Logic tests, drop uuid-apikey, build with SWC - #433
Three independent commits; each passes on its own.
1. test: checks results where logic decides outcomes
Mutation testing (Stryker) showed tests that executed this code without checking its result. This keeps only the ones guarding logic that decides an outcome; the rest of what that run suggested (log texts, configuration defaults) was dropped as noise.
Ignore areas and scaling: areas cleared exactly to their edges, nearest-neighbour scaling, pixel by pixel.
Comparator boundaries: a diff exactly at the tolerance passes, and size mismatches are handled, in pixelmatch and looks-same.
Bulk approve: stored change-signature validation.
User lookups:users.service passes the user's id to Prisma.
Roles: role metadata on the handler vs the class, and OIDC role mapping from claims.
To check they are worth it, I broke the code by hand three times. Each break passes master's tests and fails these:
an ignore area that clears one row too far;
a diff equal to the tolerance counted as failed;
a user delete without the id filter.
2. fix(deps): no vulnerable uuid left
uuid-apikey dropped: it is unmaintained and pulled in uuid <11.1.1 (GHSA-w5hq-g745-h8pq).
API keys and image names: they keep their exact format (28 Crockford base32 digits), so keys already issued keep working. They now come from 140 random bits instead of a v4 UUID's 122.
Project lookup: keeps the same id-or-name check.
ldapts 7 → 9: same API, and no uuid dependency.
Remaining audit findings:@nestjs/core and multer have no fixed NestJS 12 release yet.
3. build: SWC
Faster builds:nest build and start:dev rebuilds drop from ~2.5s to ~0.5s.
Unit tests run through SWC: they now exercise the same output that ships. e2e stays on ts-jest, which measured faster there.
Circular imports: SWC needs safe handling, so the 8 forwardRef parameters are typed via WrapperType<T>. A real cycle, vlm.service ↔ its providers, is broken by moving the schema into its own module.
Coverage: now measured by v8 on the TS source, with type-only files excluded.
Included review availability: This review used your included allowance. Your plan provides up to 1 included review per hour; 0 remain after this review.
Walkthrough
The pull request configures SWC for builds and tests, replaces uuid-apikey-based key generation and UUID checks, and updates comparison logic and its tests. It also adds a VLM result schema module, adjusts dependency type annotations, upgrades ldapts, and expands service tests.
Changes: SWC build and test tooling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Configure SWC build and test execution .swcrc, nest-cli.json, Dockerfile, package.json, src/jest.config.ts
Nest builds and Jest transforms use SWC. The Docker builder copies .swcrc and runs typecheck before building. Jest coverage uses V8 with updated exclusions. The ldapts dependency version changes to ^9.2.0.
Random keys and UUID-shaped identifiers
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Add random-key and UUID-shape utilities src/utils/random-key.ts, src/utils/random-key.spec.ts
The utility generates 28-character Crockford base32 keys and checks UUID-shaped strings. Tests cover key format, uniqueness, alphabet representation, and accepted UUID shapes.
Use local key generation and UUID-shape checks package.json, src/auth/auth.service.ts, src/auth/auth.service.spec.ts, src/projects/projects.service.ts, src/static/utils.ts, src/static/utils.spec.ts, test/preconditions.ts, test/users-admin.e2e-spec.ts
Authentication and image naming use the local key generator. Project lookup uses the UUID-shape check, and uuid-apikey is removed.
Update test identifiers and fixtures test/*e2e-spec.ts, test/preconditions.ts, test_acceptance/acceptance.spec.ts
End-to-end and acceptance tests use Node UUIDs or the local key generator in place of uuid-apikey.
Comparison behavior and tests
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Check dimensions before pixel-buffer equality src/compare/libs/pixelmatch/pixelmatch.core.ts, src/compare/libs/pixelmatch/pixelmatch.core.boundaries.spec.ts
Pixelmatch checks screenshot dimensions before the pixel-buffer equality shortcut. Tests cover dimension mismatches, tolerance boundaries, and saved diff artifacts.
Cover comparison and image utility boundaries src/compare/libs/looks-same/looks-same.service.boundaries.spec.ts, src/compare/libs/pixelmatch/*boundaries.spec.ts, src/compare/libs/pixelmatch/signature.core.spec.ts, src/compare/utils/index.spec.ts
Tests cover image dimensions, diff tolerance and saved artifacts, change-signature dimensions, image scaling, and ignore areas.
Define and wire the VLM result schema src/compare/libs/vlm/vlm-result.schema.ts, src/compare/libs/vlm/vlm.service.ts, src/compare/libs/vlm/providers/*, src/compare/libs/vlm/vlm.service.spec.ts
The VLM result schema is defined in its own module and imported by the service and providers. A service test covers a model-reported difference after pixelmatch failure.
Cover comparison workers and stored signatures src/compare/compare.service.spec.ts, src/compare/diff-worker-pool.workers.spec.ts, src/test-runs/test-runs.service.spec.ts
Tests cover worker crashes, Odiff configuration mocking, stored-signature reuse and recomputation, and cache behavior.
WrapperType dependency annotations
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Apply WrapperType to service dependencies src/shared/wrapper-type.ts, src/builds/builds.controller.ts, src/builds/builds.service.ts, src/projects/projects.service.ts, src/shared/tasks/tasks.service.ts, src/test-runs/test-runs.service.ts, src/test-variations/test-variations.service.ts
The generic WrapperType alias is added and used on injected service dependencies and the controller’s project-service property.
Authorization behavior tests
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Test role metadata precedence src/auth/guards/role.guard.spec.ts
Tests cover controller-level role metadata and handler-level role overrides.
User and event service tests
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Test user and event service behavior src/users/oidc/oidcusers.service.spec.ts, src/users/users.service.spec.ts, src/shared/events/events.gateway.spec.ts
Tests cover OIDC role claims and callback errors, user query arguments, and removal of a deleted test run from a queued update batch.

Mutation testing showed tests that ran this code without checking what it
produced. Kept only the ones guarding logic that decides a result:
- ignore areas cleared exactly to their edges, and nearest-neighbour
scaling, pixel by pixel (compare/utils)
- the diff tolerance boundary (equal to the tolerance passes) and size
mismatches, in the pixelmatch core and service and in looks-same
- stored change-signature validation for bulk approve, and signature shape
- users.service hitting Prisma with the user's id (not every user)
- role metadata on handler vs class, OIDC role mapping from claims (admin
values, separators, non-string claims, nested claims, default role, a
missing claim keeping the role)
- VLM verdict over pixelmatch status, event queue upkeep on delete, a
crashed worker's finished job not re-run
Checked by hand: each of "ignore area one row too far", "diff equal to the
tolerance fails", "delete without the id filter" passes master's tests and
fails these.

uuid-apikey is unmaintained and pulled in uuid <11.1.1 (GHSA-w5hq-g745-h8pq,
no fixed release); ldapts 7 pulled in the same. The app only used
uuid-apikey to make random keys and to tell a project id from a name:
- API keys and image names come from generateRandomKey(): the same format
as before (28 Crockford base32 digits, upper case, no dashes), so keys
already issued keep working, from 140 random bits (a v4 UUID had 122)
- project lookups keep the same id-or-name check (isUuidShaped); an empty
reference is a name now instead of throwing
- tests use crypto.randomUUID()
ldapts 9 keeps the Client/bind/search/unbind API the LDAP login uses and
has no uuid dependency. npm audit --omit=dev no longer lists uuid or
ldapts; the remaining @nestjs/core and multer advisories have no fixed
NestJS 12 release yet.

nest build (and start:dev on every change) goes from ~2.5s to ~0.5s
(115 files in ~50ms). Unit tests run through @swc/jest as well, so they
exercise the same output that ships, app.module.spec's DI wiring included;
e2e stays on ts-jest, which measured faster there (1:02 vs 1:31). The
type check stays a separate step (`npm run typecheck`).
What SWC needed:
- WrapperType<T> on the eight forwardRef-injected constructor parameters:
with circular imports the class is not initialised when the decorator
metadata is emitted; tsc's output read it as undefined, SWC's live
bindings throw. forwardRef still hands Nest the class.
- VlmComparisonResultSchema in its own module: the providers imported it
from vlm.service, which imports the providers — a cycle that only worked
when vlm.service happened to load first.
- compare.service.spec mocks static/utils instead of spying on it (SWC's
exports are getters jest.spyOn cannot replace).
- coverage by v8 on the TypeScript source (istanbul on SWC output counts
decorator helpers as branches), type-only files excluded from it.
Checked: 1043 unit and all 247 e2e tests pass under SWC.

false, isSameDimension: false } when allowDiffDimensions is disabled, even when
pixel buffers are identical. Keep the byte-equality shortcut for matching
dimensions and for cases where dimension differences are allowed.

The byte-equality shortcut ran before the size check: a 60x30 and a 30x60
screenshot of the same pixels decode to the very same buffer and came out
equal, both when different dimensions were refused and when they were
allowed and should have been compared on the larger canvas. The shortcut
now applies to same-size screenshots only, after the dimension guard.

SWC compiles without checking types, which tsc's build used to do; the
images published from tags (docker.yml) do not go through the CI typecheck
job. The builder stage runs `npm run typecheck` before building (~3s).
