fix(frontend): redirect paths ending in backslashes instead of returning 500 - #3779
Vercel runtime errors for the regengine project show dozens of clusters like:
Failed to handle /pricing%5C%5C%5C Error: Cannot find module './.next/server/pages/pricing%5C%5C%5C.js'
Paths ending in one or more backslashes (/pricing%5C, /docs%5C%5C%5C, /tools/ftl-checker%5C, ...) reach the Next.js page lookup, which throws MODULE_NOT_FOUND and answers 500 instead of serving the page or a 404. Each cluster is small (2–8 hits), but together they're most of the project's error groups and add noise to the error list.
Change
frontend/src/proxy.ts: GET/HEAD requests whose path ends in backslashes (raw \ or %5C, any case) get a 308 to the same path without them, query string kept. Writes are not redirected. The redirect is built from request.nextUrl, so it never leaves the host.
Verification
vitest: new src/__tests__/proxy-trailing-backslash.test.ts (14 tests) plus the existing proxy CSP/CSRF/tenant-gate suites: 36/36 pass.
eslint on changed files and tsc --noEmit: clean.
Ran the frontend (next dev in node:24) and hit it with curl:
Request
Result
GET /pricing%5C%5C%5C
308 → /pricing, then 200
GET /tools/ftl-checker%5C?x=1
308 → /tools/ftl-checker?x=1
GET /docs%5c
308 → /docs
GET //evil.example%5C
stays on the same host
GET /pricing, /docs, /
200, no redirect
POST /contact%5C
404, not redirected
Backend golden path not exercised: the change only touches the frontend proxy.
Low Risk
Small, read-only redirect in edge middleware with host-safe URL cloning; POST/PUT/etc. are explicitly excluded from redirection.
Overview
Fixes noisy Vercel 500s when crawlers or bad links hit paths like /pricing%5C%5C%5C: Next.js tried to load a page module for that literal path and threw MODULE_NOT_FOUND.
The frontend proxy middleware now detects trailing raw or %5C backslashes, strips them via exported stripTrailingBackslashes, and returns a 308 to the cleaned path (query string preserved, CSP still applied). Only GET and HEAD are redirected so mutating requests are not replayed elsewhere; redirects are built from request.nextUrl so the host cannot change.
New proxy-trailing-backslash.test.ts covers normalization edge cases, query preservation, write bypass, and a path that could look like an open redirect.

…ing 500
Requests like /pricing%5C or /docs%5C%5C%5C reached the Next.js page
lookup, which threw MODULE_NOT_FOUND and answered 500. Vercel runtime
errors showed dozens of these clusters across marketing and tool pages.
The proxy now 308-redirects GET/HEAD requests whose path ends in one or
more backslashes (raw or percent-encoded) to the same path without them,
keeping the query string. Writes are not redirected.

Walkthrough
The proxy adds stripTrailingBackslashes to remove trailing raw or percent-encoded backslashes from a path. For GET and HEAD requests with a matching path, the proxy issues a 308 redirect to the cleaned path and preserves the query string. Tests cover helper results, redirect behavior, host preservation, and a content-security-policy header on the GET response.
The new redirect also applies to API routes. A trace request for a lot code ending in a backslash would be silently redirected to a different lot's trace. Exclude /api paths from the redirect before merging. The regex can also be rewritten as a linear scan to avoid avoidable CPU cost on long crafted paths.
Security architecture risk: High · up to 8a8a3
Anonymous requests can trigger disproportionate synchronous processing before login checks, potentially reducing capacity for other frontend requests. Same-host redirects and protection against redirecting writes are useful safeguards, but they do not address this availability risk.
Retained concerns
High · security · inferred: The new canonicalization places potentially quadratic synchronous pathname processing before authentication at a broadly matched public entrypoint. An unauthenticated caller can submit long runs of encoded backslashes followed by a nonmatching character, consuming frontend execution capacity without needing a valid session or tenant identity. Impact on other requests depends on shared worker capacity and deployment limits.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The availability exposure is not tenant-scoped: anonymous GET/HEAD traffic reaches the regex across proxy-matched page and API paths, except surfaces rejected earlier. Other requests sharing frontend execution capacity may be affected. Backend compromise, credential access, and service-wide outage across isolated workers are not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The retained finding traces an externally controlled pathname into the newly added regex. A long repeated encoded-backslash sequence with a nonmatching final character exercises expensive failure rather than taking the redirect. Authentication occurs too late to gate this work. The finding is introduced by the full-PR change; production request-size limits and achievable exhaustion rates remain unverified.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The redirect does not itself return protected resource data or grant authority. The FDA trace destination still requires fda.read permission, an active subscription, and tenant resolution against the principal. These controls counter an authorization-bypass interpretation, but do not protect the earlier synchronous pathname processing.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The regex executes synchronously, so downstream authentication or asynchronous request handling cannot interrupt its current evaluation. The inspected deployment configuration does not establish an effective URL-length bound or worker-isolation guarantee that would contain the retained condition.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Use a bounded linear-time suffix scan instead of repeated regex search, and establish an effective ingress pathname limit. Separately, constrain page cleanup to page routes or explicitly define API identifier canonicalization before applying it to opaque resource paths.

Scan trailing backslashes without regex backtracking.
stripTrailingBackslashes() runs before CSRF and authentication. A long %5C sequence followed by a nonmatching character makes this regex retry from multiple positions, causing superlinear synchronous work that can block the proxy.

Exclude /api/ paths from the trailing-backslash redirect.
The redirect runs for /api/* requests. For GET /api/v1/fda/trace/LOT%5C, it returns a 308 to /api/v1/fda/trace/LOT. The client then receives the trace for lot LOT, not for LOT\. The FDA trace route passes the final segment to fetch_trace_graph_data as tlc without normalization. The response does not show that a redirect occurred. TLCs must be preserved exactly as received, so this redirect can return data for a different lot.
The page-level 500 that this PR fixes comes from page lookup. The redirect is not needed for API paths.
