feat(artwork): podcast covers and radio station images - #342
The play bar showed a radio station or a podcast episode with a generic symbol, and the podcasts page showed no cover. The covers exist — a feed names one, a station may have a logo — but the web client cannot load them: RFC-019's CSP keeps img-src to this origin, and loading them from their host would hand that host every listener's address. So the server now fetches the image once and serves it from the artwork store, like any cover.
Podcast covers. When a channel is subscribed or refreshed (only while WAVEFLOW_PODCASTS is on), the cover the feed names is fetched into the artwork store and recorded on the channel (podcast_channel.artwork_hash, with the address it came from and when). Native API: artwork_hash on channels and episodes. Subsonic: coverArt on channels and episodes in getPodcasts, getNewestPodcasts, getPodcastEpisode and episode bookmarks, served by getCoverArt.
Radio images. A station has an optional image_url, validated like homepage_url, accepted by the native POST and PUT routes. The server fetches it once when it is set or changed and stores radio_station.artwork_hash. A failed fetch keeps the address and shows no image.
One fetcher.portrait::fetch_followed reaches the host through the podcast fetcher's rules (podcast::open: public addresses only, checked and pinned, redirects followed by hand with every hop checked, at most five) and reads the answer through the portrait fetcher's checks, now shared by both: 10 MiB via outbound::read_bounded_body, and the bytes sniffed as JPEG, PNG or WebP.
Client. The bar shows the station's image or the episode's channel cover through the existing Artwork component, which gains a placeholder so the radio and podcast symbols stay when there is no image. The Media Session gets the same cover. The radio page shows each station's image and has the new "Station image" field (English and French); the podcasts page shows each channel's cover and the open channel's.
Sweep.sweep_artwork_store counts channel and station hashes as references, and deleting the channel or the station releases them.
Docs. RFC-025 amendment (A1–A7), docs/privacy.md (which hosts, when, what is sent, how to turn it off), docs/operations.md (the new switch), docs/subsonic-compatibility.md, docs/api-v2-guide.md.
Podcast decisions are recorded as an amendment to RFC-025. There is no radio RFC: the radio decisions are in the same amendment (A5, A5b) and summarised here.
Fetch after acceptance, never before (security review fix). Every check that can refuse a write runs, and the row is committed, before any image is fetched: the address rules, the per-account station ceiling, the station belonging to the account (404 otherwise), and, for a channel, the instance ceiling and the duplicate check. That ceiling is now also checked before the feed is fetched. The image is then fetched, written to the store, and attached by a second write that names the row (for a station, its account and the address it was fetched for too). An image that arrives after its row was deleted or changed attaches to nothing, and the sweep collects it. An account at its ceiling, or replacing a station it does not own, makes the server contact nobody and write nothing.
1b. A new channel's cover is fetched in the background (review fix). A subscription used to fetch the feed and then the cover inside the request, each with its own deadline. Together they could run past the native route's timeout after the channel was committed, and Subsonic's createPodcastChannel, which no TimeoutLayer covers, had no bound on the total at all. I chose to move the cover out of the request rather than thread the request's deadline down to the service: the subscription now answers once the channel is committed, with its cover pending, and a background task fetches and attaches it under its own deadline. That also fits Decision 1. DomainServices::podcast_covers_settled lets the tests wait for those tasks.
1c. A late cover is dropped (review fix). One channel can have two cover fetches in flight: the subscription's, in the background, and a refresh's. The write that records a cover therefore re-checks, under the writer gate, what its fetch assumed: the channel still exists, it still names the address the cover came from (or none, to forget one), and artwork_fetched_at is still the value read before the fetch began (IS ?, so that NULL matches NULL). If any check fails, nothing is written and the newer state stands. The artwork row recorded for the dropped cover then references nothing, and the sweep collects it with its file. The refresh's own write goes through the same guarded statement.
Station image budget. Station images are the one fetch any signed-in account can trigger. An unchanged address is never fetched again, and each account may have at most 10 station images fetched per hour (in memory, so a restart refills it). Past that, the station is saved without an image and a later save retries. That caps the worst case at 100 MiB an hour per account. Podcast covers need no budget: only administrators subscribe, and refreshes are bounded by the channel count and the TTL below.
When a podcast cover is fetched again: when the feed names another address, when no cover is held (the last fetch failed), when the file is missing from the store, or when the copy is older than 7 days. Otherwise a refresh reads the feed but not the cover. A failed fetch stores nothing, keeps whatever was held, and the next refresh retries.
Episodes show their channel's cover. An episode's own itunes:image is not fetched. With up to 500 episodes per feed, it would make cover traffic scale with episodes rather than channels.
Cover addresses are hidden like feed addresses.image_url natively, and originalImageUrl in Subsonic, now go only to podcast managers, because a private feed's cover can carry the subscriber's token. Everyone else gets the hash. This is a wire change for originalImageUrl and is recorded in docs/subsonic-compatibility.md.
A station image is retried on the next save that carries the address. There is no background pass, so a station image is never fetched unless an account asks for it.
A native PUT without image_url keeps the image; null or blank clears it. This is the one field a replacement does not clear by omission, so a client written before the field existed cannot remove an image just by renaming the station.
Subsonic radio is untouched.createInternetRadioStation and updateInternetRadioStation have no image parameter: create stores no image, and update leaves the image as it is. internetRadioStation carries no coverArt, because the frozen contract defines none. There is no native PATCH route for stations; create and replace are the native writes.
One switch: WAVEFLOW_REMOTE_ARTWORK, on by default. It is on by default because nothing here happens on its own: covers only while podcasts (off by default) are on, and station images only when an account sets one. When it is off, addresses are still stored, nothing is fetched, and images already stored stay shown. docs/privacy.md now says that a station image is the one request a server at its defaults can be asked to make.
Lenient on unlabelled images. A podcast cover or station image served as application/octet-stream, binary/octet-stream or with no type is read and judged by its bytes, because object storage labels covers that way. Any other non-image type (text/html) is refused unread. The provider portrait fetcher keeps its strict rule.
Plain http. Allowed for a podcast cover exactly when WAVEFLOW_PODCAST_ALLOW_HTTP allows it for feeds. Always allowed for a station image, as it is for the station's stream. The address rules apply either way.
cargo test --all-features (full suite, on a fresh webapp/dist)
webapp: bun install, bun run build, bun run lint (10 warnings, as on main; no new diagnostics), bun run test (vitest)
full Playwright suite on a fresh build, WAVEFLOW_E2E_PORT=4814
both themes checked on screenshots (bar, radio list, podcasts page)
New Rust tests, all in tests/podcasts.rs against its loopback host (never the internet):
a_feeds_cover_is_fetched_once_and_served_by_its_hash: the cover is fetched and served natively and by getCoverArt; coverArt is on channels and episodes; originalImageUrl goes to the manager only; an unchanged URL is not fetched again; a moved one is fetched once through a redirect and the old cover is released.
a_cover_that_is_not_a_safe_image_stores_nothing: images over the ceiling (declared, and streamed with no length), HTML labelled as an image and as HTML, and redirects to a private and a mapped-private address are each refused, and the fetcher is asked for the precise reason; an unlabelled JPEG is accepted; a failed fetch is retried on the next refresh.
a_station_image_is_fetched_when_set_and_served_to_its_account_only: the image is set through the API and served, gets 404 for another account, is not re-fetched for an unchanged URL, is kept by a native write without the field and by a Subsonic update, is retried on the next save, and is cleared by null. Replacing a foreign station answers 404 and makes no request.
a_write_refused_for_its_ceiling_fetches_no_image: an account at its station cap and an instance at its channel cap are refused with no request to the image's or the feed's host, no artwork row, and nothing on disk.
a_first_cover_that_lands_after_a_refresh_moved_the_feed_is_dropped: the subscription's cover is held at the host while a refresh runs, in three cases. If the feed moved to another cover, the channel keeps the new one. If the feed moved to a cover that cannot be fetched, the channel ends with none. If the address is unchanged and the refresh re-recorded it, the newer bytes are kept. The dropped row is released by the sweep.
a_slow_cover_host_does_not_hold_a_subsonic_subscription: a Subsonic createPodcastChannel whose cover host never answers still answers within five seconds, with the channel created and its cover pending. The fixture's cover deadline is ten seconds.
The private-feed test's cover now carries the subscriber's token, so it also proves the cover address reaches no reader.
Unit tests: cover_plan (when a cover is due) and the hourly budget.
Playwright: the bar shows the station's image (and the symbol without one) in both themes, plus the Media Session artwork; the bar shows the episode's channel cover; the station form accepts, validates and clears an image URL, and the browser never contacts the image's host. The e2e mocks now carry artwork_hash and image_url.
Inversions
For each one: back up the file (under a scratch name carrying the branch), apply the change, run the one test, check that it fails for the stated reason, restore, and confirm git diff is clean. For the client inversions, webapp/dist was rebuilt after each change, and the run would have stopped on a failed build.

Not proved separately by inversion: the ordering inside podcast subscription, where the cover is now fetched after the channel row commits. Its only refusal after the feed fetch is the in-gate cap and duplicate check, and I11 covers the cheaper pre-check that now runs before anything is fetched.
Security review fix
An automated review found that the station image was fetched and written to the store before the station cap and ownership checks. An account at its cap, or replacing a station it does not own, could make the server download up to 10 MiB from any public host and write it to disk, and then get refused. That is fixed (Decision 1): every refusing check now runs and the row is committed before any fetch, and the image is attached by a second, guarded write. Station image fetches are also limited to 10 per account per hour (Decision 2). Podcast subscription had the same ordering, now fixed the same way, and it also checks the channel cap before fetching the feed. Tests: a_write_refused_for_its_ceiling_fetches_no_image, the foreign-station PUT in a_station_image_is_fetched_when_set_and_served_to_its_account_only, and the unchanged-URL assertions. All are proved by inversion (I8, I10, I11, I12).
Notes
docs/privacy.md no longer says that a server at its defaults sends nothing at all. It now says "nothing on its own": an account setting a station image is the one request a default server can be asked to make. Set WAVEFLOW_REMOTE_ARTWORK=off to rule it out.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 128d2
No actionable issue remains that should delay merging after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 128d2
The new image-fetching paths retain public-address validation, download limits, authenticated serving, and account ownership checks. No material security-boundary regression was demonstrated in the inspected paths. Deployment-wide resource limits and downgrade behavior remain only partly established.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The new independently controllable input is an authenticated account's station image URL. Feed operators can also choose cover destinations for manager-subscribed podcasts. These inputs cause server-originated HTTP(S) GET requests and writes to the shared artwork store, rather than browser requests to image hosts. Podcast management remains restricted to enabled, non-disabled administrators.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Before each connection, the opener checks scheme and credentials, rejects destinations with any disallowed resolved address, and pins an admitted address. Redirects repeat these checks and are bounded. The shared HTTP builder disables automatic redirects and environment proxies. Image reads enforce a byte ceiling, supported signatures, and an overall deadline.
observed — Both native artwork serving and Subsonic cover retrieval resolve the requested identifier through artwork authorization before reading bytes. The inspected serving paths return stored image bytes directly rather than introducing server-side image decoding. Native artwork responses retain private cache policies.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Station image attempts are limited to ten per account per hour, including unsuccessful attempts. The quota is shared through in-process state, not persisted across restarts. Fetch refusal preserves station metadata without an image, and network activity does not hold the database writer gate.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — If multiple server processes are supported, consider a deployment-wide station-fetch quota or an aggregate concurrency limit. The current per-process budget should not be presented as a deployment-wide bound without establishing that topology.

Replacing a foreign station answers 404 and makes no request.a_write_refused_for_its_ceiling_fetches_no_image: an account at its station cap and an instance at its channel cap are refused with no request to the image's or the feed's host, no artwork row, and nothing on disk.covers_named_by_a_channel_or_a_station_survive_the_sweep_until_deleteda_first_cover_that_lands_after_a_refresh_moved_the_feed_is_dropped: the subscription's cover is held at the host while a refresh runs, in three cases. If the feed moved to another cover, the channel keeps the new one. If the feed moved to a cover that cannot be fetched, the channel ends with none. If the address is unchanged and the refresh re-recorded it, the newer bytes are kept. The dropped row is released by the sweep.a_slow_cover_host_does_not_hold_a_subsonic_subscription: a SubsoniccreatePodcastChannelwhose cover host never answers still answers within five seconds, with the channel created and its cover pending.
Tests:
a_write_refused_for_its_ceiling_fetches_no_image, the foreign-stationPUTina_station_image_is_fetched_when_set_and_served_to_its_account_only, and the unchanged-URL assertions. All are proved by inversion (I8, I10, I11, I12).Notes
docs/privacy.mdno longer says that a server at its defaults sends nothing at all. It now says "nothing on its own": an account setting a station image is the one request a default server can be asked to make. SetWAVEFLOW_REMOTE_ARTWORK=offto rule it out.main(feat(webapp): link each credited artist from song lists and the track menu #341) withgit merge --signoff, without conflicts.Summary by CodeRabbit
