docs: RFC-018 proposes an incremental scan that reads only what changed - #322
The Navidrome audit of 2026-10-24 found three problems in src/scanner.rs. I confirmed each in the code:
extract_file computes the full BLAKE3 hash and reads the tags of every file before the skip check compares size and modification time. An incremental scan therefore reads every byte of the library.
Every extraction result is collected in memory before anything is written.
discover_audio propagates the first error it meets, so one unreadable folder fails the whole scan.
This RFC proposes three fixes.
1. Check before reading. A file is skipped without being opened when its size, modification time and sidecar signature are all unchanged. The sidecar signature is a new nullable column, track.sidecar_signature, holding the size and modification time of the possible .lrc/.txt files. The full scan stays available for files rewritten in place with the same size and modification time.
2. Stream the results. Results are applied in path order as they arrive (buffered rather than collect), in batches of 25 that commit as they go.
3. Tolerate failed discovery. An unreadable folder is logged with its relative path and counted, and the scan goes on. The tracks under that folder are neither seen nor marked missing.
Open questions: folder-level skipping, file system watching, ignore rules, and following symbolic links.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
A file whose size, modification time and sidecar signature are unchanged is skipped before it is hashed or its tags read; results stream to the database in path order instead of being collected whole; one unreadable folder is logged and counted, and the tracks under it are left as they are rather than marked missing. Raised by the 2026-10-24 audit against Navidrome.

Walkthrough

Summary

Before / after behavior
