Summary

SEL-549 second shipping format: map EDI 856 ASN into the same REQUIRED_KDES_BY_CTE shipping KDE set the CSV partner path (#3682) uses, score pass / gap / failure (Albertsons buyer overlay), and flag unknown columns / segments / values instead of dropping them.

Preflight only. Synthetic fixtures only. No production ingest. No deploy. No credentials. SEL-549 and SEL-590 holds unchanged.

What changed

  • New package services/ingestion/app/supplier_readiness/ (new files; existing EDI/CSV parsers untouched)
  • map_asn856_to_shipping_kdes, score_shipping_readiness, dry_run_shipping_csv
  • Fixtures: shipping_pass_partner.csv, shipping_messy_partner.csv (plus existing edi_corpus/asn_856.*)
  • Tests: tests/test_supplier_readiness_sel549.py (8 passed)

asn_856 fixture outcome (truthful)

Status = gap (not pass).

  • lot_number / traceability_lot_code: null → missing repo KDE
  • tlc_source_reference: missing
  • GTIN: missing (buyer)
  • SSCC: missing (buyer)
  • PO number: missing (buyer)
  • product_date: also missing on buyer overlay (Albertsons list; fail-case section 2.2; Lead one-liner named GTIN/SSCC/PO)
  • product / qty / UOM / ship_date / ship_from / ship_to / BOL reference: present and mapped (CA → cases, 20260310 → 2026-03-10)

Messy CSV dry-run (shipping_messy_partner.csv)

7 synthetic rows. Flagged counts by reason:

Status counts: gap=4, failure=3, pass=0 (buyer KDEs absent on messy rows; wrong CTE forced to failure per fail-case section 2.7).

Test plan

  • pytest services/ingestion/tests/test_supplier_readiness_sel549.py — 8 passed
  • Kimi review requested on this PR
  • Do not merge until green CI and PASS from a different engine

Reviewer

Kimi — please review. Preflight only; fixtures only.

Note

Low Risk
New isolated preflight library and test fixtures only; no changes to production ingest paths or auth.

Overview
Adds a preflight-only supplier_readiness module (SEL-549) that maps EDI 856 ASN extractions and partner shipping CSV rows into the same REQUIRED_KDES_BY_CTE[shipping] keys as the existing CSV/webhook path, then scores each row as pass, gap, or failure.

ASN path: map_asn856_to_shipping_kdes merges header/line extract data, optionally scans raw segments for Albertsons buyer fields (GTIN, PO, SSCC, product date), normalizes ship dates and UOM via existing EDI helpers, and flags unknown segment IDs and unrecognized qualifiers instead of dropping them.

Scoring: score_shipping_readiness treats malformed quantity/UOM as failure, missing repo KDEs or Albertsons buyer fields as gap, and complete valid rows as pass. CSV dry_run_shipping_csv scores all rows, keeps unknown column values on KDEs, tallies flags by reason, and forces failure for non-shipping cte_type.

Synthetic fixtures and eight tests cover the ASN gap case (null TLC on corpus fixture), pass CSV, messy CSV dry-run counts, and fail-case rules. No production ingest or route wiring—existing EDI extractors are only consumed in tests.

Walkthrough

Adds synthetic shipping-readiness mapping and scoring for ASN 856 data and CSV rows. The results include status, missing fields, failures, and flags. The CSV dry run also returns status and flag counts. Tests cover ASN mapping, CSV pass and gap cases, malformed quantities, unknown segments and columns, and unsupported CTE types.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 1d7fb

The preflight can report a supplier as ready, or show a gap or failure with the wrong cause, because some partner data is dropped or defaulted without a flag. Fix the CSV value handling and the ASN line-item and date handling before relying on its scores. Production ingestion is unaffected.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 1d7fb

The new functionality is confined to in-process synthetic preflight processing. No production caller, persistent write, or newly privileged access path was identified. The main uncertainty is whether consumers outside the repository could rely on these readiness results as a production validation decision.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is an in-process preflight API exercised by synthetic tests, not a newly exposed remote endpoint. Repository caller tracing found no production consumer; exposure through consumers outside the repository remains unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The SYNTHETIC label and readiness status are output metadata, not authentication, tenant isolation, or production authorization controls. The current implementation performs no privileged action based on a pass result.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Source-visible processing requires no reservation, rollback, cleanup, or recovery protocol: each call constructs local results without committing shared state. Repetition or interruption therefore does not introduce a partially applied security configuration or cross-request ownership transition.

P2 Badge Preserve missing CSV cells instead of converting them to strings

When a CSV row has fewer cells than its header, csv.DictReader supplies None for the missing fields, but _get converts those values to the nonempty string "None". For example, removing the final four buyer-field cells from shipping_pass_partner.csv still produces status="pass", with every buyer field set to "None" and no missing fields reported. Check for None before string conversion so truncated partner rows correctly report readiness gaps.

P2 Badge Connect malformed shipment dates to failure scoring

When an otherwise valid CSV contains an impossible shipment date such as 2026-03-99, the dry run reports only a gap, not a failure: normalization replaces the date with None, but neither mapper sets _ship_date_raw_failed, so this failure condition is unreachable through those paths. Conversely, calling the exported scorer directly with ship_date="garbage" can return pass. Validate supplied dates in the scorer and propagate normalization failures from both mappers so malformed dates remain distinguishable from missing dates.

Standard PRF purchase order ignored

Medium Severity

PRF is in _KNOWN_856_SEGMENTS, so it is not flagged, but _scan_buyer_and_unknowns never reads PRF01. A typical 856 purchase order is dropped and po_number is scored as a buyer gap.

Whitespace units default to units

Low Severity

Unresolved whitespace unit_of_measure values fall through to _normalize_unit, which substitutes units. That generic default can satisfy the required KDE and produce a false pass. This violates the no-lazy-defaults rule against inventing a generic unit of measure.

Store the raw value in each unknown-input flag. The flags claim the value is kept, but it is not.

These FlagRecord details say "kept for audit", "value kept" and "raw kept in flags only". The flag never contains the segment content or the value. Only the segment ID or the qualifier is stored. A partner's unrecognized REF, LIN or MAN value, or the whole unknown segment, cannot be recovered from the result. The test on line 87 of the test file injects ZZZ*KEEP-ME*1. It asserts only the segment ID, so it does not catch this.

Fix: include the value in detail. Use the full segment for unknown segments.

Example for the unknown segment (apply the same pattern to the other three)
- detail="EDI segment id not in the known 856 set; kept for audit",
+ detail=f"EDI segment id not in the known 856 set; raw={list(segment)!r}",

Flag or score the extra line items. Lines after the first are dropped without a trace.

The docstring says "Line items become one result each". The code scores lines[0] only. lines[1:] is discarded. No flag, failure or count records this. A multi-lot ASN reports one lot, and the other lots and their TLCs disappear from the preflight result. The path instructions require that TLCs and KDEs are not dropped.

Fix: return one result per line item, or at least add a flag for the unscored lines. Correct the docstring in either case.

Minimal fix: record the omission

Do not default a blank unit to "units".

If raw_unit is whitespace-only, resolved_unit is None and unit_failure stays False. Line 254 then calls _normalize_unit(" "). That function does not treat " " as empty. It logs a warning and returns "units". The KDE becomes a valid-looking "units" with no flag, and scoring accepts it. The path instructions forbid silently defaulting a KDE.

The _normalize_unit fallback is unreachable for any other input. Non-blank unrecognized units take the unit_failure branch. Use resolved_unit directly. A blank unit then stays None and is reported as a missing unit_of_measure. The _normalize_unit import on line 16 becomes unused.

Record unparseable ship dates as evidence. The failure branch is dead code, and the ASN path records nothing.

Line 328 checks kdes["_ship_date_raw_failed"]. No code sets this key. The malformed_ship_date failure on line 329 can never run.

The ASN path (line 256) is worse than the CSV path. _normalize_ship_date returns None for an unparseable value. The raw value is not kept and no flag is added. The result only shows ship_date as a missing KDE, so the failed validation is not recorded. The CSV path adds a malformed_date flag but does not set the failure.

The path instructions say "Validation failures must be recorded as evidence, never swallowed".

Fix:

  • Add a malformed_date flag in map_asn856_to_shipping_kdes.
  • Set the key that line 328 reads, or change line 328 to read a real signal.
  • Confirm whether a malformed date should be a failure or a gap. Update the test counts to match.

Reject infinite quantities.

float("inf") passes qf > 0 and qf == qf. quantity="inf" is accepted as a valid positive quantity. Python float() also accepts values such as "1_000". Use math.isfinite so that non-finite values become malformed_quantity failures.

Do not drop values from known CSV columns that no KDE key receives.

_CSV_KNOWN_COLUMNS includes event_time, carrier, carrier_name, asn_number and cte_type. These columns are known, so line 383 neither flags them nor copies them to extras. The kdes dict on lines 440-453 never reads them. Their values vanish from the result without a flag.

The ASN path keeps asn_number and carrier (lines 271-272). The module comment says extras are "never dropped". The path instructions require that KDEs are not dropped or silently defaulted. event_time is an event-level data element.

Fix: map these columns into kdes.

Update the `kdes` mapping so values from known CSV columns are not discarded:
map `asn_number`, `event_time`, and `cte_type`, and map `carrier` with
`carrier_name` as its fallback. Preserve the existing `extras` handling and

Fix the header-key mismatch: padded headers are treated as known but never read.

The known-column check on lines 380 and 483 uses the stripped header name. _get on line 397 looks up the raw row key.

Take a header such as " quantity" or "traceability_lot_code ":

  • The stripped key is in _CSV_KNOWN_COLUMNS, so it is not flagged as unrecognized_column.
  • It is not copied to extras, because it counts as known.
  • _get("quantity") misses it.

The cell value is silently dropped. A required KDE is then reported as missing, with no flag that explains why.

Extra cells in a row that is longer than the header land under the None key in DictReader. Line 381 skips them without a flag. This is a second silent drop.

Fix: normalize the row keys once at the top of _csv_row_to_kdes. Flag a None key as an overflow value.

Update _csv_row_to_kdes to normalize row keys once before KDE lookups so padded
headers map to their expected names; flag any None-keyed overflow cells as
unrecognized values instead of silently dropping them. Apply the same key
normalization in the header-level known-column check so its flags match the

Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Fix _get: it turns missing cells into the string "None" and trims TLC values.

There are two defects in this helper.

  1. csv.DictReader fills missing cells of a short row with None. str(None).strip() is "None", which is not empty. _get therefore returns the literal string "None". A short row gets "None" as its traceability_lot_code, reference_document and tlc_source_reference. _present accepts that value, so the required KDE is not reported as missing. Line 392 already handles None correctly, so the two code paths are inconsistent.
  2. .strip() is applied to every value, including traceability_lot_code (line 441). The path instructions require TLCs to be "preserved exactly as received (no trimming, case-folding, or re-generation)". tlc_source_reference and reference_document are identifiers too.

Fix: read row.get(name) and test for None. Add a preserve option that skips trimming. Use it for TLC, TLC source reference and reference document.

Assert the exact status counts for the messy fixture.

The PR description reports exact counts for the seven-row messy fixture: 4 gap, 3 failure and 0 pass. The test uses gap >= 1 and failure >= 2. These looser asserts accept regressions, such as a failure row that turns into a gap. They also accept a row that is dropped from the totals. The path instructions say to flag tests with "broader asserts".

Use exact equality. Also assert that status_counts sums to row_count.

REVIEW: PASS gemini 1d7fbfd

PR Review Summary (RegEngine #3702 / SEL-549 Preflight)

  1. No production ingest path or production DB writes added or reachable:

    • Confirmed. The new modules (services/ingestion/app/supplier_readiness/__init__.py and shipping.py) contain purely in-memory data transformation, validation, and dry-run scoring functions.
    • No DB connections, ORM models, session commits, SQL executions, or storage writes exist.
    • No routers, FastAPI endpoints, webhooks, or background workers are modified or wired to this code; the modules are unreferenced by existing production ingestion pipelines.
  2. No real customer data, only synthetic fixtures:

    • Confirmed. All test data in shipping_pass_partner.csv, shipping_messy_partner.csv, and test_supplier_readiness_sel549.py uses synthetic mock values (e.g., standard GS1 documentation prefix 00614141123456, placeholder names "Valley Fresh Farms" / "Metro Distribution Center", test lots, and deliberately malformed test tokens like "blargs" and "2026-03-99").
  3. Tests are meaningful and not tautological:

    • Confirmed. The test suite in test_supplier_readiness_sel549.py runs 8 substantive test cases exercising the X12 parser, field extraction, KDE mapping, error classification (gap vs. failure vs. pass), unknown segment/column flag retention, date/unit normalization, and messy CSV aggregation counts. No circular or trivial assertions.
  4. Only new files:

    • Confirmed. Exactly 5 files are introduced, all with new file mode 100644:
      • services/ingestion/app/supplier_readiness/__init__.py
      • services/ingestion/app/supplier_readiness/shipping.py
      • services/ingestion/tests/fixtures/shipping_messy_partner.csv
      • services/ingestion/tests/fixtures/shipping_pass_partner.csv
      • services/ingestion/tests/test_supplier_readiness_sel549.py
    • Zero existing files were modified, renamed, or deleted.
