CARD TITLE (intent, not commit subject): fix-forward #3772 (tsk-lwkv4t): guest agent chat reply can post into any channel; same-name agents share one session slug

Autonomous build of board card tsk-wfkhb2.

REVISION: built on exec/tsk-lwkv4tff (cut at 8e1dcd40e3391c6fe5fac611723d71a45868ebc2), not on dev. That branch's
commits are ancestors of this one. Verified by git merge-base --is-ancestor
before the PR was opened.

Fix agent chat session reply: channel membership and slug collision

Fix 1 (route only, tinyagentos/routes/agent_chat_session.py, before
record_reply): work out the target channel the same way _handle_reply
does (body channel_id; else the channel of the message trace_id names,
via request.app.state.chat_messages.get_message). If there is a target
channel, load it with request.app.state.chat_channels.get_channel and
answer 403 {"error": "not a member of this channel"} unless the agent's
slug is in channel["members"]. No target channel = unchanged (falls back
to the agent's own DM).

Fix 2 (_resolve_slug): two registry agents whose canonical ids strip to
the same slug must not share a session. After the local-agent collision
check, refuse with 403 {"error": "handle collides with another registry agent"} when any OTHER active registry entry strips to the same slug (use
the registry store on app.state; read tinyagentos/agent_registry_store.py
for the listing method, do not invent one).

Tests added: reply with foreign channel_id -> 403; reply with trace_id of
message in foreign channel -> 403; reply into own DM -> 202 (positive
control); second registry agent with colliding slug -> 403.

RED-PROOF:

VERDICT: BLOCKER

  • BLOCKER: tests/test_agent_chat_session_routes.py:286 The slug collision test test_second_registry_agent_with_colliding_slug_gets_403 registers two agents with different handles (@agent-one and @agent-two). Since canonical_ids are derived from handles (not display_name), these agents will have different canonical_ids and thus different slugs. The test will not trigger the collision logic and cannot fail to detect a broken Fix 2. The test must create two registry agents whose canonical_ids actually strip to the same slug (e.g., by directly inserting registry entries or using handles that collide after prefix stripping).
  • NIT: tinyagentos/routes/agent_chat_session.py:94 Unused slug parameter in _resolve_target_channel function signature.
  • NIT: tinyagentos/routes/agent_chat_session.py:52 Broad except Exception catching all exceptions and defaulting to empty list may hide real registry errors.
  • NIT: tinyagentos/routes/agent_chat_session.py:143 No error handling for chat_channels.get_channel call; exceptions would bubble as 500 instead of being handled gracefully.
  • NIT: tinyagentos/routes/agent_chat_session.py:50 Comment assumes list_all returns agents ordered by id (oldest first) but this ordering guarantee should be verified in agent_registry_store.py or enforced explicitly.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Agent replies targeting a channel are accepted only when the agent is a member of that channel. Replies to channels the agent does not belong to are rejected with a 403 response and are not recorded, whether the channel is specified directly or resolved from a message.
    • When multiple registry agents share the same normalized handle, only the first-registered agent can use that session. Requests from the others are rejected with a 403 response.

Fix 1 (route only, tinyagentos/routes/agent_chat_session.py, before
`record_reply`): work out the target channel the same way `_handle_reply`
does (body `channel_id`; else the channel of the message `trace_id` names,
via `request.app.state.chat_messages.get_message`). If there is a target
channel, load it with `request.app.state.chat_channels.get_channel` and
answer 403 `{"error": "not a member of this channel"}` unless the agent's
slug is in `channel["members"]`. No target channel = unchanged (falls back
to the agent's own DM).

Fix 2 (`_resolve_slug`): two registry agents whose canonical ids strip to
the same slug must not share a session. After the local-agent collision
check, refuse with 403 `{"error": "handle collides with another registry
agent"}` when any OTHER active registry entry strips to the same slug (use
the registry store on app.state; read tinyagentos/agent_registry_store.py
for the listing method, do not invent one).

Tests added: reply with foreign channel_id -> 403; reply with trace_id of
message in foreign channel -> 403; reply into own DM -> 202 (positive
control); second registry agent with colliding slug -> 403.

📝 Walkthrough

Registry-agent reply handling now checks slug collisions and channel membership. Replies to channels resolved from channel_id or trace_id are rejected when the agent is not a member.

Changes: Agent chat authorization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve registry-agent slug collisions
tinyagentos/routes/agent_chat_session.py, tests/test_agent_chat_session_routes.py
Slug resolution rejects a later active registry agent when its canonical ID derives to a slug already used by an earlier agent. Tests cover accepted and rejected agents.
Resolve reply targets and check channel membership
tinyagentos/routes/agent_chat_session.py, tests/test_agent_chat_session_routes.py, docs/agent-coordination.md, changelog.d/tsk-wfkhb2-agent-chat-session-fix.md
Reply handling resolves the target from channel_id or trace_id. It returns 403 before recording a reply when the channel does not list the agent’s slug as a member. Tests cover these rejections and a reply without an explicit channel ID. Documentation and the changelog describe the checks.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fail closed when the trace lookup raises in the reply membership check.

_resolve_target_channel swallows an exception from get_message and returns None. The route then skips the channel membership check and passes the reply to the bridge. The bridge repeats the same lookup and, on success, writes the reply to that channel. The bridge does not check membership. A transient store error on the route's lookup can therefore let a non-member agent post into a channel it does not belong to.

335-341: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add positive tests for replies into a member channel.

The two new membership tests cover only the rejection path. Both expect a 403 for a non-member target. No test in this file posts a reply to a channel the agent belongs to and expects a 202. The own-DM test sends no target, so the membership check does not run there. A regression that rejects every resolved target with the same message would still pass both 403 tests and the DM test.

Add a test where the agent is a member of the target channel:

  • Send a reply with channel_id for that channel. Assert status 202 and that record_reply is awaited with the agent slug.
  • Send a reply with trace_id for a message in that channel. Assert the same result.

Fail closed when the registry lookup raises.

When registry.list_all(status="active") raises, the except Exception branch sets active_agents = []. The collision loop then does not run, and _resolve_slug returns the slug. A later agent whose canonical_id strips to the same slug as an active agent is admitted. The collision check exists to reject that case, so this fallback removes the protection it was added to provide.

The admitted agent can take over the first agent's session. BridgeSessionRegistry.subscribe(slug) calls _get_or_create(slug), pushes _DISCONNECT into the current subscriber's queue, and replaces session.queue with a new queue. Later calls to enqueue_user_message(slug, ...) then write to the new queue. The first agent's stream ends, and user messages for that slug can reach the later agent.

The takeover needs an active subscription on the first agent. Without one, the later agent receives a new empty session and no earlier stream is affected.

Lead review: lead-blocked (head 17a3a0c), fix-forward card tsk-bnohyn follows

Read the card first, then the diff and the in-house/CodeRabbit findings.

  • The in-house BLOCK is WRONG: agent_registry_store.register derives the slug from display_name (falls back to framework), not from the handle, so two agents registered as "Shared Name" do collide and test_second_registry_agent_with_colliding_slug_gets_403 is a valid test. The red fence shows it failing on the base, and the fix passes it.
  • CI never ran on this head: only the pull_request_target gates reported (Gate integrity, Gitar, automerge skipped). Cause: the branch conflicts with dev (compare says 447 behind, merge-tree conflicts in tests/test_agent_chat_session_routes.py only; the route and docs auto-merge), and GitHub builds no merge ref for a conflicted PR. An absent check set is UNKNOWN, not green.
  • CodeRabbit Major is REAL: _resolve_slug sets active_agents = [] when registry.list_all raises, so the collision check is skipped and the agent is admitted (fail-open on the security check it adds).
  • Unknown target channel passes through: when get_channel returns None the reply is still recorded, and the bridge writes it into a channel id that does not exist.

Follow-up (dev merge resolving the test file by keeping both sets, 503 on registry error, 403 on unknown channel, two red-first tests, the in-house NITs) is carded as tsk-bnohyn on BASE exec/tsk-wfkhb2. The lead resolved the dev conflict by hand (merge 42256ac, import-only conflict, both sides kept, 15/15 locally) so CI now reports on this PR. This PR merges only after that lands and CI has actually reported.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject an unknown target channel before recording the reply.

When get_channel(target_channel_id) returns None, the route skips the membership check and calls record_reply. An agent can therefore submit an arbitrary unknown channel_id and receive 202 without being a member of any resolved channel. Reject an unknown channel instead of treating it as authorized. Reject an unavailable channel store rather than skipping the check.
