feat(quality): say where the analysis stands, and write each measurement as it finishes - #320
The Quality page could not say where the analysis stood. On the dev server it showed "0 of 36 lossless files analysed" for about forty seconds and then jumped, because measurements were written sixteen at a time and a debug build measures a file in about 2.6 s. The analysis was working the whole time; nothing said so. This PR makes it visible.
The summary carries the analyser's state.GET /api/v2/libraries/{id}/quality gains analysis: { state, in_flight, pass_started_at, last_measured_at }. state is one of:
running: a pass is measuring;
waiting_for_scan: a scan of a library the caller belongs to holds the analysis back;
queued: files are pending and the analyser is not on them;
idle: nothing of this library is pending;
off: the operator turned the analysis off.
A scan is named only to someone who can see it. A scan of somebody else's library also holds the analysis back, but it is not confirmed to people outside that library: their files read as queued. To support this, ScanManager now knows which libraries are being scanned (begin_scan(library_id), is_scanning).
Each measurement is written as it finishes, in its own short transaction under the writer gate, instead of sixteen at a time. The count moves file by file, and a restart loses at most the files in flight. Decision 5's guarantee holds: a row is written only while the track still holds the content it measured.
The page shows a status line, a polite live region with a pulsing dot that stays still under reduced motion:
"Analysing now: 12 of 36 done, 1 in progress.";
"Waiting for the scan to finish before analysing.";
"Queued…";
"Idle. Last file analysed …".
It asks again every three seconds while the analysis works and stops at rest.
RFC-016 is amended: a Revised line, decision 4 (writes), decision 10 (status line and refresh), and the surface (the shape of analysis and its states).
Verification
cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -D warnings: clean. cargo test --all-features -j 2: 449 passed, 0 failed.
The quality integration target gains four tests:
queued, then waiting for a scan of the library, then idle with a last time;
a pass over three one-minute files, watched while it runs: it reports running with one file in flight, and the row count moves one file at a time before the pass ends;
a scan of a stranger's library holds the pass back, but reads as queued, not waiting_for_scan;
the route carries analysis.
Inversion: each of the eight protections was removed in turn on a build that compiles, with backups named by full path; each made its test fail, and git diff --stat was identical before and after. The eight are: per-file writes (redone as a single transaction for the whole page, which is what the first version did), running, files in flight per library, naming the caller's own scan, not naming a scan they cannot see, idle, the page stopping at rest (vitest), and the page polling while the analysis works (Playwright on a fresh build).
webapp: vitest 205, tsc, Biome (only the 7 existing warnings in refresh.css), bun run build, full Playwright suite on that build: 246 passed, 12 skipped (the per-project skips already on main). Two new Playwright tests: the status line moves from "1 of 3" to "2 of 3" and then to "Idle", no request follows at rest, and WCAG holds; and the waiting-for-scan sentence.
Three more problems found on the dev server, and one security finding.
"Analyse again" was offered while a pass ran. After leaving the page and coming back, the page showed it as if nothing were running. It is now offered only when the server, asked since the page was opened, says the analysis is idle. Whether a pass runs is the server's to say; a remounted page remembers nothing.
The header contradicted the list ("0 of 36" over rows with verdicts). This was not a counting bug: on the dev database both queries agree, with 36 rows of one version and one decoder. The client held both answers for its 30-second cache, and a filter fetched a list fresher than its header. Both queries are now asked again on every visit, and a change of filter asks for the header beside the new list. A new integration test, the_summary_counts_what_the_list_lists, checks that for every verdict the summary counts exactly what the list carries, with measured, pending and unavailable files mixed.
Each row shows the track's cover before its title. Quality rows are song items, so artwork_hash and its tenancy were already there.
Security (automated review): a hidden scan changed what an outsider saw. A scan of somebody else's library made a running pass read as queued. Now such a scan changes nothing: the pass reads as running, and the file it picked counts as in flight from the moment it is picked, before any wait. queued now means only "between passes".
Verification for this part:
cargo test --all-features -j 2: 450 passed.
vitest 205, tsc, Biome (the 7 existing warnings).
Full Playwright suite on a fresh build: 251 passed, 13 skipped. That is the 12 existing per-project skips plus the new visit test on mobile, since it walks the desktop sidebar.
Each of the 7 new protections was removed in turn on a build that compiles, with backups named by full path; each made its test fail, and git diff --stat was unchanged. The 7 are: the hidden scan, in flight from the pick, summary equal to the list, no offer while a pass runs, the header refreshed on a filter change, the header refreshed on a visit, and covers in rows. The cover inversion first failed to compile because of an unused import; it was redone with the component kept and not rendered.

…ent as it finishes
The quality summary carries the analyser's state for the library: running
with its files in flight, waiting for a scan the caller can see, queued,
idle with when the last file was measured, or off. The page shows it in a
status line and asks again every three seconds while the analysis works, and
not at rest. Measurements are written one by one, so the count moves file by
file instead of sixteen at a time (RFC-016).

Walkthrough

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 5cd2a
No merge-blocking issue was established. The quality list refreshes as measurements arrive during reanalysis.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 5cd2a
Library access checks and content-consistent writes remain intact. The new status exposes shared analyzer timing to authorized library members, but no access to another library’s content or additional privileges was established. The intended privacy of that shared timing remains unclear.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — A caller must be an authenticated member of the requested library. Its in-flight count and last-measured timestamp are library-scoped. With pending or in-flight work, however, running and pass_started_at expose the shared runtime’s pass activity and start time, potentially reflecting work across libraries served by that runtime. No foreign library identifier accompanies that timing.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The inspected summary and reanalysis paths do not establish an authorization bypass or privilege gain. The newly observable global pass timing is a bounded metadata exposure, not evidence of access to another library’s tracks or scan identity.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — GET requires read authentication and a matching library_member row, returning NotFound without membership. Reanalysis separately requires write authentication and curated-library authorization before deleting measurements. The page’s owner/manager and idle-state checks supplement rather than replace those server controls.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The persistence change retains the existing atomic track-identity and content-hash predicate. Smaller transactions narrow each write failure’s scope without granting the measurement producer authority to overwrite a result for different current content.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Explicitly classify shared analyzer timing as either acceptable operational metadata for library members or library-private activity. If library-private timing is required, derive the exposed start time from library-specific activity rather than the global pass. This is a design clarification, not a verified vulnerability.

…ist together, offer a new analysis only at rest, and show covers
A pass held back by a scan of somebody else's library still reads as running
to the caller, and its file as in flight. The summary and the list are asked
again on every visit and together when the filter changes, so the header
never contradicts the rows. Analyse again is offered only when the server
says the analysis is idle. Each row shows the track's cover.
