Related issue and residual scope

Part of #1948. This is the reusable reader foundation, not the bounded batch feature (#1949), and does not close the issue.

  • Constructor-composed access/approval, modern orchestration, legacy compatibility, error reporting, text processing, result formatting and text/image/document/binary strategies.
  • Reusable per-entry reading and text-only preparation; modern responses preserve content and approval feedback as separate blocks, while ordinary legacy responses remain strings.
  • Raw document processing preserves real number-like prefixes, bounded slices/indentation, numeric validation, empty-document bounds, Unicode-safe clipping and clipping metadata.
  • No batch-tool registration, user setting, changeset, changelog, workflow change, mutation exclusion or gate bypass.

Exact dependency/history structure

Base remains Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code:main at 58341d882e57e9dd7eb50c5187a52917541789eb. This branch now has exactly three commits:

  1. 2f5f7d1cb916f182be66d12a7aa11ca33b649bd1 — copied approval prerequisite from fix(auto-approval): match symlinked workspace roots #2041, replayed onto current main by fix(read-file): bind approved reads to verified targets #1999.
  2. c10dece8d734d6ffcfaaaab0100758433dd5b12c — final verified fix(read-file): bind approved reads to verified targets #1999 safety commit, retained as an exact ancestor.
  3. b4e9d4bb3f15b4eaafce5c0242dcb89733aeed58 — this PR's residual foundation and compatibility adaptations.

Merge the approval prerequisite and #1999 before the residual foundation. The Unicode/image-MIME/streamed-path prerequisites (#1960/#1961/#1962) and byte-only document extraction (#2002) are already in main; they are not duplicated commits here. The old monolithic head ab0f4c6505e199f5b8287217f37385b648d7b53f was backed up locally before the authorized rewrite. Only this PR's fork branch was pushed, using an exact lease against that old head. #1999 and #2041 were not changed.

Conflict and safety decisions

The old monolithic commit was deliberately separated from its overlapping dependencies, rather than blindly restoring its older safety implementation.

  • The final fix(read-file): bind approved reads to verified targets #1999 target, cancellation, image I/O helpers and approval-policy implementation remain byte-identical to fix(read-file): bind approved reads to verified targets #1999.
  • Modern and legacy adapters preserve final fix(read-file): bind approved reads to verified targets #1999 cancellation, descriptor-bound reads, canonical-target approval and received feedback. Provider-state reads finish before opening descriptors; decoder/image/tracking/cleanup boundaries do not deliver late payloads or late technical failures.
  • The obsolete case-colliding cancellation module is not replayed. New strategies use the existing typed cancellation primitive.
  • refactor(extraction): decode documents from required buffers #2002's mandatory-buffer PDF/DOCX/XLSX decoders are retained; raw text is decoded from verified bytes rather than restoring older optional/pathname-based decoder implementations. Historical formatted extraction remains available.
  • Presenter injection preserves main's request-policy snapshot, lock ownership, pending-update draining and recursive continuation. Newer presenter/Task tests were adapted to class-based injection, not discarded.
  • Canonical ignored-target reporting shows only the requested display path. Parser-level pre-coercion numeric rejection is not replayed: numeric strings still reach reader-owned execution validation and precise diagnostics.
  • The relocated historical test suite has no explicit-any suppression entry. The two obsolete reader/test entries (100 suppressions total) are removed; no suppression count increased.

Local verification of the published head

Repository-declared Node 22.23.1 and pnpm 10.8.1; normal pre-commit/pre-push hooks stayed enabled.

  • Full monorepo tests: 13/13 tasks passed, including 11,143 backend tests passed, 39 skipped and 1,998 webview tests passed. The final uncached run also passed all 13 tasks with serial package scheduling. An earlier forced parallel run passed all webview assertions but hit a Vitest worker-shutdown RPC error; the uncached serial confirmation passed without source changes or test exclusions.
  • Full monorepo lint: 11/11 tasks passed; types: 11/11 tasks passed.
  • Complete lifecycle/model-check umbrella passed; this layer observes existing cancellation flags and introduces no lifecycle transition or scheduler mutation.
  • 214 simulated Windows-path reader tests passed.
  • Focused reader/safety/strategy/approval/presenter/Task/parser/extraction/indentation regressions passed. Exact PDF/DOCX decoder arguments, absent/empty workspaces and Windows approval contracts from final fix(read-file): bind approved reads to verified targets #1999 remain covered.
  • Scoped ESLint pruning, formatting, whitespace, case-collision and exact-ancestor checks passed.

Actual remote CI and blockers

Remote checks were inspected on b4e9d4bb3f15b4eaafce5c0242dcb89733aeed58:

  • SUCCESS: Code QA, including compile/lint/types/model checks, Ubuntu, Windows, build, dependency/translation/knip checks; mocked E2E; CodeQL; Codecov patch checks.
  • FAILURE: changed-code mutation capacity, reproduced locally on this exact head.
  • PENDING: final-head CodeRabbit review and PR review gate. CodeRabbit initially reported a successful skipped status under the CI label configuration, which was not an approval; it subsequently started the actual review after required QA passed. The three previously outstanding actionable threads are fixed, replied to and resolved. No current-head approval is claimed yet.

Local success is not remote CI or human approval; this PR is not all-green.

The unchanged mutation selector rejects this stack at 976 changed executable extension lines, limit 500. The same failure is reproducible locally on the published commit, before mutation execution. The old head already had this capacity failure. The residual-only diff against final #1999 also has 767 executable lines, still above 500. Even after #1999 merges, the residual layer requires its own capacity/scope decision; merely changing commit boundaries does not reduce a PR-wide diff.

Obtaining all-green CI therefore requires a maintainer-reviewed narrow exclusion or an explicitly authorized scope split. Neither the executable-line selector nor capacity policy was changed, and no successful mutation result is claimed. Automated review is still being checked on the final head. Real CODEOWNER/maintainer approval remains external and is not fabricated.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • File reading now supports a broader range of text and document formats, with improved line-range and indentation-based reading.
    • Image reads support PNG, JPG, JPEG, GIF, and WebP; other binary image formats are identified as unsupported.
    • File reads now handle cancellation more cleanly and apply stricter validation to line and range settings.
    • File approval patterns work more consistently across canonical workspace paths and Windows drive and network paths.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid file-reading ranges return clear errors instead of being silently adjusted.

The pull request replaces the former ReadFileTool implementation with a modular file-reading package. It adds shared validation, content strategies, verified-descriptor reads, cancellation handling, workspace-root-aware approval matching, and assistant-message support for shared or injected tool instances.

Changes: Read-file handling and approval

Layer / File(s) Summary
Read contracts and output formatting
src/core/tools/file-reading/types.ts, src/core/tools/file-reading/readFileConstants.ts, src/core/tools/file-reading/readFileValidation.ts, src/core/prompts/tools/native-tools/read_file.ts, src/integrations/misc/indentation-reader.ts, src/integrations/misc/extract-text.ts, related tests
Shared constants and numeric constraints are used by the tool schema and line readers. Slice and indentation reads validate numeric inputs. Document extraction supports raw text from supplied buffers, while existing formatted output remains available.
Workspace-root matching and auto-approval
src/core/auto-approval/*, src/core/auto-approval/strategies/*, src/core/tools/file-reading/__tests__/readApprovalStrategy.contract.spec.ts, related tests
Platform-specific path strategies and workspace-root canonicalization support matching across lexical and canonical workspace roots. Read approval resolves the workspace root and passes its canonical path to the matcher.
Access checks, file identity, and cancellation
src/core/tools/file-reading/ReadFileAccess.ts, src/core/tools/file-reading/ReadFileTarget.ts, src/core/tools/file-reading/ReadFileCancellation.ts, src/core/tools/file-reading/ModernFileReader.ts, src/core/tools/helpers/imageHelpers.ts, safety and cancellation integration tests
The reader checks ignore rules and approval before content access. It verifies target identity and reads through a file handle. Cancellation checks cover access, resolution, descriptor operations, and later read stages.
Content strategies and result formatting
src/core/tools/file-reading/ReadFileContentReader.ts, src/core/tools/file-reading/strategies/*, src/core/tools/file-reading/ReadFileResultFormatter.ts, src/core/tools/file-reading/ReadFileTextProcessor.ts, related tests
The content reader selects text, image, document, or binary strategies. The formatter creates text and image blocks based on read and approval status. Tests cover image-format support, document reads, text processing, and output formatting.
Tool dispatch and legacy compatibility
src/core/tools/file-reading/ReadFileTool.ts, src/core/tools/file-reading/LegacyFileReader.ts, src/core/assistant-message/presentAssistantMessage.ts, related tests, src/core/tools/ReadFileTool.ts
The new tool dispatches modern and legacy requests. Assistant-message processing accepts a default or injected tool instance and passes it through recursive processing. The former tool implementation and its test file are removed.

The refactor is broadly mergeable. Two narrow issues remain. When another prompt supersedes a pending text-only approval, the read reports cancellation instead of an error. A blocked symlinked file may still show its resolved location instead of the path that was requested. Both are low-impact follow-ups.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The PR adds broad, focused coverage for its changed behavior. Evidence: - New unit tests in readFileTool.spec.ts (about 3,178 lines) cover reader routing across text, image, document, and binary paths, including textOnly. They also cover approval rejection, approval technical failure (mockRejectedValue on ask), AskIgnoredError handling, access-check failure, and reader failure. - readFileSafety.integration.spec.ts covers approval and cancellation races, descriptor identity, and "approval technical failure" with abort during diagnostics. - readFileDocument.integration.spec.ts covers the notebook text-only path, including the "without numbering extracted notebook text twice" case. That case is the one the reviewer reports as A1, so the path is tested. - ReadFileCancellation.spec.ts, ReadFileTarget.spec.ts, readFileResultFormatter.spec.ts (including the unrecognized-status rejection), and readFileTextProcessor.spec.ts cover their own branches at the unit layer. - Deleted behavior has replacement coverage. The old readFileTool.spec.ts was removed, and the new suite replaces it. Residual gap: the reviewer's A2 reproduction (ordinary approval exception under textOnly classified as cancellation) did not appear as an explicit test in my search. I could not confirm whether a test pins that combination. The branch is options.textOnly && error instanceof AskIgnoredError, and the AskIgnoredError path is tested. This is a narrow combination gap, not a missing test layer for a changed behavior, so it does not meet the FAIL criteria. No Playwright/UI snapshot requirement applies. Tests were not run, per sandbox limits.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path in this PR was found that leaks secrets or PII, trusts or executes unvalidated input, or bypasses approval or allowlist controls. Evidence from the committed diff (refs/coderabbit/pre-merge-check/base..head): - Modern read ordering (src/core/tools/file-reading/ModernFileReader.ts): the flow runs rooignore check, then ReadFileTarget.resolve, then a second rooignore check on the resolved path, then access.requestApproval, and only then contentReader.read. Content is read only after approval. - Legacy read ordering (LegacyFileReader.ts): rooignore check, resolve, rooignore re-check on target.fullPath, then approveLegacyFile (which calls task.ask), and only then target.withHandle. A denied result returns before any read. - Target binding (ReadFileTarget.ts): the target uses realpath and lstat, rejects symlinks, and revalidates the real path. withHandle opens with O_NOFOLLOW and checks dev and ino against the approved identity before reading. - Allowlist change (src/core/auto-approval/index.ts, filePatterns.ts): the only change is an added canonical workspace root. Equivalent spellings are checked per rule in order, so exclusions apply to both spellings. The change adds equivalence only for the workspace root. It does not auto-approve any path outside a user's granted pattern. Early false when both allowlists are empty is more restrictive. - Windows drive handling: drive-relative paths now return undefined or false, which is fail-closed. - Error paths (ReadFileAccess.ts): the cancellation-classification change (textOnly && AskIgnoredError returns cancelled) returns without reading. It is fail-closed, so it is not a bypass. Reviewer-reported findings in the objectives were checked against the code where possible. The symlink approval bypass is reported as reproducing on the base as well as the head, so it is not PR-introduced. The other reported items (document duplicate numbering, cancellation classification, image contract, line-limit validation) are correctness or contract issues, not the stated security conditions. The PR description was truncated. That did not affect this verdict, because the code paths above were read directly. I did not execute tests.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

The check fails only for a changed persistence path that loses or corrupts state through an un-awaited operation, a non-atomic write, missing rollback or partial-failure handling, or an unpropagated persisted default. I searched the PR diff for those patterns and found none. - Awaited state operations: the modern and legacy read paths await task.fileContextTracker.trackFileContext (wrapped in cancellation.run) and task.say. The error reporter is awaited through cancellation.run(() => this.errorReporter.report(...)). The only non-awaited-looking hits are inside async helpers that return the awaited promise, so they are not dropped. - Writes: the fs.writeFile, fs.rename, fs.rm and xlsx.writeFile hits are all in __tests__ fixtures. The production code adds no new file write, rename, or settings/globalState update. - Defaults: DEFAULT_LINE_LIMIT, MAX_LINE_LENGTH and related constants are code constants, not persisted settings. No new persisted default is added that a consumer must read. The defects named in the PR objectives (text-only double formatting, approval-error classification, symlink approval bypass, line-limit validation, image MIME contract, and others) concern read correctness, approval, and cancellation. They are not persistence integrity failures, so they do not match this check's conditions. This verdict covers only the changed code in the reviewed range and does not assess those other defects.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No changed lifecycle path leaks a listener, watcher, provider, timer, task, or file handle, and none duplicates work after cancellation. Evidence from the head revision (refs/coderabbit/pre-merge-check/head): - Descriptor cleanup: ReadFileTarget.withHandle (src/core/tools/file-reading/ReadFileTarget.ts:54-68) opens the file with O_NOFOLLOW, runs the reader inside try, and calls file.close() in finally. Both ReadFileContentReader (line 47) and LegacyFileReader (line 70) reach descriptors only through withHandle. A repository-wide search found no other fs.open in the file-reading tree. - Cancellation gating: ReadFileCancellation.run (ReadFileCancellation.ts:18-32) checks cancellation before and after each operation, so no new open or read starts after abort. ReadFileCancellation only observes abort/abandoned and does not change lifecycle state. - Late results: ReadFileContentReader.read (line 86) and ModernFileReader.read (lines 50-56) return cancelled instead of late content. ReadFileDocumentReader checks cancellation after each await. - No listeners, timers, or watchers: a grep of the new file-reading, auto-approval, and image-helper code found no setTimeout, setInterval, addEventListener, .on(, .watch(, or write streams. The only .close() hits in the grep are in unchanged modules. - Singleton change: presentAssistantMessage now defaults to a module-level ReadFileTool instance. It holds no listeners or timers, so it adds no lifecycle resource. The PR description's reviewer findings (A1 duplicate numbering, A2 approval-error classification, and the symlink approval bypass) concern correctness and security, not resource lifecycle. They are outside this check's criterion.

Current step: Resolve the merge conflicts. The review sequence resumes after the branch is mergeable.

Review-state labels are managed by this workflow; do not edit them manually. community-approved is managed the same way — do not add or remove it manually. It signals a fresh community code approval for the current head as an advisory priority only; maintainer review is still required.

Final autonomous verification for head 8365676:

  • Every required GitHub check completed successfully on this head: compile, translations, knip, mocked extension-host E2E, and Ubuntu/Windows platform unit tests.
  • CodeRabbit submitted APPROVED for this exact head, with “No actionable comments were generated”; there are no unresolved review threads.
  • Repeated self-review fixed out-of-range reads being reported as empty and added formatter/structured-result regressions. Normal lint/type-check hooks stayed enabled and no suppression counts increased.
  • On the declared Node 22.23.1 runtime, the full monorepo test command passed 13/13 tasks (including 9,729 extension tests and 1,891 webview tests). The real VS Code 1.100.0 extension host also passed the seven existing read-file smoke scenarios.
  • The unchanged scope selector reports 408 extension executable lines. The mutation job is successful, but its preflight capacity warning is advisory and is not represented as completed testing of every mutant.

Remaining merge blocker: fresh human maintainer/CODEOWNER approval is required by the repository rules and the managed review gate. I cannot self-approve or grant that permission. No PR was merged and no deployment was performed.

Stack order: review/merge this foundation before dependent #1949. To expose the smaller dependent diff before merging, a maintainer may create upstream base branch refactor/1948-file-reading-foundation at this exact head and retarget #1949; the contributor account has only READ access upstream.

Verification for 242931b:

Addressed the last two partial legacy branches from the Codecov report without fabricating invalid mock output. The image helper always returns a processing-result object or rejects. Private legacy operations now return a definite string; the unused nullable image result and its top-level skip branch have been removed. All real access, approval, capability, validation, and size-limit guards remain unchanged.

Added a public tool-boundary legacy-batch test for an image-processing rejection followed by a successful text read. It verifies the exact ordered combined response, preserved error diagnostic and failed-turn flag, and context tracking only for the successful text file. The test and all existing legacy tests passed before and after the contract simplification.

Final local verification on Node 22.23.1: 280 focused tests; all 136 reader tests with Windows path semantics; full monorepo tests (13/13 tasks, 9,830 backend tests); full lint and type checks; scoped ESLint suppression pruning with no registry change; formatting and whitespace checks. File-reading coverage is now 100% statements, branches, functions, and lines.

Final remote verification for this exact head: all six required checks and every latest additional check passed, including CodeQL, Codecov, mutation testing, CodeRabbit status, and PR review gate. The linked Codecov report now confirms that all modified and coverable lines are covered by tests. CodeRabbit submitted an explicit APPROVED review for 242931b at 2026-10-08 06:31:34 UTC. No unresolved review threads remain. The PR remains open and awaits separate maintainer review; it has not been merged or closed.

readFileTool.execute to verify the exact validation and processing arguments and
the formatted image and text blocks passed to pushToolResult, rather than only
checking that the mocks were called. In the default-limit test for
mockedReadWithSlice, assert the exact input and DEFAULT_LINE_LIMIT value instead
of accepting any number; import the constant from the module used by

Recognize lexical and verified canonical workspace-root spellings without resolving individual file aliases. Preserve ordered grants, exclusions, literal root names, and lexical-parent rules across POSIX, Windows drives, and UNC shares.

Reject ambiguous Windows drive-relative inputs without widening read or write permissions. Centralize platform selection in WorkspaceRootStrategy.forPlatform and cover literal UNC share names with regression tests.
Keep the symlinked-workspace approval prerequisite unchanged. Pin approved targets to verified descriptors, consume descriptor-bound text/document/image bytes, close resources on all paths, and honor cancellation in both native and legacy readers while preserving received approval feedback.
Retain the exact approval and safety prerequisite commits from PR Zoo-Code-Org#1999. Reuse verified target/cancellation and image I/O helpers, preserve request policy snapshots and presenter ownership, and keep the residual constructor-composed reader strategies, block formatting, raw-document bounds and numeric validation. Port all safety regressions through the new boundary; add exact decoder, ignored-target display and late-diagnostic tests without new lint suppressions.

Current-head verification and remaining blockers

Verified head: b4e9d4bb3f15b4eaafce5c0242dcb89733aeed58 — checked live on 2026-10-14. Only PR #1950 was rewritten/pushed; its base remains upstream main.

Exact stack: main 58341d882e57e9dd7eb50c5187a52917541789eb → copied approval prerequisite 2f5f7d1cb916f182be66d12a7aa11ca33b649bd1 → final #1999 safety c10dece8d734d6ffcfaaaab0100758433dd5b12c → one residual foundation commit b4e9d4bb3f15b4eaafce5c0242dcb89733aeed58. Both prerequisite commits remain exact ancestors, not rewritten or reimplemented. The published old head was backed up and replaced using an exact force-with-lease; normal commit/push hooks passed.

Actual remote results on this head

  • All six required CI checks passed: compile, translations, knip, Ubuntu platform tests, Windows platform tests, and mocked E2E. QA workflow and platform results, E2E.
  • CodeQL, build, dependency/static checks and both Codecov patch checks passed.
  • The additional mutation check failed: 976 changed executable extension lines versus the unchanged 500-line capacity limit. This is the actual current-head log, not an old check. Locally, the residual-only diff against final fix(read-file): bind approved reads to verified targets #1999 is also 767 lines, so merging prerequisites alone will not solve the remaining capacity failure. A scope split or maintainer-reviewed narrow exclusion needs an explicit decision; no selector, capacity policy, workflow or gate was bypassed.
  • CodeRabbit and the review gate remain pending at the last live check. CodeRabbit initially skipped under the CI labels, then started an actual final-head review after the six required jobs passed. A skipped successful status is not approval. All three previously outstanding actionable threads are fixed, documented and resolved; no new unresolved thread was present at the last check. No final-head automated or human approval is fabricated.

Local verification

  • Uncached full monorepo confirmation: 13/13 tasks passed, 0 cached, including 11,143 backend tests (39 skipped) and 1,998 webview tests.
  • Full monorepo lint/types: 11/11 tasks each passed; complete lifecycle/model-check umbrella passed; 214 simulated Windows-path reader tests passed.
  • The earlier uncached parallel run passed all webview assertions but encountered a Vitest worker-shutdown RPC error. The uncached serial confirmation passed without code changes, skipped tests or disabled checks.
  • Focused regressions cover the final safety boundaries through the new adapters, exact PDF/DOCX bytes/decoder arguments, empty/absent workspaces, approval strategies, canonical blocked-target display privacy, raw document bounds, late cancellation/diagnostics, strategy composition and presenter continuation. No new suppression entry/count; 100 obsolete reader/test suppressions removed.

Conflict decisions and safeguards

Final #1999 target/cancellation/approval/image helpers were preserved byte-for-byte. The residual architecture consumes verified descriptors; mandatory-buffer document decoders were retained instead of restoring older pathname-based decoder logic. Modern and legacy cancellation/feedback were ported, the obsolete case-colliding cancellation filename was removed, and presenter injection retains request-policy snapshots and newer lock/pending-update behavior. Numeric-string coercion remains parser-owned, with validation at execution.

The root checkout is still #1999 at c10dece8d734d6ffcfaaaab0100758433dd5b12c; remote #1999 and #2041 (1f1e299368a80adb8093c88c8d47596c8af85775) are unchanged. All six protected user-file SHA256 hashes match the supplied snapshot. The dedicated foundation worktree is clean. No changeset, changelog, user setting or lifecycle transition was introduced.

Outcome: the requested stack and required passing CI are verified, but this PR is not all-green because mutation capacity still fails and final automated/human review is not complete.

- Around line 2919-2936: Update the “should use default limit when not
specified” test to assert the exact call to mockedReadWithSlice using
DEFAULT_LINE_LIMIT, rather than accepting any numbers; alternatively, remove it
if the earlier test already covers this behavior.

Review comments at @src/core/tools/file-reading/ReadFileAccess.ts:
- Line 46: Update the error-handling branch in the ReadFileAccess flow so
AskIgnoredError("superseded") propagates as an error when the task is still
active; return cancelled only for actual cancellation, such as an aborted or
abandoned task. Keep the text-only approval behavior for genuine cancellation
unchanged.

Remove the remaining weak default-limit test, or give it exact assertions.

The test at Line 2900 already asserts readWithSlice("content", 0, DEFAULT_LINE_LIMIT). The test at Line 2919 is named "should use default limit". It still uses expect.any(Number) for the limit. A regression to any other default limit passes this test. Delete it as a duplicate, or assert DEFAULT_LINE_LIMIT.

As per path instructions: "Reject weak assertions on values that could take multiple forms."

Proposed fix
- // Should use DEFAULT_LINE_LIMIT (which is typically 2000)
- expect(mockedReadWithSlice).toHaveBeenCalledWith(expect.any(String), expect.any(Number), expect.any(Number))
+ expect(mockedReadWithSlice).toHaveBeenCalledExactlyOnceWith("content", 0, DEFAULT_LINE_LIMIT)

around lines 2919 - 2936:
Update the “should use default limit when not specified” test to assert the
exact call to mockedReadWithSlice using DEFAULT_LINE_LIMIT, rather than
accepting any numbers; alternatively, remove it if the earlier test already
covers this behavior.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not classify a superseded text-only approval as task cancellation.

When another ask supersedes a pending approval, Task.ask("tool", ..., false) can throw AskIgnoredError("superseded") while abort and abandoned remain false. This branch returns cancelled, so the active read loses its error result. Propagate that error for the active task; reserve cancelled for actual cancellation. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @src/core/tools/file-reading/ReadFileAccess.ts at line 46:
Update the error-handling branch in the ReadFileAccess flow so
AskIgnoredError("superseded") propagates as an error when the task is still
active; return cancelled only for actual cancellation, such as an aborted or
abandoned task. Keep the text-only approval behavior for genuine cancellation
unchanged.
