feat: measure a file's real quality from its audio, and a quality page - #319
Implements RFC-016 in full (steps 2 to 4 of its order of work): a lossless file's real quality is measured from its audio, and a Quality page lists what the audio says against what the container claims.
The measurement (step 2)
src/quality/: FFmpeg decodes each lossless file to signed 32-bit integers on a pipe, at its own rate and on one thread. The desktop's wall search (waveflow_core::analysis::bandwidth) is ported unchanged into src/quality/bandwidth.rs; the only addition is that it hands back the averaged spectrum. Alongside it come the effective bit depth (an OR over every sample), a 256-byte quantised spectrum, and the spectrogram drawn on demand.
Held to the desktop: a unit test asserts the port's public constants (WALL_DB, LOSSY_CUTOFF_HZ, NYQUIST_MARGIN_HZ, BANDWIDTH_VERSION) equal the core's. An integration test measures the desktop's own test signals through waveflow_core::analysis::analyze_file and through the server's pipeline, and checks that both find the same wall.
track_quality (new migration, empty at upgrade, no rescan): one row per track, keyed by content (full_hash), analyser generation (QUALITY_VERSION) and FFmpeg build (a SHA-256 of the whole ffmpeg -version output, kept by media::check_tool). Boot deletes rows made by another generation or another FFmpeg, so reads call a row current on its hash alone.
The analyser (services::quality): runs in the background and never on the answering path. It wakes at boot, when a scan finishes, and on request. It measures WAVEFLOW_QUALITY_PARALLELISM files at once (default 1, 0 turns it off) and starts no file while a scan runs (ScanManager::scans_in_flight). Each file has a deadline of 60 s plus its duration, after which FFmpeg is killed. An unreadable file is recorded once per content and not retried until the file changes. Rows are written in batches of 16 under the writer gate.
The verdicts are SQL, computed where they are read, reusing the core's lossless_track_sql! and probable_fake_lossless_sql! verbatim: lossy_source, upsampled, padded, unreadable, silent, pending, consistent, lossy (an explicit list) and not_measured.
The routes (step 3)
GET /libraries/{id}/quality, GET /libraries/{id}/quality/tracks, GET /tracks/{id}/quality and GET /tracks/{id}/spectrogram are open to any member. POST /libraries/{id}/quality/analysis is for owners and managers; everyone else gets 404. Tenancy is enforced in the queries.
The spectrogram: Cache-Control: private, no-cache with an ETag. Access is checked on every request: before a 304, and before the bound of one per account and of the analysis's own bound plus one across the server, after which the route answers 429 with Retry-After.
"Needs attention" gains probable_fake_lossless.
The page (step 4)
Quality page under Library, for every member: per-verdict chips that filter (written in the address), a format filter, progress refreshed every ten seconds while files wait, and the list worst first. "Analyse again" is offered to owners and managers and asks for a second click.
Track properties gain "Real quality": the verdict in words, the numbers behind it, the averaged spectrum as an SVG line with the wall marked, and "Show the spectrogram".
The verdict is deliberately not added to song items or to the Subsonic façade.
One threshold measured, and the RFC amended
The first draft put upsampled at 24 kHz. Measured on FFmpeg's own resampler, the wall stands at 21.5–23.8 kHz with a steep filter, and at 25.7 kHz (from a 44.1 kHz source) or 28.0 kHz (from a 48 kHz source) with the default one. The threshold is therefore 30 kHz. Real music through the default resampler shows no wall at all, because its images come back within 15 dB, and reads as consistent. The RFC now says both, under a Revised line.
cargo test --all-features -j 2: 444 passed, 0 failed (before the deadline cap; the quality target, clippy and fmt were run again after it).
New quality integration target, 11 tests. Fixtures are made by FFmpeg from noise: a genuine FLAC, a FLAC made from a 128 kbps MP3, a 44.1 kHz file resampled to 96 kHz, a genuine 96 kHz file, a 16-bit signal in a 24-bit container, an MP3, and a FLAC with its frames zeroed. They cover moved versus changed files, a different FFmpeg or analyser, a running scan, tenancy on every route, spectrogram revalidation after a membership is removed, both bounds, and the "Needs attention" category.
Inversion: each of the 18 rules was removed in turn on a build that compiles, with backups named by full path; its test failed every time, and every file was restored byte for byte.
webapp: vitest (200), tsc, Biome (only the 7 existing warnings in refresh.css), bun run build, full Playwright suite on that build: 242 passed, 12 skipped (the per-project skips already on main).
On real files: this build was run on a copy of the dev database (VACUUM INTO, port 4611, the dev server untouched). It waited for the boot scan, then measured the 36 FLACs: 2 lossy_source (walls at 20.6 and 20.8 kHz), 12 padded (16 bits used of 24) and 22 consistent, exactly as the RFC predicted. The 129 lossy files were left alone.
After the commit, an automated security review flagged that the deadline (60 s plus the duration the file claims) could be stretched by a crafted header. It is now capped at 30 minutes (b88c8f8). The cap has no test, since one would have to hang FFmpeg for half an hour.

Documentation
La documentation décrit les critères d’analyse audio et de détection des fichiers suréchantillonnés.
FFmpeg decodes each lossless file in the background and the desktop's wall
search, ported from waveflow-core, finds where its highs stop; the effective
bit depth and a 256-band spectrum come from the same pass. Verdicts are SQL
over track_quality, reusing the core's own macros. Five routes serve them, a
spectrogram is drawn on demand, and Needs attention lists probable fake
lossless files (RFC-016).

…properties
Every member sees the library's files by what their audio says, worst first,
with filters by verdict and format; owners and managers can ask for the whole
library to be analysed again. A track's properties show the verdict, the
numbers behind it, the averaged spectrum and, on request, the spectrogram
(RFC-016).

Merge Risk: Low · up to a87eb
Silent tracks may show a misleading quality result, and short-timeout spectrogram requests may return the wrong timeout response. Both impacts are localized.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to a87eb
The new analysis and image requests have access checks, concurrency limits, and execution deadlines. No privilege escalation or cross-library disclosure was established. Live decoder upgrades and background shutdown behavior remain operational uncertainties.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A library member can consume one spectrogram slot at a time; owners and managers can invalidate their library's measurements and wake the shared analyzer. Resource contention can therefore affect the server instance across libraries, although these requests do not acquire cross-library read authority and concurrency is bounded.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Library summaries and lists require membership; track details and spectrogram selection include membership predicates. Spectrogram authorization precedes conditional 304 responses and resource admission. Reanalysis additionally uses the shared metadata-write role check within its transaction.
observed — Requests select catalogue tracks rather than supplying executable arguments or arbitrary paths. The reused path guard rejects non-normal relative components, symlinks, escapes from the canonical library root, and non-files. Decoder commands pass the resulting path as an argument without shell interpretation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Measurement uses an eight-chunk bounded channel, subprocess deadlines, and kill-on-drop; spectrogram permits are owned guards and subprocesses also use kill-on-drop. Inaccessible files remain pending, while completed decode failures become explicit unreadable results. The analyzer spawn block stores no cancellation token or join handle, leaving its shutdown ownership implicit.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make restart-on-decoder-change an explicit operational contract and connect analyzer cancellation and joining to server shutdown. These would clarify ownership and decoder-identity guarantees; they are not verified exploit findings.
