CARD TITLE (intent, not commit subject): fix-forward #3945 (tsk-bmcphm): claude_code shell guard misses gh behind time -f/-o and xargs --process-slot-var, env clustered-S detection eats the next word (CodeRabbit on 7ce5995, all pre-existing on dev)

Autonomous build of board card tsk-gdxqyz.

REVISION: built on exec/tsk-bmcphm (cut at dcf0fae354d2706137d7d7bfff8a2799dfc533c8), not on dev. That branch's
commits are ancestors of this one. Verified by git merge-base --is-ancestor
before the PR was opened.

fix: shell guard fixes for time/xargs wrappers, env clustered S, unparseable msg, param expansion

  • Add missing 'time' wrapper options (-f, --format, -o, --output) and xargs
--process-slot-var so obfuscated gh behind these wrappers is refused
  • Fix env clustered -S handling to only trigger on single-dash short-option
clusters (e.g., -iS, -iSls), not on bare words like MAKES or MyScript.sh
  • Unparseable commands now return specific 'could not be parsed' refusal
message (UNPARSEABLE_REFUSAL) instead of generic git push/gh message
  • Command-position parameter expansions (g${X}h, ${GH}, g$X""h) are now
refused; path-prefix expansions ($HOME/.local/bin/uv) keep literal basename

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Shell command checks now recognize additional time and xargs options, and handle env -S only in supported short-option clusters.
    • Commands that cannot be parsed now receive a specific refusal message.
    • Parameter expansions in command names are refused, while path-prefix expansions retain the literal command name. Expansions in argument positions remain supported.

Walkthrough

The shell guard now recognizes additional time and xargs options, narrows when clustered env -S is detected, refuses command-position parameter expansions, and uses a specific message when command parsing fails.

Changes: Shell guard parsing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Wrapper option parsing
tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py, tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py
The parser handles value-taking time and xargs options. It detects env -S only in eligible single-dash short-option clusters. Tests cover these cases.
Command expansion and parse-failure refusals
tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py, tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py, changelog.d/tsk-gdxqyz-shell-guard-time-xargs-env-cluster.md
Command-position expansions with $ in the basename fail parsing. Parse failures return UNPARSEABLE_REFUSAL. Tests cover refusal behavior and allowed path-prefix and argument-position expansions. The changelog records the changes.

Possibly related PRs

  • jaylfc/taOS#3941: Both PRs modify wrapper parsing, including clustered env options and value-taking options.
  • jaylfc/taOS#3945: This PR refines shell-guard parsing from the same implementation, including time, xargs, and env -S cases.
  • jaylfc/taOS#3938: Both PRs change env -S parsing and fail-closed handling.

Suggested labels: security, merge-hold, needs-lead-review

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 0eee6

The shell guard now lets time -o FILE cmd through under profiles that deny output redirection, because the output file write is no longer tracked. This weakens a profile restriction that previously held. Fix before merging by recording an output-redirect key for time's output options.

In-house BLOCKER adjudicated: NOT A DEFECT. The card literal commands('$HOME/.local/bin/uv sync') == ['uv'] was the lead's error. Measured on the base dcf0fae: uv sync -> ['uv sync'], /usr/local/bin/uv sync -> ['uv sync'], $HOME/.local/bin/uv sync -> ['uv sync']. Name plus first arg is the established key shape, the path prefix changes nothing, and the test's ['uv sync'] is the correct control. Card body corrected (also the env MAKES and env MyScript.sh x literals: gh is an argument of MAKES, args after the program are not keys). The lane deviated correctly on all three.

Red-first verified honestly, not from the fence: copied the FINAL test file onto a worktree at dcf0fae -> 4 failed, 61 passed (the four tsk-gdxqyz tests); on 0eee600 -> 65 passed. py_compile under CPython 3.11 passes.

Probe table on head: env gh pr merge, sudo gh pr merge, /usr/bin/time -f %e g""h pr merge, g${X}h pr merge all refused; echo ${HOME} and the three uv sync spellings allowed with unchanged keys.

Merge path: wait for shards + CodeRabbit artefact on 0eee600, then gate_merge. Base dev is correct (fix-forward of #3945, already merged).

Track file writes from time -o and --output.

When a profile allows time and echo but denies OUTPUT_REDIRECT, time -o /tmp/result echo ok has only time and echo keys. The profile therefore permits a file write that its output rule would deny. GNU time overwrites the output file by default. Add OUTPUT_REDIRECT for both output-option forms, including attached values. (gnu.org)

Lead adjudication of the CodeRabbit Major on claude_code_guard.py:79 (time -o/--output file write not tagged output-redirect): REAL, PRE-EXISTING CLASS, NON-BLOCKING for this PR, folded as a follow-up card.

Measured through commands() on origin/dev vs this head:

  • time --output=/tmp/x echo ok -> ['time', 'echo'] on dev AND on head (no output-redirect either way)
  • tee /tmp/x -> ['tee'] on dev AND on head (same class, program-level write)
  • time -o /tmp/x echo ok -> dev ['time', 'x'] (a bogus basename key, not output-redirect), head ['time', 'echo']
  • echo ok > /tmp/x -> ['echo', 'output-redirect'] on both (the shell-redirect path is intact)

So no profile could have relied on -o producing an output-redirect key before this PR; the PR only stops the bogus x key. The gap (wrapper/program-level file writes: time -o, time --output[=], tee, and the attached-value forms) is carded as a RED-FIRST follow-up cut from dev once this merges. Merging.

Follow-up for the time -o/--output and tee output-redirect gap filed as card tsk-ewkvsx on the core board (RED-FIRST, cut from dev at or after 74dd1d6).
