CARD TITLE (intent, not commit subject): fix-forward #3941 (tsk-jaxit5): claude_code guard fails OPEN on an unparseable command ("${HOME}" in double quotes), env -iS clusters and sudo/env long value options still hide g""h (CodeRabbit Majors, measured pre-existing)

Autonomous build of board card tsk-bmcphm.

REVISION: built on exec/tsk-jaxit5 (cut at 5f582bdd98261c86ae3c43a24b7fd749c3948c7d), not on dev. That branch's
commits are ancestors of this one. Verified by git merge-base --is-ancestor
before the PR was opened.

VERDICT: BLOCK

  • BLOCKER: docs/changelog-fragments.md:1 Deleted documentation file not in scope; card only requests adding changelog.d fragment
  • BLOCKER: tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py:73-74 Removed -S and --split-string from _WRAPPER_OPTS_WITH_VALUE["env"] breaks non-clustered --split-string handling (regression); new clustered-S code at lines 377-387 incorrectly matches "S" in "--split-string" (sets split_string="plit-string")
  • BLOCKER: tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py:377-387 Clustered-S handler matches "S" anywhere in token, breaking --split-string standalone token; should only handle short-option clusters (tokens starting with - not --)
  • NIT: changelog.d/tsk-bmcphm-claude-code-guard-fail-closed-parse.md:2 Typo "optionsS" → "options"

Summary by Gitar

  • Wrapper handling:
    • Wrapper programs like env, timeout, sudo, and chroot now expose the wrapped program's key
    • Option values such as nice -n and sudo --host no longer hide the real program
  • Hard refusal:
    • gh and git push are refused on parsed command keys, catching g""h and 'gh'
    • env -S split strings are parsed recursively and fail closed on $ or backslash
  • Fail-closed main:
    • Unexpected exceptions in main() print the refusal and exit with code 2
  • Quoting:
    • ${...} inside double quotes is no longer treated as command substitution

This will update automatically on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved command checks for commands run through wrappers such as env, sudo, and chroot, including when options have separate or clustered values.
    • Fixed cases where wrapper options could obscure commands that should be blocked, including gh and git push.
    • The guard now refuses unparseable or unsafe env -S strings and unexpected errors instead of allowing the command to proceed.
    • Improved handling of command substitutions and wrapper aliases to reduce ways of bypassing command checks.

### Fixed
- Wrapper programs (env, nice, nohup, timeout, xargs, sudo, doas, exec, command, builtin, time, stdbuf, setsid, ionice, chroot, busybox) no longer hide the real program in the shell profile: the wrapper's key is recorded and the wrapped program is also checked.
- Hard refusal for gh and git push now also applies to parsed command keys, catching escapes like g""h pr list and 'gh' pr list.
- The hook's main() now fails closed on any exception: it prints the refusal to stderr and exits with code 2.

1. chroot root operand: when the root path basename matches a wrapper
program (e.g. /tmp/timeout -> timeout), it was mistakenly treated as a
new wrapper. Fix: consume the root operand before the WRAPPER_PROGRAMS
check when wrapper==chroot and wrapper_skip_root is set.

2. exec -a NAME: exec was not in _WRAPPER_OPTS_WITH_VALUE, so -a value
was not skipped. Fix: add exec:-a to the table and handle -aNAME
   attached form like sudo -uuser.

3. env -S/--split-string: the split string was skipped as an option value
but not parsed for nested commands. Fix: recursively run commands() on
the split string and add its keys; fail closed (add env -S sentinel)
when the string contains $, backslash, or fails to parse.

…e option bypasses

Fixes CodeRabbit Majors on #3938 and #3939 (tsk-r3knpi) measured through
refusal() with real hook payload dict {"tool_name": "Bash", "tool_input":
{"command": CMD}}; controls ls -la allowed, gh pr merge refused.

Changes:
A. In the skip_next block, the env_split_string_pending branch now sets
skip_next = False before continuing (it already clears
   env_split_string_pending).
B. Added _split_string_keys() helper that runs commands(text) and returns
None when result is None OR its last key is in WRAPPER_PROGRAMS (split
string ends on a wrapper needing an operand). Both env -S call sites
(separate value and attached -S<text>/--split-string=<text>) now use it.
C. Added "env": frozenset({"u", "C"}) to _WRAPPER_SHORT_OPTS_WITH_VALUE and
guarded the cluster check so env tokens containing "S" are not handled by
it (if wrapper in _WRAPPER_SHORT_OPTS_WITH_VALUE and not (wrapper ==
"env" and "S" in tok)), so -S clusters go to the existing env -S handler.
D. Added "a", "c", "R" to _WRAPPER_SHORT_OPTS_WITH_VALUE["sudo"] and
   "-a", "-c", "-R", "--auth-type", "--login-class", "--chroot" to
   _WRAPPER_OPTS_WITH_VALUE["sudo"] (created entry; keep -p/--prompt
   behaviour as is).
E. Added bypass tests for the new cases and positive controls; renamed
   test_bypass_chroot_attached_forms to test_bypass_chroot_option_forms.

Walkthrough

The guard now parses commands behind wrappers, handles env -S split-string operands, and applies hard refusals to parsed command keys. It rejects unsafe or unparseable split strings and returns the standard refusal with exit code 2 when main() encounters an unexpected exception.

Changes: Shell guard parsing and refusal

Layer / File(s) Summary
Wrapper option parsing
tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py, tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py, changelog.d/*claude-code-guard*.md
The parser identifies programs behind wrappers and skips wrapper options and their values, timeout durations, and chroot roots. Tests cover wrapper parsing and clustered option cases.
env split-string parsing
tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py, tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py, changelog.d/*claude-code-guard*.md
The parser recursively processes env -S operands. Unsafe or unparseable operands produce an env -S key. Double-quoted ${...} is no longer treated as command substitution.
Parsed-command refusal and fail-closed handling
tinyagentos/claude_code_guard.py, tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py, changelog.d/*claude-code-guard*.md
Hard refusals check parsed command keys, including gh and git push. Unexpected exceptions in main() print the standard refusal and return 2.

The lane's fix commit deleted docs/changelog-fragments.md (unrelated to the

Lead review: PASS on head 754162f (fix-forward of #3941, card tsk-bmcphm; this PR is now the chain top and carries #3941 + #3939 + #3938 + #3934 + #3932).

In-house BLOCK was correct: the lane's fix commit 32dad7b deleted docs/changelog-fragments.md (out of scope) and replaced two tsk-jaxit5 regression tests (test_bypass_env_clustered_short_options, test_bypass_sudo_short_options_with_value) instead of adding beside them. Restored all three verbatim from the base in 754162f and fixed the "optionsS" typo in the fragment; no guard code touched. Diff vs base 5f582bd is now exactly the card's three files.

Measured on the head through refusal() with the real hook dict payload (base 5f582bd in brackets):

24/24 rows match on the head, 13 mismatches on the base. python -m pytest -q tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py: 59 passed on the head (57 lane head + the 2 restored tests). Head moved to 7ce5995: merged origin/dev by hand (the PR was dirty against dev: both sides appended tests to tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py, both kept, 61 passed locally). Diff vs origin/dev is still exactly the card's three files, so the lead PASS above carries to this head. CodeRabbit artefact and shards are owed on 7ce5995 before gate_merge.

Correction to the line above: the diff vs origin/dev is the whole carried chain (6 files: #3941 and its ancestors are not on dev yet). The diff vs this PR's own base 5f582bd is the card's three files, which is what the lead PASS measured.

Fix the f-strings that are a SyntaxError on Python 3.11. The whole test module fails to import there.

The f-string expressions on these lines contain backslash escapes and reuse the outer " quote. Python 3.11 rejects both. The syntax is valid only from Python 3.12 (PEP 701). pyproject.toml declares requires-python >=3.11,<3.15.

On 3.11 this file cannot be collected. All tests in it fail, including the unrelated ones. The author reports passing runs, but those were probably on 3.12 or later.

Compute the value first. Then use a simple f-string.

Add time option values to _WRAPPER_OPTS_WITH_VALUE. The hard refusal misses gh behind time -f and time -o.

time is in WRAPPER_PROGRAMS, but _WRAPPER_OPTS_WITH_VALUE has no entry for it. GNU time takes -f FORMAT and -o FILE as separate values.

Trace for /usr/bin/time -f %e g""h pr merge:

  • -f is skipped as a generic option by the startswith("-") branch.
  • %e is then taken as the real program, so expect becomes False.
  • g""h is treated as an argument of %e.
  • commands() returns ['time', '%e'].
  • Neither the raw _GH regex nor the parsed-key check in refusal() fires, so the command is allowed.

This is the same bypass class that this PR closes for nice, ionice, stdbuf, xargs, and sudo. It matters most when no --rules profile is configured, because then only the hard refusal applies.

xargs --process-slot-var NAME also takes a separate value and is not in the xargs set.

Restrict the clustered S detection to short-option tokens.

The condition is wrapper == "env" and "S" in tok. It runs for every token reaching this point, including long options and the program word. It has no startswith("-") guard, and --split-string is lowercase, so it cannot match long options.

Consequences:

  • env --default-signal=SIGPIPE ls takes IGPIPE after the first S as a split string. It adds the bogus key IGPIPE. The same happens for --block-signal=SIGTERM and --ignore-signal=SIGINT.
  • env MyScript.sh x adds the key cript.sh, not MyScript.sh. A deny rule for MyScript.sh no longer matches.
  • A token that ends in S (for example env MAKES ls) sets skip_next. The next word is then consumed as a split string.
  • -uS is read as the S option. In GNU env, -u takes the rest of the token (S) as its value.

Profile mode asks the user about the bogus keys. Wrong keys in commands() also break deny matching.

Restrict the check to single-dash clusters. Stop at the first value-taking letter.

option tokens, stopping at the first value-taking short option before
considering S. Preserve the existing split-string handling for a valid clustered
S option, and leave long options and program arguments untouched.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Return a distinct refusal message for unparseable commands.

commands() returns None for any "$(...)", unterminated quote, or unknown git option. refusal() now returns the generic REFUSAL for all of these. That message says the agent may not run git push or gh.

This check runs even when no --rules profile is configured. Common commands such as echo "$(date)" and git commit -m "$(cat <<'EOF' ...)" are now blocked with a message that does not describe the cause. The agent cannot tell what to change and may retry blindly.

profile_refusal already has a specific message for this case. Reuse it here.

Update the refusal path that calls commands(command) so a None result returns a
distinct unparseable-command refusal instead of the generic REFUSAL. Define
UNPARSEABLE_REFUSAL alongside REFUSAL and reuse it in profile_refusal to keep
the message consistent.

The two assertion messages used backslash escapes and the outer quote
inside f-string expressions, which is a SyntaxError before Python 3.12
(PEP 701). pyproject declares requires-python >=3.11 and the scheduled
CI matrix runs 3.11, so the whole module failed to import there.
Compute the parsed keys first, then format them. Test-only change,
same assertions.

Red on 7ce5995 (python3.11 -m py_compile tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py):

```
  File "tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py", line 602
    )
    ^
SyntaxError: f-string expression part cannot include a backslash
```

After: compiles on 3.11; 61 passed on 3.13.

Lead adjudication of the 4 CodeRabbit findings on 7ce5995 (measured through refusal() with a real Bash hook payload, on this head and on origin/dev):

# Finding Verdict Action
1 tests: f-string backslash/quote reuse is a SyntaxError on 3.11 REAL, INTRODUCED by this PR (dev is 3.11-clean, scheduled CI runs 3.11) fixed in dcf0fae (test-only, same assertions; compiles on 3.11, 61 passed on 3.13)
2 time -f/-o, xargs --process-slot-var not in _WRAPPER_OPTS_WITH_VALUE REAL, PRE-EXISTING: /usr/bin/time -f %e g""h pr merge ALLOWED on head and on dev carded tsk-gdxqyz (fix-forward on exec/tsk-bmcphm)
3 env clustered-S check runs on every token REAL, PRE-EXISTING outcome: env MAKES g""h pr merge ALLOWED on head and on dev; env MyScript.sh x -> key cript.sh carded tsk-gdxqyz
4 generic refusal text for unparseable commands REAL, non-blocking (fail-closed is the card's intent; message only) folded into tsk-gdxqyz

Head is now dcf0fae. Merge waits for CodeRabbit on that head and green shards; Jay said go on 10-24 (To do a3708e).

Reject parameter expansion in command position.

commands() passes g${X}h to the refusal checks as a literal executable name. The raw check and parsed-key check therefore do not identify gh. When X is empty, shell expansion runs gh pr merge without the hard refusal.

Reject $ in the command-position token before deriving name. This keeps argument-position ${HOME} handling unchanged.

Suggested fix
+ if "$" in tok:
+ return None

Lead adjudication of the CodeRabbit review on dcf0fae (11:36Z): one outside-diff Major, "Reject parameter expansion in command position" (claude_code_guard.py:294-303).

Measured through refusal() with the Bash payload, on this head AND on origin/dev 306d39d:

head dcf0fae35
'g${X}h pr merge' keys=['g${X}h'] refused=False
'g$X""h pr merge' keys=['g$Xh'] refused=False
'${GH} pr merge' keys=['${GH}'] refused=False
'gh pr merge' keys=['gh'] refused=True (control)
'g""h pr merge' keys=['gh'] refused=True (this PR's fix)
dev 306d39d3a
'g${X}h pr merge' keys=['g${X}h'] refused=False
'g""h pr merge' keys=['gh'] refused=False (shows dev lacks this PR's fix)

REAL and PRE-EXISTING: dev allows the same commands, so this PR does not introduce it. Non-blocking for this PR; folded into the fix-forward card tsk-gdxqyz as item F5 (fix spec + test (d)). Nothing in this review touches the diff between 7ce5995 and dcf0fae (test-only 3.11 fix).

Lead review: PASS on head dcf0fae (card tsk-bmcphm; chain top over #3941/#3939/#3938/#3934/#3932).

Covers the two lead pushes since the 754162f PASS: 7ce5995 (origin/dev merged by hand, both-appended conflict in tests/test_claude_code_shell_profile.py kept both sides, 61 passed locally) and dcf0fae (test-only: py3.11 f-string SyntaxError fix, file compiles on 3.11). No guard code changed in either. CodeRabbit on dcf0fae: 1 outside-diff Major, adjudicated REAL + PRE-EXISTING above, folded into tsk-gdxqyz. Checks on head: 28 success, 2 skipped (automerge, re-run-on-stub-comment), 0 failed, shard (3.13, 4) completed success 11:55Z.

Removing merge-hold: its clearer was Jay's go on To do a3708e, given 11:21Z.
