fix(ingest): list per-event EPCIS batch errors and clear stale results before API-key save - #3665
Supersedes #3578 (and #3661, which closed when I renamed its branch to the required gemini/ engine prefix).
#3578 can't pass Commit Message Check because it inherited a non-conventional commit (120f8b353c, "Remove made-up sample files from frontend/public/samples") from another branch, and fixing that would need a history rewrite. This PR carries the same net changes from #3578 (head 89ea2b5088b46860412f5b3d48365d42437e01d9) as one conventional commit on a clean branch off main. They were applied with git diff origin/main...89ea2b50 -- <paths> | git apply, with no hand edits, and each file matches #3578's head byte for byte.
List per-event errors for rejected EPCIS batches, in both atomic and partial shapes (epcisErrorEventMessages in frontend/src/lib/epcis-upload.ts).
Clear earlier results and errors before the API-key save, so a failed save doesn't leave stale error lines on screen.
Add a URL-tab error state for a failed API-key save.
Tests: ingest-epcis-batch-errors.test.tsx (new), plus updates to ingest-csv.test.tsx and ingest-epcis.test.tsx.
Files: frontend/src/app/ingest/page.tsx, frontend/src/lib/epcis-upload.ts, and three tests under frontend/src/__tests__/pages/.
Note
Low Risk
Frontend-only ingest UX and test updates; API-key persistence behavior is unchanged aside from when UI state is cleared.
Overview
Improves ingest error handling so a failed API-key cookie write no longer wipes in-flight URL job progress, receipts, or mutation data. prepareSubmit now clears only save-error state first, runs storeApiKey, and resets job/result/mutation state after a successful save; a save failure leaves the previous job UI intact.
Tab and field UX: switching tabs (via handleTabChange) or picking a file clears stale urlError. URL save failures drive workspace-load-error styling, and the completed view shows an alert for the active tab’s save error while NormalizedDocumentViewer can fall back to doc_id / job_id for the receipt id.
EPCIS helpers in epcis-upload.ts dedupe per-event error lines with a Set when normalizing batch responses and parsing epcisErrorEventMessages.
Tests in ingest-csv.test.tsx extend the URL mutation mock (including data), assert tab-switch clearing, job progress retention on failed resubmit, and save errors alongside completed receipts.

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The ingestion page now displays EPCIS event-specific validation errors and API-key save errors. It clears prior results, errors, and mutation state after a successful key save or when no save is needed. A failed save preserves job tracking and receipt data. Tests cover EPCIS batch and single-event errors, URL save failures, tab changes, and retained job progress and receipt data.
Atomic persistence failures may not identify the affected event. This is a bounded feedback issue that can be addressed as follow-up.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the two main changes: per-event EPCIS batch error listing and clearing stale results before API-key save. Both appear in the raw summary (epcisErrorEventMessages, prepareSubmit clearing prior results and errors). The title is specific and follows conventional commit form. It omits the URL-tab error state and job retention, which is acceptable because the title need not cover every detail.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template well. It has a summary of the change with bullet points, and it names the work and the files changed. The Type of Change and Test Plan checkboxes are not ticked, and the Checklist and Related Issues sections are absent. The description does not say which test types were run, so the Test Plan is only partly covered. The description states that the tests exist in the PR, so the test-related items are partly addressed. Its main content is clear, so the check passes, but the missing checkboxes and Related Issues section should be completed.

Codex review of #3665 at 3e200d0. The 5 files are byte-identical to #3578 head 89ea2b5 (git diff is empty).
Blocking:
frontend/src/app/ingest/page.tsx:250 sets urlError when the API-key save fails on the URL tab. But the workspace-load-error condition at page.tsx:433 still checks only statusError, which was just cleared. So the class is never added, the CSS at globals.css:1128 doesn't apply, and the success badge stays visible on a failure. This is the Bugbot Low at :327, and it's user-visible. Fix: add urlError to that condition, and add an assertion to the URL test at ingest-csv.test.tsx:173.
Non-blocking:
epcis-upload.ts:120: per-event listing is correct for atomic and partial failures, is 1-based, and leaves out single-event errors.
page.tsx:221: stale results, errors and mutation state are cleared before the API-key save is awaited. Correct.
Test data: the new tests add only literal placeholder key and URL strings (ingest-csv.test.tsx:167, ingest-epcis-batch-errors.test.tsx:151). The invented timestamp, IDs, hashes and confidences in ingest-csv.test.tsx:58-65, 115, 187, 217 and 231 were already there before this PR. Worth a follow-up.

Codex delta review of 3e200d0 to 8b41753 (1 commit, 2 lines changed).
frontend/src/app/ingest/page.tsx:433: the workspace-load-error condition now includes urlError, so the rule at globals.css:1128 hides the success badge when the URL-tab API-key save fails. This fixes my earlier FAIL and Bugbot's Low.
frontend/src/tests/pages/ingest-csv.test.tsx:175: the URL-tab key-save-failure test (starting at :163) now checks that .workspace-load-error is present. No other error condition is true in that test, so it covers urlError specifically.
Nothing else changed and the delta adds no invented data. The older fixture values in ingest-csv.test.tsx are still a non-blocking follow-up.
This was a static review. Vitest didn't run locally; CI is still re-running at this head.

Codex delta review of 8b41753 to 37cc138 (2 commits, no main merge).
Blocking:
frontend/src/tests/pages/ingest-csv.test.tsx:207 adds an invented job ID, job-previous-123, which the assertions at :218 and :226 then check. Please use one runtime crypto.randomUUID() value and build both assertions from it.
Checked, with no issues:
page.tsx:250: a failed API-key save now returns before the job ID and status are reset, so the active job is kept.
epcis-upload.ts:94: deduping with a Set keeps the first-occurrence order and 1-based numbering, and no distinct errors are lost.
page.tsx:135, 170, 181: urlError is cleared on tab change and on both file selects.
page.tsx:441: the urlError workspace-load-error condition is unchanged, so no regression.
Handle atomic persistence failures with their failed index.
Atomic validation and all-rejected partial responses match the helper's expected shapes. However, an atomic persistence failure returns detail.failed_index and detail.message without detail.errors. The helper returns [] for this reachable response, so the UI does not show which event failed.

Codex delta review, 37cc138 to b00eb15 (one commit, b00eb15, "keep save error and receipt on stale job completion; use runtime job IDs in tests").
Prior blocking finding is fixed: ingest-csv.test.tsx (about :229 and :253) now builds job IDs with crypto.randomUUID() and derives the assertions from those values. No invented IDs or counts remain in the full PR test diff.
Checked, with no issues:
page.tsx:225-266 and 931-938: a failed API-key save keeps the previous job and receipt, and the completed view keeps the save error. A successful prepare still resets the prior state. The delta adds no race and doesn't clear errors.
ingest-csv.test.tsx:252-285 checks the kept error, the alert, the completed viewer and the original receipt ID.
Non-blocking: a job completing while the key save is still pending isn't tested directly.
Resolve prepareSubmit, epcis error dedupe, and ingest-csv save-error tests
so a failed API-key save keeps prior job/receipt state; keep Set-based
message dedupe. EPCIS page tests were identical on both parents.
Merge-conflict resolution review of #3665 at e4fd8b6 (head unchanged from requested). Merge parents: branch b00eb151bf121f3a06527703a35585912717eb56, main 21a29d37daae9b29c67cd2ae4848a78f7738618f. Compared with git diff 21a29d37daae9b29c67cd2ae4848a78f7738618f e4fd8b60272e90566de0c5af497197f1acb7057b and git diff b00eb151bf121f3a06527703a35585912717eb56 e4fd8b60272e90566de0c5af497197f1acb7057b for the three conflicted files. Net vs main parent is only those three files.
MERGE matches BRANCH for prepareSubmit: phase 1 clears save-error state (setUrlError / setCsvError / setEpcisError / setEpcisErrorEvents) before the API-key write so stale save errors do not stack; phase 2 clears results/mutations/job tracking only after a successful save, so a failed key save keeps prior job/receipt (intentional vs main’s clear-everything-first).
Main’s overlap/polling work is retained in MERGE (isTerminalIngestStatus, stopStatusPolling, abortable poll/retry refs). Branch UX (handleTabChange clearing urlError, activeSaveError callout, urlError in workspace-load-error) is retained. No conflict markers.
frontend/src/lib/epcis-upload.ts (Set dedupe)
MERGE == BRANCH: Set-based dedupe in normalizeEpcisIngestResult and epcisErrorEventMessages. git diff b00eb151bf121f3a06527703a35585912717eb56 e4fd8b60272e90566de0c5af497197f1acb7057b -- this file is empty. Main had weaker includes dedupe / no dedupe on the first errors loop; nothing unique from main was dropped here.
frontend/src/tests/pages/ingest-csv.test.tsx
All main test titles present; BRANCH’s three save-error / receipt retention tests kept. MERGE also takes main’s getIngestionJob queued mock on the URL job-path test (needed once main’s immediate poll landed). Tests use crypto.randomUUID() for job IDs — not fabricated fixtures.
Made-up data / DEMO-DOC-ID
No new sample/public fixtures vs main parent. DEMO-DOC-ID remains only as the pre-existing last-resort fallback; #3665 extends the chain with doc_id / job_id first. Overlaps #3653’s DEMO-DOC-ID removal; judged #3665 on its own merits — not a fail here.
Verdict: PASS — conflict resolution keeps stale save-error clearing, preserves main’s polling/test fixups, keeps Set dedupe, adds no made-up data.
Second-engine DeepSeek review of #3665 at e4fd8b6 (gemini/ingest-3578-clean).
Findings (none blocking):
frontend/src/app/ingest/page.tsx:350-392 — prepareSubmit clears only save-error state before storeApiKey; job/receipt reset runs after a successful save, so a failed key save keeps the prior job UI.
frontend/src/lib/epcis-upload.ts:94-115,134-144 — Set-based dedupe for batch error lines (order preserved).
frontend/src/tests/pages/ingest-csv.test.tsx — new tests use runtime UUIDs; cover tab clear, progress retention on failed resubmit, and completed-view receipt + save error.
Notes (non-blocking):
DEMO-DOC-ID fallback at page.tsx:1075 is pre-existing on main; sequenced behind open #3653.
Copy gate / Frontend gate reds are outside this diff or baseline drift; gate-only Engine Review / Head SHA / Blocker Checklist ignored per policy.
VERDICT confirmed by dsh headless + manual read of the three-file diff.
Resolve ingest page conflict: keep #3653 empty-state fallback (no
DEMO-DOC-ID) and keep #3665 activeSaveError callout in the completed
panel. Update ingest-csv test expectations accordingly.
