Characterization tests, then upgrade to Node 24, NestJS 12, Prisma 7, Jest 30 - #417
Two commits, meant to be reviewed one at a time: first the tests pin down what the backend does today, then the upgrade runs against those same tests.
1. test: characterize current behavior before the dependency upgrade
Tests only, no source changes. They pass on the current stack: NestJS 11, Prisma 6, Jest 29.

Coverage of all files (statements / branches / functions)

99.5% / 97.7% / 99.7%
Honest coverage:test:cov now counts every source file, not only the ones some test imports. Thresholds keep it from slipping.
Wiring test:src/app.module.spec.ts builds the real AppModule, checks the DI graph, sends real HTTP requests and checks startup and shutdown of every provider.
Odd behavior is pinned, not fixed. Each case is marked // NOTE: current behavior —. Examples:
delete of a test run or build swallows non-P2025 errors and still emits the delete event.
/health answers 500 instead of 503 when the database is down.
The diff worker pool tries a job 3 times, not 2.
LDAP update() ignores the configured LDAP_ATTRIBUTE_*.
In multipart uploads, merge is true only for the exact string 'true'.
2. chore(deps): upgrade to Node 24, NestJS 12, Prisma 7, Jest 30, TypeScript 6
Node 20 has been out of support since April 2026. The tests from commit 1 pass unchanged, except for the matcher aliases Jest 30 removed and Prisma 7's error import.
Runtime behavior kept as it was:
Class fields:useDefineForClassFields stays off. With target ES2023 it would let subclass DTO field declarations overwrite values set by base constructors.
Connection settings: the pg pool behind Prisma 7 reads connection_limit, connect_timeout, pool_timeout and schema from DATABASE_URL, with Prisma 6's defaults.
prisma/.env: loaded by ConfigModule and prisma.config.ts, as Prisma 6 did on its own, so the README's local setup works as written. I checked it step by step.
Generated client: written to a pinned path, so the backend and the migration package each get their own whatever order they're installed in.
Migration package:prisma/tsconfig.json explicitly turns strict off, since TypeScript 6 would turn it on by default.
Deployment:
Shutdown hooks: enabled, and node runs as PID 1. On a rolling deploy, SIGTERM now drains requests and closes the diff workers and the connection pool.
Image size: the runtime image drops dev dependencies (1.33GB → 1.09GB), and a new .dockerignore keeps node_modules out of the build context.
Tooling:
Faster tests: unit and e2e tests transpile without type-checking. Unit ~110s → ~17s, e2e 142–260s → ~35–60s. CI type-checks once in a new npm run typecheck step.
Faster build:nest build compiles only src (20s → 2.7s) and writes dist/main.js both locally and in Docker. Locally it used to write dist/src/main.js.
Dependencies: removed unused ones (cache-manager, ajv, fs-extra, pg-hstore, swagger-ui-express, rimraf, ts-loader, two ESLint plugins). Declared lodash and body-parser, which the code uses directly.
Verification
Unit: 839/839 on the upgrade commit, 834/834 on the tests commit with the old stack.
Static checks and build: type-check, lint, formatting, build, and the migration package's tests (6/6).
Docker (docker compose up --build): migrations and seed OK, acceptance 2/2, e2e 63/63.
README local setup, run step by step: migrate deploy, db seed, test:e2e.
Not run: I couldn't build amd64 images locally (arm64 machine). The Docker images workflow builds both platforms on this PR.
Follow-ups (not in this PR)
CI:
actions/checkout and setup-node v4 → v7 (v4 runs on Node 20), ubuntu-24.04
replace sleep 30 with docker wait vrt_migration, and run acceptance only after it
npm cache, a separate fast job for lint and unit tests, test:oidc, concurrency
Dependabot entries for github-actions, docker and /prisma
Cleanup cron: runs on every replica. It needs an advisory lock or a single designated instance.
Stuck dependencies:
uuid-apikey is unmaintained and pulls in a vulnerable uuid
openid-client 6 is a full API rewrite
TypeScript 7 isn't supported by ts-jest or @nestjs/swagger yet
Mutation testing (Stryker) of the new tests is still running. Its findings will come in a separate PR.
This pull request updates the backend to Node.js 24 and Prisma 7, changes TypeScript and test configuration, and adds PostgreSQL adapter setup. It also adds shutdown handling and expands unit and end-to-end tests across application services, controllers, and shared utilities.
Updates Node.js requirements and container images to version 24, adjusts build and test configuration, and adds a CI typecheck step.
Prisma 7 configuration and PostgreSQL adapter prisma.config.ts, prisma/*
Adds Prisma configuration and schema-copy generation, configures PrismaClient with PrismaPg, and derives pool and schema options from the database URL.
Loads .env and prisma/.env, enables application shutdown hooks, changes shutdown hooks for Prisma and workers, and cancels pending event callbacks. Adds integration and lifecycle tests.
Adds characterization and end-to-end tests for build and project operations, test-run creation and approval, DTO validation, variation lookup and merge, and cleanup behavior.
Image comparison and worker behavior src/compare/*, test/comparators.e2e-spec.ts
Adds tests for comparator selection, worker-pool operation, signatures, image loading, and VLM provider responses.
Authentication, user, storage, and shared API tests src/auth/*, src/users/*, src/static/*, src/shared/*, src/http-exception.filter.*, test/static.e2e-spec.ts, test/users-admin.e2e-spec.ts
Adds characterization tests for authentication and account flows, storage backends, shared decorators and interceptors, HTTP exception handling, static-image endpoints, and user administration.
Upgrading to Prisma 7 can break database connectivity for deployments whose DATABASE_URL relies on Prisma 6 TLS defaults or on sslcert for a custom server CA. Resolve or explicitly document the TLS and sslcert handling before merging.

Pin down what the backend does today so the NestJS 12 / Prisma 7 / Jest 30
upgrade can be checked against it. Behavior that looks wrong is asserted as
it is and marked with a `NOTE: current behavior` comment rather than fixed.
- app.module.spec compiles the real AppModule, checks the DI graph, sends
real HTTP requests and checks startup/shutdown of every provider
- specs for every previously untested file (exception filter, JWT strategy,
guards, interceptors, events gateway, worker pool threads, Ollama
controllers, DTOs) and the uncovered branches of the services
- coverage now counts every source file, with thresholds
321 -> 834 tests; coverage of all files 83.6% -> 99.5% statements,
69.7% -> 97.7% branches, 67.2% -> 99.7% functions.

Node 20 left support in April 2026; the rest follows from it (the NestJS 12
CLI needs Node 24, Jest loads the now-ESM Nest packages via require(esm)).
The characterization tests from the previous commit pass unchanged, apart
from the matcher aliases Jest 30 removed and Prisma 7's error import.
Runtime behavior kept as it was:
- useDefineForClassFields stays off: with target ES2023 it would let
subclass field declarations overwrite values set by base constructors
- the pg pool behind Prisma 7 takes connection_limit, connect_timeout,
pool_timeout and schema from DATABASE_URL, with Prisma 6's defaults
- prisma/.env is loaded through ConfigModule and by prisma.config.ts, as
Prisma 6 used to on its own, so the README's local setup works unchanged
- prisma/tsconfig.json pins strict off and its global types: TypeScript 6
would otherwise compile the seed with strict defaults
- the client is generated to a pinned path, so the backend and the
migration package each get their own regardless of install order
Deployment:
- shutdown hooks enabled and node run as PID 1, so SIGTERM drains requests
and closes the diff workers and the pool on rolling deploys
- runtime image without dev dependencies (1.33GB -> 1.09GB), .dockerignore
keeps node_modules out of the build context
Tooling:
- README asks for Node 24.15+, the new engines minimum
- unit and e2e tests transpile without type-checking (unit 110s -> ~17s,
e2e 142-260s -> 33s); CI type-checks once with `npm run typecheck`
- build compiles only src (20s -> 2.7s) and emits dist/main.js both
locally and in Docker
- unused dependencies removed (cache-manager, ajv, fs-extra, pg-hstore,
swagger-ui-express, rimraf, ts-loader, two unused eslint plugins);
lodash and body-parser, used directly, are now declared

The debounced testRun_*/build_updated emits kept their timers after the app
closed. build_updated then queried the database through a pool that was
already shut down; with Prisma 7's pg driver that late connection crashed the
e2e suite after Jest tore its environment down. Cancel the batches in
onModuleDestroy. Nothing is lost compared to before: without shutdown hooks a
stopping process never sent them either.

Review comments at @src/prisma/prisma.service.ts:
- Line 30: Update the pool-size fallback in the Prisma service to use physical
CPU count or an explicitly bounded default so it stays within the documented
connection budget when connectionLimit is unset; update the related test and
documentation to match the selected fallback.
- Line 33: Update the documentation for connectionTimeoutMillis to state that pg
uses one timeout, so setting only pool_timeout=0 still yields the 5-second
connection timeout rather than an indefinite pool wait; describe this as a
compatibility trade-off, not full Prisma 6 timeout compatibility. Add a test
covering this mixed-zero case around the Math.max timeout calculation.
Review comments at @src/shared/events/events.gateway.ts:
- Around line 59-64: Add a destroyed-state guard to the gateway’s public event
methods and the build callback so no debounced work starts after teardown. Set
the flag at the start of onModuleDestroy before cancelling the debounced
functions, and attach a rejection handler to the build callback’s Promise.all
chain.

Review of the upgrade found the shutdown path and the pg driver defaults
diverging from what the PR promised.
Shutdown:
- in the container node ran as PID 1, where the kernel ignores the SIGTERM
Nest re-raises after its hooks, so every stop waited for SIGKILL; tini is
PID 1 now (stop takes ~1s instead of the full grace period) and also reaps
odiff's child processes
- PrismaService, DiffWorkerPool and EventsGateway tear down in
onApplicationShutdown: Nest 12 runs onModuleDestroy before the HTTP server
drains, so requests still in flight met a closed pool and worker pool
- build_updated logs a failed query instead of leaving an unhandled
rejection, which ends a Node 24 process
Connection URL, as Prisma 6 read it:
- sslmode=require/prefer encrypt without verifying the certificate unless
sslaccept=strict (pg alone treats them as verify-full)
- connect_timeout=0 / pool_timeout=0 mean no timeout again, and idle
connections live 300s instead of pg's 10s
- the seed client honours ?schema= and the TLS mode like the app does
- a startup warning lists Prisma 6 parameters that no longer apply
(pgbouncer, statement_cache_size, socket_timeout, sslcert, ...)
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The pg pool fell back to availableParallelism() * 2 + 1, a logical CPU count:
on hyper-threaded hosts that doubles each replica's default pool against what
the README documents (num_physical_cpus * 2 + 1) and what Prisma 6 opened.
Count distinct (physical id, core id) pairs in /proc/cpuinfo like Rust's
num_cpus::get_physical, falling back to the logical count where cpuinfo has
no such fields (ARM, macOS), as num_cpus does.

HttpExceptionFilter recognised a unique-constraint violation by Prisma 6's
wording, "Unique constraint failed on the fields". Prisma 7 says "on the
constraint: `<name>`", so a duplicate project name, user email or CI build id
became a 500 with Prisma's raw message instead of a 400 with the readable one.
The unit tests mocked the old wording and could not see it; the new e2e tests
against PostgreSQL did. Recognise the P2002 code first, keeping both wordings.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
e2e coverage of src was 59%: unit tests reached ~99% but mocked Prisma, the
image libraries and HTTP, which is how a Prisma 7 change to the duplicate-key
error went unnoticed. 173 new tests against PostgreSQL, the real comparators
and real HTTP bring it to 84.7% of statements (73.6% of branches):
- test runs: listing, details, approve/merge/reject/delete with the files on
disk, ignore areas and diff recalculation, comments, bulk-approve sibling
matching (signatures, skipped reasons, group-by axes)
- test variations: list, details, merge outcomes, delete; builds: paging
around a build, ciBuildId filter, stats, delete, approve-all, retention
- images: redirect and download, thumbnails, 404 and traversal
- comparators: looks-same, the native odiff binary and VLM (provider
unreachable / stubbed verdicts) with exact mismatch numbers and configs
- users: admin-only endpoints, role changes, deletion, and the OIDC login
flow against an in-process identity provider
- the nightly cleanup of stale feature-branch variations
As with the unit tests, behaviour that looks wrong is pinned as it is and
marked `NOTE: current behavior`, among them a password hash and API key in
GET /test-variations/details, an open redirect via /images/%2F..., and
PATCH /builds writing any column.

Review follow-up. Two gaps left after mapping sslmode=require:
- a URL without sslmode meant prefer to Prisma 6 (TLS when the server has
it, plaintext otherwise); pg connected in plaintext, so a server that
insists on TLS refused the upgraded API. One trial connection before the
first query now picks TLS or, if the server has none, plaintext.
- sslcert is the server's CA to Prisma but a client certificate to pg. It
is now the CA the certificate is checked against under sslaccept=strict,
resolved from prisma/ like Prisma did, and dropped otherwise.
Prisma's TLS parameters become pg's `ssl` option and leave the URL; a URL
using pg's own (sslrootcert, sslkey, uselibpqcompat, verify-*) is passed on
untouched. The seed connects the same way. Checked against PostgreSQL with
and without TLS: prefer, require, strict (self-signed refused), disable.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Both predate this PR; the new e2e tests pinned them as current behaviour,
which review rightly flagged as locking them in.
- GET /images/:fileName put any name after a '/', so /images/%2Fexample.com
redirected to //example.com, another host, from an unauthenticated route.
It now checks the name like the download route already did (400).
- GET /test-variations/details/:id embedded the approving user whole,
password hash and API key included, readable by any signed-in user,
guests too. The user now comes without them; the frontend only shows
name and email, and the Swagger type no longer promises an apiKey.
