fix(frontend): redirect paths ending in backslashes instead of returning 500 - #3783
Vercel runtime errors for the regengine project show dozens of clusters like:
Failed to handle /pricing%5C%5C%5C Error: Cannot find module './.next/server/pages/pricing%5C%5C%5C.js'
Paths ending in one or more backslashes (/pricing%5C, /docs%5C%5C%5C, /tools/ftl-checker%5C, ...) reach the Next.js page lookup, which throws MODULE_NOT_FOUND and answers 500 instead of serving the page or a 404. Each cluster is small (2–8 hits), but together they're most of the project's error groups and add noise to the error list.
Change
frontend/src/proxy.ts: GET/HEAD requests whose path ends in backslashes (raw \ or %5C, any case) get a 308 to the same path without them, query string kept. Writes are not redirected. The redirect is built from request.nextUrl, so it never leaves the host.
Verification
vitest: new src/__tests__/proxy-trailing-backslash.test.ts (14 tests) plus the existing proxy CSP/CSRF/tenant-gate suites: 36/36 pass.
eslint on changed files and tsc --noEmit: clean.
Ran the frontend (next dev in node:24) and hit it with curl:
Request
Result
GET /pricing%5C%5C%5C
308 → /pricing, then 200
GET /tools/ftl-checker%5C?x=1
308 → /tools/ftl-checker?x=1
GET /docs%5c
308 → /docs
GET //evil.example%5C
stays on the same host
GET /pricing, /docs, /
200, no redirect
POST /contact%5C
404, not redirected
Backend golden path not exercised: the change only touches the frontend proxy.
Low Risk
Middleware-only URL normalization for read requests; scope is narrow and covered by tests, with no auth or data-path changes.
Overview Fixes noisy Vercel 500s when requests hit paths with trailing backslashes (\ or %5C), which previously broke Next.js page lookup with MODULE_NOT_FOUND.
The frontend proxy now detects trailing backslashes on GET/HEAD, strips them via exported stripTrailingBackslashes, and responds with a 308 to the normalized path on the same host (query string preserved, CSP applied). POST and other writes are not redirected so mutations are not replayed to a different URL. Paths with backslashes only in the middle are unchanged.
New Vitest coverage in proxy-trailing-backslash.test.ts exercises the helper, redirect behavior, host safety for //-prefixed paths, and that normal routes are untouched.

…ing 500
Requests like /pricing%5C or /docs%5C%5C%5C reached the Next.js page
lookup, which threw MODULE_NOT_FOUND and answered 500. Vercel runtime
errors showed dozens of these clusters across marketing and tool pages.
The proxy now 308-redirects GET/HEAD requests whose path ends in one or
more backslashes (raw or percent-encoded) to the same path without them,
keeping the query string. Writes are not redirected.

Walkthrough
The proxy now strips trailing literal or encoded backslashes from paths. For GET and HEAD requests with trailing backslashes, it returns a 308 redirect to the cleaned path. The redirect preserves the query string. Other methods and paths without trailing backslashes do not receive this redirect. Tests cover the helper and proxy behavior.
Requests for traceability lot codes ending in a backslash would be redirected to a different lot code. Unauthenticated requests with long %5C runs can also cost extra CPU in the proxy. Exclude API paths from the redirect and replace the regex with a linear scan before merging.
Security architecture risk: High · up to 8a8a3
Unauthenticated requests can trigger excessive CPU work in frontend request handling. The same cleanup can also change API resource identifiers. Same-host redirects and unchanged write and tenant protections limit the exposure, but do not address these risks.
Retained concerns
High · security · observed: The new unanchored repeated-suffix regex processes attacker-controlled GET/HEAD paths before authentication. Long sequences of encoded backslashes followed by a nonmatching character cause superlinear evaluation even though no redirect results. Repeated unauthenticated requests can consume serving-runtime CPU and impair frontend availability.
Medium · architecture · inferred: Where the FDA API rewrite is enabled, the global cleanup changes requests such as /api/v1/fda/trace/LOT%5C into requests for LOT. The inspected ingestion model does not prohibit trailing backslashes, and the trace handler consumes the TLC as its resource identity. An authorized client following the redirect can therefore receive a trace rooted at a different lot. Backend tenant and permission enforcement remain intact; this is a resource-identity contract concern, not an established authorization bypass.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — No credentials or tenant membership are required to reach the expensive regex through matched public GET/HEAD requests. The independently attackable resource is frontend request-processing CPU, rather than a particular tenant record. The evidence does not establish how many workers, tenants, or deployments share that capacity.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The retained verification reports superlinear regex execution for long encoded-backslash runs followed by a nonmatching character. The first test operation is sufficient to incur the cost; a successful redirect is not required. The exact base comparison confirms this processing path is newly introduced.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The strongest inspected controls remain effective: destination construction preserves origin, writes bypass the new redirect, and the FDA trace handler still requires fda.read, an active subscription, and tenant resolution before database access. These controls do not establish equivalence between a suffix-bearing lot identifier and its stripped form.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Use linear-time suffix processing so unauthenticated request cost remains predictable, and restrict page cleanup so opaque API identifiers retain their original identity rather than inheriting page canonicalization rules.

Replace the trailing-backslash regex with a linear backward scan.
The pattern /(?:%5C|\\)+$/i has no start anchor. When a path contains a long run of %5C sequences followed by a non-matching character, the engine retries from each starting position and rescans the rest of the run. Matching cost therefore grows quadratically with path length. stripTrailingBackslashes runs for every GET and HEAD request before the CSRF and authentication checks, so an unauthenticated client can repeat such requests. Each scan blocks the thread that runs it. A local benchmark of this pattern took about 30 ms for 4,096 %5C sequences. Time grew about 55 times when the input grew 8 times. Vercel's 14 KB URL limit still permits thousands of sequences.
Replace the regex with a scan from the end of the pathname. Remove TRAILING_BACKSLASHES once no other code references it:
Replace the regex with a backward scan

Skip the trailing-backslash redirect for /api/ paths.
The redirect runs for every GET and HEAD path that reaches the proxy, including /api/ paths. GET /api/v1/fda/trace/LOT%5C redirects to /api/v1/fda/trace/LOT. The trace endpoint uses the final path segment as the TLC, so the redirected request can return a different lot. TLCs must be preserved exactly as received.
