Changes public contact email validation semantics and NLP output sanitization regex; both are security-motivated but could shift edge-case accept/reject behavior.
Overview
Addresses code-scanning batch 4 by replacing patterns flagged as ReDoS, response-splitting, overly-large regex ranges, and shell invocation.
The local QA e2e proxy strips CR/LF from proxied header names/values before send_header, and removes preconnect/dns-prefetch <link> tags via a linear HTML scan instead of a backtracking regex.
/api/contact drops the pragmatic EMAIL_RE in favor of isWellFormedEmail (single @, no whitespace, minimal domain shape) while keeping the 254-character cap; tests now assert oversized payloads fail without calling the delivery provider.
qa/summary.js runs child QA scripts with execFileSync(process.execPath, [scriptPath]) (no shell) and merges stdout/stderr on failure.
NLP llm_extractor rewrites _CONTROL_CHARS as an explicitly enumerated character class (same stripping behavior, clears CodeQL “overly large range”).

Replace ambiguous link-strip regex with a linear scan; check contact
emails with a non-backtracking structural helper; enumerate control
chars instead of large ranges; run QA summary scripts via execFileSync
argv (no shell); strip CR/LF from proxied response headers.
Alerts: 7, 61, 57, 70, 59, 60. Alert 68 handled in batch 3.

The proxy now sanitizes forwarded response headers and scans HTML to remove selected link tags. Contact email validation now uses structural checks while keeping the existing length limit and error response. The QA summary runner executes scripts without a shell and combines captured output on failure. The extractor lists the same matched control characters explicitly.
The QA proxy can alter some pages or remove needed stylesheets. These edge cases warrant correction before relying on affected QA results.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to edf0c
The changes generally strengthen existing controls without expanding network routing or execution authority. A Unicode-handling regression can defeat the local QA proxy’s link-removal safeguard. Other browser controls remain, but whether a retained link can cause an off-host connection has not been established.
Retained concerns
Low · security · inferred: The replacement scanner can retain formerly removed preconnect links when Unicode lowercase expansion shifts search offsets. This weakens one browser-isolation safeguard in the local QA proxy. Actual off-host network access is unproven because CSP and DNS-prefetch suppression remain in force.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified regression is bounded to HTML served through the local QA proxy and the browser consuming it. Exploitation would require influence over upstream HTML. No expanded production listener, tenant authority, credential access, or datastore exposure was established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — An expansion-heavy Unicode prefix, such as repeated U+0130 characters, can make link offsets in html.lower() exceed their positions in the original HTML. The scanner can then copy an entire targeted link into the output before advancing past it. The base regex operated directly on the original string. This establishes a filtering regression, but not a verified browser connection or data-exfiltration path.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Contact email input remains submission data and the provider’s reply-to value, not a network destination or command. Webhook configuration and Resend credentials remain environment-controlled, the recipient remains fixed, and provider requests retain manual redirect handling.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The contact change does not introduce a new delivery transaction or recovery mechanism. The existing per-instance rate-limit state is updated before validation, and provider acceptance, refusal, and exception paths remain unchanged. Their pre-existing concurrency and retry limitations are not attributed to this PR.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Preserve original-string offsets during case-insensitive link matching. Validate resource-hint behavior in the supported browser under the retained response headers to determine whether the filtering defect also permits off-host networking.

Explanation
The title names the main change: a security fix batch for code-scanning alerts. It lists the three fix types: ReDoS, header sanitization, and no-shell exec. The title follows the conventional commit format. It is 76 characters, which is within a reasonable length for a title. The title does not cover the control-character change in llm_extractor.py, but it does not need to cover every detail.

The description follows the template's main sections. The Summary section is filled in and states the batch scope. The Alerts fixed and Alerts skipped sections give per-alert detail, and the Tests run section lists the checks performed. The Type of Change checkboxes and the Checklist are missing. Preserve character offsets during case-insensitive HTML scanning
When an HTML response contains İ before a link, Python's lower() expands that character into two code points, so offsets found in lower no longer refer to the same positions in html. Using those offsets to slice the original response corrupts content or leaves preconnect links intact. For example, İ<link rel="preconnect" href="https://example.com">Hello becomes İ<ello. Use an ASCII-only case normalization that preserves string length, or otherwise keep all scan offsets aligned with the original HTML.

Keep scan offsets aligned with the original HTML.
str.lower() can expand a Unicode character. If the upstream HTML contains İ<link rel="preconnect" href="/x">, start is an offset into the longer lowercase string. The slices then use that offset on the original string and leave a stray < instead of preserving the surrounding HTML. Use length-preserving ASCII normalization for HTML tag matching.

Check the rel value before removing a link.
If the upstream HTML contains <link rel="stylesheet" href="/preconnect.css">, this condition removes the stylesheet because preconnect occurs in href. Match preconnect or dns-prefetch in the rel attribute value only.

Restore the ordering assertion.
If structural validation runs before the length guard, this test still passes because the input has two @ characters. Restore an assertion that over-limit input does not reach structural validation. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

7 (py/polynomial-redos, existing-e2e-proxy.py): closed. Linear _strip_preconnect_links replaces the backtracking <link…rel=…> regex. QA-only; slightly broader match (unquoted rel=, substring preconnect/dns-prefetch in tag) — acceptable for this proxy.
59 / 60 (py/http-response-splitting): closed. _sanitize_http_header strips CR/LF from header names/values before send_header. No happy-path behavior change.
61 (js/polynomial-redos, /api/contact): closed. isWellFormedEmail is non-backtracking; length cap retained. Edge-only tightening vs old EMAIL_RE: rejects a@.b.com and a@b.c. (leading/trailing domain dots). Intended; delivery remains the real validator. Contact tests updated accordingly.
57 (py/overly-large-range, llm_extractor.py): closed. Enumerated class is membership-equivalent to the prior ranges (incl. preserving tab/LF/CR).
70 (js/shell-command-injection-from-environment, qa/summary.js): closed. execFileSync(process.execPath, [scriptPath], …) argv form, no shell. Note: success path now captures stdout only (stderr discarded unless non-zero exit); fine for these QA scripts.
