fix-forward #3940 (tsk-wfkhb2): fail closed on registry errors and unknown channels in the agent reply route - #3942
Conversation
Fix 1 (route only, tinyagentos/routes/agent_chat_session.py, before
`record_reply`): work out the target channel the same way `_handle_reply`
does (body `channel_id`; else the channel of the message `trace_id` names,
via `request.app.state.chat_messages.get_message`). If there is a target
channel, load it with `request.app.state.chat_channels.get_channel` and
answer 403 `{"error": "not a member of this channel"}` unless the agent's
slug is in `channel["members"]`. No target channel = unchanged (falls back
to the agent's own DM).
Fix 2 (`_resolve_slug`): two registry agents whose canonical ids strip to
the same slug must not share a session. After the local-agent collision
check, refuse with 403 `{"error": "handle collides with another registry
agent"}` when any OTHER active registry entry strips to the same slug (use
the registry store on app.state; read tinyagentos/agent_registry_store.py
for the listing method, do not invent one).
Tests added: reply with foreign channel_id -> 403; reply with trace_id of
message in foreign channel -> 403; reply into own DM -> 202 (positive
control); second registry agent with colliding slug -> 403.
RED-PROOF:

LEAD REVIEW (taOS-dev, 2026-10-24 ~01:3xZ) on head c77da1d: PASS. Card tsk-bnohyn, base exec/tsk-wfkhb2 42256ac (ancestor verified; new commits on top, nothing amended below the base). Diff vs base: agent_chat_session.py +10/-4, tests +31, one changelog fragment. Every hunk maps to the card: item 2 (registry exception -> logger.warning + 503, loop never reached), item 3 (unknown target channel -> 403, record_reply not reached), both NITs (unused slug parameter dropped at its one call site; comment now cites the actual ORDER BY id query). bridge_session.py untouched. Tests: TestChatSessionSlugRegistryError::test_registry_list_all_raises_returns_503_and_no_reply (AsyncMock side_effect RuntimeError, asserts 503 and record_reply.assert_not_called) and TestChatSessionUnknownChannel::test_reply_unknown_channel_id_gets_403 (channel_id chan-does-not-exist -> 403, record_reply not called). Both named in the RED fence in the commit body (2 failed, 15 passed), both present in the PR tree, 17 passed on this head locally. The positive control (own DM -> 202) is unchanged. Note, not blocking: the 403 branch lives inside This PR is the CHAIN TOP over #3940 (tsk-wfkhb2) and lands it by inclusion; the lead-blocked on #3940 is answered here. Labels: security + needs-jay (agent auth path waits for Jay). Still owed before gate_merge: CodeRabbit artefact on c77da1d (currently processing) and a green shard set. On merge: close tsk-wfkhb2 and tsk-bnohyn by hand. |

Return an error when the trace lookup fails.
If chat_messages.get_message(trace_id) raises, this code treats the failure as a reply without a target channel. self_chat_reply then calls record_reply and returns 202. The caller receives an acceptance even though the route could not check the requested channel. Return 503 before recording the reply when the lookup fails.

CodeRabbit ADJUDICATION (taOS-dev, 2026-10-24 ~01:5xZ), one Major on head c77da1d (agent_chat_session.py:172, trace lookup failure treated as "no target channel" -> record_reply + 202): REAL and PRE-EXISTING, the except branch is unchanged from base 42256ac; same class as the registry fail-open this PR fixes. Carded as fix-forward tsk-4wadcj (BASE exec/tsk-bnohyn, p80): return 503 from _resolve_target_channel when get_message raises, isinstance check in self_chat_reply, RED-FIRST test with AsyncMock(side_effect=RuntimeError) asserting 503 and record_reply not called. Lead review PASS stands; merge-hold unchanged (Jay To do job-261024-29fd93). |
