fix(contract): require the shipped Firefox preference file on the desktop image - #490

correctness
tests/test_firefox_config_shipping.py:63-67—test_hook_copy_branch_runs_unconditionally_on_x86_64asserts"/usr/bin/cp -rf /usr/share/ublue-os/firefox-config/" in body or "/usr/share/ublue-os/firefox-config/" in body. The second operand is a superset of the first and is byte-identical totest_hook_targets_firefox_config(line 51), so this test can never fail when that one passes. Its name and docstring promise to catch "a future guard that turns the copy into a no-op", but acompgen/[ -d ]guard wrapped around hook line 15 would leave the path string present and the test green. Either assert thecpline is not nested under a guard (e.g. parse theifblock, or assert the line sits directly inside theARCH != aarch64branch) or drop the test — as written it is a duplicate with a misleading contract.
intent-alignment
- PR body: "it asserts on the COPY line that would fail the build if common ever stopped publishing firefox-config". It would not —
Containerfile:97COPY --from=common /system_files/bluefin /tmp/utah-bluefinsucceeds whether or not thefirefox-config/subdirectory exists in that tree, andCOMMON_IMAGE_SHA(Containerfile:11) is pinned anyway. The test pins Utah's two wiring lines only; it says nothing about common's content. The premise of #488 is nonetheless refuted correctly (verifiedprojectbluefin/commonsystem_files/bluefin/usr/share/ublue-os/firefox-config/01-bluefin-global.jsexists), so the resolution stands — just trim the overclaim from the body/docstring (tests/test_firefox_config_shipping.py:16-17"breaks the build").

HUMAN DECISION NEEDED — @dtg01100 this test forbids exactly the compgen guard that open PR #485 adds to 99-flatpaks.sh; a maintainer must pick one (pin the unguarded cp, or allow the guard and rewrite the test) — the two PRs cannot both merge.
intent-alignment
- Issue #488 was filed from PR #485 (still open). #485's diff wraps the
cpinif compgen -G "/usr/share/ublue-os/firefox-config/*";tests/test_firefox_config_shipping.py:94-115(test_hook_copy_branch_runs_unconditionally_on_x86_64) is written to fail on precisely that shape. Neither the PR body nor the issue comment mentions #485, so whichever merges second turnsjust testred. The issue asked "decide whether to ship the config or remove the hook"; declaring the guard itself a regression is a design choice beyond that ask and needs a human call.
correctness
- The structural parser at
tests/test_firefox_config_shipping.py:63/:66usesstartswith("if")/startswith("fi")on stripped lines, so it is both too strict and too loose (verified by running_arch_branch_copy_lineson mutated bodies):- A one-line
if …; then …; fianywhere in the ARCH branch incrementsnested_depthwith no matching close → every later line is dropped and the test fails on a correct hook. A line beginningfirefox_dir=…is read asfiand closes the outer branch early → same spurious failure. [ -d /usr/share/ublue-os/firefox-config ] && /usr/bin/cp …on one line, orcompgen -G … || exit 0placed above theif "$ARCH"block, silences the copy and the test still passes. The PR body's claim that "a future[ -d ]/compgenguard that silences the copy fails the test" holds only for theif-statement form. Either tighten the parser (match^if\b/^fi\b, handle inline; fi) or drop the structural claim and keep only the twoassertIns.

correctness
tests/test_firefox_config_shipping.py:50-78—_arch_branch_linesappends every line inside the$ARCHblock at any nesting depth (nested_depthis tracked but never bounds inclusion), so the "structural" guarantee the PR body and the docstring at:103-112describe ("depth <= 1", "a future[ -d ]/compgenguard that silences the copy fails the test") is not implemented. Verified at head 1e27f5c: wrapping thecpinif [ -d /usr/share/ublue-os/firefox-config ]; then … fi→ 3 tests OK; wrapping it two levels deep → 3 tests OK; only movingcpoutside the block fails. In practicetest_hook_copy_branch_is_reachable_on_x86_64reduces to theassertInintest_hook_targets_firefox_config(:92). The body's mutation claim also names a test (test_hook_copy_branch_runs_unconditionally_on_x86_64) that does not exist in the file. Either implement the depth bound, or rewrite the body/docstring to state what is actually pinned ("the cp line exists inside the$ARCH != aarch64block"). Note the body ("directly") and docstring ("or inside one nested guard") also disagree with each other; open PR #485 adds exactly such a guard, so pick the contract deliberately.
style
tests/test_firefox_config_shipping.py:81-86—_arch_branch_copy_linesis a pass-through alias of_arch_branch_lineswith a misleading docstring (:cpp:role, "PR #488" is an issue, claims to return "the cp line" but returns all branch lines). Drop it and call_arch_branch_linesdirectly.:62,66—startswith("if")/startswith("fi")also matchifconfig, find, file …; anchor onif/fias whole words if the parser stays.
Context for maintainers: I verified the PR's central premise independently — projectbluefin/common system_files/bluefin/usr/share/ublue-os/ does contain firefox-config/, and Containerfile:97,143 copy that tree in, so issue #488's "permanent no-op" claim is indeed wrong in fact and the hook at 99-flatpaks.sh:15 is live on x86_64.

tests/test_firefox_config_shipping.py:52-70—_arch_branch_linesonly tracksif/fi. Two gaps in the guarantee the docstring claims ("moved out of the branch" fails): (a) anelse/elifat nesting 0 is not treated as leaving the branch, so acprelocated into the aarch64-onlyelsearm still passes; (b) a one-lineif …; then …; fiincrementsnestingwithout the matchingfibeing seen, after which the outerfidecrements instead of breaking and lines after the branch are collected. Both are cheap to close (break on^else\b/^elif\bat depth 0; skip lines whose own text contains; fi). Non-blocking.
intent-alignment
- (info, out-of-scope) The root cause named in both #488 and this PR is that
scripts/image-baseline.py:45-50EXTRACT never globs/usr/share/ublue-os/, sobaselines/utah/surface.tsvcannot show whether firefox-config shipped. A source-level pin works around that blindness; adding/usr/share/ublue-os/firefox-config/*to EXTRACT would make the baseline itself answer the question. Backlog candidate, not required here. - Limit of this review: I confirmed
firefox-config/exists inprojectbluefin/commonsystem_files/bluefin/usr/share/ublue-os/on main, not inside the pinnedCOMMON_IMAGE_SHAatContainerfile:11; the PR body already states the test cannot police common's content.
style
- (info)
tests/test_firefox_config_shipping.py:50,91-93docstrings describe thecompgenguard as something "PR #485 wraps" — #485 is unmerged and may change shape; phrase the tolerated single-guard form without tying it to a PR number.

Removed the source-text COPY/indentation parser: it could pass without proving that Firefox preferences ship. The composed-image desktop contract now requires the actual inherited preference file, so a missing Common payload fails image verification even if the directory exists. Preserved the documentation of first-boot behavioral coverage and the contributor's changes; no source-shape test was restored. |

The diff is a one-line contract requirement plus docs. The file it requires does exist in the pinned common image (checked by listing the layer), and CI's image build passes with it. Please update the title and description: they still describe a shipping test this branch no longer contains. It also overlaps #485 and #493 in docs/skills/setup-hooks.md, so whichever lands second needs a rebase.

intent-alignment
- (medium) PR body/title describe a change that is not in the diff. The body's "What changed" says
tests/test_firefox_config_shipping.pyasserts the hook'scpnesting and the Containerfile COPY line, and "Validation" reports 8 tests passing; at headf057bfbthe PR touches onlycontracts/bluefin-desktop.toml:94(adds/usr/share/ublue-os/firefox-config/01-bluefin-global.jsto[flatpak].files) anddocs/skills/setup-hooks.md. No such test file exists undertests/. The maintainer rewrite (see castrojo's comment) replaced the source-shape test with the image-level contract entry, which is the stronger fix for #488 — but the body and thefix(tests)title still sell the old approach, and a squash merge would carry that stale description. Please rewrite the body (and title, e.g.fix(contract): require shipped firefox-config payload) to match the diff.
docs-currency

docs/skills/setup-hooks.md:129-133says "Source-text COPY/nesting checks cannot prove that content ships; the first-boot behavioral suite executes the real hook…" — the first clause argues against a test that is not in the tree, and the second never names the suite (tests/test_migrated_setup_hook_contract.py:19,77-88is the one that runs99-flatpaks.shagainst a scratch firefox source). Name the file and drop the reference to the absent source-text check. - (low)
docs/skills/desktop-contract.md:65-68still describes[flatpak]as "the Flathub remote, the Bazaar preinstall, the99-flatpaks.shhook, and the Brewfile"; it should now also list the Firefox preference file the contract requires atcontracts/bluefin-desktop.toml:94.

Thanks. The one-line contract addition is right, and build_main was green with it at 21d292d. Please:
- Rebase onto
main.docs/skills/setup-hooks.mdconflicts in two hunks with the setup-hook doc changes that landed since (#259/#493). - Your 03:15Z comment mentions
tests/test_firefox_config_shipping.py, but that file is not in the diff. Either add it or correct the comment and body so they describe the three files actually changed.
After a clean rebase with green CI this is ready to merge.

…ktop image Resolves projectbluefin#488 on a clean rebase off upstream/main. The previous branch had accumulated unrelated changes from earlier PR work and predated the maintainer's behavioural rewrite; this commit re-cuts the change to the three files that actually matter. 1. `contracts/bluefin-desktop.toml` adds `/usr/share/ublue-os/firefox-config/01-bluefin-global.js` to `[flatpak].files`. The file Common ships through `system_files/bluefin/usr/share/ublue-os/firefox-config/01-bluefin-global.js` and Utah pulls in via `Containerfile:97,143`. The contract entry is the stronger image-level check: a missing Common payload fails image verification, regardless of whether the COPY line is present. 2. `docs/skills/setup-hooks.md` describes the contract in the `99-flatpaks.sh` row so the next reader sees both halves of the contract: the hook body runs the copy, the contract verifies the payload actually shipped. `last_updated` bumped. 3. PR body / branch commentary references `tests/test_firefox_config_shipping.py`, which is not in this diff (the maintainer's rewrite replaced the source-shape test with the image-level contract entry). The body and the 03:15Z follow-up on projectbluefin#490 now describe the three files actually changed, not the old test. `python3 scripts/verify-desktop-contract.py --check contracts/bluefin-desktop.toml` is green.

docs/skills/setup-hooks.md:102now says both "copy optional defaults" and "the image desktop contract requires the actual payload". With this PR the payload is image-mandatory (contracts/bluefin-desktop.toml:104, enforced at build byContainerfile:257→scripts/verify-desktop-contract.py:139-142); only the hook's owncompgenguard (99-flatpaks.sh:25-30) still treats it as optional. Suggest rewording the row ("copy Common's Firefox defaults; the hook tolerates absence, the contract does not") so the two halves don't read as contradictory.
intent-alignment
- info — #488 was already closed via #507 (baseline EXTRACT now enumerates
firefox-config), and the body usesRefs #488, not a closing keyword. The contract entry is still a strictly stronger, build-time check than the baseline listing, so the change stands on its own; just noting the issue it cites is not open. Verified: common'ssystem_files/bluefin/usr/share/ublue-os/firefox-config/01-bluefin-global.jsexists,Containerfile:97,143copies it in, and the PR'sbuild_main / image (main, utah, testing, x86_64)job passed with the verifier running.

Clean v2: one contract entry plus the setup-hooks row and the regenerated skill index. CI is green, and the file is present in the current testing image.
Re-cut #490 on a fresh rebase off
upstream/main(43a9f70).Problem. Issue #488 asked whether the
99-flatpaks.shcpline that targets/usr/share/ublue-os/firefox-config/is a permanent no-op on Utah, or whether Common's payload actually reaches the image. The earlier branch had accumulated unrelated changes from pre-maintainer PR work and predated the maintainer rewrite that replaced the source-shape test with the image-level contract entry. What changed. Three files in this commit:
contracts/bluefin-desktop.tomladds/usr/share/ublue-os/firefox-config/01-bluefin-global.jsto[flatpak].files. Common ships the file undersystem_files/bluefin/usr/share/ublue-os/firefox-config/; the Containerfile COPY atContainerfile:97,143pulls it into Utah. The contract entry is the stronger image-level check: a missing Common payload fails image verification, regardless of the COPY line. Pinned at[flatpak].filesline 104.docs/skills/setup-hooks.md99-flatpaks.shrow describes the contract so the next reader sees both halves (the hook body runs the copy; the contract verifies the payload actually shipped).last_updatedbumped.PR title / branch commentary references
tests/test_firefox_config_shipping.py, which is not in this diff. Per the maintainer's rewrite, the source-shape test was replaced with the image-level contract entry, which is the stronger fix for Review backlog (intent-alignment): firefox-config is never shipped on Utah, so 99-flatpaks.sh body is now permanently a no-op #488. The body and the 03:15Z follow-up now describe the three files actually changed.python3 scripts/verify-desktop-contract.py --check contracts/bluefin-desktop.tomlis green.Refs #488
