TML-3476: migration plan and db update refuse to lose data until each drop is answered with --delete or --rename - #30648

…s widening SET NOT NULL's precheck fails when a NULL remains, so it never loses a value. A type change in the known safe widenings (int2 to int4 to int8, float4 to float8) keeps every value. Every other type change stays destructive. Signed-off-by: willbot <w.a.madden+machine@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Will Madden <madden@prisma.io>
…ne as widening The rebuild copies rows with INSERT ... SELECT, which fails on a NULL in a column that becomes NOT NULL rather than dropping the row. A rebuild that changes a column type stays destructive. Signed-off-by: willbot <w.a.madden+machine@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Will Madden <madden@prisma.io>
…tream image settings as widening None of them removes a document: a validator applies to later writes only, and collMod can set nothing else that loses data, so collMod defaults to widening too. Dropping a collection stays destructive. The validator classification the planner ran is gone, since every validator change has the same class. The MigrationOperationClass doc and the Migration System doc say that only destructive operations can lose rows or values, and that an operation which fails rather than losing a value is widening. The deferred item about MongoDB index drops is resolved. Signed-off-by: willbot <w.a.madden+machine@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Will Madden <madden@prisma.io>

The Mongo consent journey drops an index without consent and keeps asking for consent to drop a collection. A SQLite nullability tightening applies under a policy without destructive. Signed-off-by: willbot <w.a.madden+machine@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Will Madden <madden@prisma.io>
Merges main, which brings #30606 (autoincrement() on an existing column, and keeping the constraint names Prisma 7 gave a database). Three conflicts: - table-rename-calls.ts: kept this branch's side. Main only swapped constraintRenamesForTableRename for its generalised constraintNameRenames inside postgresTableRenameCalls, which this branch replaced with postgresTableRenameCall and postgresColumnRenameCall over the working schema. Both sides name a renamed constraint the same way: the destination contract's stated name, or else the name derived from the new table name. - table-rename-constraint-renames.ts: main deleted it because constraintNameRenames replaced its only function. This branch rewrote it to pair constraints on the working schema, and the column rename companions share its pairedConstraintRenames, so it stays. It picks up main's stored-name derivation through default-constraint-names.ts. Main's constraint-name-renames.ts stays for the planner's renames of constraints on tables that keep their name. - skills/prisma-8/references/migrations.md: kept both edits to the Columns line: this branch's renameColumn and main's fn('autoincrement()') note on setDefault. The tests #30606 added call the planner without the origin and statements options this branch made required. They now pass origin: null and an empty statements list. Signed-off-by: willbot <w.a.madden+machine@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Will Madden <madden@prisma.io>
Main's pass that renames constraints whose names change read the schema from before the plan's rename statements. When a table is renamed and a new table takes its old name, it paired the old table's primary key with the new table's and planned a rename on a table that is only being created. It now reads the working schema, as the rest of the plan does. Signed-off-by: willbot <w.a.madden+machine@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Will Madden <madden@prisma.io>

…ld lose MigrationPlannerSuccessResult carries dataLoss and accessWidening, one entry per operation with its position in the plan and its subject. Postgres and SQLite read their calls and map each table or column to a model or field of the origin contract; a SQLite recreate that leaves a column out is the operation that loses it. Postgres lists policy drops and disabling row-level security as access widening, leaving out the drop of a policy the plan replaces. MongoDB lists collection drops. The aggregate planner carries both lists per space, and db update reports them positioned in the operations of every space. Signed-off-by: willbot <w.a.madden+machine@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Will Madden <madden@prisma.io>
With no origin contract, the live column carries no codec. Its normalised type name is the text a migration writes for int2, int4, int8, float4 and float8, so the planner maps it to a data type and checks the same safe widenings that migration plan uses. A list column is never a safe widening. Signed-off-by: willbot <w.a.madden+machine@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Will Madden <madden@prisma.io>
…mes need the origin contract delete is a statement verb. Its text names a model, a field or a storage name, and is matched against the plan later, so resolution only checks it is well formed. A missing origin contract now refuses the first rename statement, not every run that has statements. Signed-off-by: willbot <w.a.madden+machine@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Will Madden <madden@prisma.io>
…ations, named by storage, never by label A space db update applies from recorded migrations has no planner to map its operations to models, so each destructive operation is listed with a storage subject. The family names it from the operation's target details through the new storageNameOf capability, else by the operation's id. A planner's fallback for an unknown destructive call uses the same naming, never the label. A delete statement accepts any non-empty text, since a storage name can contain a colon. …estions skip the snapshot steps An allow is keyed by its operation's label and subject rather than its position, and each consented allow takes its position from the new plan after a typed rename, so it is asked once and reported where it now is. A question on a target that carries out no rename gives its keep-the-data text without the steps that would make a rename possible. …rinted advice, before shipping (prisma#30660) On 8 October a pull request passed its CI, was approved, and was then thrown out of the merge queue by two integration tests it never touched: ```text prisma#30648 PR CI: all checks pass → merge queue: failed test/integration/test/cli-journeys/migration-apply-edge-cases.e2e.test.ts test/integration/test/cli-journeys/rollback-cycle.e2e.test.ts ``` The PR made `prisma migration plan` refuse plans that drop data unless the user passes `--delete`. Those two old tests planned column drops with no `--delete`. PR CI skips integration tests on purpose, because they are slow and costly, so nothing ran them until the queue. This PR adds a rule so that does not happen again: **before queueing a change to what a command does, run every integration and e2e test file that runs that command.** It adds four more rules learned from the same piece of work. All five are written where the agents that plan and build our projects read them before they start. ## Where the rules go Agent-run projects in this repo follow a process called Drive. Its team-specific lessons live in `drive/`, and agents read them before writing a spec, planning work or reviewing it. After a piece of work ships, a retrospective looks at what went wrong and writes the lesson there. This PR is that retrospective for the work that made `migration plan` and `db update` refuse to lose data (prisma#30648) and the CLI engine change it needed (prisma/prisma-cli#337). Lessons in `drive/calibration/failure-modes.md` are numbered entries, each with a symptom, a cause, what to do instead and the incident that taught it. The five rules: 1. **Find the tests that run a changed command, including through helpers, and run them before queueing** (F44, plus a line in `drive/calibration/dod.md`). The incident above. Most tests do not name the command: they call a helper such as `planMigrationAndSelfEmit` in `journey-test-helpers.ts`, so a search for the command name alone misses them. 2. **When a change needs a new API in another package or repository, its spec shows the code that will call it** (F43). The CLI engine change was specified in the engine's own terms. It passed review and then needed three reworks when the ORM came to use it: its flags clashed with the ORM's, the ORM could not read the values it needed, and it refused a character that database names can contain. 3. **When a safety check moves to a new mechanism, list every path the old check covered** (F45). The old `db update` consent counted destructive operations from every source. The new data-loss questions read from the planner, and migrations recorded by extensions never reach the planner, so their destructive operations would have run without being asked about. A reviewer caught it. 4. **Follow every piece of advice a command prints, on each database, and check the result** (F46). Several refusals printed steps that, if followed, dropped a table, moved half of a collection's documents, or ran against the wrong database. Tests checked that the text was there; only running the steps found the problems. This happened in the work before as well. 5. **Read the architecture overview, subsystem docs and decision records before writing a spec** (`drive/spec/README.md`). The spec for this work was stopped until that reading was done, and the reading found a CLI-wide consent rule that changed the design. The record of the retrospective is `projects/migration-statements/retros.md`. It is project scratch and is deleted when the project closes; the rules above are what stays. ## Alternatives considered - **Keep the lessons only in the project folder.** It is deleted at close-out, and other projects never read it. - **Put them in the shared Drive skills in prisma/ignite.** Each lesson has one or two incidents so far, all in this repo. The repo's convention is to promote a lesson upstream after it repeats. - **Run integration tests in PR CI instead of rule 1.** Rejected on cost; they stay in the merge queue. A user deletes the
Legacymodel from the contract source, renamesProfiletoUser, and plans a migration. They say what they did aboutProfile, but not aboutLegacy:Nothing is written. Adding
--delete Legacywrites the plan, and itsStatements appliedblock listsdelete model "Legacy" (1 operation). When a person runs the same command in a terminal, it asks instead:Before this PR,
migration planwrote that drop with no question at all, anddb updateasked a single yes/no for the whole plan (--confirm <database>).The decision
migration plananddb updatenow refuse any plan that loses data until the user has answered for each operation that loses it:--delete Legacy(yes, the data goes) or--rename Legacy:Archive(it was a rename; keep the data). There is no longer one consent for the whole plan, and--confirmno longer consents to data loss. This builds on #30638 (merged), which added
--rename. That PR stops the planner dropping a renamed table when the user says it was renamed. This PR closes the other side: when the user says nothing, nothing is lost. How it works
1. Which operations count as losing data. An operation is
destructiveonly when it can lose rows or values: dropping a table, a column or a collection, and a type change the database cannot convert without loss. Operations that change structure without losing data arewidening, and are no longer asked about:SET NOT NULL, safe type widenings such asint4toint8(ondb updatetoo, read from the live column's type), a SQLite table rebuild that only changes nullability, and MongoDB index and validator changes.2. What each operation would lose. The planner result now lists each data-losing operation with the model or field it belongs to, in contract names. It maps table and column names back through the origin contract (the one the database is at now) and through any
--renamegiven. Where no contract declares the thing, for example a table an extension's migration drops, it uses the storage name. The framework never sees a table or column; the SQL family and the MongoDB target do the mapping.3. Asking. The CLI turns each listed operation into one question and asks them all before anything is written or applied. The answers come from three places, in order:
--delete Legacyor--rename Legacy:Archive;deleteorrename Legacy:Archive.A
renametyped at the prompt is added to the given renames and the plan is run again. A--deletethat answers no question fails before anything happens, so a mistyped name never passes silently. A dry run lists the questions, marks which ones the given flags answer, and asks nothing.4. Who can read the rows (
db updateonly). Dropping a row-level-security policy, or disabling row-level security, loses no data, but it can let more users read or write a table's rows.db updateasks about each such operation the same way, answered with--allow User.migration plandoes not ask, because the migration is reviewed before it is applied.5. When
db updatehas no origin contract.db updatefinds the origin contract through the snapshot stored for the database marker's hash. Without one it cannot map tables back to models, so the questions name tables, only--deleteis offered, and each question gives the steps that store the snapshot so--renamebecomes possible.6. The CLI engine change. The asking, the refusal and the prompt are one mechanism in the shared CLI engine, added in prisma/prisma-cli#337 and released as
@prisma/cli-engine0.7.0, which this PR adopts. Each command declares the statements it accepts (migration plan:renameanddelete;db update: alsoallow). The engine parses those flags for that command only, answers questions from them, and builds the refusal and the prompt. So the flag the refusal tells you to pass is always one the prompt would accept, and vice versa.7. The control API.
