CARD TITLE (intent, not commit subject): fix-forward #3934 (tsk-3siko5): hard gh refusal bypassed by chroot root operand, exec -a NAME, and env -S split strings (3 CodeRabbit security findings, measured on head d183ed7)

Autonomous build of board card tsk-zgkahd.

REVISION: built on exec/tsk-3siko5 (cut at d183ed709d9f7cffc604c6c7dda6ffe15d1c253b), not on dev. That branch's
commits are ancestors of this one. Verified by git merge-base --is-ancestor
before the PR was opened.

Fix three hard-refusal bypasses in claude_code_guard.py

  1. chroot root operand: when the root path basename matches a wrapper
program (e.g. /tmp/timeout -> timeout), it was mistakenly treated as a
new wrapper. Fix: consume the root operand before the WRAPPER_PROGRAMS
check when wrapper==chroot and wrapper_skip_root is set.

  2. exec -a NAME: exec was not in _WRAPPER_OPTS_WITH_VALUE, so -a value
was not skipped. Fix: add exec:-a to the table and handle -aNAME
    attached form like sudo -uuser.

  3. env -S/--split-string: the split string was skipped as an option value
but not parsed for nested commands. Fix: recursively run commands() on
the split string and add its keys; fail closed (add env -S sentinel)
when the string contains $, backslash, or fails to parse.

RED-PROOF (failing tests before fix):

VERDICT: PASS

  • NIT: tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py:317-326 exec -aNAME attached form handling is inside if name in WRAPPER_PROGRAMS: block; verify this executes for option tokens (modeled after sudo branch at L311-315 which has same structure)
  • NIT: tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py:373-379 generic _WRAPPER_OPTS_WITH_VALUE handling only matches exact option names, not attached forms; exec -aNAME relies on wrapper-block handling which may not trigger for option tokens

Summary by Gitar

  • Wrapper handling:
    • commands() now records wrapper programs and skips their option values so the wrapped program is still checked
  • Hard refusal:
    • refusal() checks parsed keys so g""h and 'gh' are refused like gh and git push
  • Fail-closed hook:
    • main() prints the refusal and exits with code 2 on any unexpected exception

This will update automatically on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Command checks now recognize commands run through shell wrappers, helping blocked-command protections work even when commands use alternate forms.
    • Ambiguous or unparseable wrapper commands are refused rather than allowed through.
    • When command rules cannot be loaded, the guard now refuses the command and exits safely.
    • Ordinary commands run through wrappers continue to be allowed when they are not blocked.

…-closed main

### Fixed
- Wrapper programs (env, nice, nohup, timeout, xargs, sudo, doas, exec, command, builtin, time, stdbuf, setsid, ionice, chroot, busybox) no longer hide the real program in the shell profile: the wrapper's key is recorded and the wrapped program is also checked.
- Hard refusal for gh and git push now also applies to parsed command keys, catching escapes like g""h pr list and 'gh' pr list.
- The hook's main() now fails closed on any exception: it prints the refusal to stderr and exits with code 2.

📝 Walkthrough

The command guard now parses commands behind supported wrappers and applies refusal checks to parsed command keys. The main entry point returns the standard refusal with status 2 when an unexpected exception occurs.

Changes: Command guard

Layer / File(s) Summary
Wrapper command parsing
tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py, tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py
The parser recognizes wrapper programs, skips wrapper options and relevant values, and processes the wrapped program. It handles timeout durations, chroot root directories, and env -S split strings. Tests cover wrapper parsing and option-value handling.
Parsed-key refusal checks
tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py, tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py
Refusal checks now include parsed gh commands, git push, and env -S. Tests cover blocked commands behind wrappers and ordinary wrapped-command controls.
Fail-closed error handling
tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py, tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py, changelog.d/tsk-lzyw3v-claude-code-guard-wrappers.md
main() prints the standard refusal and returns 2 after an unexpected exception. A test covers a rule-loading exception. The changelog records the guard changes.

Lead review: PASS with a carded residue (head dfe31e4)

Measured with the real hook payload dict through refusal() on three trees: PR base d183ed7, origin/dev d6bafcc, and this head. Controls on every tree: ls -la allowed, gh pr merge 1 refused.

case base d183ed7 dev d6bafcc head dfe31e4
chroot /tmp/timeout g""h pr merge allowed allowed REFUSED
exec -a masked g""h pr merge allowed allowed REFUSED
exec -amasked g""h pr merge allowed allowed REFUSED
env -S 'g""h pr merge' allowed allowed REFUSED
env -Sg""h allowed allowed REFUSED
env -S '$X pr merge' (fail-closed) allowed allowed REFUSED
env -S 'ls -la' / chroot /tmp/timeout ls / exec -a foo ls allowed allowed allowed

All three carded bypasses are closed, benign wrapper forms stay allowed, and the red fence names the three tests that ship in the diff. Test file 39/39 locally.

Residue of the SAME class, pre-existing on base and dev, still allowed on this head (so not a regression): clustered short flags ending in a value-taking letter, and chroot long options with a separate value:
exec -la masked g""h pr merge, exec -ca masked g""h pr merge, sudo -Eu root g""h pr merge, sudo -nu root g""h pr merge, chroot --userspec root:root /tmp/x g""h pr merge, chroot --groups g /tmp/x g""h pr merge (bash and sudo accept these clustered forms; verified).

Carded as tsk-r3knpi (fix-forward, BASE exec/tsk-zgkahd, RED-FIRST, parametrized tests). merge-hold here because the top of this chain (3938 carries #3934 and #3932 by inclusion) is a security path: Jay decides whether it lands now with the residue carded or after tsk-r3knpi's PR. The CodeRabbit comment on this head still reads "Currently processing", so no bot artefact yet.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Name the failure in the fail-closed handler. Do not report a GitHub refusal.

The new except Exception block at tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py:477-480 blocks every unexpected error. It prints only REFUSAL, which says the agent may not run git push or gh. An internal failure, such as an exception from rule loading, then looks like a policy refusal. Nothing else records the exception type or message. For a benign command such as ls, the user and the operator see the GitHub-policy text, and the cause is lost.

The block still returns exit code 2, so fail-closed behavior is kept. Only the message is wrong. The handler should name the failure and state that it is not a policy refusal:

Add a profile-deny regression test for the env -S 'ls -la' split-string key.

The benign env -S control at tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py:393-394 calls only refusal(). refusal() does not read the profile allow or deny sets. No test asserts that the ls key from an env -S split string reaches profile_refusal(). If a later change stops emitting ls for this input, the suite still passes. A profile that denies ls and allows env would then permit the command.

Current behavior is correct. The regression coverage is missing.

Add a regression test for the split git push spelling.

The new tests check git push only in its literal form. The raw _GIT_PUSH check catches that form before the parsed-key check runs. Removing the parsed git push check at tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py:437 would leave every git push test in this file passing. The split spelling git p""ush origin main has no literal push, so the raw check misses it. commands() joins p""ush into push, which yields the git push key. Only the parsed-key check can refuse it, and no test covers that path.

Assert that the fail-closed path writes a diagnostic to stderr.

test_main_fails_closed_on_exception checks only the exit code. When rule loading raises an unexpected exception, main() reaches the outer except Exception: handler, which prints a message to stderr before it returns 2. The test does not check stderr. Removing that print would still pass the test, because the exit code stays 2. Assert that stderr is written, without matching the exact message text.

Parse sudo -p and chroot --userspec value operands so the gh block sees the real program.

commands() skips only the value options that sudo, doas, and chroot already list. -p (sudo) and --userspec (chroot) are not in those lists. The following word is then taken as the program, so the real program is ignored as an argument. Quote removal makes g""h the token gh, which avoids the raw-text regex.

Traces:

  • sudo -p masked g""h pr merge gives the keys sudo and masked. No gh key is added, so refusal() returns None.
  • chroot --userspec root:root / g""h pr merge gives the keys chroot and /. The root:root word is consumed as the root directory, so gh is missed.

The sudo path runs gh only if sudo authorizes the call without a password prompt. The chroot path needs root privilege. The hard gh block is still bypassed in both cases. The existing tests cover sudo -u and chroot ROOT, but not these two options.

Fix: add the value options to _WRAPPER_OPTS_WITH_VALUE. The sudo branch falls through to that check for tokens it does not handle itself.

Audit the other sudo options that take a value, such as -r, -t, -T, -U, -D, and -R, against sudo(8) in the same change. This edit covers only -p. Add regression cases next to the existing chroot bypass test in tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py.

Clear skip_next in the new env -S split-string branch.

The branch at tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py:196-208 consumes the split string, then runs continue while skip_next is still True. The next token is then discarded. For env -S 'FOO=bar' g""h pr merge, the parser returns ["env", "pr"] and omits gh. refusal() then allows the command, even though it runs gh pr merge.

This applies when the hook runs without --rules, which is the case when shell_rules is None (tinyagentos/claude_code_runtime.py:132-139). When a shell profile is configured, profile_refusal refuses pr as an undecided program. That refusal is not a gh block, and it does not stop this bypass for a profile that allows pr.

Split env -S attached values drop the pending wrapper, so gh passes the hard refusal.

For env -Stimeout 60 g""h pr merge, the outer parser never records gh as a program. The -S branch parses timeout in a separate commands() call, adds only its returned keys, and leaves the outer wrapper set to env. The next token, 60, clears that state and becomes a program key. gh then arrives while expect is false, so it is skipped as an argument. The recorded keys are env, timeout, and 60. refusal() matches none of them.

The bypass scope depends on --rules:

  • Without --rules, no profile gate applies. The command runs once the hard refusal passes.
  • With --rules, profile_refusal() refuses undecided keys and queues them as asks. The command runs only after the user allows env, timeout, and 60. The production route passes rules on every turn.

Remedy direction: in the split-string sub-call only, report failure when the parse ends with a wrapper that still needs an operand. The outer env branch then adds env -S, which refusal() blocks. Do not change the return value of the top-level commands(). refusal() skips its key checks when the value is None, and profile_refusal() treats None as unparseable. Add a regression test for env -Stimeout 60 g""h pr merge.

Detail: which gate is bypassed

refusal() is the hard block. It applies whether or not --rules is present. The profile is a user-consent gate. This bypass defeats the hard block. With --rules, the impact depends on the user allowing env, timeout, and 60.
