feat: an incremental scan that reads only what changed (RFC-018) - #324
Implements RFC-018: a scan that reads only the files that changed, and keeps going when one folder cannot be read.
What it does
Check before reading (decision 1):
Each file's size and modification time are compared with what the catalogue holds, along with a signature of its .lrc/.txt sidecars. The catalogue facts come from one query per scan.
A file is skipped from a stat alone, without being opened, when it is unchanged, its track is available and its relocation hint is set.
Any other file, and every file of a full scan, is read as before. The usual matching (path, then content hash, then relocation hint) still applies.
The signature (lrc:<size>:<mtime>|txt:<size>:<mtime>, with - for an absent sidecar) goes in a new column, track.sidecar_signature. It is never NULL once written.
NULL means "never computed", so the first scan after the upgrade reads every file once.
Streaming in path order (decision 2):
buffered replaces buffer_unordered + collect. Results are applied as they arrive, in batches of 25 that commit on their own.
Memory therefore holds a few batches instead of the whole library, and a scan that dies keeps what it already wrote.
Fault-tolerant discovery (decision 3):
A folder that cannot be read is logged by its path relative to the library, counted in the scan's errors, and skipped.
The tracks under it are marked seen by this scan without touching their availability, so they are not marked missing.
Only the library root failing to open fails the scan.
New command waveflow-server database rescan-full: the next scan of every library reads every file. It covers a file rewritten in place with the same size and modification time. The RFC named an database rescan --full command that did not exist; it now names this one.
Documentation: a "Scanning" section in docs/operations.md.
Tests
Four scanner tests in tests/scanner.rs:
a file rewritten with the same size and modification time is not read (its hash does not move) until a full scan;
a sidecar added, then removed, next to an unchanged file is noticed;
a NULL signature is filled by the next scan;
an unreadable folder does not mark its tracks missing. This one is Unix only (chmod 000), so it did not run on Windows here; CI on Ubuntu runs it.
One CLI test for database rescan-full.
Inversions: I removed each protection in turn, on a build that compiled; all 5 inversions were caught.
unchanged file not read
sidecars compared
signature recorded after a read
missing hint forces a read
full scan reads everything
The unreadable-folder protection could not be inverted locally (Windows). I did not write a dedicated test for the streaming order or the memory bound.
Checks: cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy -D warnings, cargo test --all-features (all targets), on a separate target directory, because the dev server holds the main binary.

Before a file is opened, its size and modification time and the signature of its .lrc/.txt sidecars are compared with what the catalogue holds; an unchanged file on an available track with its relocation hint is skipped from a stat alone. The signature lives in a new track.sidecar_signature column, never NULL once written, so the first scan after the upgrade reads everything once. Results stream to the database in path order in batches of 25 instead of being collected whole. Discovery logs and counts a folder it cannot read and goes on, and the tracks under it are left as they are rather than marked missing. waveflow-server database rescan-full asks every library's next scan to read every file.

Walkthrough

Summary

The inspected changes preserve existing file-access privileges. However, a full rescan can complete and consume its request while a folder remains unreadable. After access returns, those files may still be skipped, weakening the recovery path.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: An unreadable subtree can consume a full-rescan request without receiving the requested read. Its tracks retain availability and old skip facts; once access returns, matching size, modification time and sidecar signatures can make ordinary scans skip them. Previously, the discovery error aborted the scan and left the request pending. This weakens recovery for same-size, same-time rewrites—the documented reason for the full-rescan override. Root failures and failures that abort before completion still preserve the request.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A writer to scanned library files can influence extracted content and metadata-based skip decisions within that library. The operator command has broader scope—all libraries in its configured database—but uses the existing initialization and instance-key binding path. No additional service or credential authority was identified in the inspected changes.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
inferred — The signature probe does not establish a new filesystem privilege boundary: the base already opened the same sibling lyric files. The head adds nonblocking opens while retaining no-follow and bounded-read controls. Size and modification time are cache-validity heuristics, not content-integrity attestation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The retained concern is recovery containment, not a demonstrated authorization vulnerability. Preserving availability during an unreadable-subtree event prevents destructive catalogue churn, but consuming the full-read override at that same terminal state can leave the requested refresh undelivered.

… the walk cannot say what it missed, and harden its test
The folder errors are written to the scan job at once, since a library whose only content is unreadable runs no batch to write them. A walk error that names no path inside the root sets the discovery incomplete, and that scan marks no track missing. The unreadable-folder tests restore permissions through a Drop guard and skip when the folder stays readable, as it does to root.

… a signature only after a successful read
A track under an unreadable folder is absent from what the walk discovered, so a byte-identical file elsewhere could claim it as moved; candidates under unreadable folders are now excluded, and none are offered when the walk could not name what it missed. The sidecar signature is recorded only when the read succeeded, so a failed extraction is retried, sidecars included.

Re the outside-diff comment on scanner.rs:363-366 (a signature recorded after a failed extraction): fixed in 3c3c5d6. The signature is pushed only when the read succeeded, so a failed extraction is retried on the next scan, sidecars included. No dedicated test: the case needs an extraction that fails transiently on a file whose size and modification time did not move, which a test cannot provoke.

A .lrc or .txt the scan can stat but not open let the read go ahead without its lyrics, and its signature was recorded all the same; fixing the permission later moves neither size nor time, so the file would have been skipped for good. The signature is now None in that case and nothing is recorded, so the file is read on every scan until the sidecar opens.

The signature followed a sidecar link and opened whatever it named, so a .lrc linked to a FIFO with no writer could hang the scan; and read_sidecar refused links but still blocked on a FIFO named directly. The signature now reads the sidecar's own metadata, counts anything but a regular file as absent (read_sidecar would not read it either), and both open through one helper that never follows a link and, on Unix, never blocks.
