CARD TITLE (intent, not commit subject): fix-forward #3938 (tsk-zgkahd): hard gh refusal still bypassed by clustered short flags (exec -la NAME, sudo -Eu USER) and chroot --userspec/--groups with a separate value

Autonomous build of board card tsk-r3knpi.

REVISION: built on exec/tsk-zgkahd (cut at dfe31e4106d21ad80566b16542d28f28fec50678), not on dev. That branch's
commits are ancestors of this one. Verified by git merge-base --is-ancestor
before the PR was opened.

test: harness-measured red for tsk-r3knpi

RED-FIRST proof measured by the harness (measure_red.sh): the changed tests run
against product code at base dfe31e4, then against this branch.

address in-house review findings for tsk-r3knpi

fix: close hard refusal bypass for clustered short flags and chroot long options

  • Added short option letter sets for wrapper programs that take values (exec, sudo, doas)
  • Extended chroot wrapper options to include --userspec and --groups
  • Enhanced wrapper parsing to handle clustered short flags (e.g., -la, -Eu) and GNU long options with separate values
  • All 47 tests pass

Closes #3938

VERDICT: BLOCKER

  • BLOCKER: tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py: Missing test coverage for the actual reported chroot bypass cases. The card lists two separate-value forms as ALLOWED-on-head (must become REFUSED): chroot --userspec root:root /tmp/x g\"\"h pr merge and chroot --groups g /tmp/x g\"\"h pr merge. The test test_bypass_chroot_attached_forms only tests attached forms (--userspec=..., --groups=...), not the separate-value forms that are the actual vulnerability. Per card: "ONE parametrized test over (wrapper form x obfuscated program) for every ALLOWED line above" — 6 lines listed, only 4 covered in bypass tests.
  • BLOCKER: tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py: Missing positive control tests for benign chroot separate-value forms (chroot --userspec root:root /tmp/x ls, chroot --groups g /tmp/x ls) to ensure they stay ALLOWED.
  • NIT: tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py:65: Function name test_bypass_chroot_attached_forms mislabels the test — it tests attached forms, not the reported bypass (separate-value forms).
  • NIT: tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py:377-385: Attached-form handling uses break then falls through to generic if tok.startswith("-"): continue; clearer to use a flag or continue directly after the loop.

Summary by Gitar

  • Wrapper coverage:
    • Expanded WRAPPER_PROGRAMS and value-taking option sets so wrapped programs are still checked
  • Hard refusal:
    • Refuses gh and git push based on parsed command keys, catching g""h and 'gh'
  • Fail-closed hook:
    • main() now blocks with exit code 2 on any unexpected exception
  • Env split strings:
    • env -S and --split-string parse nested commands, failing closed on $ or backslash

This will update automatically on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Command checks now recognize commands hidden behind wrappers such as sudo, env, chroot, and timeout, including clustered options and split command strings.
    • Restricted gh and git push commands are now refused even when invoked through supported wrappers.
    • If a command check encounters an unexpected error, the request is refused rather than allowed through.

…-closed main

### Fixed
- Wrapper programs (env, nice, nohup, timeout, xargs, sudo, doas, exec, command, builtin, time, stdbuf, setsid, ionice, chroot, busybox) no longer hide the real program in the shell profile: the wrapper's key is recorded and the wrapped program is also checked.
- Hard refusal for gh and git push now also applies to parsed command keys, catching escapes like g""h pr list and 'gh' pr list.
- The hook's main() now fails closed on any exception: it prints the refusal to stderr and exits with code 2.

1. chroot root operand: when the root path basename matches a wrapper
program (e.g. /tmp/timeout -> timeout), it was mistakenly treated as a
new wrapper. Fix: consume the root operand before the WRAPPER_PROGRAMS
check when wrapper==chroot and wrapper_skip_root is set.

2. exec -a NAME: exec was not in _WRAPPER_OPTS_WITH_VALUE, so -a value
was not skipped. Fix: add exec:-a to the table and handle -aNAME
   attached form like sudo -uuser.

3. env -S/--split-string: the split string was skipped as an option value
but not parsed for nested commands. Fix: recursively run commands() on
the split string and add its keys; fail closed (add env -S sentinel)
when the string contains $, backslash, or fails to parse.

📝 Walkthrough

The guard now parses commands behind supported wrappers, checks parsed command keys for hard refusals, and returns status 2 when its main hook encounters an unexpected exception. Tests cover wrapper options, refusal cases, allowed commands, and exception handling.

Changes: Wrapper-aware command guard

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse wrapped commands
tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py, tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py, changelog.d/tsk-r3knpi-claude-code-guard-flag-clusters.md
commands() recognizes wrappers and skips their option values and operands, including clustered short options, chroot operands, and env -S split strings. Tests cover these parsing forms and benign wrapped commands.
Apply parsed-key refusals
tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py, tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py, changelog.d/tsk-lzyw3v-claude-code-guard-wrappers.md
refusal() checks parsed keys for gh, git push, and env -S. Tests cover refusal through wrapper forms and quoted command text.
Refuse on hook exceptions
tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py, tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py
main() catches unexpected exceptions, writes the refusal message to stderr, and returns status 2. A test checks the return status when rules loading raises.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3ccb0

Benign wrapped commands can be unnecessarily blocked, and internal hook failures report an unrelated GitHub policy restriction. These are bounded compatibility and diagnostic risks; existing security gaps also remain incompletely addressed.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: a hard gh refusal bypass through clustered short flags (exec -la NAME, sudo -Eu USER) and chroot options with a separate value. The raw summary and objectives confirm that the changeset adds wrapper-option parsing for these cases, along with env -S and fail-closed handling in main(). The title is long (171 characters, 25 words) and uses a ticket reference and a 'fix-forward' prefix, so it is not concise. It still describes a real and primary part of the change, so it passes.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#3938] Three objectives apply. Source at head 3ccb080 confirms each one.

  1. chroot root operand: In commands(), the check if wrapper == "chroot" and wrapper_skip_root: runs before the if name in WRAPPER_PROGRAMS: check. A root such as /tmp/timeout is consumed as the root operand and is not treated as the timeout wrapper.

  2. exec -a NAME: _WRAPPER_OPTS_WITH_VALUE["exec"] is {"-a"}. The exec branch in the wrapper block skips -a NAME (tok == "-a", sets skip_next) and the attached -aNAME form.

  3. env -S / --split-string: The -S, --split-string, -S<text>, and --split-string=<text> forms set env_split_string_pending or split the attached text. The split string is parsed with a recursive commands() call and its keys are added. A split string that contains $ or a backslash, or that fails to parse, adds the env -S key. refusal() refuses that key.

Additional items in the PR description are also present: clustered short flags through _WRAPPER_SHORT_OPTS_WITH_VALUE (for example exec -la, sudo -Eu), and chroot --userspec and --groups with a separate value through _WRAPPER_OPTS_WITH_VALUE["chroot"]. Tracing the code shows that chroot --userspec root:root /tmp/x g""h pr merge yields the gh key, and so does the sudo -Eu root and exec -la form.

Limitation: The diff of tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py could not be read because its changed blobs are missing from the checkout. Test coverage for these objectives is therefore not verified from source. The PASS rests on source tracing of tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py, which does not depend on the test file.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The guard changes relate to the wrapper-parsing objectives of #3938 and the stated card scope:

  • WRAPPER_PROGRAMS, the value-option tables, and the short-option tables support wrapper-aware parsing for the exec, chroot, and env -S fixes.
  • The refusal() parsed-key check (gh, git push, env -S) implements the hard refusal that the bypass fixes protect.
  • The main() try/except that returns exit 2 is not one of the #3938 items. It is a fail-closed hardening that matches the module docstring ("unreadable input is refused too (fail closed)"). It is treated as related, not unrelated.
  • One hunk moves a continue into the for i, ch in enumerate(tok[1:]) loop in the uniq short-cluster branch (near line 280). This is not part of the objectives. Its behavior is unchanged: a non-matching loop falls through to the same outer continue, and a break leads to the same result. It is a cleanup candidate, not a demonstrated behavior change.

The changelog entries describe the same changes. The test file diff could not be read, so test changes are not checked for scope. No change was shown to be unrelated to the linked objectives.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 9.09% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 22 functions across 2 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

GNU env -S runs the words from the split string, then appends the remaining command-line operands. The guard does not model this, and the gap leads to a bypass as well as the over-refusal.

  • Attached form, over-refusal. For env -S'echo' g""h, the split words are parsed by a nested commands() call. The env wrapper state stays set, so gh is recorded as a program key (tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py:386, then :409-416). refusal() refuses it (:468). env runs echo gh, so the refusal is not needed. Plain echo g""h is not refused.
  • Attached form, bypass. For env -S'git' p""ush, the keys are env, git, push. refusal() checks for the exact key git push (:468). The raw-text check needs the literal push (:39), and this command does not contain it. The command is allowed, and env runs git push.
  • Separate form, bypass. For env -S 'git' p""ush, the -S operand sets skip_next and env_split_string_pending (:364-366). The split branch at :205-217 does not clear skip_next. The operand push is then consumed as a skipped value. The keys are env and git, so the command is allowed, and env runs git push.

A plain env -S'git' push is refused by the raw-text check. The bypass needs an obfuscated push operand.

Clearing the wrapper state alone does not fix this. push would become a bare key, not git push, and the refusal would still miss it. The fix is one correction: the split words and the remaining operands must form one command stream. Lex the split string into the token sequence in place of the -S operand, so the remaining operands follow its words. git then sets the subcommand state, and push records git push. The separate-form skip_next leak should be removed in the same change. Keep the existing fail-closed checks for $, backslashes, and parse failures on the split string. Add tests for env -S'git' p""ush, the separate form, and env -S'echo' g""h, which should be allowed.

Replace the generic refusal text on unexpected errors with the exception type.

The outer except Exception in main() prints the git push/gh refusal for every unexpected error, including errors unrelated to git or gh. The exception is discarded, so the hook output does not show that an internal failure occurred. Print a message that names the failure type instead.

Add GNU time's value options to the wrapper tables.

time is in WRAPPER_PROGRAMS, but neither option table has an entry for it. The value of -f or -o is therefore not consumed. In profile mode, time -f '%e' ls then yields an undecided %e key. In time -f '%e' g""h pr merge, the gh word is not parsed as a key, so the hard refusal does not see it.

Add the separate-value options for the short-cluster and long-option paths:

Add a regression test for the separate-value chroot options.

The chroot refusal tests cover only the attached forms, --userspec=VALUE and --groups=VALUE. No test in tests/ covers --userspec VALUE or --groups VALUE. The guard's separate-value handling for these options therefore has no direct test. A regression in that handling can pass the current suite.

The static trace shows the expected behavior. With the separate-value handling in place, chroot --userspec root:root /tmp/x g""h pr merge yields the gh key, and refusal() returns a refusal. Without that handling, root:root is consumed as the chroot root, /tmp/x becomes the program, gh is dropped, and refusal() returns None. The attached-form tests still pass in that case, because --userspec=root:root does not use the separate-value branch.

Assert that the unexpected-exception path writes to stderr.

test_main_fails_closed_on_exception checks only the return code. The test patches builtins.open to raise RuntimeError, so the exception bypasses the inner handler and reaches the outer except Exception:, which prints to stderr and returns 2. A change that removes that print and keeps return 2 would still pass this test, so the blocked call would give the model no explanation.

Assert that stderr is non-empty rather than comparing it to REFUSAL. REFUSAL describes a git push or gh policy denial, so asserting it would lock in a misleading message for internal failures.

Refuse a quote-split gh after clustered env options.

env -iu FOO g""h pr merge is allowed. The raw _GH check matches only the unquoted word gh, so it does not match g""h. The command parser never records gh either. It treats -iu as a generic option and takes FOO as the program. gh then falls through as an argument. The recorded keys are [env, FOO], so refusal() returns None. GNU env reads -iu FOO as -i -u FOO, so the shell runs gh pr merge.

The literal form env -iu FOO gh pr merge is already refused by the raw check. The bypass requires the quote split.

This gap predates the PR. The base refusal() used only the raw _GH match, so the quote-split form was also allowed at the merge base. The parsed-key check added here refuses gh only when the parser records it. It does not cover this path. This is incomplete hardening of an existing gap, not a new bypass introduced by this change.

Without a shell profile, no other check applies. With a profile, FOO is treated as undecided and refused. An allowed name in that position, such as env -iu <allowed-name> g""h ..., still passes.

Add an env entry with u and C to the clustered-value table. Do not add S. The cluster check runs before the env -S handler, and an S cluster would consume the split string. The "S" in tok guard keeps S clusters on the existing handler.

Lead review: PASS with a carded residue (head 3ccb080)

Measured with the real hook payload dict through refusal() on origin/dev d6bafcc, #3938's head dfe31e4 and this head. Controls on every tree: ls -la allowed, gh pr merge 1 refused. All 37 check runs on this head are green, CodeRabbit left an inline review on it.

case dev #3938 head this head
exec -la masked g""h pr merge / exec -ca ... / exec -cla ... allowed allowed REFUSED
sudo -Eu root g""h pr merge / sudo -nu ... / sudo -Enu ... allowed allowed REFUSED
doas -nu root g""h pr merge allowed allowed REFUSED
chroot --userspec root:root /tmp/x g""h pr merge / --groups g ... allowed allowed REFUSED
sudo -p P g""h pr merge (CodeRabbit on #3938) allowed allowed REFUSED
benign: exec -la foo ls, sudo -Eu root ls, chroot --userspec root:root /tmp/x ls, env -S "ls -la" allowed allowed allowed

All six carded lines are closed and the separate-value chroot forms the in-house reviewer flagged as untested ARE fixed (measured above); the missing tests are folded into the follow-up.

Residue, every line of it also allowed on origin/dev (there the whole wrapper was opaque, keys ['env'] / ['sudo']), so nothing is a regression. Adjudicated REAL from the CodeRabbit Majors on #3938 and here:

  • env -S 'ls' g""h pr merge (skip_next never cleared after the split string), env -Stimeout 60 g""h pr merge (sub-parse ends on a wrapper), env -iu FOO g""h pr merge (clustered env -u), sudo -a pam ... / sudo -c cls ... / sudo -R /x ... (value options missing from the sudo set).

Carded as tsk-jaxit5 (fix-forward, BASE exec/tsk-r3knpi, RED-FIRST in the commit body, tests for the chroot separate-value forms included). needs-lead-review removed; merge-hold + needs-jay set because this PR is now the top of a security chain (carries #3938, #3934 and #3932 by inclusion) and Jay decides whether it lands now with the residue carded or after tsk-jaxit5.
