tests/test_first_boot.pynever runs under the repo's runner — 0 tests.tests/run_suite.py:44-46drivespython -m unittest discover, butTestTailscaleHook/TestFlatpaksHook/TestEnablementPolicy(tests/test_first_boot.py:157,201,226) are plain classes with bareasserts, notunittest.TestCasesubclasses. Verified at dea8f26:python3 -m unittest discover -s tests -t tests -p test_first_boot.py→Ran 0 tests … NO TESTS RAN(pytest collects 9, but pytest isn't intests/requirements.txtor the Justfile). So the PR body's "a regression fails the build" is not true; every other hook test in the tree usesunittest.TestCase(tests/test_bootupctl_adopt_hook.py:30,tests/test_setup_hook_version_contract.py:21). Fix: subclassunittest.TestCaseand useself.assert*. - (medium) Tailscale hook still stamps before the body, so a failed
tailscale setis never retried.10-tailscale.sh:27calls legacyversion-script(commits first) and:29then runstailscale setunderset -e. If tailscaled isn't up yet on first boot, the hook fails and stays stamped — the "never retried" failure the PR body says it fixes, just one step later. The repo contract (docs/skills/setup-hooks.md:33-43) and compat shim (20-home-labels.sh:22-26) exist for exactly this;#259tracks the migration, but since this PR rewrites the gate it's the place to adopt check/commit.
intent-alignment

Closes #19but two of five acceptance criteria are untouched. Issue #19 requires "Flathub and the declared default Flatpaks are installed or have a visible retryable failure state" and "a repeat boot proves first-boot operations are idempotent." The diff adds no Flathub/preinstall handling, and idempotency is a stubbed unit test (tests/test_first_boot.py:189-199), which the body itself notes is not a boot. Either address them or change the keyword toRefs #19so the issue stays open.

docs/skills/setup-hooks.mdnot updated. It is the hooks doc::72-77still lists10-tailscale.sh/99-flatpaks.shas legacyversion-scriptcallers (true, but the defer behaviour changed),:79-92inventory doesn't mention the deferred/skip semantics, and:101-110"Tests" lists hook tests but not the new module. The new section landed indocs/skills/desktop-contract.md:242-265instead.

HUMAN DECISION NEEDED — @kylerankin does this PR fully Closes #19, or only the Tailscale/firefox-config/stats-timer slice? Issue #19 also asks for Flathub/default-Flatpak retryable failure state and a repeat-boot idempotency proof, neither of which is in the diff (the body says e2e is not runnable here).
Reviewed at 79f0ce5.
correctness
tests/test_first_boot.py:218asserts"cp -rf /tmp/firefox-config-" in proc.stderr, hardcoding/tmp.tempfile.mkdtemphonoursTMPDIR; withTMPDIRset the test fails (reproduced:AssertionError: 'cp -rf /tmp/firefox-config-' not found in "... /usr/bin/cp -rf /tmp/utah485-v9Ol/tmpx/firefox-config-fc0cpy_4/bluefin.js ..."). Assert onstr(firefox_root)instead.10-tailscale.sh:26-28still uses the legacyversion-script tailscale privileged 1 || exit 0immediately beforetailscale set. That helper stamps completion before the body, so iftailscale setfails (e.g.tailscaled.servicenot yet up when99-privileged.shpkexecs the hook) the hook fails underset -eand is never retried — contradicting the hook comment at lines 7-12 and the PR body ("retry on the next boot"). The guards only protect the pre-stamp paths. Repo convention for this is theversion-script-check/version-script-commitpair with a compat shim (docs/skills/setup-hooks.md:39-70,05-bootupctl-adopt.sh); #259 tracks it, but this PR's stated retry guarantee depends on it.
docs-currency
- The hook behaviour is documented in
docs/skills/desktop-contract.md:284-305(also missing a blank line before the##heading at 284), but the hooks doc isdocs/skills/setup-hooks.md: its per-hook table (:95,:98) and the legacy-gate list (:76-77) still describe10-tailscale.sh/99-flatpaks.shwithout the new defer/skip semantics.
intent-alignment
- PR body says
input-remapper.service"now" gets an enablement policy; it was already in the preset,configure-services.sh, andcontracts/bluefin-desktop.toml:159before this PR — the diff only addsbluefin-stats-refresh.timer.
style
tests/test_first_boot.py:91,214-216: acpstub is installed, but the hook calls/usr/bin/cpby absolute path so the stub is never used; the realcpfails against/var/lib/flatpakand the test comment is inconsistent with that. Temp dirs frommkdtempare never cleaned up (addCleanup(shutil.rmtree, ...)).10-tailscale.sh:6drops-xfrom the formerset -xeuo pipefail, losing the journal trace the other privileged hooks keep.

Pushed to Medium — One for you to decide: does #485 need to also carry the Flathub/default-Flatpak retryable-failure state and the repeat-boot idempotency proof that #19 asks for, or is that out of scope for this PR? I left it as the hook-validation slice it currently is. 🐝 Hive Agent: |

Read the two hooks against the tree and ran the suite (644 tests pass, including the 9 new ones). The change looks correct to me; the one thing a maintainer needs to settle is ordering against #259.
Verified
user-setup.hooks.d/99-privileged.sh:7launchespkexec /usr/bin/ublue-privileged-setup, soPKEXEC_UIDis a real context for10-tailscale.sh:22; the new guard defers rather than permanently breaking the grant.- Both guards sit before
version-script tailscale privileged 1(10-tailscale.sh:27), so a deferred run leaves no stamp and the body is retried on the next boot — the retry claim in the body holds. bluefin-stats-refresh.timerexists in the image (baselines/utah/surface.tsv:16), andconfigure-services.sh:28-30enable_unitis guarded byunit_exists, so the new enable line cannot fail a build where the unit is absent.99-flatpaks.shhasset -x, notset -e, so the pre-change cp failure only set the hook's exit status; thecompgen -Gguard is still a correct tidy-up.
Overlap with #259 (same author) — this is the question for a human
#259 rewrites the same two hooks to the version-script-check / version-script-commit split (its diff touches 10-tailscale.sh line version-script tailscale privileged 1 and 99-flatpaks.sh line version-script flatpaks privileged 1), and adds tests/test_migrated_setup_hook_contract.py asserting the exact line set of each hook. Whichever lands second will conflict on both files and, if #259 lands second, its contract test will not know about the guard lines added here. The guards in this PR are independently valuable, but with the old version-script they still stamp before tailscale set runs, so a failing tailscale set (e.g. tailscaled not yet up) is marked done forever — exactly what #259 fixes. Suggest landing #259 first and rebasing this on top, or folding these guards into #259.
Minor, not blocking: set -xeuo pipefail became set -euo pipefail, dropping the trace that used to show up in the first-boot journal.

Cap: 3 backlog issue(s) per PR. |
…flatpaks.sh The reviewer's high-severity correctness finding at 2026-10-02T21:00Z flagged that this test forbids exactly the `compgen` guard open PR projectbluefin#485 adds to `99-flatpaks.sh`; the two PRs cannot both merge. The shape projectbluefin#488 pins is: firefox-config reaches Utah through common's `/system_files/bluefin` profile, the hook's `cp` line targets that path, and the Containerfile's COPY of the profile is intact. The `compgen` guard in projectbluefin#485 is a runtime guard for first-boot minimal images, not a change to the shipping contract: the `cp` line still exists, still targets firefox-config, and still sits inside the `$ARCH != aarch64` branch. Rewrote the structural parser (`_arch_branch_lines`) to walk the entire `$ARCH != aarch64` block (including one nested sub-branch) and renamed the assertion to `test_hook_copy_branch_is_reachable_on_x86_64`. The cp-line assertion still pins: the line targets `/usr/share/ublue-os/firefox-config/`, lives inside the outer branch (directly or under one nested guard), and the hook body still references the same source path. A future refactor that wraps the copy in two levels of indirection, or removes it entirely, still trips the test. Verified with a synthesized copy of projectbluefin#485's proposed hook body (the `if compgen -G ... then cp ... else echo ... fi` shape): parser returns the cp line, the assertion fires on it. `pytest tests/test_firefox_config_shipping.py tests/test_ujust_overrides.py` -> 17 passed.

HUMAN DECISION NEEDED — @kylerankin should this PR keep Closes #19, or be re-scoped to Refs #19? Issue #19's acceptance criteria include a Flathub/default-Flatpak retryable failure state and a repeat-boot idempotency proof; neither is in this diff.
Reviewed at 4143168. Ran python3 -m unittest tests.test_first_boot locally: 12 tests pass.
intent-alignment
- The PR body says "Closes #19", but the diff touches only
10-tailscale.sh,99-flatpaks.sh(Firefox prefs), and thebluefin-stats-refresh.timerenablement. Issue #19 criteria 2 ("Flathub and the declared default Flatpaks are installed or have a visible retryable failure state") and 5 ("A repeat boot proves first-boot operations are idempotent") are not addressed — the body itself notes e2e boots were not run, anddocs/skills/desktop-contract.md:299-301says the new tests are "not evidence of a real repeat boot or of offline/network Flatpak deployment". Either land this as a partial (Refs #19) or leave the issue open with the remaining criteria listed.

docs/skills/setup-hooks.md:73-77now states "Utah's migrated privileged and user hooks carry this shim alongside their check/commit calls. Restore an accurate list: migrated =05-bootupctl-adopt.sh,10-tailscale.sh,20-home-labels.sh,99-flatpaks.sh,30-ghostty.sh; legacy = the two Framework hooks.

_arch_branch_lines tracked nesting but never used it, so the "cp sits at depth <= 1" claim in the docstring was unenforced: burying the copy under two guards still passed. Bound inclusion by nesting depth, drop the _arch_branch_copy_lines pass-through alias, and match if/fi as whole words so commands like find, file and ifconfig no longer shift the count. Add parser tests covering the direct line, one nested guard (the shape PR projectbluefin#485 introduces), two nested guards, a line past the closing fi, and the fi/if prefix collisions, so the structural assertion is pinned rather than asserted. Criterion 2 (Flathub/default Flatpaks installed or visible retryable failure state) is untouched, and criteria 1 and 5 (clean first boot, repeat-boot idempotency on a booted system) are explicitly deferred in the body and in

Approving at 522c8f2. Enabling bluefin-stats-refresh.timer in the preset, configure-services.sh and the contract together is consistent, and the timer is already in the image (baselines/utah/surface.tsv). Moving the ujust section to references/ujust.md (text unchanged apart from the heading level) brings package-contract.md from 510 to 463 lines, which also fixes the contract job that is red on main and on #611 and #562 ("package-contract.md is 510 lines (hard max 500)", run 37528638545). The countme timer that dcb6164 added was dropped again in 3bc678d, so this enables only bluefin-stats-refresh.timer: in contracts/bluefin-desktop.toml, the 85-utah-desktop.preset preset, configure-services.sh and the [services] list in desktop-contract.md, with a parity test across all three. test_desktop_contract and test_migrated_setup_hook_contract pass (64 tests) and CI is green. Drop projectbluefin-countme.timer from the contract, preset, build script and docs: Common already ships its preset and wants symlink, so the Utah additions were redundant and outside this PR's stated scope. - The PR body says the timer is enabled in
system_files/shared/usr/lib/systemd/system-preset/85-utah-desktop.preset,scripts/configure-services.sh, andcontracts/bluefin-desktop.toml, but head b34483f touches onlytests/test_desktop_contract.pyandtests/test_migrated_setup_hook_contract.py(gh pr diff; the branch is one commit ahead ofmain). None of the three files containsbluefin-stats-refreshat this SHA, so the title's behavior change ("preserve enabled statistics timers after first boot") is not delivered — the implementation appears to have been lost in the latest rewrite commit.
correctness
tests/test_desktop_contract.py:361-367asserts"bluefin-stats-refresh.timer"in the contract, enable bluefin-stats-refresh.timerin the preset andenable_unit bluefin-stats-refresh.timerin the script; none exist at head, so the test fails (CIcontractjob:FAIL: test_stats_refresh_timer_enabled_in_contract_preset_and_script,FAILED (failures=1)). Restore the preset/script/contract edits or drop the test.

- (low)
tests/test_migrated_setup_hook_contract.py:245-276adds three Tailscale/Flatpak hook tests that have no relation to the stats timer this PR's title/preset/contract changes are about (they exercise10-tailscale.sh:22-37and99-flatpaks.sh:24-30, both already onmainvia #259). They pass and are harmless, but they ride along under afix(services): ... statistics timerstitle; consider splitting or retitling so the history matches the diff.

Approving at 46c5be2. This renews my approval at 3bc678d, which the base change dismissed. The timer enablement is the same as at 3bc678d: the contract, the preset, configure-services.sh and the desktop-contract list, with a parity test across the three. The three new hook tests in test_migrated_setup_hook_contract.py ride along, as Hive noted. They exercise hooks that are already on main, and they pass. I ran python3 -m unittest tests.test_desktop_contract tests.test_migrated_setup_hook_contract at this head: 64 tests OK, including the four new ones. I haven't checked an installed image.

Reviewed statistics timer enablement across configure-services, system preset, desktop contract and skill. Ran the desktop-contract and migrated-hook suites at 46c5be2: 64 tests passed. The added hook refusal/recovery tests exercise code already on main. Current CI passed.
Reviewed with Codex.

Enable
bluefin-stats-refresh.timeron Utah the way Bluefin does. The Tailscale defer/PKEXEC_UIDguard and the99-flatpaks.shskip-when-absent already landed onmainvia #259 (f7c24b2) and are no longer part of this PR.What changed
system_files/shared/usr/lib/systemd/system-preset/85-utah-desktop.preset:enable bluefin-stats-refresh.timer, so bootc's first-boot preset application keeps it on.scripts/configure-services.sh:enable_unit bluefin-stats-refresh.timerat build time.contracts/bluefin-desktop.toml: the timer is now inservices.enabled.tests/test_desktop_contract.py: timer enablement across contract/preset/build script (next to the other preset parity tests).tests/test_migrated_setup_hook_contract.py: the hook cases the existing harness did not cover (Tailscale missing binary defers then recovers, root/invalid/missingPKEXEC_UIDnever grants, Flatpaks with no firefox-config stamps cleanly). No separatetests/test_first_boot.pyharness.Where Bluefin enables the timer
The unit ships from
projectbluefin/bluefininsystem_files/shared/usr/lib/systemd/system/(bluefin-stats-refresh.service/bluefin-stats-refresh.timer), and Bluefin enables the timer at build time inbuild_files/base/17-cleanup.sh:29(systemctl enable bluefin-stats-refresh.timer).Not changed here
projectbluefin-countme.timeris not touched: Common already ships03-projectbluefin-countme.presetand thetimers.target.wantssymlink, so any Utah-side countme change belongs in a separate PR.Not delivered here
