feat: libraries and scanning — exclusions, links, missing tracks, lifecycle and watching (RFC-021) - #328
RFC-021 and its whole implementation, in one PR: what a scan leaves out, symbolic links, missing tracks, the library lifecycle, and a filesystem watcher. It answers the five gaps of the 2026-10-24 comparative audit. RFC-018's guarantees hold throughout: the skip pre-check, the Walked/unclaimed relocation safety, and nothing marked missing when the walk was incomplete.
Scope
What lands
Exclusions
Built-in exclusions: dot names except .waveflow-managed at the root, @eaDir, #recycle, #snapshot, $RECYCLE.BIN, System Volume Information, lost+found. A per-folder .waveflowignore with gitignore syntax, read through the ignore crate's matcher beside the existing walkdir walk. An empty file excludes its folder, except at the root. An unusable file makes its folder unreadable in RFC-018's sense; at the root it fails the scan.
Excluded = not discovered
An excluded track becomes unavailable like a deleted one and can be a relocation source. It comes back under the same id when the rule goes. New scan_job.excluded counter.
Symbolic links
Per-library follow_links, off by default, set by an administrator. Off: every link is counted in scan_job.skipped_links and logged (first 20 one by one, then a count). On: a link is followed only when its canonical target stays inside the root. Outside, broken and looping links are skipped and counted. A followed file is indexed under its canonical path, so one file is one track and the stored path never holds a link (secure_track_path is unchanged).
Missing tracks
track.unavailable_since. GET /api/v2/libraries/{id}/unavailable-tracks lists each track with what a purge costs (playlist entries, favourites, plays). POST …/unavailable-tracks/purge takes {"track_ids": […]} or {"all": true}, never neither. It runs under the writer gate in one transaction, removes only what is still unavailable, runs the scan's consolidation (no empty album or artist left), removes orphaned favourites, ratings, search rows and genres, and releases canvases left with no link. It answers 409 while the library scans. Optional retention, WAVEFLOW_UNAVAILABLE_RETENTION_DAYS, off by default, runs hourly. Web page "Missing files" and CLI library unavailable / library purge.
Lifecycle
PATCH /api/v2/libraries/{id} (name: owner or admin; path / follow_links: admin on an admin credential, queues a scan with the new trigger library_moved). DELETE /api/v2/libraries/{id} (admin, body {"confirm": "<current name>"}). GET …/settings (admin). All refuse with 409 during a scan. CLI `library rename
Watcher
notify 8 (default features only), with the server's own per-library debounce: quiet for WAVEFLOW_WATCH_DELAY_SECS (10 s), or 30 delays at most. WAVEFLOW_WATCH (default on). No scan starts while one runs for that library; the library stays pending instead. Reads, atime changes and .waveflow-managed are ignored. An overflow marks everything pending. The watched set follows the libraries. A watch that cannot be established is logged once and the library falls back to the periodic scan. The network-mount caveat is in docs/operations.md.
Decisions worth a reviewer's look
Links are confined to the root, and indexed canonically. That is the brief's rule. A beets link: yes farm whose files live outside the root is therefore not followed. The RFC and docs/operations.md give the in-tree recipe (store folder excluded by .waveflowignore, links into it) and list an allowlist of extra roots as still open.
Built-in exclusions cannot be overridden by ! in an ignore file.
The scan_job table is rebuilt to admit the triggers watch and library_moved, since SQLite cannot alter a CHECK. The rebuild follows the participants precedent (migrations run with foreign keys off, then foreign_key_check). tests/migrations.rs now seeds a scan job, its error and a track's last_seen_scan_id at every released schema and reads them back.
Deletion order is explicit: tracks, album participants, albums, artists, genres, then the library. A track restricts its album, and an album its album artist.
Administrative standing comes from the credential, not the account. This was raised in review before the PR opened. standing_on first took "admin" from the account row alone, so an admin-owned token whose scopes stop short of admin (for example write) could rename or purge any library. Services now take a LibraryActor { id, admin_credential }, which the handlers build with the same two checks authenticated(…, Access::Admin) makes. The CLI acts as the operator. Test: a_narrowed_admin_token_has_no_say_over_a_foreign_library.
bun --cwd=webapp install, bun --cwd=webapp run build, biome check . (no new diagnostics), vitest run
New tests:
unit (src/scanner.rs, src/watcher.rs): built-in exclusions, ignore-file rules, debounce, never a scan during a scan, event filtering;
tests/scanner.rs: exclusions and ignore files, excluded → unavailable → back, unusable ignore file, links, purge, purge rules and retention, moved root keeps identities, role model, deletion leaves no row, watcher end to end;
tests/native_api.rs: the HTTP routes by standing, and the narrowed admin token;
tests/cli.rs: rename, set-path, purge and delete from the CLI;
tests/migrations.rs: scan history survives the scan_job rebuild.
Verified by inversion
Each fix was reverted, the test was seen failing for its own reason, and the fix was restored with git diff clean. Every inversion was re-run in a private CARGO_TARGET_DIR, after a shared one turned out to let cargo reuse another worktree's artifacts.

The web client was also checked by hand against a throwaway server on port 4599. A file deleted on disk was picked up by the watcher with no manual scan and listed on "Missing files", then purged with two clicks. The library was renamed, then deleted with its typed name, from the admin panel.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to e6adc
Filesystem settings and destructive operations have explicit permission checks. However, command-line lifecycle actions use process-local scan coordination. Concurrent use with a running server could undermine the scan-versus-purge safeguard and irreversibly remove saved state belonging to every member of the affected library.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: The new CLI lifecycle commands initialize their own ScanManager, whose library mutex is not shared with the running server. In documented CLI/server coexistence, the CLI purge guard therefore does not exclude a server scan that may be about to restore or relocate an unavailable track. Purging at that point can irreversibly remove the track's dependent user state; changing the root can likewise invalidate an active scan's filesystem snapshot. Administrator-only CLI access and transactional deletion limit authority and partial database writes, but do not establish exclusion across the full cross-process transition.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — An administrator can select an existing server-readable directory as a library root. Purge authority reaches unavailable tracks and their dependent state for every member of the selected library, but target selection and deletion retain library_id constraints.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The retained concern is an integrity and failure-containment path requiring an authorized local operator: CLI purge can overlap a server scan because their library locks belong to different managers. This can defeat the intended protection for tracks about to return through relocation. It is not evidence of a remotely reachable authorization bypass.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Administrative standing requires both an active administrator account and an administrative credential. Owners may rename libraries but cannot change roots or link policy; administrators, owners and managers may curate unavailable tracks. Purge rechecks standing inside its transaction and filters named track IDs by the requested library.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Purge commits catalog cleanup and audit state before releasing canvas blobs. Blob release checks whether references remain under a blob lock, and unsuccessful cleanup leaves unreferenced bytes for the existing sweep rather than undoing the committed catalog operation.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make lifecycle exclusion authoritative across processes: route online CLI mutations through the running server, or use a database-backed scan lease and fencing generation shared by scanners and destructive operations. Root changes and purges should reject or fence scans holding an earlier generation.

Re the outside-diff comment in review 5640993965 (src/services/library_lifecycle.rs:548-580, "make the update and the enqueue atomic"): confirmed against the code, and fixed in 79bd494.
The scan that a new root or follow_links value owes is now inserted by Database::insert_scan_job_in, inside the same transaction and under the same writer gate as the UPDATE library. If the job cannot be queued, the change rolls back with it. The job is only spawned after the commit, so a committed move always has its scan.
Test: a_move_whose_scan_cannot_be_queued_is_not_stored (tests/scanner.rs). An SQLite trigger refuses scan_job inserts with the trigger library_moved. The move must then fail and leave root_path unchanged. Inversion: committing the update before queuing the job (the previous shape) stores the new root, and the test fails with "the new root was stored without the scan it owes".

Summary
RFC-021 and its whole implementation, in one PR: what a scan leaves out, symbolic links, missing tracks, the library lifecycle, and a filesystem watcher. It answers the five gaps of the 2026-10-24 comparative audit. RFC-018's guarantees hold throughout: the skip pre-check, the
Walked/unclaimedrelocation safety, and nothing marked missing when the walk was incomplete..waveflow-managedat the root,@eaDir,#recycle,#snapshot,$RECYCLE.BIN,System Volume Information,lost+found. A per-folder.waveflowignorewith gitignore syntax, read through theignorecrate's matcher beside the existingwalkdirwalk. An empty file excludes its folder, except at the root. An unusable file makes its folder unreadable in RFC-018's sense; at the root it fails the scan.scan_job.excludedcounter.follow_links, off by default, set by an administrator. Off: every link is counted inscan_job.skipped_linksand logged (first 20 one by one, then a count). On: a link is followed only when its canonical target stays inside the root. Outside, broken and looping links are skipped and counted. A followed file is indexed under its canonical path, so one file is one track and the stored path never holds a link (secure_track_pathis unchanged).track.unavailable_since.GET /api/v2/libraries/{id}/unavailable-trackslists each track with what a purge costs (playlist entries, favourites, plays).POST …/unavailable-tracks/purgetakes{"track_ids": […]}or{"all": true}, never neither. It runs under the writer gate in one transaction, removes only what is still unavailable, runs the scan's consolidation (no empty album or artist left), removes orphaned favourites, ratings, search rows and genres, and releases canvases left with no link. It answers 409 while the library scans. Optional retention,WAVEFLOW_UNAVAILABLE_RETENTION_DAYS, off by default, runs hourly. Web page "Missing files" and CLIlibrary unavailable/library purge.PATCH /api/v2/libraries/{id}(name: owner or admin;path/follow_links: admin on an admin credential, queues a scan with the new triggerlibrary_moved).DELETE /api/v2/libraries/{id}(admin, body{"confirm": "<current name>"}).GET …/settings(admin). All refuse with 409 during a scan. CLI `library renamenotify8 (default features only), with the server's own per-library debounce: quiet forWAVEFLOW_WATCH_DELAY_SECS(10 s), or 30 delays at most.WAVEFLOW_WATCH(default on). No scan starts while one runs for that library; the library stays pending instead. Reads, atime changes and.waveflow-managedare ignored. An overflow marks everything pending. The watched set follows the libraries. A watch that cannot be established is logged once and the library falls back to the periodic scan. The network-mount caveat is indocs/operations.md.Decisions worth a reviewer's look

The RFC anddocs/operations.mdgive the in-tree recipe (store folder excluded by.waveflowignore, links into it) and list an allowlist of extra roots as still open.!in an ignore file.scan_jobtable is rebuilt to admit the triggerswatchandlibrary_moved, since SQLite cannot alter aCHECK. The rebuild follows the participants precedent (migrations run with foreign keys off, thenforeign_key_check).tests/migrations.rsnow seeds a scan job, its error and a track'slast_seen_scan_idat every released schema and reads them back.standing_onfirst took "admin" from the account row alone, so an admin-owned token whose scopes stop short ofadmin(for examplewrite) could rename or purge any library. Services now take aLibraryActor { id, admin_credential }, which the handlers build with the same two checksauthenticated(…, Access::Admin)makes. The CLI acts as the operator.
