238–259). Explicit unknown CTE values still reject (csv_templates.py ~1212–1220).

Remerge / regressions

  • Remerge-diff of 36cb64409: clean (0 lines). Merge did not alter the FAIL-era csv_templates.py blob.
  • No new regressions vs clear missing-column errors, unknown-CTE rejection, or unknown-column warnings. The open items above block closing Findings 1 and 2.

Verdict

Do not merge yet. Close Claim A (no pre-ingest “Accepted …” language that can outlive a later reject; one exclusive final disposition per data row after ingest) and Claim B (every physical row accounted for on missing-column files including overflow; surface row_disposition_log on the 400; keep response counts consistent with exclusive buckets). Then re-request review.

REVIEW: FAIL codex bf02651

Stop logging a pre-ingest flagged "Accepted with missing KDEs" so a later
ingest reject cannot leave a row with two dispositions; fold missing-KDE
notes onto the single final exclusive entry instead. On the missing-column
early return, bucket unread overflow rows so every physical row is counted,
include row_disposition_log on the 400 response, and skip aggregate overflow
parse_errors when synthesizing rejected EventResults so totals match the
exclusive bucket sum.

REVIEW: FAIL — SEL-549 partner CSV hardening (#3682) delta re-review

Head reviewed: 2cfcc3146cce74341ed7a57c8e5d93b77bbc8273 (claude/sel-549-ingest-hardening).
Prior FAIL: #3682 (review) (bf0265123).
Delta: merge of main at 760f74b4b (remerge-diff clean; csv_templates.py blob unchanged by the merge vs bf0265123) then fix commit 2cfcc3146.

Static preflight only — no production ingest. Claims 1 and most of 2/3 land, but a new filter regression blocks PASS.

Claim 1 (missing-KDE note on single final disposition) — FIXED

Parse no longer appends disposition="flagged" / “Accepted with missing KDEs…”. Missing KDEs are carried in row_notes (csv_templates.py ~1413–1421) and attached as a suffix on the single post-ingest_events exclusive outcome in finalize_row_dispositions_from_ingest (~897–920, call ~2012). “Accepted with missing KDEs” remains only in comments/docstrings.

Claim 2 (missing-column overflow + 400 log) — FIXED for the prior FAIL (with notes)

  • Buffered data rows still get per-row rejected / blank-or-comment skipped.
  • Unread overflow past the buffer is now logged per row (~1099–1109). Claude said skipped; the code uses rejected / missing_required_columns. That still gives every counted overflow row an exclusive bucket and satisfies the prior FAIL (counts can balance). Call out the wording mismatch only.
  • HTTP 400 detail now includes row_disposition_log (~1964–1965).

Residual (pre-existing edge, not newly introduced here): if csv.Error fires while counting the unread tail, skipped_overflow is reset to 0 (~1010–1014), so those unread rows get no dispositions. Prefer preserving a partial count or a single explicit “unreadable overflow tail” outcome rather than dropping the count.

Claim 3 (no extra rejected EventResults for overflow) — FIXED for inflation; NEW REGRESSION

Aggregate overflow parse_errors are no longer turned into rejected EventResults that inflate rejected/total (~2036–2049). Good.

Blocker: the exclusion is a substring match:

if "more row(s)" in err and "were skipped" in err:
    continue

bad_quantity (and similar) embed the raw cell in the error string (~1330: quantity '{quantity_raw}' is not a number). A cell whose text happens to contain both more row(s) and were skipped suppresses a genuine row rejection from response counters even with no overflow — the row_log can show rejected while response.rejected does not. Identify aggregate overflow structurally (dedicated reason/flag/object), not by scanning arbitrary error text.

Earlier fixes still hold

  • Fixtures: OK — no LOT-SYN / Synthetic Kale/Farm / PAL-SYN / BIN-7; source remains tests/fixtures/01_harvesting.csv.
  • Unknown columns: OK — still warned/flagged (~1112–1125); nonempty values kept in KDEs (~1370–1372).
  • Jev fallback: OK — still gated (~1761–1763; cte_classification.py ~242–259); unknown declared CTEs still reject (~1242–1250).

Remerge / regressions

  • Remerge-diff of 760f74b4b: clean (0 lines). Merge did not alter the bf0265123 csv_templates.py blob.
  • Regression (blocks merge): fragile overflow parse_errors filter can drop real rejections from response counts.

Verdict

Do not merge yet. Replace the "more row(s)" / "were skipped" substring skip with a structural marker for aggregate overflow summaries, then re-request review. Claims 1–2 against the prior FAIL are otherwise in good shape.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Append the source row number immediately after events.append(event).

event_source_rows must stay index-aligned with events. finalize_row_dispositions_from_ingest pairs them with zip. The append at Line 1426 runs after events.append(event) at Line 1410. Between them, the missing-KDE block can raise. If it does, except Exception rejects the row with parse_exception, but the event stays in events. event_source_rows then lacks that row. Every later event is paired with the wrong source row. Final dispositions are then attributed to the wrong rows, and the rejected row is also ingested.

The failure needs an unexpected exception in that block, so it is unlikely. The cost of the fix is one moved line.

…count (SEL-549)

Addresses Codex review 5680111391 on #3682.

- Skip aggregate overflow summaries in ingest_csv by an explicit
overflow_aggregates marker (object identity), not substring matching,
so crafted cell text can no longer hide a real rejection from counts.
- Keep the partial skipped_overflow count when csv.Error fires while
counting the unread tail, and record one unreadable_overflow_tail
rejection instead of dropping those rows.
- Tests: adversarial quantity cell, structural marker, partial count on
csv.Error, missing-column overflow rejected (all from
tests/fixtures/01_harvesting.csv); update the jev 400 test for the
  row_disposition_log now carried on 400s.

REVIEW: PASS — SEL-549 partner CSV hardening (#3682) delta re-review

Head reviewed: 774b661301537bd20876ece76136fd0caf058405 (claude/sel-549-ingest-hardening).
Prior FAIL: #3682 (review) (2cfcc3146).
Delta: merge of main at 42d6eb686 (remerge-diff clean; csv_templates.py blob unchanged vs 2cfcc3146) then 22a84b65d (structural overflow marker + partial overflow-tail count) and 774b66130 (tightened missing-KDE rejection assertion).

Static preflight only — no production ingest. Prior blocker closed; earlier SEL-549 fixes hold.

Claim 1 (structural overflow_aggregates; crafted cell cannot suppress) — FIXED

parse_csv_rows records the aggregate overflow summary in overflow_aggregates (csv_templates.py ~1171–1175). ingest_csv skips EventResult synthesis only for those marked object identities (~2096–2106), not by scanning "more row(s)" / "were skipped" in error text. A crafted quantity cell produces its own rejection string; matching overflow wording cannot put that string into the identity set or suppress its counters. Covered by test_adversarial_quantity_with_overflow_wording_still_counts_rejected and test_overflow_aggregate_skipped_by_structural_marker_not_substring.

Claim 2 (partial skipped_overflow + unreadable_overflow_tail) — FIXED

On csv.Error while counting the unread tail, the loop keeps the partial skipped_overflow increment and sets overflow_tail_unreadable (~1021–1029) instead of zeroing. Readable overflow rows get exclusive per-row outcomes; one additional unreadable_overflow_tail rejection covers the uncountable remainder (ordinary path ~1185–1198; missing-column path ~1127–1142). First over-limit row remains a single rejection. Physical rows beyond what was counted before the parse error cannot be enumerated; they are represented once by that tail entry (not silently dropped, not double-counted). Covered by test_csv_error_while_counting_overflow_keeps_partial_count.

Claim 3 (4 new tests + tightened KDE assertion; fixtures only) — FIXED

New tests in test_csv_partner_file_hardening_sel549.py:

  1. test_adversarial_quantity_with_overflow_wording_still_counts_rejected (~563)
  2. test_overflow_aggregate_skipped_by_structural_marker_not_substring (~630)
  3. test_csv_error_while_counting_overflow_keeps_partial_count (~682)
  4. test_missing_column_overflow_rows_are_rejected_not_skipped (~722)

All derive from services/ingestion/tests/fixtures/01_harvesting.csv. Deliberate malformed-input mutations (adversarial quantity text, padding) are not invented partner product/lot/farm IDs. No LOT-SYN / Synthetic Kale/Farm / PAL-SYN / BIN-7. Missing-KDE assertion tightened so the note is required on the final rejected disposition (~408 / 774b66130).

Earlier fixes still hold

  • Unknown columns: OK — still warned/flagged (~1145–1158); nonempty values kept in KDEs (~1423–1425).
  • Jev: OK — still gated (cte_classification.py ~242–260); unknown declared CTEs still reject (csv_templates.py ~1295–1303).
  • Prior closed items: OK — missing KDEs remain notes on the single final disposition; missing-column 400 includes row_disposition_log; exclusive overflow buckets; aggregates do not inflate rejected/total.

Remerge / regressions

  • Remerge-diff of 42d6eb686: clean (0 lines). Merge did not alter the 2cfcc3146 csv_templates.py blob.
  • Regressions: none identified in this static preflight.

Verdict

PASS on the delta against the prior FAIL. Merge still requires green required checks and the usual different-engine / gate policy Lead owns — this review does not merge or approve.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Append the source row number next to events.append(event).

event.append runs at Line 1463. event_source_rows.append(row_num) runs only at Line 1479. If anything between them raises, the except Exception block rejects the row, but the event stays in events. event_source_rows then misses that row, and every later row shifts by one.

finalize_row_dispositions_from_ingest zips event_source_rows with the ingest results by position. A shift attaches accepted or rejected outcomes to the wrong row numbers in the disposition log. Today the intermediate calls rarely raise, but the contract that event_source_rows is parallel to events depends on the order of two statements far apart.

Append both in the same place:

Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Generic type and cte columns reject rows that are otherwise valid.

_unknown_row_cte_value scans all of _CTE_TYPE_COLUMNS. This list includes the generic names type and cte. The first non-empty cell that is not a _CTE_TYPE_ALIASES key is returned as an unknown CTE. parse_csv_rows then rejects the row with unknown_cte_type at Lines 1295-1303.

Example: a partner file has a product-category column named type, with values such as Organic or Bulk. The caller passes cte_type=receiving, or Jev supplies a file CTE. Before this change, _detect_row_cte_type ignored the unrecognised value and used the fallback CTE. After this change, every row in the file is rejected, even though the declared CTE is valid.

The loop also stops at the first non-empty column. An empty cte_type followed by a non-CTE type therefore rejects the row.

Treat only cte_type and event_type as authoritative for the unknown-value rejection. Keep type and cte as soft aliases that _detect_row_cte_type reads when the value is known.

Update the kde_warnings description.

The unrecognised-column warning is required by the SEL-549 acceptance contract. Keep the append. Update the response description to include file-level unrecognised-column warnings.

Suggested fix
- description="Per-row warnings for rows missing required FSMA key data elements.",
+ description="Per-row warnings for missing required FSMA key data elements and file-level warnings for unrecognised columns.",

Update the response description associated with kde_warnings to state that it
includes both per-row warnings for missing required FSMA key data elements and
file-level warnings for unrecognised columns; keep the existing warning append
unchanged.
