A MongoDB user renames model Profile to User, renames field name to fullName, and removes field nickname:

$ prisma migration plan --name tidy --rename Profile:User --rename User.name:User.fullName --delete User.nickname
✔ Planned 6 operation(s)
Rename collection profiles to users widening
  Drop index users.name_1 widening
Rename field name to fullName in users widening
Remove field nickname from users destructive
  Create index users.fullName_1 additive
  Update validator on users widening

Until now, MongoDB refused every --rename and printed steps to run by hand in mongosh. Removing a field asked nothing, and every document that still held the field then failed each later update against the closed validator Prisma writes.

The decision

MongoDB now carries out the same statements as Postgres and SQLite, through both migration plan and db update:

  • --rename Profile:User renames the collection. Its documents, indexes and validator are kept.
  • --rename User.name:User.fullName renames the field in every document.
  • Removing a field is data loss, as dropping a column is on SQL. It is asked about, and --delete User.nickname removes the field from every document. Without --delete, both commands refuse.

How it works, step by step

  1. New operations. renameCollection, renameField and unsetField exist end to end: factories you can call in migration.ts, the runner, the operation serializer and the preview text. A re-run of the written migration.ts reproduces ops.json.
  2. Classes by effect. A field rename is widening and a field removal is destructive, as a column rename and a column drop are on SQL. db update refuses the data class, so this is what lets it run them. A transform built with dataTransform stays data. The runner and serializer tell a DML operation (one that runs queries) from a DDL operation by its shape. ADR 188 is amended to say so.
  3. Safe order. Index drops, then the document rewrites, then index creates, then validator changes. A unique index on the old field does not fail once documents lose it, and one on the new field sees the moved values. The rewrites skip validation, because the old validator requires the old field. Before a rename, a check refuses if a document already holds the new name; after it, a check lets a re-run skip finished work, so an interrupted rename finishes when run again.
  4. Names. A statement names a field by its contract key. On MongoDB that is the stored name: id @map("_id") is User._id.
  5. Variants. A variant's field rename touches only that variant's documents, filtered by its discriminator value. A base field moved to one variant is removed from the other variants' documents, and asked about first.
  6. Refusals, each with steps that work when followed as printed: renaming or removing _id; field names MongoDB reads as paths or operators; time-series collections; a variant rename that changes its discriminator value; a collection name MongoDB rejects; collections whose control policy is not managed are left alone.
  7. The temporary MongoDB refusal is gone: TargetMigrationsCapability.renameStatements and keepDataByHand.

Two changes reach beyond MongoDB:

  • Advice that keeps data when only a table or collection name changes. A model that keeps its name but changes @@map gives a question that, besides --delete, says how to keep the rows or documents. This restores, for SQL, the manual steps chosen for this case when the data-loss refusal was introduced (TML-3476: migration plan and db update refuse to lose data until each drop is answered with --delete or --rename #30648), through a new optional keepDataAdvice on the data-loss entry.
  • A migration.ts finds the config that owns it. Without --config, node migration.ts uses the nearest prisma.config.ts above the file, then the one in the working directory, whichever has a migrations directory that holds the file. If neither does, it stops with CLI.MIGRATION_CONFIG_NOT_FOUND, naming the configs it checked. So the advice to run a migration.ts works from any directory and names no path tied to where migrations are stored; every printed node command carries the --config the command was given.

A temporary limit

A MongoDB contract written with the TypeScript builder has no validator today, unlike the same contract written in PSL. So its field names are not in its storage hash, and a field rename or removal would give a migration whose start and end hashes are equal, which db migrate refuses. migration plan refuses that change and points to db update. TML-3553, the next piece of this project, gives TypeScript contracts the same validator as PSL and removes this refusal.

Upgrade notes

  • App: MongoDB renames work; removing a field now asks; previews print db.getCollection("x"); new refusals; node migration.ts finds the config whose migrations directory holds it.
  • Extension: renameStatements and keepDataByHand are gone (shipped in rc.17); MongoDataTransformOperation is now MongoDmlOperation; the new DDL command; bypassDocumentValidation on RawUpdateManyCommand.

How it was checked

Built in four steps, each reviewed by someone running the code against mongodb-memory-server; then an architecture review and a code review of the whole change; a manual QA run following every printed advice as printed. On every pair of the repository's 54 MongoDB contracts, plans with no statements and no removed fields are identical to main's (5,617 cases). Before queueing, every integration and e2e file that runs these commands was run.

Alternatives considered

  • Name MongoDB fields as written in the schema. The contract does not keep that name, so this would change the contract, its hashes and the client.
  • Class the rewrites data, as ADR 188 said. Then db update could not run a rename, while it runs SQL renames.
  • Rename a variant's field in every document, as SQL renames a shared column. Will chose to filter by discriminator, so another variant's same-named field keeps its value.
  • Hold this until TypeScript contracts get a validator. Will chose to ship with the temporary refusal and do that next.

A hand-written migration can call renameCollection('profiles', 'users'). The command goes through the query AST, wire command, lowering, driver, operation serializer and preview text. It checks that the source exists and the target does not, and a re-run skips once the target exists without the source. The planner does not use it yet.

…ator

Both factories run one updateMany with bypassDocumentValidation, through the raw command, wire command, lowering and driver. renameField is widening and unsetField destructive, so db update runs them while a data transform stays refused. The runner and the operation serializer tell an operation that runs queries from one that executes DDL by its shape, not by the data class. A rewrite's storage name is <collection>.<field>, and every MongoDB preview line names its collection with db.getCollection("<name>").

…MongoDB reads as paths

renameField's before-check now matches only documents holding both the old and the new name, which is what $rename would overwrite, so an interrupted rename can finish. Both factories refuse an empty field name, _id, a name containing a dot and a name starting with $ with MIGRATION.FIELD_NAME_UNSUPPORTED, and renameField refuses renaming a field to its own name. The preview shows run steps only for field rewrites, so a user's data transform previews as before.

…ved fields

A model statement whose collection changes renames the collection in the schema the diff starts from and plans renameCollection. A field statement plans renameField, filtered to a variant's documents by its discriminator value. A field the destination no longer stores, in a collection the plan keeps, plans unsetField and is reported as lost, so the data-loss question offers rename and delete. The planner refuses _id, field names MongoDB reads as paths or operators, time-series collections, a missing source or taken target collection, a collection name MongoDB rejects, a field stored on one side only, and collections whose control policy is not managed. The temporary refusal (renameStatements, keepDataByHand) is deleted.

…cts, and every printed advice works

A base field moved to one variant is now unset from the documents of every other variant, filtered by discriminator $nin, and asked about as a field. Without an origin contract, a destination collection with no validator says nothing about removed fields and is skipped. A field question whose model the destination names differently offers only delete and says to pass the model rename first. The storage question says --delete loses that data on both families. The resolver reads Model.a.b as the field "a.b" when no namespace is named Model, so the planner names the real reason. Refusal advice that failed when followed is reworded.

…hat variant, and printed advice for collection changes and time-series collections works

A field statement on a root model renames only the documents of variants that do not now store the old name, with the same $nin filter the removal uses. The advice for a field rename whose collection changes now says to run node migration.ts again before migrate. The planner compares a time-series or clustered collection's options only on the keys the contract declares, as verify does, so the server's own defaults no longer read as an immutable change.

Journeys on PSL contracts with documents rename a model and a uniquely indexed field, rename a variant's field and remove a field, through migration plan and migrate and through db update, following every printed flag. fieldRewriteOf reads an operation as a renameField or unsetField rewrite when it is one updateMany that skips validation and renames or unsets one field. The preview and the storage-name helper both use it, so a hand-written transform is neither previewed nor named as a field.

📝 Walkthrough

MongoDB migration planning and execution now support collection renames, field renames, and field removals in supported cases. The change also adds data-loss advice and migration-file config discovery, and updates related documentation and tests.

Changes: Migration planning and execution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Data-loss advice and consent questions
packages/1-framework/1-core/framework-components/src/control/*, packages/1-framework/3-tooling/cli/src/control-api/statements/*, packages/2-sql/9-family/src/core/migrations/*, packages/3-targets/3-targets/{postgres,sqlite}/src/core/migrations/*, related tests
Data-loss entries can include advice for keeping data. Field-loss questions now guide users to rename a model first when needed. SQL planners supply table-rename advice through a shared interface.
MongoDB rewrite operation model
packages/2-mongo-family/4-query/query-ast/src/*, packages/2-mongo-family/6-transport/*, packages/2-mongo-family/9-family/src/core/*, packages/3-mongo-target/1-mongo-target/src/core/migrations/{migration-factories.ts,mongo-ops-serializer.ts,op-factory-call.ts,render-ops.ts}, related tests
MongoDB DML types support operation classes beyond data. Collection-renaming commands and validation-bypassing field rewrites are represented, serialized, and previewed.
MongoDB statement and removal planning
packages/3-mongo-target/1-mongo-target/src/core/migrations/{mongo-planner.ts,mongo-statement-planning.ts,same-hash-field-changes.ts}, related tests
The planner handles supported collection and field renames and field removals. It orders rewrites with schema operations, applies filters to variant documents, reports data loss, and refuses specified unsupported cases.
MongoDB rewrite execution
packages/3-mongo-target/1-mongo-target/src/core/migrations/mongo-runner.ts, packages/3-mongo-target/2-mongo-adapter/src/mongo-adapter.ts, packages/3-mongo-target/3-mongo-driver/src/mongo-driver.ts, MongoDB integration tests
The runner dispatches DML by operation shape and reports targeted precheck and validation-authorization failures. The adapter and driver execute collection renames and pass validation-bypass options to updateMany. Tests cover rewrite results, prechecks, and repeat execution.
Migration-file config discovery
packages/1-framework/1-core/errors/src/*, packages/1-framework/3-tooling/cli/src/{migration-cli.ts,orm/migration/*,utils/*}, related tests
The CLI selects an explicit config or checks candidate configs for migration-file ownership. Generated self-emission commands include --config when provided. A structured error reports when no checked config owns the migration.
Migration behavior and command documentation
docs/architecture docs/*, docs/reference/error-reference.md, packages/1-framework/3-tooling/cli/README.md, skills/*, upgrade-instructions/pending/mongo-rename-delete-statements/*, integration journeys
Documentation and journey tests describe MongoDB rename and deletion behavior, planner restrictions, config discovery, and migration-file commands.

The new rewrites preserve important policy and ownership checks, but field renaming does not atomically prevent overwriting a destination value written concurrently. Interrupted migrations also leave intermediate changes rather than rolling back. Risk depends on whether document writers are stopped during migration and what validation permits.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new field-rename operation can overwrite a concurrently written destination value. Its precheck rejects documents holding both names, but the subsequent update filters only for source-field existence. If a permitted writer adds the destination between these commands, the rename can replace that value and still pass the source-absence postcheck. This threatens data-integrity and failure-containment guarantees where concurrent writers are allowed. Closed validators reduce ordinary-writer reachability; external quiescence was not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The intended rewrite scope is the selected collection and any supplied document predicate. An unfiltered root-model rewrite can affect every document holding the source field in that collection, potentially spanning application tenants stored together. No application-tenant predicate is added by these factories; no cross-service or cross-environment attack path was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The retained architecture concern requires both migration execution and a concurrent writer permitted to store the destination field after the collision check. Such a writer can expose the source-only update filter to a collision that the postcheck cannot detect. This is a conditional data-integrity failure, not demonstrated unauthenticated access or privilege escalation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — db update excludes data-class operations, and the runner independently enforces allowed classes before execution. Rewrite factories reject _id, embedded-path names, and operator-prefixed field names. Planner-generated statements also reject unmanaged collections and unsupported collection or field transitions.
  • observed — Automatic config selection checks realpath-based containment before accepting an owning config, but evaluates candidate modules before that check. The PR therefore broadens automatic executable-config discovery. Whether a discovered ancestor config is outside the user's trusted local configuration boundary remains unresolved; ownership rejection is not an execution sandbox.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Retry support contains ordinary interruption but does not make the multi-step migration atomic. Failures after an index drop or document rewrite can leave intermediate data and schema visible until recovery. Marker CAS detects competing marker advancement after execution; it does not serialize application document writes.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make destination absence part of the atomic rename update predicate while retaining a postcheck that refuses unresolved source documents. Explicitly define and enforce writer quiescence for index and validator transitions that cannot be protected by a per-document predicate.

- Around line 122-125: Update asDeclared to exclude only known server-filled
keys when comparing plain objects, while retaining other origin keys even when
the destination omits them. This ensures removed immutable options such as
metaField and clusteredIndex remain visible to hasImmutableOptionChange.
- Around line 184-207: Update collectionDrops so its created-collection check
also recognizes collections created by planned CreateIndexCall operations,
allowing keepDataAdvice when the destination collection is introduced through
index creation. Preserve the existing CreateCollectionCall handling.

…s reported as an immutable change

The planner ignored every origin key the destination does not name, so dropping metaField or a clustered index name planned nothing. It now ignores only the keys MongoDB fills in when they are absent: granularity "seconds", bucketMaxSpanSeconds and bucketRoundingSeconds for a time-series collection, and v, key, unique and the name "_id_" for a clustered index, as listCollections reports them.

…ollection the plan creates only with indexes

The advice was given only when a createCollection call created the destination collection. A collection with indexes but no options or validator is created by its first createIndex, so its drop offered only --delete. The check now asks whether the destination collection is absent from the planned origin schema and present in the destination.

… and advice no longer names a migrations path

runMigration looked for prisma.config.ts in the working directory, though its doc said it walked up from the migration file. It now loads the nearest config above the migration directory unless --config names one. Advice in the CLI, the SQL family and the MongoDB target says to run node on the migration.ts, without the migrations/app path or a working directory.

…ection first and works when no create exists

When the new collection is created only by its indexes, the plan has no createCollection to replace, and renameCollection placed where the drop was fails its precheck. The advice now says to make renameCollection the first operation, delete the drop, and delete the create if there is one. A journey follows it for a collection with a unique index, through migration plan and db migrate.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Do not accept an unmarked A-absent/B-present state as a completed rename.

When renameCollection(A, B) sees B and does not see A, its postchecks pass and the runner skips the prechecks. If the marker is still at the source revision or is absent, the runner then verifies only the destination schema, advances the marker, and writes the migration ledger. It does not verify that B contains the documents from A.

Require recorded evidence that this specific rename completed, or an explicit recovery mode for the documented manual-rename workflow. Otherwise, run the prechecks so an existing destination returns the target-exists refusal instead of marking the migration successful.

Re the renameCollection postcheck skip in mongo-runner.ts: this is intended, and it matches SQL.

Every runner skips an operation whose postchecks already hold. That is how an interrupted migration finishes when it is run again. Postgres and SQLite renameTable use the same two postchecks ("the new name exists" and "the old name no longer exists"; see packages/3-targets/3-targets/postgres/src/core/migrations/operations/tables.ts). MongoDB's renameCollection is atomic, so if the old collection is gone and the new one exists after an earlier run, the new one holds the documents.

The case where it does not, someone dropping the old collection and creating the new one by hand before db migrate, is drift the runner cannot tell from a finished rename on any database. When both collections exist, the postchecks fail, the precheck runs, and the target-exists refusal is returned. No change here.

…ions directory holds it

The nearest prisma.config.ts above the migration could belong to another project. The file now uses the nearest config only if the migration is inside its migrations directory, then the working directory's config on the same condition, and otherwise fails with CLI.MIGRATION_CONFIG_NOT_FOUND, naming each config it checked. migration new and migration plan repeat the --config they were given in the node command they print, and the re-emit hint of migration package errors says to add it.

… dir>/migration.ts

They named migrations/app/<dir>, which is wrong when migrations.dir is set. The prisma-8 skill and the CLI README also say how the file finds its config and to repeat --config.

…a migrations directory that holds the file

The round-trip tests put migration.ts beside prisma.config.ts, outside the default migrations directory, so the config no longer owns it. Their configs now set migrations.dir to the directory itself. The migration-file-config unit test resets modules before importing, so its mocks hold when the package runs its files in one process.
