Description

Related work and prerequisites

Part of #1948. Extracts the file-read safety boundary from #1950 without closing the feature issue or introducing the dependent batch tool.

Document-buffer decoding prerequisite #2002 is already merged into main. Symlinked-workspace approval matching has now been extracted into the independently mergeable prerequisite #2041.

Exact stacked history

Based on current main at 58341d8, with exactly two commits:

  1. 2f5f7d1cb916f182be66d12a7aa11ca33b649bd1 — the replay of current fix(auto-approval): match symlinked workspace roots #2041 commit 1f1e299368a80adb8093c88c8d47596c8af85775 onto this newer main base. The SHA differs because of the new parent; range-diff confirms the prerequisite patch is equivalent. PR fix(auto-approval): match symlinked workspace roots #2041 itself and its branch were not changed.
  2. c10dece8d734d6ffcfaaaab0100758433dd5b12c — one commit containing the remaining verified-reader, cancellation, legacy, image-helper, and regression-test changes.

The first commit owns fourteen auto-approval files (+997/-72 lines). The second changes only the remaining ten reader-safety files (+2243/-188 lines); ownership remains disjoint. Seven safety-owned source/test files are byte-for-byte identical to the previously published head 3f8be95. The two test suites now include exact document-decoder argument assertions and approved unset/empty-workspace cases. The existing reader suite also retains current main's unused-import cleanup. Display-path assertions now follow the existing forward-slash display contract on Windows. Content paths keep native separators. No runtime code changed in this review follow-up.

The only main/replay conflict was in that test import block. It was resolved by combining main's unused-import cleanup with the safety commit's switch to descriptor-buffer decoding.

Merge #2041 first, then rebase this PR onto main so the copied approval prerequisite drops out of its diff. Until then, this branch deliberately carries the equivalent prerequisite plus one safety commit.

Reader safety and cancellation scope

  • Capture the canonical target and bigint device/inode identity before approval. Validate both the requested path and resolved target, and classify real workspace roots so an internal alias to an external file receives the actual external approval policy.
  • Open approved targets with no-follow protection where supported, compare descriptor identity, consume bytes through that same descriptor, and close it on every exit path. Reject canonical-file, final-symlink, and parent-directory replacement without disclosing replacement bytes.
  • Consume descriptor-bound ordinary text, supported image bytes, and PDF/DOCX/IPYNB/XLSX bytes. The positioned binary probe does not consume the subsequent payload. Decoders use the already-merged buffer boundary from refactor(extraction): decode documents from required buffers #2002; no extraction-module changes are included here.
  • Observe existing task cancellation flags through a task-bound cancellation object and checked asynchronous operations. A typed cancellation error retains its original identity and stack when propagated.
  • Honor cancellation in BOTH native and legacy readers, including pre-cancelled calls, approval, metadata, probes, image processing, provider lookup, text reads, tracking, cleanup, result publication, and later files in a legacy batch.
  • Discard late content and late technical failures without incorrectly setting read-failure or user-rejection flags. Preserve already-received approval feedback, including image-only feedback. Already-started non-cancellable work cannot be rolled back; its late result is discarded and acquired descriptors are still closed.

Compatibility and explicit behavior change

Keep the public reader interface/exported singleton, ordinary string formatting, legacy multi-file/range/image behavior, and uncancelled legacy text fallback when binary probing fails.

Legacy cancellation is intentionally corrected: it no longer keeps reading after the task is cancelled. The previous description's claim that legacy cancellation policy was unchanged no longer applies.

The identity check pins the approved file, not a content snapshot: in-place writes to the same inode are not target replacement.

No batch tool, raw-document API, numeric/range overhaul, formatter/strategy architecture overhaul, prompts, settings, persisted lifecycle transitions, dependency changes, changesets, or changelog edits are introduced by the safety commit.

Verification

Validated this rebuilt stack on Node 22.23.1 and pnpm 10.8.1:

  • 841 focused tests passed in 30 suites, including reader, cancellation, real-filesystem safety, extraction compatibility, image/mention handling, and approval policy.
  • The public safety integration suite retains its 142 scenarios, including descriptor cleanup, native/legacy cancellation, late errors/results, received feedback, symlink policies, and approved-byte handling.
  • Full monorepo tests passed: 13/13 Turbo tasks, including 10,832 backend tests passed and 39 skipped.
  • Monorepo lint and type checks passed: 11/11 tasks each. Current main's enabled lint rules and changed-file formatting passed. Scoped ESLint pruning did not change suppression entries or counts; whitespace checks passed.
  • The lifecycle model-check umbrella passed. This remains compatibility evidence for its documented bounded protocols, not a claim that the models prove file-reader behavior.
  • The two-commit stack on current main, prerequisite patch equivalence, disjoint 14+10 file ownership, seven byte-for-byte safety-file identities, and the two focused test changes were checked programmatically.
  • Normal hooks remained enabled. Push hooks passed type checks and full monorepo tests. The old published and intermediate local histories are retained in backup refs; the update used an explicit lease against the old published head.
  • Local uncommitted editor settings and extraction notes were restored without changing their bytes. PR fix(auto-approval): match symlinked workspace roots #2041 and its published SHA were left unchanged.

Remote CI and review must rerun against this new history; local results do not claim remote approval.

Test Procedure

Environment: macOS, Node 22.23.1, pnpm 10.8.1.

  1. Check out the final head and install the workspace dependencies.
  2. From the backend package, run the reader and safety integration suites with Vitest. The current run passed 224 tests.
  3. Verify PDF and DOCX decoder arguments match each source buffer and resolved path.
  4. Verify unset and empty workspace roots require external approval in modern and legacy reads.
  5. Verify no content I/O starts before approval. Approved reads return the expected bytes and close their descriptors.
  6. Run the full workspace test, lint, and type-check commands. All 13 test tasks and all 11 lint/type tasks passed.
  7. Run scoped ESLint with suppression pruning, formatting, and whitespace checks. Suppression counts did not increase.

The final follow-up passed 10,832 backend tests with 39 skipped. The four new cases are included in that run.
The earlier 30-suite focused run passed 841 tests before this test-only follow-up.
The existing lifecycle model check passed before the follow-up. No lifecycle code changed.
Native Ubuntu, Windows, mutation, and extension-host E2E results must be checked on the final GitHub head.

Pre-Submission Checklist

  • Issue Linked: Related issue [ENHANCEMENT] Restore bounded multi-file reading in a single native tool call #1948 is referenced. Maintainer approval and assignment are not recorded on GitHub.

Windows CI follow-up

An earlier head failed nine Windows assertions across three parameterized cases.
The displayed paths used forward slashes, as required by the existing path-display helper.
The tests incorrectly expected native backslashes. Canonical content paths and approval decisions matched.
This head changes only those display expectations. The runtime and approval prerequisite remain unchanged.

Local validation passed 224 reader tests and 205 tests in the unchanged provider suite.
The full rerun passed all 13 test tasks, 10,832 backend tests, and all 11 lint/type tasks.
A prior full attempt passed all assertions but hit a Vitest worker teardown error. The retry completed without that error.
Fresh native Windows CI and the full CodeRabbit review must finish on this head.

Full-review contract-test follow-up

A fresh full review identified two weak assertions in the copied approval prerequisite tests.
This PR must keep that prerequisite patch identical to #2041 and keep file ownership disjoint.
The safety layer therefore adds a reader-owned unit contract suite instead of changing prerequisite-owned files.

The new tests assert the exact Windows namespace for a drive-shaped UNC server.
They separately assert the normal drive namespace.
They also assert comparison arguments for the read candidate and both normalized workspace roots.
The matcher result is checked as well.

The copied prerequisite remains 2f5f7d1.
The safety layer now owns ten files. The fourteen prerequisite files remain unchanged and disjoint.
Local validation passed 229 tests across four focused suites, all 13 full test tasks, and all 11 lint/type tasks.
The backend run passed 10,832 tests with 39 skipped. No suppression counts increased.
Fresh CI and automated review must finish on the final head. Fresh human CODEOWNER approval remains required afterward.

Learning: For Zoo-Code PR #1999, the copied #2041 auto-approval prerequisite must remain unchanged. Additional approval-strategy regression coverage belongs in the reader-owned safety layer, such as src/core/tools/file-reading/__tests__/readApprovalStrategy.contract.spec.ts, to preserve disjoint ownership between the prerequisite and safety changes.
📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • File reads, including text, images, and supported documents, now use the file target that was approved.
    • Cancelled or abandoned reads no longer return partial text or images, and do not continue processing after cancellation.
    • File access approvals now handle canonical workspace paths and platform-specific paths more consistently, including Windows drive paths and network shares.
    • Legacy multi-file reads now report file resolution and read failures while retaining text fallback when binary detection fails.

File reads now resolve and verify canonical targets, use verified open handles for content processing, and check cancellation in modern and legacy execution. Read auto-approval matches paths across lexical and canonical workspace roots with POSIX- and Windows-specific strategies.

Workspace path matching
src/core/auto-approval/WorkspaceRootCanonicalizer.ts, src/core/auto-approval/strategies/*, src/core/auto-approval/filePatterns.ts, src/core/auto-approval/__tests__/*
Path matching uses platform-specific strategies for POSIX and Windows roots, including drives and UNC shares. Matching supports equivalent lexical and canonical roots, volume-bounded resolution, and ordered include and exclude patterns.
Canonical read approval

Read approval resolves the workspace root and supplies it to path matching. Tests cover allowlist decisions, drive-relative roots, resolution failures, and symlinked workspaces.
Target verification and cancellation
src/core/tools/file-reading/ReadFileTarget.ts, src/core/tools/file-reading/ReadFileCancellation.ts, src/core/tools/file-reading/ReadFileCancelledError.ts, src/core/tools/file-reading/__tests__/*
ReadFileTarget captures canonical paths and file identity, then verifies identity when opening a handle. ReadFileCancellation checks task flags around asynchronous operations.
Handle-based reads
src/core/tools/ReadFileTool.ts, src/core/tools/helpers/imageHelpers.ts, src/core/tools/__tests__/readFileTool.spec.ts
Modern and legacy reads use verified handles for text, binary probes, images, and documents. Image and document processing use handle-backed data. Cancellation removes partial content and retains available approval feedback.
Read safety integration coverage
src/core/tools/file-reading/__tests__/readFileSafety.integration.spec.ts
Integration tests cover approval and target verification, reads across file formats, cancellation at asynchronous boundaries, error reporting, range reads, and descriptor closure.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

Focused regression coverage is present. The new reader integration suite covers native and legacy reads, target replacement, symlinked workspaces, missing and deferred filesystem errors, ignored paths, binary/image/document reads, ranges, approval feedback, and cancellation at I/O and processing boundaries. Unit suites cover ReadFileCancellation, ReadFileTarget, workspace-root strategies, canonicalization, Windows/POSIX negative cases, and unset workspace roots. Existing reader tests cover directory, image, binary, extraction, legacy, and error paths. The diff changes no UI components, so the Playwright snapshot condition is not applicable.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No concrete changed-path security bypass is present. In both reader paths, the input is resolved to a canonical ReadFileTarget, RooIgnore checks run again against that canonical path, and approval messages use the canonical target. Approved reads use an opened descriptor and verify device/inode before all text, image, and document reads. Auto-approval resolves the workspace root and matches the canonical target spelling, so an internal symlink to an external file does not inherit the workspace allowlist.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence path meets the failure condition. The PR adds read-only filesystem operations in ReadFileTarget and imageHelpers. The changed ReadFileTool metadata calls use await task.fileContextTracker.trackFileContext(...), and task messages and approvals are also awaited. No changed production file adds a non-atomic write, rollback-sensitive write, or persisted default that is not passed to its consumer.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No concrete changed lifecycle leak or duplicate-work path found. The new descriptor resource is acquired in ReadFileTarget.withHandle and closed in a finally block, including cancellation and read failures (ReadFileTarget.ts:54-67). ReadFileTool uses this scope for native and legacy reads, and cancellation checks stop later files and suppress late publication. The integration tests also verify descriptor closure and that cancellation prevents a second legacy file (readFileSafety.integration.spec.ts:304-321, 328-350). The PR adds no listener, watcher, or timer lifecycle that lacks cleanup.

The description includes the required issue, implementation, testing, checklist, documentation, and reviewer-note sections. It provides detailed scope and verification evidence. Issue approval and a Discord username are not supplied, but the description explicitly identifies these pending items rather than omitting the relevant information.

Published eff55626c with an exact lease against the prior head. The Windows job on the prior head failed nine display-path assertions: the established display helper returns forward slashes, while the tests expected native backslashes. Three shared expectations now use the display contract. Native canonical content paths and approval decisions are still asserted separately. No runtime or prerequisite code changed.

The branch still has exactly two commits on current main: the unchanged copied #2041 prerequisite, then the amended safety layer. PRs #2041 and #1950 were not pushed or changed.

Validation passed: 224 focused reader tests, 205 tests in the unchanged provider suite, all 13 full test tasks (10,830 backend tests; 39 skipped), and all 11 lint/type tasks. A prior full attempt had a Vitest worker teardown error after all assertions passed; the retry finished cleanly. Scoped suppression counts, formatting, whitespace, and protected local-file hashes were checked.

Fresh CI and full CodeRabbit review are pending for this head. All three existing bot threads are resolved. Issue approval and fresh human review have not been fabricated or bypassed.

Please review the complete current head eff5562. Required CI has passed, including native Windows and Ubuntu, mutation testing, compile, and mocked E2E. The three earlier actionable bot threads are resolved, but the overall summary still covers an older commit.

Please verify the current code, regression coverage, and pre-merge summary. The description records the exact two-commit stack and the focused fixes. Issue approval and fresh maintainer approval are not claimed; those require real external confirmation.

Learning: In Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code, TypeScript read allowlist matching in src/core/auto-approval/index.ts and src/core/auto-approval/filePatterns.ts uses canonical equivalence only for the task's own workspace root. Resolve patterns against the lexical task root before translating an equivalent workspace-root prefix. Preserve ordered exclusions and re-inclusion within each independent read/write list, existing write-implies-read behavior, and lexical-parent meaning for escaping relative patterns. Do not match arbitrary file aliases as alternatives to their canonical targets: an internal alias resolving outside the workspace requires an external-target pattern. Do not extend this root translation to write approval.

Keep the symlinked-workspace approval prerequisite unchanged. Pin approved targets to verified descriptors, consume descriptor-bound text/document/image bytes, close resources on all paths, and honor cancellation in both native and legacy readers while preserving received approval feedback.

Final verification for c10dece8d:

  • All 18 latest check contexts are successful, including the advisory PR review gate. Native Windows and Ubuntu, compile/QA, mocked E2E, mutation testing, CodeQL, and patch coverage passed. QA, E2E, and mutation workflow runs were verified against this exact head.
  • CodeRabbit submitted an actual APPROVED review at 2026-10-14 15:10:55 UTC: fix(read-file): bind approved reads to verified targets #1999 (review).
  • The latest summary covers this exact head and states that the recent review generated no actionable comments. All four bot threads are resolved. CodeRabbit explicitly accepted the reader-owned contract tests without changes to the copied prerequisite.
  • The summary retains a non-blocking description warning about unrecorded issue approval and the unknown Discord handle. It also retains an explicitly non-blocking test-assertion note. No approval, identity, or waiver was fabricated.
  • Local validation passed 229 focused tests, all 13 full test tasks (10,832 backend tests; 39 skipped), and all 11 lint/type tasks. Suppression counts, formatting, and whitespace passed.
  • The stack remains exactly two commits on current main: unchanged copied prerequisite 2f5f7d1, then the safety commit. File ownership remains disjoint: fourteen prerequisite files and ten safety files. Range-diff confirms prerequisite patch equivalence to unchanged fix(auto-approval): match symlinked workspace roots #2041.
  • Protected local files retain all original hashes. PRs fix(auto-approval): match symlinked workspace roots #2041 and refactor: isolate reusable file-reading foundation (part of #1948) #1950 retain their original heads.

GitHub still reports REVIEW_REQUIRED and blocks merging. The native rule requires one approving review and CODEOWNER approval; the repository workflow awaits fresh human maintainer or CODEOWNER approval. Successful CI and bot approval do not replace that human requirement. Review protections and managed labels were not bypassed.

WebMad added a commit to WebMad/Zoo-Code that referenced this pull request Oct 14, 2026
Retain the exact approval and safety prerequisite commits from PR Zoo-Code-Org#1999. Reuse verified target/cancellation and image I/O helpers, preserve request policy snapshots and presenter ownership, and keep the residual constructor-composed reader strategies, block formatting, raw-document bounds and numeric validation. Port all safety regressions through the new boundary; add exact decoder, ignored-target display and late-diagnostic tests without new lint suppressions.
